Baiko’s History

Baiko Gakuin was opened in 1872 by missionary Professor Henry Stout and his wife in Nagasaki as a private school for Bible and English studies and is educational institution with over 140 years of history.In 1914, Umegasaki Jogakko and Kojo Jogakuin merged giving birth to the Shimonoseki BaikojogakuinEver since Baiko Gakuin opened in Shimonoseki in 1914, it has been run with the goal of education and academic research rooted in the Kanmon region.Baiko Gakuin, a mission school founded on Christian beliefs, honoring the motto “Ut filii lucis ambulate,” develops

human assets, “who can use their strong and supple minds and skills for others to develop a new world.”

Shimonoseki is located 1.5 hours from Fukuoka International Airport by bus. Its population is about 260,000. Shimonoseki is the most westernmost on Honshu, Japan’s main island, and has regular ferry connections to Pusan, Korea. The fishing industry is thriving in Shimonoseki, as Shimonoseki is the largest landing port for anglerfish and blowfish. Shimonoseki is known as the world’s blowfish capital. In addition, Shimonoseki has also been the site of many important events in Japanese history.

Message from Chancellor and President Higuchi

Everyone, welcome to Baiko Gakuin University!The University, a Christian school, honors the motto “Ut filii lucis ambulate, walk as children of light,” a passage from the Bible.We nurture and develop “individuals who will use their strong, supple minds and skills for others to develop a new world.”For that purpose, we focus on the following three points.First, to develop “communication skills.”This skill is necessary in both industry and society for young people to develop.Second, to develop “skills that lead young people to discover society’s issues and challenges on their own and to find solutions to these issues and challenges.”By acquiring these skills, we can build a better society.Third, to develop “minds that regard the happiness of others as their own happiness.”When we do something for someone else and make that other person smile, we feel a deep sense of happiness.A person who experiences such a feeling will be a person who can live for others.Such a person can help build a caring and warm society.At Baiko Gakuin University, students will encounter various experiences to acquire such skills and perspective.Through learning and encounters with many people during their four year university life, students will make new discoveries.Each student will discover and develop his or her immense potential.Now I would like to introduce what we do at Baiko Gakuin University.

Baiko’s Education

Baiko Gakuin University nurtures people who can contribute to the local society with a wide vision and through various studies based on the spirit of Christianity, lets them acquire the basic skills necessary for a member of society and draws them closer to people.Additionally, at the university efforts are being made for local training, such as natural entry learning and fieldwork, and also a wide range of opportunities for activities domestically and overseas have been prepared such as for studying abroad, internship, and volunteer activities.The faculty structure is composed of 2 faculties and 2 departments "School of Literature, The Department of Human-ities " and " School of Child Development Studies, The Department of Childhood Education ".The Department of Humanities consists of 5 majors, the Department of Childhood Education is composed of 2 majors, and a curriculum for each individual student can be selected to match the various objective qualifications, careers, and vocations.

In the School of Literature, The Department of Humanities, literature, culture, and language is learned through various training and experiences studying abroad. There are 5 majors, "Japanese Literature and Literary Arts Creation Major", "Area Study Major", "English Communication Major", "International Business Communication Major", and "East Asian Languages and Culture Major" where the languages and cultures of Korea and China are learned.In addition, an area of study titled "Baiko Commons", helps students to acquire the wide range of education and knowledge desired as the foundation for members of society.Also, the specialized curriculum is a place for additional learning.Through these 2 stages of learning, we are striving to produce "Glocal" people that will become a bridge between the global and local regions.Lessons that are characteristic of the "Writing Course" is where direct guidance from a professional writer can be received and also "Kanmon Fieldwork", and where research is done on the Kanmon region as an objective theme to uncover its hidden charms..."Foreign Language Guide Training" where the Korean, Chinese, and English languages learned are put into practical use.Practical learning is possible, such as in International Business Training where the business practices of airlines can be learned at affiliated overseas universities.Other than this, there are many specilized classes such as plays where the langage that has been studied daily is used to heighten the power of expression in a "Drama Production".

At Baiko Gakuin University, through a fulfilling 3 stage overseas study program, a high level of language proficiency and international understand-ing can be acquired leading you to become globally active.For example, we offer an overseas internship where you can experience working at Disney World in America while taking courses at Valencia College.

You can also use your summer vacation for overseas language study at Cebu Island in the Philippines. Many students aggres-sively participate in overseas internships.By having direct contact with different cultures, students’ ability to communicate is expanded.

In addition, many overseas students are studying at this school, mainly from Asia. Various support activities are undertaken such as through interaction with overseas students by the "Overseas Students Support Group".There are lessons where at the same time while learning the Japanese language and understanding Japanese culture, students introduce the culture and customs of their native country in Japanese to Japanese people. We also offer lessons to introduce the Kanmon region's history and culture to foreign tourists.

In the School of Child Development Studies, Department of Childhood Education, we strive to nurture teachers for elementary schools, kindergartens, and nursery schools with "A sense of mission and responsibility to work for the future of children".There are 2 majors, "Child Education Major" and "Child Care Major" .For each major, further specialized learning is possible to match students’ future goals.Additionally, in classes by actually interacting directly with children at locations with fieldwork, you can acquire practical leadership and communications skills.

Facilities Introduction

Baiko Gakuin University is an elegant campus lined with European style architecture, starting with the stained glass that emits dignified lighting in the "Sturgis Hall" chapel, unique to Christian schools.In the main building, in addition to the classrooms where lessons take place every day, there are parlors where foreign languages can be spoken on a daily basis, the "EEC (English Educational Center)", the "East Asia Education Center", At the student support center, student life is supported from study related issues to management of mental health, and support and consultation is provided at a single support window.

There is a Library that boasts many collections, a full-scale Museum, and a Christian Education Center that is central for everyday prayers and volunteer activities.

At Baiko Gakuin University, you can have a fulfilling campus life with encounters and interactions together with people who will become your lifelong friends.There is the "Lucis Festival" where students, teachers, and the local people create an "at home" style university festival, a religious play (pageant) and hand bell performance, hymns, and other important events of this school such as "Christ-mas Worship" and various other events are held throughout the year.
