these aesthetically pleasing New England inspired villages with vintage rural character. Founded in 1787 by pioneers from Connecticut, the picturesque Village of Clinton was widely known during the 19th century for its many private secondary schools, a distinction that earned it the nickname “Schooltown.” For nearly 100 years, Clinton’s academies and seminaries met the educational needs of hundreds of students throughout the Northeast, including U.S. president Grover Cleveland, Red Cross founder Clara Barton and transcontinental railroad visionary and university founder Leland Stanford. Hamilton College, which sits atop a hill overlooking the village was founded in 1793 as the Hamilton-Oneida Academy by the Reverend Samuel Kirkland, a missionary to the Oneida Indians, it was chartered as a college in 1812. Today it stands as one of America’s oldest and finest liberal arts colleges. Among its many prestigious alumni are abolitionist Gerrit Smith, U.S. Vice President James Sherman, painter Daniel
Huntington, poet Ezra Pound, and distinguished statesman Elihu Root. A Clinton native, Mr. Root won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1912, and for many years his family tended to the gardens in the glen behind the Root homestead on the Hamilton campus. Today, the Root Glen is open to the public and has become a favorite spot for quiet walks among the shaded red-shale paths to admire 65 species of trees, shrubs, plants and flowers. Hamilton’s Ruth and Elmer Wellin Museum includes over 6,000 works of art and artifacts, representing a broad range of cultures, historical periods, and artistic practices and movements. The Village of Clinton has over 100 years of hockey history. In 2018 Clinton earned the coveted designation as a Kraft Hockeyville USA community! Hockey fans revelled as the Buffalo Sabres and Columbus Blue Jackets took to the ice at historic Clinton Arena for an NHL pre-season game highlighting a week of national exposure for the charming little Village.
without limitations. The complex features an equine-assisted therapy center with an 8,000 sq ft heated riding arena and a diverse agriculture center. Root Farm Adventures is a fully accessible high ropes challenge course, zipline and climbing wall for individuals of all abilities. The villages of Waterville and Oriskany Falls draw visitors for their graceful settings, pleasing bygone-era architecture, unique eateries, eclectic stores, and historic sites. Oriskany Falls was aptly named for the waterfalls in the center of town, formed by Oriskany Creek. In September, check out Cruisin’ Into Waterville with entertainment for all ages including a huge car show featuring classic cars, hot rods and motorcycles, a parade, 5K run/walk, craft fair, BBQ cookout, and chili cook-off. If being immersed in history is your ideal getaway, Oneida County is the perfect destination. Located at the convergence of many important travel routes, an extraordinarily diverse
amount of significant history happened here. In Rome, visitors can tour “the fort that never surrendered,” Fort Stanwix National Monument. Best known for successfully thwarting an intense siege in 1777, Fort Stanwix was built to protect traders during the French and Indian War, then played a key role in the Revolutionary War. Just six miles away at the Oriskany Battlefield, explore the site of one of the Revolutionary War’s most deadly battles. Considered by many to be a critical turning point in the War, hundreds of brave soldiers lost their lives in Oriskany, fighting for American independence. Continue on the Revolutionary trail with a visit to the Baron Von Steuben Memorial State Historic Site in Remsen. In Sherrill, the Oneida Community Mansion House offers an intriguing tour that lends insight into a mysterious Utopian community that endured for decades—even though marriage was not allowed. The building of the Erie Canal was heralded as an engineering marvel. The first dig began in Rome on July 4, 1817, and it sparked countless cultural and commercial develop-ments across New York State and America. Today you can take a relaxing cruise aboard Erie Canal Cruises for a historic narration of this iconic National Heritage Corridor and National Landmark. See Utica’s astounding bygone architecture and decorative arts at Fountain Elms on the campus of Munson-Williams- Proctor Arts Institute. Learn about Oneida Indian Nation history and heritage at Shako:wi Cultural Center, explore engaging exhibits and artifacts to connect with our passion for the past. Interested in the history of American sports? Check out the winning race car of nine time NASCAR national champion, and Rome native, Richie Evans at the Rome Sports Hall of Fame. 12 Picks For A Fresh Experience
Eight foot by eight foot colorful quilt block patterns adorn numerous barns and outbuildings throughout Oneida County’s farm community. In 2010, the Oneida County Women in Farming Discussion Group wanted to bring attention to farms and regain awareness of the large agricultural industry in Oneida County. They undertook a roadside barn quilt initiative to hand paint traditional quilt patterns on large plywood boards and the Oneida County Barn Quilt Trail was born. Take a self-driving tour through the lush scenic farmlands of Oneida County to discover a rich history of agriculture and family traditions. oneidacountytourism.com/barn-quilt-trail

