The College of Allied Health Sciences: A Summary The University of Tennessee Board of Trustees created the College of Allied Health Sciences in 1972 to bring the University in step with national trends in allied health education. It has grown from that time to become one of the most notable colleges of allied health in the nation. We would like to share some interesting facts with you about each of the allied health education programs at the UT Health Science Center. • The Medical Technology Program is the oldest such program in the country. It was established in 1923 and has produced more graduates than any other medical technology program in Tennessee. • The Dental Hygiene Program was established in 1926. The department offers degrees in both bachelor and master level programs. One graduate and two faculty members of this program have served as president of the American Dental Hygienists' Association. • The Cytotechnology Program established in 1951, is one of the first programs of its kind in the country. It is the only cytotechnology program in Tennessee. It is among the first in the country to offer an entry level Master of Cytopathology Practice Degree. This program now also prepares students for certification in histotechnology. • Health Informatics and Information Management was the first HIM program in the state of Tennessee, the first to offer a B.S. in Health Information Management and now is the first to offer a Master’s in Health Informatics and Information Management. Started in 1954, it is one of the oldest programs in the country. Graduates have outstanding pass rates on the national credentialing examination and serve in leadership roles throughout Tennessee and the country. • The Physical Therapy Program, established in 1965, was the first PT school to open in Tennessee. The program now admits one class of entry-level students each year and is nationally ranked for its excellence among entry level programs. As of September 2003, the Doctor of Physical Therapy degree is the entry level degree in the program. The program also offers a transitional DPT program (initiated July 2004), an MSPT program (initiated 1992) and the ScDPT program (initiated 2003). These programs meet the needs for physical therapy practitioners with entry level as well as advanced clinical, administrative, and educational skills. • The Occupational Therapy Program, established in 1988, was the the first bachelor level occupational therapy program in Tennessee. Over 400 students have graduated and entered the work force since the program’s inception. The Master of Occupational Therapy program replaced the baccalaureate program in 2005 and graduated its first class in May 2007. • The Department of Audiology and Speech Pathology is nationally ranked and emphasizes excellence in advanced research and student preparation for professional practice.

Dean’s Welcome

It is a tremendous pleasure for me to welcome you to the College of Allied Health Sciences. I want to congratulate you on being accepted into our stellar programs and to affirm your decision to attend the University of Tennessee Health Science Center.

The College of Allied Health Sciences is one of the most diverse colleges at UTHSC. We have seven departments: Audiology and Speech Pathology, which is on the University of Tennessee-Knoxville campus, Clinical Laboratory Sciences, Dental Hygiene, Health Informatics and Information Management, Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy, and Physician Assistant Studies. We have undergraduate, masters and doctoral programs. Some of you are entering two-year programs, some are entering into three-year programs, and some of you are entering into four-year programs. I promise you that irrespective of the level of the degree you are seek-ing and length of your program of study, you will graduate with astrong academic and clinical foundation so that you will be able to pursue a rewarding career in health care. The mission of the UT Health Science Center is to bring the benefits of the health sciences to the achievement and maintenance of human health. By our teaching, clinical practice, and research, the College of Allied Health Sciences embraces and embodies that mission. Student Academic Support Services (SASS)

Services for Students (Local and Distant)Students enrolled at UTHSC have the following resources available with the purpose of

positively impacting learning, adjustment and performance.

1. Consultations (in person, online, phone). Consultations can be scheduled by emailing the SASS at SASS@uthsc.edu or calling 901 448-5056. SASS appointments can be scheduled during the hours or 8 AM – 5 PM CST. If an appointment is needed after hours, please contact the front desk at the number above.

2. SASS Web-Education Series and materials. The SASS Staff have been developed application-based strategies and materials using input from students with an emphasis on “what works”. The goal is to impact adjustment to the curriculum and match preparation with performance on tests.

To access SASS Web-Education and materials, please go to Blackboard. Then, click on Student Academic Support Services then Course Documents. Scroll to Workshops. Here you will find the SASS Web-Education Series: Test Taking for the Health Sciences, Getting the Most from Your Time, Maximizing Learning Approaches, Test Anxiety, Reading Rate and Comprehension, Board Prep., and Accessing Services for Students with Disabilities. A video tour of the SASS is also available.

3. SASS Library. Resources and books in the SASS Library have been specifically selected, when available for purchase, for the courses within each college and program. These can include question books, review books, flashcards, etc. for the basic science areas (Anatomy, Physiology, Histology, etc.) and board prep. These resources can assist students in getting through the material more efficiently along with providing application and integration of concepts and details.

4. SASS Study Space. A 24-hour access, study area is available in the SASS located in the basement of the GEB. Along with 13 private study cubicles and five group rooms, there are couches, a microwave, coffee pot and water fountain.

5. Computers in the SASS. The SASS has 26 computers for student use Monday – Thursday, 8 AM – 1 PM and 2 -7 PM, Friday, 8 AM – 1 PM and 2 – 5 PM, Saturday, 10 AM – 5 PM and Sunday, 2 -6 PM.
