our vision is to distinguish uts as a world-leading university of technology. this includes preparing students to be leaders, innovators, and make real differences in the world, and we’re well on our way to achieving that goal.

> UTS offers students opportunities to engage with experts and access cutting edge facilities thanks to industry partnerships taking place right here on campus. For example, global provider of analytical instrumentation Agilent Technologies has based its Asia-Pacific demonstration site within our Science faculty, while the UTS-based Alcatel-Lucent University is providing a world-class training program and purpose-built laboratory for students who aspire to work with the most advanced telecommunication and network carriers.

> UTS is on track to have one of the most innovative, connected and cutting edge campuses in Australia, with a series of new buildings and major upgrades taking place between now and 2018 as part of our $1 billion City Campus Master Plan. The master plan is not just about new buildings: we’re creating a whole new university experience using sustainable design. Our aim is to create a ‘sticky campus’ where you will enjoy studying, learning, relaxing, socialising, and have opportunities to engage with industry and the local community.

your future camPus Over the next six years, UTS students will experience a range of new buildings and major upgrades as part of the City Campus Master Plan.

employers look for graduates with industry experience. with uts’s strong industry links and wide networks, we’ll help you develop your graduate skills and gain valuable experience as part of your degree. here are some of the ways uts students gain a real world education.

bringing industry to camPus The UTS Careers Service offers employer-run workshops, seminars, casual info sessions, career days, forums and networking events on a range of topics each semester. Industry professionals will let you know what they’re looking for in a graduate and share their own career experience.

Individual faculties and academics also organise industry visits to give you an insight into career paths and help you start building networks for future employment. For example, students in the Bachelor of Accounting take part in UTS Business School’s Guest Lecture Series where a wide range of industry sponsors run talks about accountants’ roles in different organisations. Similarly, the Sydney Women in Engineering and IT (SWIEIT) Speakers Program and the Lucy Mentoring Program provide opportunities for female Engineering and Information Technology students to develop career and networking opportunities.

get connected at uts careers fairs They say it’s all about who you know – but how do you make those valuable contacts while you’re studying? Each year all the big names descend on UTS for our Careers Fair, allowing you to network with leading employers and discover how you can secure the role of your dreams. Deloitte, PricewaterhouseCoopers, Ernst and Young, ANZ, Macquarie Bank, RailCorp, Engineers Without Borders Australia, Optus, teach.nsw and St Vincent’s Private Hospital are just some of the many organisations that take part.

UTS students can also attend the Vacation, Internship and Volunteer Fair. Run annually, the fair gives students the opportunity to talk to organisations about vacation programs, internships, work experience and volunteer opportunities in Australia and overseas. www.ssu.uts.edu.au/careers

get hands-on in the classroom Whatever course you choose, UTS will give you as many opportunities as possible to study real world problems. By basing assignments and coursework around case studies affecting communities and industry rather than generic textbook cases, we give you the chance to engage with innovative and relevant material while developing your practical skills.

“in our marketing strategy class, we worked on a case study for afghanistan’s first skateboarding school, skateistan. the challenge was to provide recommendations on how they could best improve their current business model with only limited resources. working with an existing non-governmental organisation that really required assistance made the subject feel more worthwhile.” suzie hollott, bachelor of business

develoP your leadershiP Potential The Beyond UTS International Leadership Development (BUiLD) program is the university’s flagship leadership program, providing over 1300 students from all study areas with the opportunity to develop, connect and engage. BUiLD seeks to promote concepts of social justice, equality, sustainability and the power to make positive change.