ish for anything? From eight-inch bluegills to fat walleyes to big, muscular carp to relentlessly combative smallmouth bass? How about fly fishing for trout? For many anglers, it’s
way more than a hobby. It’s more like a lifestyle, and there are plenty of opportunities to live it right here in Oneida County. We have more than 100 miles of public fishing rights on trout creeks and rivers in the county, and hundreds more that run through state lands or are accessible by landowner permission. Oriskany Creek is one favorite destination. It is easily accessed, and it is terrific, with many wild fish in the upstream areas, includ-ing occasional brook trout, and some bruisers in its last few miles as it flows toward the Mohawk River. West Canada Creek has an even bigger reputation, and for good reason—it offers the real possibility of a 20-inch brown on any trip. It has been regarded as one of New York’s top trout streams just about forever, and it’s been even better since the DEC began stocking two-year-old fish more than 20 years ago. There are many other choices: Sconondoa Creek, Sauquoit Creek, the upper Mohawk River, the east and west branches of Fish Creek, and several others with low-key reputations that offer high-end experiences. Not into fly fishing? There are innumerable waters where you can fish with bait or lures for almost any species with great success. Oneida Lake and Lake Delta are terrific walleye and bass fisheries, and the Mohawk River and Erie “Barge” Canal offer a wide variety of species, including occasional northern pike of impressive dimensions. Home of 28 Golf Courses within 28 Minutes
ith 28 courses within 28 minutes, golfers can immerse themselves in an entire vacation of course exploration. Valley View course in Utica was designed by the famous
Robert Trent Jones Sr., whose design philosophy was “a golf hole should be a hard par and an easy bogey.” Rome Country Club’s beautiful course is completely irrigated (roughs, too!) and is rated four stars by Golf Digest. The Club’s owner Wes Cupp and his wife Lauren are world renowned Speedgolf champions! Be sure to check out the annual Speedgolf tournament held every sum-mer at Rome Country Club.
Turning Stone Casino Resort has five spectacular courses, three of which are PGA-level, 18-hole championship courses. Atunyote and Kaluhyat were each honored on Golf Digest’s prestigious America’s 100 Greatest Public Courses list for 2015-2019. Looking for a more relaxed game? Play Pleasant Knolls, a player-friendly recreational course offering 9 holes of par 36 golf. Golfers in a hurry will appreciate a round at Sandstone Hollow. Designed by legendary course architect Rick Smith, with the busy golfer in mind, the Hollow ranks among the top 25 par 3 courses in the United States.

entral New York is a four season recreational destination, with plenty of SNOW for those who
love downhill skiing, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, ice fishing and snowmobiling. Oneida County is home to 12 snow-mobile clubs, the highest number of club members cumulatively across New York State. These all-volunteer crews maintain over 560 miles of groomed trails. A large portion of the County receives significant amounts of snowfall each year. From the hills in the South, with Tassel Hill at 1940’ above sea level; to Oneida Lake perfect for ice fishing; to the northeastern gateway of the Adirondack Park and the northwestern trails connecting to the world-renown Tug Hill Region . . . the Oneida County trail system is a premier snowmobiling destination with family friendly ameni-ties located on or near the trails. Our cities offer endless opportunities for outdoor and indoor winter sports. AHL pro hockey team Utica Comets, and the
Utica College Pioneers play on home ice at the Adirondack Bank Center Utica Memorial Auditorium to thousands of cheering hockey fans each season. The new NEXUS Center will open in late 2020 offering 140,000 sq ft of flexible space for hockey, as well as indoor sports and expo events. The Utica Curling Club dates back to 1868, and with six sheets of ice, it’s the oldest and largest curling club in the eastern US. The BREIA Trails are a cross-country skier’s paradise covering more than 31 miles (50km), making it one of the largest groomed X-country ski systems in the east. If downhill is more your style, skiers of all ages can hit the slopes—or tube—at Woods Valley Ski Area. Embrace winter and get away to play in the snow and on the ice in Oneida County!

Dear Traveler, On behalf of the 400+ members of the Mohawk Valley Association of REALTORS®, thank you for visiting our beautiful region. We sincerely hope that your time here in Oneida County is everything you expect, and much more. For those of us who live, work and play here, the Mohawk Valley is our home. And like all good neighbors, we’re happy to share our home with you. The Oneida County region delivers four full seasons of outdoor living, theater and enter-tainment, night life and activities. There’s camping, fishing and boating in the summer. For winter enthusiasts, we have hundreds of miles of snowmobile trails to explore, as well as access to some of the best skiing in the Northeast. In the spring and fall, you’ll enjoy some of the most magnificent foliage in the nation. We are close to everything the great State of New York has to offer and many of the greatest attractions in the northeast are either in our own backyard or a quick day trip away.
