IChemE-UTP-SC is the club that represents the Chem-
ical Engineering Department of Universiti Teknologi
PETRONAS. It is the first student chapter under
IChemE Malaysia and was previously named
IChemE@UTP. “Advancing Professionalism”, as the
motto of the IChemE-UTP-SC implies, it serves as a
platform for the future young professionals to enhance
their expertise and proficiency prior to entering the
chemical industries. The goal is to guide the
participants towards better understanding on the
chemical industries and assist in finding the right
career path through mentoring opportunities from
corporate executives.

Boiling water with some vinegar added in the room
can remove offending odours. Most odours are found
to be alkali and vinegar, as we know, is an acid. Acid-base
neutralisation occurs between vinegar and the odours in the air.
Later, the smell of vinegar fades away together with the odours,
leaving the room deodorised.

2014 is on campus again! Several activities had
been carried out in this event which includes
Futsal Tournament, Technical Essay
Competition, Chemical Engineering Challenge
and Youth Social Responsibility. This year
CHEXPOSIUM is carried out from 27th of
February till 28th of March. The opening
ceremony has been successfully held at pocket

been prepared for this event.
CHEMICAL EXPOSURE SYMPOSIUM
The first event to officiate CHEXPOSIUM is the
futsal tournament. The tournament took place
on Saturday, 8th March at the block B football
field instead of the futsal court in Village 5 that
is undergoing renovation. It is a little
inconvenient for the field is different and there
are insufficient goalposts in the block B field.
Despite those shortcomings, the tourna-
ment still went on with full spirit from the
players. For this year’s tournament, there
are 9 teams competing. The tournament
last for two days. On the first day, all the 9
teams competed for the preliminary round
while on the second day, 9th of March; the
competition for the semifinals and lastly
the finals to decide the winner took place.
After a tiring Sunday morning, a winner
was found. Congratulations to the winner
– PISTACH futsal team! Bravo!

The next event we have in conjunction to
CHEXPOSIUM is the Technical Essay
Competition. Technical Essay Competition is a
platform for the students of Universiti
Teknologi PETRONAS to express their
thoughts through words. It provides a channel
for the students to give their own opinions and
their points of view on the topic given. This
encouraged the students to develop ideas and
concepts in their writing and inspire them to
be passionate in writing, practice comprehen-
sion, build up their vocabulary and improve
grammar skills.
The online registration
for this competition was
opened on 3rd March
and we had 49 students
who registered. On 7th March, the question
for the competition is released to the
participants with the aid from the judges and
the due date was set for 18th March. We have
a total of 21 participants who successfully
send in their work.
With the help of Mdm Gail Slyvia Steele and
Mdm Roselind Wan as the judges of this
competition, we had found our winners, they
are Irene Lock Sow Mei, Eric Teng Jing Han
and Yong Hong Yaw. Congratulations! Thank
you to all those who had participated.
TECHNICAL ESSAY COMPETITION
A new competition to the engineers-to-be out
there – Chemical Engineering Challenge, CEC.
This competition was first introduced on
NACES 2013 and is now being introduced to
UTP students to get to know more about this
competition. CEC is a team event consisting of
4 students in a team. A number of teams will
be eliminated in each stage and the winner
will be chosen at the last stage.
CEC was held for 2 days which is on the 19th
and 20th of March 2014. The competition
started with Stage 1, the written test with 16
teams that had registered earlier in the
morning. The test was held in Undercroft
Seminar Room 7. In this stage, 8 teams with
the highest marks calculated by the adding up
all the marks obtained by all 4 members will
go on to the next stage.
On the same day, Stage 2-the quiz section, is
next. This stage consists of two parts. The
first part is the True and False round and the
second part will be the buzzer round. From
this round 4 teams with the lowest marks
were eliminated which left us with the
remaining 4 teams with the highest marks to
qualify for the final stage.

Dr Yeong Yin Fong, Dr Bambang Ari-Wahjoedi
and Dr. Rajashekhar. The session lasted for one
hour.
The winners are decided by adding up all
their marks from Stage 1 to Stage 3. The
winner for the Chemical Engineering
Challenge 2014 is team “Find X”, followed
by team “Kiwifruit”. The second runner up
goes to team “Adrian Seng” and the fourth
place goes to the team “Papaya”. Well done
to all groups.
the ice-breaking session to get to know the
students. Before that the students were
grouped into different races and gender. In
order to get to know each other students
play the game “What’s your name?” and also
“Tangled”, where the students need to cross
and hold each other hand and then try to
un-tangled themselves.
The next session is the “Healthy Lifestyle”
session which aims to create awareness
among the students about the healthy
lifestyle.
In conjunction with CHEXPOSIUM 2014, our
committee members have organised Youth Social
Responsibility programme with the theme of
"Action! For Children! For Change!”. This event
was successfully held at the seminar room on
15th March 2014. In this event we bring in
primary school students from Tronoh, which
consist of SK Tronoh, SJK(T) Tronoh, SJK(C)
Chung Sun and SK Seri Tronoh to UTP to
conduct various program to benefit the school
students.
School students and the
teachers in charge
arrived at the Chancel-
lor Complex early in the morning and is given
breakfast. The event started with a speech given
by the VIPs, Dr Dzulkarnain Zaini (Advisor of
IChemE) and Mr. Marfauza Bin Mat Jusoh
(Senior Executive of Student Support Services
Department). The VIPs then officiated this event.
The event continues with some warm up which is
YOUTH SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY
Aerobic dance is then conducted followed by a
simple “bingo game” which is solved according to
the food classes, protein, carbohydrate, fiber and
so on. At noon, an ice-cream making session is
conducted. A science concept is used for the ice-
cream making where salt is used to decrease the
freezing point of the ice. The students are
educated with some knowledge of science
through this session.
The evening continues
with Chexplorace, a
treasure hunt game.
Students are required
to solve a task given
to them in each station. Marks are calculat-
ed to determine the winner. This event then
ended with the closing ceremony. Prizes for
each session are given to the group winners
and souvenirs are also distributed to all the
students. Before the students leave, a final
photography session was held to mark the
end of the event. We are happy to have all
the students with us. Hope you have enjoyed
it.

Mink is a recent 3D printer that prints makeup,
invented by a Harvard graduate, Grace Choi. It
allows users to create custom cosmetics at home.
Users can choose any colour that they favour, be it on the web or from the photos captured,
then transmit the colour code to programmes like Photoshop or Microsoft Paint and print that
colour into lipstick, blush, eye-shadow, creams and etc. The base ingredients for Mink printer
are the same as those used in the makeup products found in the market.