The program gives you the opportunity to participate in a range of local and international activities, including career development workshops, global community projects, overseas study, internships and volunteer projects. www.ssu.uts.edu.au/beyonduts

Students can also take part in the Brennan Justice and Leadership Program. The program offers UTS: Law students the opportunity to join discussion groups, and attend events and lectures addressing varied aspects of the justice system. www.law.uts.edu.au/students/brennan.html

“i’ve attended a number of free seminars and networking events through the build program and have been inspired by the high profile speakers, in particular, director of the global Poverty Project hugh evans and cambodian author and human rights advocate somaly mam. build has provided me with the chance to network with amazing people.”

industry-run comPetitions Part of a real world education is evaluating how you measure up against your peers; the very people you’ll be competing with to secure the best graduate positions. UTS students are given the chance to compete in industry-run competitions and develop solutions to real business problems. Participating in these competitions is also an opportunity to impress future employers.

For example, each year, UTS: Law students compete in the Willem C Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot in Vienna. In 2010, the UTS team placed third out of 252 universities, with all four team members named Best Oralist. All of these students now work for prominent employers: in the Federal Attorney General’s Office, as an Associate to a Federal Court judge, and in two top-tier law firms.

get involved with local community Why not use the skills and knowledge you learn in the classroom to help make a difference? UTS is actively involved with many not-for-profit organisations and community projects, giving you the chance to develop valuable networking skills with industry while contributing in a meaningful way to community development.

UTS Shopfront offers students the chance to undertake community projects for course credit in most degrees, while the So(U)L program – Social Leaders @ UTS – offers leadership training, seminars, lectures and discussion groups on key themes of social entrepreneurship, active citizenship and the not-for-profit sector. www.shopfront.uts.edu.au www.ssu.uts.edu.au/soul

make international studies Part of your degree Each year over 250 UTS students spend a year overseas studying in another language at a UTS partner university in one of more than 10 countries. And all while earning credit towards their UTS: International Studies degree. A Bachelor of Arts in International Studies builds your language and culture skills and can be combined with most other undergraduate degrees as part of a five year or six year combined degree program.

UTS also offers the Bachelor of Global Studies, a stand-alone degree that encourages you to develop different perspectives to engage with complex problem-solving around global issues.

for more information see page 44 or visit www.internationalstudies.uts.edu.au

learn a language Learning a language at UTS builds your ability to speak and read that language. It also gives you insights into a particular culture and society. Enrol in one of UTS’s language and culture programs in Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese or Spanish, and increase your international and intercultural skills.

www.internationalstudies.uts.edu.au/language

take an overseas Practicum Some UTS courses, such as the Bachelor of Education in Primary Education and the Bachelor of Global Studies, or subjects such as Construction in Developing Communities, allow you to take part in an overseas practicum as part of a particular study program. Overseas pracs allow you to apply the skills you’ve learnt at UTS, gaining practical experience, in a global setting while you earn course credit.

Join the hundreds of uts students who study overseas each year as part of their degree. study one of seven languages offered at uts or choose one of our many other global options. adding an international aspect to your degree can open the door to better career opportunities, broaden your way of thinking and, of course, add an element of adventure.

go on global exchange If you want to combine travel with your degree, but aren’t necessarily looking to study language and culture as part of your course, consider global exhange. UTS offers students in most degrees the chance to study one or two semesters overseas at one of more than 150 UTS partner institutions through global exchange. As a UTS global exchange student, you can study in one of 34 countries across Europe, the Americas, Asia and the Pacifi c.

The subjects you take on global exchange count towards your UTS degree, so it won’t take any extra time to complete your studies. And language isn’t an issue. Many of UTS’s partner universities are in English-speaking countries, and others offer subjects in English as well as the host language.

www.ssu.uts.edu.au/globalexchange

Join the build Program If you’re not looking to study overseas, but you’d like to tackle some other kind of international experience, you could expand your networks, gain leadership experience and strengthen your resume by participating in the UTS BUiLD program.

