Plastic Bag Battle in KansasERIN DEGROOT, SOUTHWIND GROUP SECRETARY

February was tumultuous time for plasticbags and our cities' rights. The Kansas Houselooked to strip cities and counties of theirability to control plastic bags and single-useplastic waste via HB 2625, a bill establishedby Walmart lobbyists. As of 2/28, the bill isexempt from deadlines and will be heardsometime in March. We encourage all SierraClub members to contact your legislatorsnow and tell them to Vote NO on HB 2625.

If enacted as introduced, HB 2669 wouldeliminate the locally-driven petition process forlisting state threatened or endangered species. Itwould also eliminate the emergency petitionprocess that currently allows the secretary ofKDWPT to quickly provide protections for speciesunder immediate threat of extirpation or extinctionin Kansas. The hearing was Tuesday, Feb. 18and we'll follow up soon.
