Scouting the Opposition:LMU: The Lions open their season with UV and it will be the first meeting between the two schools. LMU is coming off a 19-11 season in 2005 and its third straight appearance at the NCAA Volleyball Championships.

LMU is one of three NCAA tournament teams on the Wolverine’s schedule. The 2005 postseason appearance was LMU’s seventh trip to the NCAAs in the last nine years. The Lions fell to UV in-state rival Utah in the first round.

LMU will be led by First-Team All-West Coast Conference performer, Heather Hughes. She averaged 3.27 k/g and hit at a .237 clip for the Lions in 2005.

ASU: The Sun Devils return 12 players from last year’s team that went 8-20 (3-15 in Pac-10). ASU was picked to finish ninth in the conference by Pac-10 coaches.

The Sun Devils face a tough schedule in 2006 with 15 of their 29 opponents being ranked in the Top 25, including six with Top 10 teams.

ASU will be led by All-Pac-10 honorable mention selections Sydney Donahue and Nicole Morton and Pac-10 All-Freshman Margie Giordano. In 2005, Donahue averaged 6.41 d/g, Morton averaged 3.57 k/g, and Giordano averaged 2.53 kills and 2.54 digs per game.

NU: The Huskies are coming off a 2005 season where they finished 11-16 (8-10 in CAA) overall.

NU will be led by seniors Ashley Reeves and Chelsea Carroll, and sophomore Lauren DeTurk. DeTurk and Reeves were two and three, respectively, in the kills per game category last season. DeTurk notched 2.40 k/g, while Reeves tallied 2.21 k/g. Carroll shared setting duties last season averaging 5.26 a/g.

Up Next: The Wolverines will be back in Utah on Tuesday, August 29 to take on in-state rival Weber State in Ogden at 7:00 pm.

New Zealand/Samoa Tour ~ Summer 2006

In May 2006 the Utah Valley State Wolverine volleyball team went on a 13 day tour of New Zealand and Samoa they will never forget. The tour in New Zealand included matches against the National Team and Junior National Team, speaking engagements at the Church College of New Zealand and the University of Hamilton, and opportunities to put on clinics and donate needed volleyball equipment to local schools in Auckland.

Samoa was a chance for head coach Sam Atoa to show his team where he was born and raised. The Wolverines collected more equipment to pass out to schools, brought toys and smiles to the sick children at the National Hospital of Samoa, and spent Mother’s Day (a national holiday in Samoa) presenting a musical program to the elderly at a Catholic home. The last day of the Wolverine journey was spent at the “Return to Paradise” beach.

Sam Atoa enters his 8th year at the helm of the Utah Valley State

women’s volleyball program, and his fourth season competing at the

NCAA Division I level.

Atoa’s spikers have improved each year at the D-I level and 2005 was a

break out season for the Wolverines finishing with

a school record 18 wins. UV won 10 of its last 11

matches on way to the Independent Tournament

Championship. Atoa was named the Division I

Independent “Coach of the Year” in 2005.

In its second season as a Division I program

in 2004 the Wolverines finished with an 11-16

record that included wins over Memphis, Central

Florida, Montana, Portland State, and Boise

State. As well as two wins each over fellow D-I

Independent teams: Texas A&M-Corpus Christi

and Texas Pan American.

In the first year of D-I competition in 2003, Atoa

led the Wolverine volleyball program to a 10-14

record, including wins over D-I opponents, Boise

State and Pac-10 power Washington State.

Atoa took over the reins of the UVSC volleyball

program in 1999 after six years as an assistant

to former head coach Lori Richards. In his

first season at the helm of the UVSC volleyball

program Atoa led the Wolverines to a 32-12

record. UVSC just missed a trip to the national

tournament with a tight, five-set loss in the

district championship. Then, in just his second

season at the helm, Atoa led UVSC to the national

tournament and a third place finish in the

nation. The third place finish equalled UVSC’s

best showing ever at nationals. Atoa was named

Tachikara/AVCA Junior College National Coach

of the Year and Region 18 Coach of the Year. In

2002, Atoa led the Wolverines to a sixth place

finish at nationals.

During his collegiate playing days, Atoa was a terror on the court. He

played for Brigham Young University from 1984 to 1988, and was

named a Collegiate Club All-American. Dubbed “Sam the Wham,” by the

BYU media, Atoa was the big gun in the Cougars’ run of three National

Collegiate Club Championships. He was an assistant coach for the BYU

men’s program from 1989 to 1991. He has also directed his own summer

volleyball camp program, “Atoa Volleyball Camps,” for several years. His

camps are designed for high school and junior high players, and have

been conducted in Utah, Arizona, Nevada, and Idaho.

Atoa has also taught physical education classes

at UVSC, and directed the intramural sports

program from 1993-2001. He was also the

tournament director for the NJCAA national

championships in 1997 and 1998.

Atoa was born and raised in Apia, Samoa, and

has a rich cultural and athletic background. He

is highly honored and respected in his country,

having received the Papalii or “Son of the King”

title from the Head of State of Samoa, His

Highness Malietoa Tanumafili II. Atoa went to

high school at the Church College of Western

Samoa, but developed his volleyball skills in

church and government leagues, because the

school did not have a varsity volleyball program.