Last year 1200 UTS students took part in short-term programs, internships, volunteering and community work, leadership and Model United Nations conferences and leadership development programs through BUiLD.

www.ssu.uts.edu.au/beyonduts

check out our student clubs Many of UTS’s student clubs have an international fl avour. For example, by joining the AIESEC club, you could be involved in international extracurricular opportunities ranging from six weeks to 18 months, in over 110 countries. They also offer internships.

gue hi there ProsPective student,I’m James and I’ve been studying at UTS for three years now, and except for the exams, I’ve really enjoyed the entire experience that comes with uni life. In between attending class and editing the university magazine, Vertigo, I’ve had plenty of opportunity to unwind and express myself on campus.

On first impression, the hulking monolithic eyesore that is the UTS Tower may lead you to assume that campus life is similarly dull and brown coloured, but don’t be fooled. A wander around the campus will unearth a wealth of new opportunities; societies and collectives are always running stalls or meetings for new students.

As well as activities on campus, the uni’s central location makes it easy to get to from practically anywhere in Sydney. It also places UTS squarely in the middle of a dynamic and bustling city. When you’re not in a lecture or studying for an exam, there's always something on or near to the campus to keep you and your newest friends entertained.

so, i’m sure you’re asking, what’s actually on offer?

James Bourne, Editor of Vertigo, UTS student magazine

clubs and societies One of the highlights of uni is meeting new people who share your interests. Keen to meet fellow students and have fun at the same time? UTS has over 100 clubs and societies on campus, catering to just about anything you can think of – from photography to politics, anime to AFL, law to lawn bowls, and gaming to gridiron – there’s a group of students passionate about the beliefs and activities they love.

eating and drinking UTS has several cafes, fast food outlets, coffee shops and bars operated by the university for students. Need a coffee between classes? Just head down the corridor and grab one from a cafe. Feel like a kebab or some sushi for lunch? Look no further than the UTS food court. Dying of thirst after a lecture? Head to one of the university’s two bars – the Glasshouse or the Loft.

The Students' Association even run the Bluebird Brekkie Bar – a free weekly breakfast for all students with an appetite.

the sPorting life Recent building projects have seen UTS gain several sporting venues that you wouldn’t guess existed, based purely on the size of the campus. Not only does the university have a state-of-the-art gymnasium, it now boasts indoor sporting facilities.

The Union Sports Office and various UTS sports teams also organise and enter sides into regular competitions with other universities. Be sure to get involved in the Australian University Games and Eastern University Games – a great chance to travel, meet new people from across the country and have a ball playing the sports you love!

read, write, listen If you’re a creative type looking to express your thoughts, UTS has some unique outlets for you to make yourself seen and heard.

The UTS student magazine, Vertigo, takes all of its content from the submissions of students – including essays, features, satire, poetry and cartoons.

UTS also has close links with 2SER, a youth radio station located on campus and broadcasting across Sydney. If you have a great idea for a show or segment, the station’s always looking for volunteers.

If you enjoy music, check out The Loft for a host of live acts playing throughout the week.

big city life While UTS has everything you need to keep you entertained, there are also plenty of venues located close to the campus. Local restaurants serve up every cuisine imaginable (at student rates!), while local haunts, such as The Clare and The Abercrombie, are popular options at the end of a long (or not so long) day of classes. Wander past Central Station into Surry Hills, or down Broadway and into Glebe – both suburbs are abuzz with UTS students during semester, with plenty of live music, restaurants and cafes.

making a JoB of markeTing each year, uTs marketing students are given a real world case study to work on throughout the semester. This case study forms the credit for the customer Behaviour subject and the completed assignment is also entered in the annual microsoft protégé competition, allowing students to compete with other undergraduates australia-wide for the chance to win a week of mentoring with a microsoft executive, a laptop, phone and other prizes.

“This year, we were given the task of creating a marketing campaign to promote the new and relatively unknown Microsoft Windows 7 phone to the tertiary student demographic.

“I found it to be such a well-rounded experience and I think the competition really taught me how to think from a marketing perspective. It taught me what firms were looking for in terms of a marketing strategy, what they expect of their marketing team and the best way to meet these expectations. I now understand the time it takes to build a campaign, the amount of effort required and the techniques that are used to develop one. It is also a great way to network with industry. Microsoft has approached all participants of the Protégé competition with promotional job offers.”

