President & CEO Message

Utah Food Bank was founded in 1904 as the Salt Lake Charity Association, whose objectives were, in part, “to discourage the growth of pauperism” and “to promote the general welfare of the needy.” Over 110 years of operation under various names and in various forms, Utah Food Bank has remained committed to providing assistance to Utah’s most vulnerable people. Our mission is simple: Fighting Hunger Statewide. To accomplish the tremendous challenge of ensuring that every Utahn facing the pain and anxiety of hunger has somewhere to turn, we depend heavily on the engagement and generosity of thousands of dedicated people in communities throughout Utah.

As Utah’s robust economy receives national and local media attention, from the vantage point of our direct service programs and partner agencies, it’s clear that hundreds of thousands of Utahns have been left out of the economic recovery. Hundreds of thousands of Utahns live paycheck to paycheck, just one emergency away from not having the money for food and other necessities.

In 2013, Utah Food Bank responded to this continuing need by providing more food to struggling Utah families than ever before. We traveled 419,066 miles and worked with 130 partner agencies to distribute the equivalent of more than 28.4 million meals throughout all 29 Utah counties. We have also worked to better fight the life-long impacts of childhood hunger by expanding our BackPack Program by 60% and serving 21,000 more Kids Cafe meals than we did in 2012.*

As Utahns, we are all familiar with the phrase “This is the Place,” and it is true that Utah is the place of incredible landscapes and a rich history. But this is also the place where hunger exists. “This is the Place”...where 1 in 5 of our children might go to bed hungry tonight, and where 472,000 of our neighbors—an astonishing 17% of our population—face hunger. For all of you who partner with Utah Food Bank to help our neighbors when they are most in need, thank you.

*In 2012, Utah Food Bank distributed 43,033 weekend backpacks and 181,579 Kids Cafe meals.

At present, the state of Utah has two economic stories. One story tells of the state’s position as one of the nation’s strongest and most diverse economies, with the enviable unemployment rate of 3.6%. But the other story tells of the thousands of Utahns who have been out of the workforce so long that they are no longer part of the unemployment statistics. It reminds us that in Utah, a minimum wage worker must work 82 hours per week, 52 weeks per year, to afford fair-market rent on a two-bedroom apartment.* After six difficult years of economic downturn, the need to believe in full economic recovery is a strong one. But for the thousands of people who depend on Utah Food Bank’s programs and the services of its partner agencies, survival is as challenging as ever. It is in this dichotomous environment of tremendous need and prosperity in which Utah Food Bank currently works to Fight Hunger Statewide.

Utah Food Bank’s Southern Distribution Center has played a critical role in allowing us to better assess and meet the needs of a geographically vast area with emergency food resources that are too few and far between. In San Juan County, 21% of the population lives with food insecurity, and 29% of their children don’t get enough food to meet nutritional needs. These figures are well above the national average, and it is difficult to grasp the economic devastation rampant in some communities. Some of Utah’s highest rates of food insecurity are centered around our Southern Distribution Center, and having such a critical link in close proximity has allowed us to not only be more responsive to their specific

needs, but also to have the ability to distribute critically needed foods in a more efficient and cost-effective manner.

Last year, we were able to distribute more than 4.7 million pounds of food via 20 local pantries and partner organizations to Utah’s seven southernmost counties, a feat we could not have accomplished without our Southern Distribution Center. We were also able to implement a Grocery Rescue program in Southern Utah that has collected more than 1.6 million pounds of food from 21 grocery stores since opening our Southern Distribution Center. This vital food source consists of fresh and non-perishable food approaching its expiration date, but still safe and healthy to eat — food that would otherwise go into local landfills.

In 2013, while Utah Food Bank focused on assessing each one of our programs in-depth to determine client needs and ensure that the availability of products matched those needs as best as possible, we also underwent some internal changes. Jim Yorgason, our former Chief Operating Officer, took the helm as President & CEO and has been critical in re-examining internal processes in order to increase accuracy and efficiency. Jim joined Utah Food Bank as Chief Operating Officer in 2010, following a successful 32-year career in television broadcasting at KSL-TV, Utah’s NBC affiliate. Jim completed his TV career as Vice President General Manager. Prior to holding that position, he was Vice President General Manager at Video West Productions. During his years at KSL, he served in local and national sales, broadcast operations and production, and was a member of the editorial board.

