“First in Freedom"

Harpers Ferry would like to thank The Harpers Ferry/Bolivar Veterans for thinking about us this holiday season. Their orchestrated efforts delivered to us over 600 holidays cards from children around the West Virginia area during Christmas and again at Valentines Day. We say thank you to them and the following elementary schools: The Blue Ridge Elementary School, thank you. The Harpers Ferry Middle School, thank you. C.W. Shiply Elementary School, thank you. Smart’s Mill Middle School, thank you. We continue our fight with you in our thoughts.

77 | Basics of a replenishment at sea

2. The ship comes alongside us and we connect to receive mail and fuel and supplies.

1. First thing, a ship from MSC meets us in the ocean full of goodies.

Line across for supplies. Human chain to move boxes.Packages moved.Line across for fuel.

Ever wonder why mail takes so long to get a ship out to sea? The answer is because before it gets to us it has to be sorted and sent all over the world. When it finally reaches an area near where we are, a ship from Military Sealift Command

(MSC) has to find us in the big open sea and conduct what we call a replenishment at sea.

3. We then spend hours sorting all our mail and supplies to the appropriate locations.

4. And then it’s MAIL CALL ON HARPERS FERRY time.

Sometimes a helicopter flies back and forth delivering packages through the air.

Our ship store gets stocked. We receive any parts that we need to repair the ship. We can send our mail away to the MSC ship to send off for us. Lots of moving parts. At the end, everyone is tired but proud. We anxiously wait to find out if we have mail.