Accounting is a great major to study because it’s applicable in all areas of business and allows you to keep your options open.

my advice to anyone considering a career in business is to make the most of the many opportunities available for business graduates. It’s important to find something that excites you and drives you. Be open to new ideas and innovative thinking.

in my role as a Category Insight Analyst for Woolworths Limited, I work with a team to find the cause of product performance or non-performance – meaning we research reasons behind why products are, or are not, selling. STUdeNT fiNALiSTS iN NATioNWide AdveRTiSiNg CoMpeTiTioN in November 2011, a group of five UTS advertising students competed in the finals of the international Advertising Association big idea Competition (iAA big idea). open to university students across Australia, the competition pitted 12 teams against each other to design the most effective advertising campaign for a chosen Australian charity or non-governmental organisation (Ngo). The top teams were then invited to pitch their campaigns in person to the organisation.

“The competition required us to develop a strategy to raise the profile and increase membership numbers for Coeliac Australia, an Australian NGO. In the final of the competition we had to pitch our strategy to a team of judges, including the company CEO.

“From this experience I’ve learnt so much about the finer details of the advertising process. Being able to put everything I had learnt in the classroom to use – combined with a very tight deadline and small budget – allowed me to see just how much work goes into a campaign from start to finish. The entire process was a huge challenge. We put in a lot of late nights to get things completed to a high standard, but that’s what made it so rewarding in the end. Overall it gave me a better idea of what it’ll be like to work in the advertising industry.”

CAReeR SNApSHoT JoURNALiST i completed the Bachelor of Arts in Communication (Journalism) degree. During my last year of study I worked as a news editor for The City News. I also completed internships with The Australian, The Sydney Morning Herald, AAP and Reuters in Jakarta. I co-hosted a radio show at Radio 2RDJ and freelanced as a music reporter.

A typical career path for someone with my qualifications would be to work in any field of journalism, for example television, radio or newspaper. But being an effective and concise communicator is a skill set that stands strong in almost any career. The UTS journalism course equips you to move into reporting, producing, publishing, editing, investigative journalism, broadcasting or online media.

My advice to anyone considering journalism as a career is that it requires equal measures of curiosity, tenacity and force of character. Journalism is an inspiring career choice that is rarely dull and it gives you an insight into the lives of others.

in my role as a journalist for The Herald Sun, I work in a multimedia environment. I can be filing stories for the paper, covering breaking news for the website and shooting videos. STUdio eXpeRieNCe iN pARiS in 2011, eleven UTS students travelled to paris to take part in an intensive two-week sustainability studio aimed at providing them with the opportunity to examine and understand architecture in situations that are culturally, financially and logistically different to the Australian context. The workshop was part of the global field Studio (gfS) elective offered to architecture students. This elective introduces and discusses architecture in a global context.

“GFS offered a great opportunity to study overseas and complete a design studio located opposite the Eiffel Tower. To experience a completely different working environment to that in Sydney was definitely a major plus. Through the studio we were able to meet students and lecturers from a Bangkok university and a French university in Versailles. They were working on a proposal similar to ours, and we compared works and approaches. We were also critiqued by a major French architect, Yona Friedman.

“The workshop helped me gain a better understanding of what sustainability means in an urban context as well to what lengths we need to go in order to make cities a sustainable environment. The experience has given my portfolio a unique aspect which has been highly commended by colleagues and architectural firms.”

pRiMARY edUCATioN pRofeSSioNAL eXpeRieNCe Students who complete the bachelor of education in primary education degree at UTS are required to complete 97 days of professional experience with schools or organisations during their degree. That means every semester of their degree, students gain first-hand practical experience in classroom observation, preparing lessons and teaching the classes.

