Adult Swim Instruction - There are five different adult swimming levels to provide people of all abilities a chance to improve their comfort, technique and fitness in the water: Absolute Beginner, Basic Swim, Intermediate Swim, Stroke Mechanics and an Introductory Swim Training course.

Absolute Beginner - Level 1Never been in a pool and don’t know how to swim? This course has been designed to introduce new swimmers to the very basics in swimming skills: submerging the face in the water, breathing, buoyancy, and propulsion. Classes are taught in the shallow end. Women’s-only sessions are offered for this class.

Basic Swim - Level 2Been a long time since you’ve been in the water? Want to learn front and back crawl? This course has been designed to introduce swimmers to the two basic strokes: front and back crawl. It emphasizes the basics of front and back crawl in the shallow end and participants are introduced to treading water and deep water skills when they are ready. Swimming requirements: Swimmers must be able to swim 10 metres on their front with their face submerged and 10 metres on their backs. Women’s-only sessions are offered for this class.

Intermediate Swim - Level 3Looking to improve your swimming ability and go longer distances? Ready to swim in the deep end? This course has been designed for swimmers to continue to improve their front and back crawl technique. Swimmers will also be introduced to the breaststroke. This course will spend a lot of time in the deep end. Required swimming ability: must be able to swim 20 metres on front and back.

Stroke Mechanics - Level 4Comfortable swimming front crawl, back crawl and breast stroke? Ready to swim a few laps in a row? This course has been designed to focus on improving stroke technique in front crawl, back crawl and breaststroke. Dives, kicking drills and other strokes may also be taught. Required swimming ability: must be comfortable swimming in the deep end and be able to swim 25 metres front crawl, back crawl and breaststroke.

Introduction to Swim Training - Level 5Looking to do your workout in the pool? This course has been designed to help swimmers read, understand and create their own swim sets, learn about and practice pace times, learn the difference between sprints and endurance swimming, and introduce swim equipment into their swims to improve swimming technique and ability. Swimmers should be comfortable swimming front and back crawl, and an ability to swim breast stroke is preferred. Swimmers should also be able to swim 200 metres continuously.

REGISTERED ACTIVITIESMartial Arts and Mind & Body

New comers and beginners are welcome at all of these classes.

Aikido - a traditional Japanese martial art, relies on circular movements to redirect an attacker’s force and take their balance. Aikido employs throws, joint locks, and strikes. Renshinkai Aikido, the style practiced here, is known for its sharp, precise movements and effective self-defense techniques. By training proper form, superior position, and circular movement, the student learns technique which is effective against larger and stronger opponents.

Judo - develops stamina, speed and power and can be enjoyed by anyone. Judo is a combination of throws and hold-downs. An added feature of this program is the self defense component. This class is for participants of all levels.

Tai Chi - is a sequence of slow natural movements especially designed to improve one’s health by reducing body tension, improving circulation and breathing, and calming the mind. Though usually practiced in slow motion, Tai Chi is in fact a martial art whose self defense postures act to improve one’s reflexes, co-ordination and ability to use the whole body. Classic Yeung’s style Tai Chi has 88 movements; we will concentrate on different groups of movements for each of the terms.

NEW THIS YEAR!Purchase a yoga pass and attend all the instructional yoga classes. A limited number will be available and this is for members only. Non -members will still be able to register on a per course basis. See our website for more details and pricing. Class descriptions listed below

Flow Yoga - Vinyasa or flow yoga is a sequence of poses put together to flow in fluid movements. This class will take you through standing, seated and supine postures, ensuring that you’re working and relaxing every muscle in your body! This class is great for anybody, whether you’re new to yoga or a seasoned pro. Take the class at your own pace and get the most from this fun and active style of yoga.

Restorative Yoga - a gentle, passive stretch that allows a balance between mind, body and breath including guided breathing and relaxation. Postures are held up to 10 minutes each allowing a deeper level of relaxation and flexibility. Leave feeling relaxed, focused and rejuvenated.

Hatha Yoga - don’t be fooled by the traditionally slower paced association of the name ‘Hatha Yoga’. Hatha yoga uses various active and passive postures held for a longer period of time. Postures are held longer to deepen and challenge the muscle and mind experience of each one.

Power Yoga - a workout that offers strength, flexibility and mental focus (based on Ashtanga/Vinyasa style yoga). Pump up your heart by moving through active and passive postures in a fluid and faster pace than traditional Hatha style yoga. Sequencing and class pace varies by instructor.

RECREATIONAL SPORTCampus Recreation Intramural Leagues

All current UTM students, staff members and alumni members are welcome to participate in our Campus Rec Intramural Leagues. Students registered at St. George or at Scarborough are ineligible to participate.

In most sports there are multiple divisions offered to accommodate various skill levels. Students interested in playing, but who are unable to make a full team, should attend the Team Entry Meeting to try to find a team looking for players. Students who want to play but cannot attend the Team Entry Meeting should go to the Program Office, room 060 RAWC, to put their name on the Free Agent List for that league.

There are restrictions for teams in terms of the number of participants playing U of T Intramurals, Varsity Development Leagues and U of T or UTM Varsity. For most leagues, teams may have 4 IM points in Div. 1, 1 IM point in Div. 2 and 3 IM Points in an Open Division, unless posted otherwise in the league description. For more information on the IM point system visit our web page.

Captains or team representatives should pick up a team entry form at the Program Office or online and have it ready to submit at the Team Entry Meeting. Teams must attend the Team Entry Meeting to ensure they have a chance of getting into the league. A ballot system will be used at the Team Entry Meeting if there are more teams wanting to enter than available spots. This year all Team Entry Meetings will be held in Gym C.

Team reps who have entered a team at the Team Entry Meeting must submit their Performance Bonds to the Membership Services counter by 12 pm the day after the Team Entry Meeting. All Campus Rec League Team Performance Bonds are $50. Must pay by debit or credit. These bonds are refundable if your team does not default or incur fines. Once the team has paid its bond at Membership Services, it will be placed in the schedule.

OFFICIALS/TIMERS/SCORERS NEEDED!If you would like to officiate in any of our Intramural leagues please contact Cameron Walker, Program Coordinator, or stop by the Program Office.