With an increased focus on ensuring that the widely varying needs of each corner of our state are met, as well as improving efficiency and accuracy, Utah Food Bank is blessed to be part of a community where giving back is part of our culture. Without the support of our incredible network of donors, volunteers, and advocates, we could not Fight Hunger Statewide. ■

Food Collection

Local Commercial Donations (38%)

Grocery Rescue (31%)

Government Commodities (19%)

Alliances with local grocery retailers provide a donation outlet for food that is nearing its expiration date, but is still safe and healthy to eat. Donations primarily consist of nutritious, perishable food items including fresh produce, dairy and meats that would otherwise be thrown away, thus providing much needed food while reducing food waste. Refrigerated trucks operate six days a week throughout the entire state, collecting these food items from local retailers. The food is then taken directly to partner agencies and is often in the hands of clients within 24 hours or less of pickup. Last year, this program’s partnerships with 218 grocery retailers across the state provided 12.2 million pounds of food for Utahns facing hunger, in addition to diverting wholesome products away from landfills.

In the past year, Utah Food Bank expanded efforts to procure more fresh fruits and vegetables to increase the nutritional benefit of food for clients. To achieve this, Utah Food Bank actively solicited food donations from each segment of the local food industry supply chain including growers, processors, packagers, and retailers.

The Emergency Food Assistance Program (TEFAP) and the Commodity Supplemental Food Program (CSFP) are federal food assistance programs that provide supplementary food at no cost to Americans living within the federal government’s poverty guidelines. The CSFP program, which is not offered in all states, provides commodity food packages for pregnant and breast-feeding women, new mothers up to one year postpartum, infants, children up to their sixth birthday, and seniors at least 60 years old who meet income eligibility requirements.

Page 9: Utah Food Bank: Annual Report 2012-2013

Statewide food drives assist Utah Food Bank in providing an adequate inventory for local pantries from within their own communities. In addition, the variety of food items received offers a broader range of options than that provided by commercial donations and purchased foods. Scouting for Food, Stamp out Hunger, the Summer Business Food & Fund Drive, Hunger Action Month Food Drive, and Holiday Food & Fund Drive are the five statewide food drives that provide year-round opportunity for community participation, made easy by the planning, implementation, and logistics provided by Utah Food Bank. In addition, Utah Food Bank provides logistical support and supplies to community organizations, groups, and businesses to increase opportunities for the community to engage in the fight against hunger.

Statewide Community Food Drives (7%)

National Commercial Donations (4%)

Purchased Food (1%)

Utah Food Bank’s relationship with Feeding America provides opportunities for food donations from outside the state, often at little or no cost. Feeding America is a network of more than 200 food banks that serve nearly every county in the United States. These important donations fill nutritional gaps and provide a broader variety of produce by mzximizing national donation opportunities including manufactured foods and goods, and fresh produce not grown in the area.

Utah Food Bank’s emergency food distribution needs are largely met through generous contributions from individual donors, manufacturers, and local producers and growers. The growing need for special food items to fill nutritional gaps requires the occasional purchase of some food directly from producers and manufacturers.

Food Distribution

Partner Agencies

Mobile Food Pantries

In 2013, Utah Food Bank’s statewide network of 130 partner agencies reached Utahns facing hunger in all 29 counties. Because many of Utah Food Bank’s partners could not survive if they had to pay for the food they receive, Utah Food Bank is one of a handful of food banks in the country that distributes food free-of-charge. This network of partner agencies consists of 92 emergency food pantries, 14 residential and rehabilitation facilities, 13 youth programs, 4 shelters, and 7 soup kitchens. Most food pantry partners have adopted a “Client Choice” model, which allows clients to make their selections the same way they would when shopping in a grocery store, rather than receiving a pre-packaged assortment of food. This model not only decreases product waste, but also promotes dignity and empowerment by allowing clients to choose the foods that best meet their needs.

Mobile Pantries provide additional support to individuals facing hunger with culturally-suitable staples, including as much fresh food as available, in communities that are underserved by traditional brick-and-mortar pantries. Areas may be underserved because there is no local pantry, the local pantry is too small to store enough food to support the number of people in need, or the pantry lacks enough refrigeration to provide adequate fresh foods. Mobile pantries also bring fresh food to areas where clients lack sufficient transportation to access the nearest food pantry. Last year, Mobile Pantries served 233,277 individuals throughout the state.

Food Distribution Sites

Page 12: Utah Food Bank: Annual Report 2012-2013

Through this program, Utah Food Bank provides hot, healthy evening meals to Utah children at high risk of hunger. Meals are prepared on site at Utah Food Bank by Kids Cafe kitchen staff, then immediately packed and transported to after-school sites where at least 50% of the children qualify for reduced price or free lunches. Participating children receive Kids Cafe meals weeknights, serving as their last meal of the evening. Utah Food Bank provides up to 1,700 hot meals each weekday for distribution at 30 Kids Cafe sites including Boys & Girls Clubs, community centers, and elementary schools. The participating children’s favorite meals are tacos, chicken wraps, and chicken dumplings.