“I completed my first two placements with a year 6 class. The time that I spent with the students and the cooperating teachers allowed me to form a close relationship with them that I felt was really beneficial when teaching. The diverse practicum placements have given me constructive and positive learning experiences that have allowed me to develop my classroom management techniques, lesson planning and communication skills in the classroom environment.

“I’ve learnt that with teaching, you never stop learning. Teaching goes far beyond the classroom; it can involve anything from assisting students in the playground to organising excursions. I was also able to work outside the traditional classroom environment by observing language, IT and special reading classes that showed me how students behaved with different teachers and the benefits of other teaching styles.

“My practicum experience has heightened my passion for teaching and reinforced that I have made the best career choice that suits me.”

TeACH oveRSeAS AS pART of YoUR degRee every year, UTS primary education students have the opportunity to travel overseas and gain practical experience teaching in different cultures. This two-week practicum enables students to engage with a different curriculum, often teaching students who may not speak fluent english. To date, trips have been organised to Thailand, Samoa and China.

“I was part of a group of 20 UTS students who completed an overseas placement in Samoa. For two weeks I was given full responsibility for an equivalent Year 6 class, where I learned the Samoan curriculum and taught English, Science, History, Geography and Sport.

“The experience opened my eyes to the difference in education settings and opportunities between first world and developing countries. Education has the opportunity to empower people and communities to gain knowledge that can change their lives. Immersing myself in diverse cultural, social and educational experiences gave me invaluable knowledge and different teaching and learning opportunities. CAReeR SNApSHoT pRiMARY SCHooL TeACHeRi completed my Bachelor of Education in Primary Education degree in 2010.

A typical career path for someone with my qualifications would be to work as a primary school teacher. From this position, there are opportunities for promotion to assistant principal or principal. You could also work in other areas of primary education including curriculum development.

My advice to anyone considering teaching as a profession is to get started. Teaching is an extremely rewarding profession as every day you are doing something positive for the students in your class.

in my role as a primary school teacher at Dural Public School, I work as a classroom teacher, mediator and I take on an almost endless list of other roles. My favourite classroom activities involve practical maths games, spelling, aerobics, sport and science experiments. It is really important to be creative with what you’re doing, the most boring topics can still be fun with some imagination. I really enjoy the interaction with my colleagues and the children. Being able to watch your students grow, develop and improve in their abilities throughout the year is really rewarding.

A typical career path for someone with my qualifications is working as a nurse in the community or in general practice. The degree also allows you to go into other areas of health like sales for pharmaceutical companies, health coaching and, after further study and experience, management and health project coordination.

My advice to anyone who is interested in nursing would be – go for it! Nursing is a challenging job where you’re constantly problem-solving, thinking on your feet and making a difference in somebody else’s life.

in my role as a registered nurse at the Prince of Wales Hospital in Sydney, I specialise in urology, vascular and gastrointestinal surgeries. As a nurse I do a lot more than give out medicine and bedpans. I make sure patients don’t suffer any adverse reaction to medication and that it’s sufficient to manage their pain. Nurses monitor post-operative patients for complications and help them with daily activities. If the patient gets really sick, we are on the frontline to pick up the cues. We collaborate with the medical team to provide patients with the best care. The best part of my job is, at the end of the day, knowing I’ve made a difference.

CAReeR SNApSHoT SeNioR TeCHNiCAL bUSiNeSS ANALYST i completed my Bachelor of Science in IT, Diploma in IT Professional Practice degree in 2005 and have since been working as a Business Analyst both in Australia and overseas.

A typical career for someone with my qualifications could include working as a developer, consultant, project manager, solution delivery manager, business analyst, test engineer or systems architect. The great thing about a degree in IT is that the skill-set is transferable to just about any industry like finance, insurance or even film production.

in my role as Senior Business Analyst (BA) for the Commonwealth Bank of Australia, my primary job is to analyse and define what our clients need the system to do for them and how the existing system architecture can be built upon to achieve this. When a solution is agreed upon, I then ensure that developers and testers understand the requirements. BA’s need to understand the problem space and requirements intimately, so being detail oriented helps.

