HP OfficeJet Pro 9000 and 8000 All-in-One Series

Objective

Keypoint Intelligence - Buyers Lab was contracted by HP to conduct a study to determine if the OfficeJet Pro 9000 and 8000 all-in-one (AiO) printers could be considered to meet the following criteria1:

1. HP Officejet Pro 9000 and 8000 AiO series with HP Smart Tasks: first in-class mobile solution that automates scanning tasks1

2. HP OfficeJet Pro 9000 and 8000 AiO series has the best in-class security features2

The Buyers Lab research and analyst team investigated the majority of comparable non-HP color desktop inkjet all-in-ones with a price <$299 USD, based on IDC market share data. Buyers Lab analysts found that, as of the publication date of this report, no other in-class models meet the specified workflow automation and security criteria defined herein, and thus the OfficeJet Pro 9000 and 8000 AiO series can be considered the world’s first in-class printers to include a mobile solution to automate workflow and also the most secure in-class printers.

Keypoint Intelligence - Buyers Lab 2018 research study commissioned by HP based on research survey of printer manufacturers’ published specifications, documentation and press releases as of 12/15/2018 and not confirmed by lab testing. Market share as reported by IDC CYQ3 2018 Hardcopy Peripherals Tracker, CYQ3 2018 Release. The ability to automate work defined as having the capability to use the OEM mobile print app to create a multistep workflow on mobile device and have a shortcut appear on the app and/or on control panel of printer; and/or use intelligent Optical Character Recognition to name a scanned file based on the first few words of a document. Summary of Findings

HP Smart Tasks: first mobile print app that automates scanning tasks1

Buyers Lab analysts reviewed specifications and documentation for the leading in-class AiOs to assess whether they could be said to have the ability to automate work (specifically defined as the ability to create custom workflow shortcuts via the OEM mobile print app that would save a shortcut key in both the app and on the printer control panel, as well as the ability for the device to use OCR to intelligently name scanned documents based on the first few words of a document).

In reviewing the features and functionality of the top in-class models, Buyers Lab analysts found that while some offer scanning to cloud services, shortcut creation, and OCR, none come close to HP’s solution in their standard offering (without optional software applets). For example, though the Xerox Mobile Link app lets users build custom workflows, Xerox doesn’t have competing AiO hardware in this class. Brother Web Connect and mobile print apps from competing vendors let users scan to cloud services (like Drive, Evernote, and Dropbox); however, HP also integrates with QuickBooks for enhanced productivity. In addition, at the time of publication, the ability to create and save shortcuts from the mobile app to the printer control panel appears to be unique to the HP OfficeJet Pro 9000 AiO series. Some competing models from Brother, Canon, and Epson allow scan shortcut creation at the panel, but not through the mobile app.

As seen above, the HP Smart App lets users create and save workflow shortcuts, as well as sync those shortcuts with the printer control panel to help automate repetitive tasks.

The OfficeJet Pro 9000 and 8000 AiO Printer Series Offers Best In-Class Security Features2

The Buyers Lab analyst team reviewed manufacturer specifications to determine the available security capabilities of the leading in-class AiO models and compare them to those of the OfficeJet Pro 9000 and 8000 AiO series models. Based on this review of available features, Buyers Lab analysts feel the HP models offer more key security features than the comparable models currently available in the market today.

What is Business-Grade Multipoint Security?

Businesses, organizations, and the government all understand the importance of security and the privacy of information as it relates to security, and are putting measures in place to control as well as prevent security and data breaches alike. Over the past decade, manufacturers of office document technology have also hardened and improved their hardware, software solutions, and services to mitigate device and document security gaps as they relate to their products and the information that surrounds them.

Unfortunately, organizations often overlook or do not implement security on printer and MFP devices, often citing the perceived minimal risk or lack of resources to implement security on these devices. Nevertheless, according to best practices, all devices that are tied to the network (including print and MFP devices) are prone to the same security attacks as PCs and servers.

More than a simple inconvenience, a security breach can result in financial loss and a damaged reputation. Hackers are more sophisticated than ever before, using spyware, malware, and phishing attacks to find the endpoint that allows them to gain access to your data and information. To address these threats, many HP printers include a wide variety of built-in security features, including SureStart BIOS to check code integrity at power on, along with firmware whitelisting, run-time intrusion detection (constant monitoring of firmware and memory), and automatic reboot and code restoration when a problem is detected. The OfficeJet Pro 9000 series includes these valuable features, along with WPA Enterprise Wi-Fi encryption (most competitors include WEP or WPA Personal encryption) and secure Wi-Fi Direct.

What is Automatic Firmware Recovery/Self-Healing BIOS?

• The device periodically checks the firmware code to look for any modifications and notifies users of a potential attack should a code modification be found. The device then automatically recovers by installing a secure copy of the original code after a modification has been detected.

What is Firmware Integrity/Secure Boot?

• The device checks the application code at boot time to look for changes. If any issues are detected, the device will automatically recover from the problem.

What is Run-Time Code Integrity?

• While the device is running, it prevents modifications to application code. If the device detects attempted modifications, it notifies user that a potential attack is in progress.

What is Automatic Firmware Update?

• The device supports and will automatically download and install firmware updates as needed; automatic firmware updates are enabled by default.

Supporting Data Tables

Buyers Lab’s team reviewed a combination of product data sheets, users guides, and corporate information found on manufacturer websites to compare the OfficeJet Pro 9000 and 8000 AiO series to in-class inkjets on the criteria of the ability to automate work, and meeting specific security criteria.

While every effort was made to include the most accurate and complete information, some markets/regions lack complete coverage due to the limited amount of publicly available data.

ABOUT KEYPOINT INTELLIGENCE - BUYERS LAB

Since 1961, Keypoint Intelligence - Buyers Lab (BLI) has been the leading global independent office equipment test lab and business consumer advocate. In addition to publishing the industry’s most comprehensive and accurate test reports on office document imaging devices, each representing months of exhaustive hands on testing in BLI’s U.S. and UK laboratories, the company has been the leading source for extensive runnability testing on imaging media and consumables, as well as extensive specifications/pricing databases on MFPs, printers, scanners and fax machines. BLI also has a long standing reputation for being the industry’s most trustworthy and complete source for quality testing services and global competitive intelligence.

In addition to testing over 200 office document imaging devices and related consumables annually for its subscribers, BLI provides consulting services to buyers and a range of private testing services that include document imaging device beta and pre launch testing, performance certification testing, consumables testing (including toner, ink, fusers and photoconductors), solutions evaluations, and imaging media runnability testing.

For more information on BLI, call (973) 797-2100, visit www.keypointintelligence.com, or email [email protected].
