I served onboard from January 1987 to May of 1991 and it is by far the best ship I've served on. I was only an FC3 but made second while I was there and it was the most eye opening experience I've had and I'm glad I went through it there. I've also made some lifelong friends while there that still keep in touch. I left the ship before it got out of the yards in Portland and wish I could have been there when she decommissioned but I was in Mare Island, CA. teaching. Now

Would like to here from some old buddies from Gun Plot like Frank Quistgaard, Mike Lundquist and even "Big John" Johnson (our First Class). I remember some good times like the Med cruise of '77 when we went up into the Black Sea with a Fast Frigate for two weeks and worried the russians to death. Before we left we pulled along side the FF and

It was a real serious honor to serve aboard the "Willie Hot Dog". She was/is a good ship with a history of casting a bold presence where American interests were to be represented. The vessel had an excellent balance in terms of the way the ship would roll and heel in the heavy seas. An easy ride in the worst of sea states. With the "Outboard" system on her, the places visited and areas "observed" were of true value to

It would be good to hear from any former shipmate and I'd be very interested in helping see to it that she goes into a noble retirement of a display status somewhere. If the USS Turner Joy can be preserved, the USS Standley can be every bit as valuable.

I came aboard as she came out of drydock and took her to Rosie Roads for a gun and missle shoot before returning to the Fleet. She was a fine vessel, with an excellent crew. Everyone was companionable and the work load was well shared by all. All together a very fine experience.

During that time we visited the Med on a tour with the Sixth Fleet, and also did a Westpac cruise for Piraz duty off the coast of Vietnam. When I was discharged from the Navy in 71, I moved to Florida and now live in Orlando. The years I spent on the Standley are full of memories of good times, good friends, and good duty. It was an honor to be part of the Standley's crew.

76-'81 OS3/2 OI Division I reported aboard shortly before her 10th birthday and what a party we gave her. I spent over 5 years on the "Hot Dog" and got to know her well, from the sonar dome to the SPS-10 platform. The only other ship that I served on that could even compare to her was the Sterett CG-31, Best homeport, Subic Bay, PI. It is sad that the Standley and her sister ships were decommisioned 10 years early. There are no ships in the US fleet today that as capable as

I served on board the Willie Hotdog from August 1986 through September 1988. I was the Damage Control Assistant working for LCDR's Corsi and Frick. I was the infamous OOD who single handedly tried to ruin the entire commercial fishing trade off Dubai during Persian Gulf Ops. Reported on board the USS William H. Standley (DLG32) 30 years ago today at 1400. She was in dry dock Charleston, SC. On board from DEC69-SEP71 YN3, Navigation. I'll never forget the Standley or the people I met during that time. I was the 1JV bridge phone talker for Sea Detail and the feeling I got when I past the word over the line "single up all lines" it was time to get underway, those were great times. James Hopkins and Woods Huff are the only shipmates I have had contact with until I found this website

I spent some of the worst and best times of my life onboard the Willy H.. Some of the things that I remember is getting woke up at about 2:30am for flight quarters, and being told that we were going to attempt to land a CH-53 jolly green giant on the flight deck. I was a blue suit at the time and we all knew what would happen if we tried to land that chopper, CRASH!. Well thankfully the chopper made it to the Nimitz and the next day we were informed that chopper was returning from a botched rescue attempt in Iran. That was 1980 and we recieved the Navy

and we recieved the Navy Expeditionary Medal. Then there was the time that we had a flareback in one of the boilers(I hope that I said that right). When it happened I was on the LeeHelm and we went right to GQ, some of us thought we had been hit by a missle the way it shook the ship. We spent 4 days in Diego Garcia next to a Destroyer Tender the name of which I don't recall. I went to 2 WesPac's and spent 3-1\2yrs.

I am a plank owner of the Willie H who reported to the pre-com detail at NOB Norfolk as a ETNSN in Mar.,1966. We met the ship in Boston for the commissioning on July 9,1966. Upon decom. I have entered the Aegis CG world. But I must say that WHS had many advantages. I still think it was a mistake to get rid of Terrier CG's They should have taken the NTU and just put it on a new hull. They say the reason Terrier went away was due to the high cost. I have been in the Aegis world for over 7 years now and we spend much more on the Aegis system then we ever did for Terrier. The WHS was my

Our granddad was a super person who loved the Navy and his country very much. He had an enormous curiosity and a sense of wonder, and was full of fascinating stories. He was Ambassador to the Soviet Union when he was 72 years old, traveling to Moscow during WWII across Africa to Afghanistan and in by the back door. I have a copy of