My advice to a student is if you enjoy working with computers, problem-solving, and interacting with people, then consider a career in IT and business analysis. It opens up great opportunities to work both in Australia and around the world.

Students can combine International Studies with almost any undergraduate program at UTS. The course adds an international dimension, enabling students to study a professional area – such as Business or Law – while at the same time learning a chosen language and culture.

Career options are determined by the professional component of the degree. With a degree in International Studies, students gain qualifications in language, intercultural and international awareness, and a country speciality. This added dimension makes students more marketable to prospective employers globally within their chosen discipline.

FT = Full time / PT = Part time* The Bachelor of Arts in International Studies cannot be undertaken alone but must be combined with another UTS undergraduate degree.

gAiN A gLobAL peRSpeCTive i chose Global Studies because I have a passion for culture, travelling and learning languages. I thought that Global Studies would enable me to indulge my passions and also give me the opportunity to make a difference. I felt my interests could be broadened through this degree without forcing me into a career path I didn’t want to pursue.

global Studies is broken down into three components; core global studies subjects, major subjects and minor language electives. The diversity of my subjects meant I could study global politics, international law and French all in one semester.

The best part of my degree was the choice of majors. I’ve pursued legal studies, which has ultimately directed me to future career paths. The degree also allowed me to study French and German, languages in which I am now fluent. The degree even gives you the option to study overseas as part of an exchange.

When you graduate there are a myriad of possibilities – you can work with non-govermental organisations or advocacy groups – but where you take this degree depends on your majors. If like me, you choose legal studies, then you could work as a paralegal, law clerk or policy researcher. Communications could lead you to a job in public relations, advertising or social research. Now I have graduated, I plan to continue my work at the Red Cross NSW International Humanitarian Law Office.

i’m currently completing my in-country study year in Chile. So far I’ve travelled extensively through this magnificent country, from the northern deserts of San Pedro de Atacama, to the southern glacial regions of Patagonia. I’ve also visited Bolivia, Peru, Argentina, and Uruguay, and have plans to explore Ecuador, the Galapagos Islands, and Colombia.

My favourite part of this degree is engaging in a new culture as a local. I’ve seen incredible places, had unforgettable experiences, and most importantly, become part of an international family that has taught me about tolerance and cultural differences, and about the remarkable uniform base of human understanding.

i intend to enter the field of International Law. My ICS experience has given me a cultural understanding, new language skills, international connections, global outlook – which will greatly assist me in my chosen career.

bReNdAN WoNg bachelor of Arts in Communication (Journalism) / bachelor of Arts in international Studies

i chose Japan as my country major because I wanted to go to a country that was different from Australia. Japan offered a rich and exciting culture, which appealed to me.

My favourite part of my experience was participating in a home-stay and tour of Hiroshima. The program allowed me to gain a better understanding and awareness of the events surrounding the dropping of the atomic bomb on Hiroshima and the importance of world peace.

My overseas experience has improved my problem-solving skills and ability to think on my feet and to take initiative. I am more open to trying new things and feel a greater confidence in dealing with cross-cultural situations.

The bachelor of Arts in international Studies includes an in-Country Study (iCS) component. Undertaken in fourth year of study, iCS means students spend two semesters living and studying in one of our partner locations – where they’ll attend classes at one of over 70 established university partners. The map on the opposite page shows the 13 countries currently offered for iCS.

