newquay fish festival 6-8th september 2013Lobster, mackerel and cockles...oh my!
It’s one of Cornwall’s best-loved local festivals, with a multitude of mouth-watering tasters, cooking demos, events and activities all in celebration of the town’s fishing heritage, its hardy fisherman and local culture. While the Fish Festival provides a diverse selection of entertainment for visitors and locals alike, it also illustrates an important part of Newquay’s heritage and trade, showcasing Newquay Harbour’s key importance in supplying seafood. Fifteen boats currently sail out of Newquay year-round, providing jobs and a stable economy for over 30 fishermen, some of whom are the fourth generation of Newquay fishing families.
From 6th-8th September, the town’s picturesque harbour will be transformed brimming with fishy delights including a large selection of craft and food stalls, sand castle building competitions
and music. Plus there are opportunities to taste delicious, fresh produce straight from the sea, as well as a whole host of cookery demonstrations from some of the best chefs in the region, showcasing all of the fabulous fish and seafood produced from one of the most important ports in the south west.
Praised for staying true to its roots, the Fish Festival continues to develop year on year, and the growth up to the 11th year is evident in just how popular the event has become. Each year it attracts over 12,000 visitors – a figure that continues to grow

A great shopping experience by the seaJust yards from the fantastic beaches of Newquay is the town centre which runs along side the Harbour, Towan Beach, and as far as Great Western Beach. With a fun mix of independent retailers nestled alongside high street names offering a very diverse range of goods, Newquay has lots to offer.
During the summer months the streets come alive with performers, buskers and events adding vibrancy and delight to your shopping trip, this is the reason Newquay is so well loved.
As the surf capital of the UK, Newquay has the very best selection of surf and street wear boutiques, but as you meander your way through the town centre you will find plenty of shops selling everything from coastal home wear products to Cornish fudge. There are some wonderful independent art galleries, specialist sports shops, quaint jewellery shops and places to buy gifts and lots, lots more….
When you are done with the shopping, you are only a moment’s walk from the ocean where you can sit and enjoy the sunny views of the Harbour and out as far as Watergate Bay, all whilst enjoying a coffee or some lunch from one of the cafes listed in this guide.