Utah Food Bank Programs

Kids Cafe

BackPack Program

This program works in conjunction with after-school programs to ensure that children at risk of hunger have access to food to get them through weekends when they lack access to school meal programs. Each Friday during the school year, participating children receive a nondescript backpack containing easy-to-prepare, child-friendly food to help sustain them until they return to school on Monday. Last year, Utah Food Bank packed and delivered 69,900 backpacks of food to 32 sites for children facing hunger, helping to ensure countless hunger-free weekends.

Page 13: Utah Food Bank: Annual Report 2012-2013

Utah Food Bank provides free, monthly food assistance to low-income homebound seniors and people with disabilities. Each food box contains approximately one week’s worth of non-perishable food, along with milk, bread, and fresh produce when available. Utah Food Bank is often the recipient of additional “luxury” items such as pet food and flowers that, when delivered, make life just a little nicer for those facing hunger. For many recipients, this regular visit by a caring volunteer is often one of the few visitors they receive, offering a bright spot in their difficult lives. Last year, Utah Food Bank delivered 12,363 boxes to clients throughout the Salt Lake Valley.

Food Box Program

Commodity Supplemental Food Program (CSFP)

This federally funded program works to improve the health of low-income seniors at least 60 years of age, pregnant and breastfeeding women, new mothers up to one year postpartum, and children up to their sixth birthday. The USDA provides supplemental, nutritious food items which are shipped directly to Utah Food Bank and include items such as canned fruits, vegetables, cereal, cheese, and more. Last year, Utah Food Bank delivered 28,832 CSFP boxes, which are hand-delivered by volunteers and staff to individual residents and senior housing sites or picked up at local pantries.

Page 14: Utah Food Bank: Annual Report 2012-2013

For the 8th year in a row, Utah has been crowned as the top state for volunteerism, with almost 44% of residents reporting that they volunteered in 2012.* Last year, Utah Food Bank reaped the benefit of this spirit of volunteerism, engaging over 65,000 volunteers who collectively donated 103,014 hours of service. This is the equivalent of hiring an additional 49 full-time employees — something the budget simply can’t accommodate. Whether assisting with Mobile Pantry operations, serving Kids Cafe meals, delivering thousands of food boxes to homebound seniors and people with disabilities, assembling BackPack food packages, or working tirelessly in both our Salt Lake and St. George warehouses, Utah Food Bank volunteers are a tremendous asset in helping to fulfill the mission. Volunteers also engaged in special events, food drives, and served on the Board of Directors and advisory committees.

A broad and diverse range of individuals and organizations regularly participate in volunteer efforts including family groups, faith-based organizations, corporate groups, juvenile justice and youth groups, special needs programs, school groups, and social and community groups.

Volunteer Support

Page 15: Utah Food Bank: Annual Report 2012-2013

Last year, the volunteer department focused on developing a scheduling framework and project management strategy to maximize efficiency, ensuring the distribution of sufficient quantities and diverse types of food to our 130 partner agencies across the state. This focus has also led to a more positive experience for volunteers.

Each year Utah Food Bank celebrates volunteerism at the Open Hearts Helping Hands luncheon. Last year, the following volunteers were honored for their dedication to our mission through volunteer service:

§§ Corporate Group of the Year: Discover Financial Services, LLC

§§ School Group of the Year: J.E. Cosgriff Memorial Catholic School

§§ Board Member of the Year: Clark Wood

§§ Individual Volunteer of the Year: Pam Stein

§§ Group of the Year: National Charity League, Inc. Salt Lake City Chapter

Put simply, without such an incredibly strong and engaged volunteer base, Utah Food Bank could not possibly provide this essential lifeline for Utahns struggling with hunger.

The Summer Business Food & Fund Drive comes at a crucial time when demand is high, but donations are low. This food and fund drive is designed to engage Utah’s business community in the fight against hunger because they, like hunger, do not take summer breaks. Last year’s efforts yielded enough funds to distribute the equivalent of more than 740,000 meals, with over 100 businesses participating.

During Hunger Action Month, national attention turns to the issue of hunger. Utah Food Bank offers multiple opportunities and events to engage Utahns throughout the month. This month-long focus on hunger awareness culminates in a statewide food drive that last year resulted in enough food to provide the equivalent of almost 555,000 meals for Utahns facing hunger. Walmart locations statewide served as donation drop-off points for food.