“PLT subjects provide a realistic idea of what it will be like to practise law. Because I had always been interested in visual and performing arts, I applied to the Art Gallery of NSW for my practical placement and started working there as a paralegal to the in-house counsel. At the gallery, I have been exposed to a broad range of legal matters such as employment law, commercial contracts, wills, probate and trusts, insurance law and copyright and intellectual property. Also, my mentor is involved with the Commercial Law Association of Australia. Under her guidance I have also become a member and am currently part of their mentorship program.

deveLopiNg CApAbLe LeAdeRS 2011 was the inaugural year for an inspiring joint initiative from UTS: Law and the Law Students’ Society: the brennan Justice and Leadership program (bJLp). Named after Sir gerard brennan AC kbe, former Chief Justice of the High Court of Australia and UTS Chancellor, this program aims to strengthen the idealism, social consciousness and leadership abilities essential in first-class law graduates. The program offers UTS: Law students the opportunity to join discussion groups, and attend events and lectures addressing varied aspects of the justice system. Students also gain hands-on experience volunteering in a number of organisations including Anti-Slavery Australia and the NSW Law Society.

“BJLP gave me the chance to attend the Peace, Justice and International Criminal Court Seminar, where I gained a greater understanding of International Humanitarian Law. I was blown away by the quality of the speakers. What was especially interesting was the discussion of Peace versus Justice – can we have both justice and peace? The seminar was so relevant given the fact that all the unrest in the Middle East and north Africa was at its peak.

“Through this program, I have developed a much broader appreciation for justice in general. My views on the legal system have been shaped by my experiences with BJLP and I believe I’ll be a better and more rounded lawyer because of this.”

My main areas of focus include discrimination law, professional negligence, insurance and trade and consumer law. I undertake legal research, draft legal advice and agreements, train junior lawyers, paralegals and summer clerks, brief barristers and experts and keep up to date with developments in the law. I also regularly appear in federal, state, district and local courts. “While studying forensic science, one of my UTS lecturers helped me gain an internship with the mineral division of Australia Nuclear Science Technology Organisation (ANSTO). Following my application, I received an offer to complete a 12 month internship before my final year of uni.

“During my time at ANSTO, I was involved in designing systems and chemical processes to improve the efficiency of the mineral extraction process, therefore increasing production for mining companies and reducing the impact on the environment. I learned a lot about process development and chemical engineering, radiation safety and management, and the processing of ores that contain uranium and rare metals. Through my internship, I learnt a great deal about different types of science industries and how they operate. While I have always wanted to work in forensics, my internship experience has opened up interesting career prospects in other fields of science. in my role as a transplant scientist in the Cell and Molecular Therapy Laboratories at RPAH, I give patients who have haematological disorders stem cells that boost the white blood cell count and help them recover and fight infection. By choosing one of these courses, you will (in most cases) complete the same core subjects at INSEARCH as students in taking their first year at UTS. Better still, if you achieve the required GPA (Grade Point Average) for the corresponding degree at UTS, you’re guaranteed a place there.

The UTS foundation Studies course has been designed specifically to prepare students for undergraduate study in Australia by focusing on knowledge, skills and different approaches to learning. It’s a performance-based course, with modules in:

> Arts and Social Sciences> Business> Design and Architecture> Nursing and Health Sciences> Information Technology> Physical Sciences

The course is offered as an accelerated program – two semesters: eight months

Obviously, which one you choose is up to you. However, if you wish to enrol in the Accelerated Foundation Studies Program, you must be at least 17 years of age at the commencement of the course and have successfully completed Year 11 with superior grades.

Like most aspiring UTS students, you’re probably working harder now than you’ve ever done. If you get a place, all the late nights and weekends studying will of course be worth it. But equally, they don’t have to be wasted if you don’t quite get the grades you need – not if you’re smart about your options. That’s where UTS:INSEARCH comes in.

INSEARCH is a registered higher education provider to UTS. Their whole reason for being is to propel students into UTS and enable them to follow their dream.

They are the only pathway provider to offer UTS-accredited courses. You can choose from a wide range of programs including UTS Foundation Studies and diplomas. And, depending on which diploma you choose, some students can go straight into the second year of a UTS bachelor's degree, provided they get the required GPA.

There are a number of ways to qualify for entry into a UTS course. Read on to find out what factors are considered in your application and how you can give your application a boost.

