The Ballad of Sweeney Todd Company

Synopsis After the Prologue, the show opens with Anthony (a sailor) and Sweeney coming on stage. Anthony is your basic tenor hero type and sings about how he loves London. Sweeney is dark and brooding and sings about how he hates London. It is revealed that Anthony, while at sea, discovered Sweeney drifting alone in a boat and rescued him. A crazy beggar woman shows up (she does this periodically throughout the show), sings some vague, cryptic things, and is chased away by Sweeney. Sweeney sings a little bit more about how life (and London) is really bad.

Sweeney visits a pie shop, where Mrs. Lovett (the owner) sings about how her pies are awful and she’s broke. She then tells Sweeney about the room above her store. It belonged to a barber named Benjamin Barker. Then Judge Turpin sent him to a penal colony because he (and his Beadle) wanted to seduce Benjamin’s wife, Lucy. The two tricked Lucy and raped her during a party at the judge’s house. She then poisoned herself, and Turpin took legal guardianship of Benjamin’s daughter, Johanna. Sweeney Todd is re-vealed as Benjamin Barker, come back for revenge. Mrs. Lovett reveals that she has saved his razors. Meanwhile, Johanna (now a young woman confined to the Judge’s house) sings an aria. Anthony wanders by. Instant chemistry. The Judge and the Beadle chase him away. Else-where, Todd challenges the local barber, Pirelli, to a contest and wins. Pirelli sings a lot like one of the three tenors. The Beadle witnesses the event and promises to visit Todd for a shave.

The Judge sings a nasty old man song and proposes to Johanna. Back at the barbershop, Anthony reveals that he’s in love with a girl named Johanna (not knowing the connection). Pirelli shows up with his lackey Tobias and tries to blackmail Todd. Todd strangles him. Lovett gets Tobias drunk. Meanwhile, Anthony and Johanna plan to run away together, and the Beadle tells the Judge to go see Todd. The Judge does, and Todd almost kills him, but Anthony shows up and blows the whole thing. The Judge storms out and Todd goes crazy and vows to kill all of mankind. Lovett gets the idea to cook Pirelli in a pie, and the two sing a song about all the different possible “flavors.” End of Act 1. Lovett’s meat pies are now selling great. Tobias is working for her as a bus-boy/salesman. In the next song, Antho-ny searches for Johanna, Todd kills peo-ple, and the Beggar Woman sings that Lovett is cooking humans in her pies. Anthony shows up and tells Todd where Johanna is (an asylum). Todd helps him plan her escape, then writes to the Judge about it. Tobias reveals his suspi-cions to Lovett about Todd. She locks him in the bake house.Todd kills the Beadle and sends the body into the bake house. Tobias, seeing the body arrive, escapes through a trap door. Anthony deposits Johanna, disguised, in the bar-bershop. She hides when the Beggar Woman shows up....

Jade Andrews, Chorus Grade: 9 For Jade, it is an honor being a part of such an elaborate production like Sweeney Todd. Though she is just a choral part, it is still a worthwhile experience that she will cherish for many years. Jade’s interest in the performing arts began when she was 8. She was involved in the many wonderful "It’s a Zoo Theater Competitions" put on by her elementary school. It has only blossomed with time and she has additionally performed in Utica’s famous "Scrooge" production put on by the Players of Utica club for the past four years. Being a freshman at Proctor High School, this is the first musical Jade has been a part of. It’s been an amazing experience working with her fellow cast members, as they are all exceptional performers. She looks forward to being part of Proctor’s fantastic drama program for many years to come. Amina Badnjevic, The Beggar Woman Grade: 12 As a senior, this is Amina's final production in Proctor. She has been cast in multiple lead roles since 9th grade. Amina started off strong with a lead role in Harvey, her first production, and ends with a lead role in her final production, Sweeney Todd. She's going to miss Drama Club and everyone she has met because of it. The club has connected her to many productions outside of school. Amina's Drama Club memo-ries include a trip to NYC, lead roles, friends, and a second family. She's very thank-ful for this club and everything it has done for her. Janell Capparelli, Stage Crew Grade: 9 Janell is a 9th grade student at Proctor. She just joined the Drama Club at the begin-ning of the year. She has helped with the stage crew for both productions. Janell is dedicated to Drama Club. She is a very hard worker who helps the productions turn out great! Adam Cowley, Pirelli Grade: 12 Adam Cowley indulges himself in a new and unique character named "Pirelli" in this year’s production of "Sweeney Todd." Adam has always had a passion for the arts, ever since he was a child, and has been in Drama Club since the ninth grade. Adam says, “I've always enjoyed being on stage or in front of a camera. Just the thought of being seen and admired by millions is exhilarating! I think the most fun part of thea-tre is character development and that's why I'm absolutely thrilled to be playing the role of Pirelli! Playing with Pirelli's multiple accents was a bit hard, but I'm always up for the challenge! I definitely see myself on Broadway or the big screen in the near future.” This will be Adam's last production at Proctor before he graduates. He wishes his friends and colleagues the best of luck! Nyia Sammone Elliott, Chorus Grade: 10 This is her second year in Drama Club. Nyia loves to act/dance (currently lyrical and hip-hop), draw and write plays as well. She is also involved in NJROTC which is a navy program at Proctor High School. Nyia wants to pursue a career in performing arts.