Atoa played rugby, soccer, tennis, and basketball

in these leagues too. But the bulk of his time was

devoted to volleyball and basketball, which were

very popular in the Islands. With his advanced

talent and size, he found himself playing on adult

teams in these leagues, while he was yet in his

early teens. “I learned a lot by playing with older,

more experienced players,” said Atoa. “I also

learned the proper fundamentals as a youngster,

thanks to the influence of a number of American

teachers and instructors. Most of the teachers at

our school were from the States.”

After graduating from high school, Atoa went

to BYU Hawaii and played volleyball for two

years at the NAIA level. He was named his

team’s Most Improved Player. He earned his way

through school by entertaining and dancing at

the Polynesian Cultural Center. In 1982, he left

for a two-year LDS Church mission to San Jose,

California. After that, he landed at BYU and earned a spot on the club

team that went on to attain national prominence.

Atoa and his wife, Lori, reside in Orem and are the parents of five

children: Sam, Bradley, Devri, Andrew, and Darci.

Expectations are high in 2006 as the Utah Valley State volleyball team, led by 2005 Division I Independent Coach of the Year, Sam Atoa will try to match the triumphs of last season.

The Wolverine volleyball program finished with an 18-11 record in 2005 and won nine of their last ten matches on way to the D-I Independent Tournament Championship. Atoa’s group takes a current eight match winning streak into this year.

UV returns seven players in 2006 and welcomes 10 newcomers to Orem and looks to have the firepower to defend its title. Below is a position-

by-position outlook of the 2006 Wolverine spikers.

SETTERS: All-time Wolverine assist leader, Lacee Koelliker returns for her final campaign in Orem. The 2005 Division I Setter of the Year and First Team All-Independent player owns every setting record at UV. She has tallied close to 3,000 assists in her first three seasons. As Koelliker goes, the Wolverines will go in 2006.

“She brings everything a coach wants,” said Atoa. “Leadership, coachability, and

preparation for each match. She has it all.”

Cal State Northridge transfer, Gini Mendenhall will also vie for playing time.

“She brings depth, she brings experience, and her setting skills are very good,” said Atoa about Mendenhall. “With Gini and Lacee we have the best one-two setting punch we’ve ever had since we’ve been Division I.”

DEFENSE: Junior Chelsea Baugh and sophomore Bethany Carron return from last year’s squad and will be called upon to help stabilize the back row.

“We are leaning on Chelsea with her experience to be able to step into a major role on the back row,” said Atoa. “She is a very quick athlete.”

“Bethany improves every year. She doesn’t lack any motivation or desire to want to get better,” said Atoa.

Freshmen Kaui Piena and Ashley Santiago will also help to add needed security on the back row.

“Defensively Kaui adds the depth we need to get to the ball quicker,” said Atoa. “Ashley also does a nice job for us.”

MIDDLE BLOCKERS: Junior Jessica Endres returns having started the last two years. She was named First Team All-Independent last season and should be a major force in the middle.

“She has the ability to dominate on the court and I don’t expect anything less from her,” said Atoa about Endres.

Seniors Brooke Adams and Stephanie McFarland return for their final seasons having also been very valuable on the front row. They will both be seen causing havoc for opponents in the middle on a regular basis. Two-time junior college All-Region performer, Ashley Brown and redshirt freshman Kristin Bromley will also fight for time making the middle core as deep as any UV has ever seen.

“I expect our middles to anchor our offense,” said Atoa.

Local standout, Dani Robison (Orem HS) will be asked to redshirt in 2006 so she can learn the offense.

OUTSIDE HITTERS: Division I Independent Newcomer of the Year and Second Team All-Independent performer, Camie Manwill returns for her sophomore campaign after having an outstanding freshman year. She will see major time on the outside and will be complimented by Weber State transfers, Kaylie Kortsen and Ashley Dallin.

“It was a great surprise to see Camie step into a role that not many people are able to do as a freshman last season,” said Atoa. “She was awesome for us, and will only continue to improve.”

“Adding Kaylie and Ashley is going to be a huge plus to our outside group,” said Atoa.

RIGHTSIDE HITTERS: The rightside will also feature a couple of transfers in Terin Ledall (Northern Colorado) and Brooke Wilson (Eastern Utah). McFarland will see time on the rightside as well.

Ledall, who didn’t play last season, is not an unfamiliar face for the Wolverines. In 2003, she was the Division I Independent Freshman of the Year and in 2004 notched Honorable Mention All-Independent honors.

“If Terin continues to do what she did at UNC it will be very beneficial to us,” said Atoa.

Wilson, who redshirted last year at UV because of medical reasons, will battle for time on both sides of the front row.

“Brooke adds major depth to both the rightside and the outside,” said Atoa.

Atoa’s one goal for the 2006 season was to improve on a great 2005 performance and he looks to have the group to do it.

“We’ve added a few players more than what we had last year,” said Atoa. “It will make for more competitive practices, more depth, and hopefully a successful season.”

The Wolverines open the 2006 season on the road competing in the Sun Devil Classic hosted by Arizona State. UV will play Loyola Marymount on Friday, August 25 at 6:00 pm (MST), followed by a doubleheader against Arizona State (1 pm MST) and Northeastern (6 pm MST) on Saturday, August 26.

2006 Season Outlook

Seniors Brooke Adams (1) and Stephanie McFarland (9) return for their final seasons in Orem.

Sophomore Camie Manwill (14) will be a crowd pleaser in the Shurian Family Activity Center in 2006.