CURReNT SCHooL LeAveRS If you're in Year 12 or attempting your HSC or equivalent in 2012, selection for most UTS undergraduate courses will be based entirely on your ATAR. As a guide; refer to 2012 ATAR cut-offs for each course listed at the back of this guide, but remember these figures vary from year to year.

You can also boost your ATAR through various entry schemes, including the UTS Year 12 Bonus Scheme. For more information see page 60.

> TAfe or private college diploma Complete an Australian Qualifications Framework Diploma at TAFE or a private college. A completed diploma is considered for entry to the majority of UTS bachelor degrees. This will help in your application to UTS, and you may also be eligible for subject exemptions. Selection to UTS will be dependent on you getting good marks in your diploma.

> Retake your HSC at TAfe TAFE offers you the opportunity to complete your HSC in one year.

> UTS:iNSeARCH INSEARCH academic pathway programs can facilitate entry to UTS. See page 56 for information on INSEARCH.

> Work experience Taking a year or two off to gain some industry experience could be a good option if you are unsure about what you want to study or did not get the ATAR you need to get into your preferred course straight from school. When you apply as a non-current school leaver, work experience can count towards your application for some UTS courses that consider personal statements. What happens if you don’t get the ATAR for the course you want? There are options.First, see if you’re eligible for any of the UTS Entry Schemes.

for information about these schemes see page 60.

Next, consider the following:

eNRoL iN A ReLATed UTS CoURSe Find a UTS course that is similar to the course you want but with a lower ATAR. You will then have the following options:

> Use your electives Many UTS courses include elective subjects. Electives allow you to take subjects that interest you, from almost any area of study.

> Transfer after a year The marks you earn in your first year at university will be considered, in addition to your ATAR, if you apply for your preferred course after completing six months to one year of university. Transferring is a competitive process, so getting good marks in your first year is essential if you want to use this option. Similarly, if you would like to study a combined degree and don’t receive the marks, you might consider commencing the single degree, and then applying to transfer into the combined degree at the end of your first year. For example, if you want to study the Business/International Studies combined degree but don’t get the required ATAR, it would be possible to start the Business degree and then apply to combine your degree after a year.

eNTRY pATHWAYS > Combine your degree

UTS offers many combined degrees where you have the option to study more than one area of interest. If you don’t meet the ATAR cut-off for your first preference, choose a combined course that has a lower ATAR cut-off requirement but enables you to study your primary area of interest while also studying another area. For example, if you’re interested in studying Business, but don’t achieve the ATAR cut-off, you could consider combining the Business degree with another area of interest, such as Science. The combined Business/Science degree requires a lower ATAR than the single Business degree so you may qualify for the combined option. In choosing this option you’ll graduate with two degrees, increasing your career options.

eNRoL iN ReLATed STUdY oR geT SoMe WoRk eXpeRieNCe Undertake some study or get some work experience to support your UTS application. There are a number of options:

> Another university course Enrol in a similar course at another university that requires a lower ATAR. Marks you earn during your first year of study will be considered, in addition to your ATAR, if you apply to transfer to your preferred UTS course.

Application to transfer from another university is highly competitive, so getting good marks in your first year is essential if you want to use this option.

UNi feeS All universities charge tuition fees depending on what course you're studying and the subjects you choose within that course.

LoCAL STUdeNTS Most local students will be studying in a Commonwealth supported place (CSP); where the Australian Government makes a contribution to the cost of your study while you pay a student contribution.

> Student contributions Student contributions are calculated per subject. Subjects are split into four bands; National Priority, Band 1, Band 2 and Band 3, each band varying in cost. See the table below as a guide to the cost of your student contribution.

> HeCS-HeLp Most domestic students pay their student contribution through the HECS-HELP scheme. This means the government loans you the money to pay your student contribution, which is paid directly to the university. You will start repaying your HECS-HELP loan when your income gets above a certain amount. For the 2011-2012 tax year, the repayment threshold is