Student Biographies

Renee Gagnon, Tobias Grade: 12 Renee has been a theatre geek since 5th grade. From the various plays and musicals she has been in, some of her favorite roles include Violet Beaure-gard (Charlie & the Chocolate Factory), Adelaide (Guys & Dolls), and Katrina (The Legend of Sleepy Hollow). She doesn't plan on going to school for theatrical arts, but plans on being a teacher and possibly teaching a drama or music class. Best wishes to this high school senior! Sean D. Hastings, Beadle Bamford Grade: 10 Sean D. Hastings is Beadle Bamford in Sweeney Todd. He's very musical and is inspired to be a music major in college. As the Beadle he is glad, as al-ways to oblige his friends and neighbors. Annabella Kajtezovic, Chorus Grade: 12 As an individual who decided to join Drama Club a little too late in her high school career, Annabella is absolutely thankful that she joined at all. With AP classes and babysitting, one would find it excruciatingly aggravat-ing to be a part of any extracurricular activities, however Drama Club has found its way into her heart and she plans on participating in theatre during university. With several choices to pick from, Annabellais sure that acting will play a beautiful role in her adult life. Alexandria Kraeger, Johanna Grade: 9 Alexandria Kraeger takes part in this production as Johanna, Judge Turpin’s ward. She is in 9th grade and has done plays since she was in 7th grade in Donovan Middle School. This will be her first major role. She has al-ways loved the fine arts. Whether it was singing, art ,or dancing classes, the arts have always made an appearance in her life. Kayleen Leddick, Tobias (Toby) Ragg Grade: 11 Kayleen Leddick was delighted to portray the role of Toby in this year's production of Sweeney Todd. She is a junior here at Proctor and is involved heavily in the music programs. Music and theatre is a big part of her life and she plans to pursue them more in the future. Kayleen is also a part of Proctor's Symphonic Orchestra as a violinist. She would like to thank eve-ryone for their support and help during this production and she hopes to see you all for the shows to come. Olivia Martello, Police Officer Grade: 10 Olivia is a sophomore at Proctor High School. This is her first year in Dra-ma Club and she is loving every minute of it. Her first role was a pirate in The Legend of Sleepy Hollow. Olivia would like to pursue writing and psychol-ogy after high school. She would like to thank her family for all their sup-port. Amajla Tricic, Young Lucy Grade: 11 Amajla Tricic is seventeen and a junior. She enjoys theatre and reading. Amajla wants to be involved in the film industry and she aspires to be a writer. Her previous roles were in Sleepy Hollow and Footloose and she plays young Lucy in Sweeney Todd. Above all, she loves getting lost in new worlds.

Never forget how to shoot apples in the kitchen with Miss Scarlet.” Cassidy Brown, Chorus Grade 12 Cassidy Brown, a senior, appears as woman number three and a lunatic in this year's production of Sweeney Todd.