Hello my fellow ex-shipmates, i served onboard the Willie-H from 3/83 to 3/86 i started out in 1st Div, and striked out into Personnel i was pnsa Purnell and left the Standley as Pn3 Purnell and was stationed in Long Beach, Ca, i left Long Beach in 89, and then got orders to the Uss Enterprise which changed homports to Norfolk,VA. Was, and still is to this day a friend and shipmate of Bill Rodebush FTN/GM(?)He was a crewmwn on the 5" gun aft and was injured when he was thrown out of the mount when it made a full sweep with one of the doors open. Cost him an extra year of active duty for surgery and rehab. The Ex-USS William H. Standley DLG-32/CG-32 hulk was towed from Pearl Harbor to Australia in June 2005. She was to be sunk 100 nautical miles off the coast at the conclusion of Joint Excercise "Talisman Sabe 2005" There are photos from a helo firing 50 cal rounds into what is identified as the Stand\ey. Hi,you guys! Was glad to see alot of old friends names again. I boarded the Standley in 1969 after she returned from wespac and remained aboard until Jan. of 1973. I started out in 1st. div. BMSA and later transfered to S2 div.in the laundry. I later transfered to the barber shop as the ships barber SHB3. I hope that any of my hair cuts didn't cause anyone to go bald. I joined the ship in Naples in Jan 68 and departed in GITMO in June 70. I was Missile Ordnance Officer, Missile Fire Control Officer and finally Missile Officer (I am an ex-FTM1). During my 30 months, the ship was in our homeport of Mayport, FL, only 4 months. We were definitely steamers. I have many fond memories of serving with a wonderful group of sailors. I made a few mistakes as a JO, but learned from them (I hope). I retired in 1983; final job was CIWS Program Manager in DC.

I remember her as getting distinction in history as the "Lone Watch stander" off the coast of Mogadishu, Semalia. That was her last cruise and and enjoyable one. We had run out of food on that cruise and had no clue what would be served as the MS's dreamed up items. I know I gave up my stash to the Chiefs mess so we could servive. Not knowing where your next meal would come from was some trying times and we still provided hot water and a shower to the Marines on the beach. I will never forget that cruise or our Commander at

Oceangraphy at Monterey. Next I was Navigator and First LT on USS FLINT (AE 32). Last active duty tour was ASW instructor in San Diego, ending in 1977. Took a job in VA Beach, VA and worked as a defense contractor in the ASW and Tomahawk cruise missile areas for the next 30 years. Retired as CDR from Naval reserve in 1993. Retired completely in June 2007 and moved to Hendersonville, TN to be near daughter and grandson.

RM2 1979-1980 as a split sea tour from CV-64. Was onboard during Operation Eagle Claw, U.S. attempt to rescue American hostages in Tehran. PIRAZ/AAWC in North Arabian Sea kept Radio Central busy. Remember pulling alongside USS Dixie in Diego Garcia for temporary repairs to our boiler that blew and caused fire bricks to shoot out of the stacks, then made for NAVSHIPREPFAC Subic Bay for additional repairs. While in Norfolk, they sent me up to Bath as a member of the Nucleus Crew. I am also a plank owner. I was an RM3 when I came aboard at the Bath Iron Works and left as an RM2 in March, 1968. I left the ship at Suda Bay and had an interesting experience on my way back to the States via a MATS flight from Suda Bay to Rota, Spain and a flight the next day on an Air Force Cargo flight to Norfolk and on to the SAC base in Omaha. I'll never forget the first time we went out from Bath with the shipyard workers on board, or the trip from Bath to Boston, or the first time out from Boston with the full crew. A lot of the crew out on the decks, at the guns, seasick, puking all over the place. Looked like a scene from a war movie where a ship might have been hit with a chemical weapon of some type.

I arrived on the Standley, in Palma - July 1977 - departed in San Diego 1979. Survived the shipyard in Bremerton - what a blast the Northwest was. Worked with a lot of folks i.e., GMM's, FT's, BT's the list goes on. Memories that will last a lifetime.

Doing research on Agent Orange. Trying to determine if we operated within 10 miles of Vietnam between 1967 and 1971. I had prostate removed due to prostate cancer in 2007. Been turned down for disability from VA because of insufficient data. Wonder if Standley distilled their own water from the Tonkin Gulf. If so, might have an argument for pursuing with VA further.

Re-enlisted Nov 68 for the Standley. Made two Viet Nam cruises and left the ship in Subic for shore duty.Best ship I served aboard in my 22 years of duty, with 16 at sea. Still remember mooring alongside the battle ship in Subic, PIRAZ station, and cold Korea.

Being on that boat really gave me the experience I will never forget.I made alot of new friends and went to alot of countries I would of never seen before anywhere else.one of these days I will reconnect with old shipmates.? Im a truck driver
