Just As We Are

"God does not love some ideal person, but rather human beings just as we are, not some

ideal world, but rather the real world."

— Dietrich Bonhoeffer, Meditations on the Cross

In November, the prophets speak – from God’s lips to our ears. We will hear the story of a

great military commander brought low not by a sword, but by a dread skin disease. Just as

he is, Naaman goes in search of God. We will hear from Micah, who speaks God’s words

into a divided kingdom, with a flailing government, a weak military, and desperate

attempts to appease God. Stop it, says God – I don’t need the trappings of religion. I need

you, just as you are, bringing justice, mercy, and kindness into the world. We will hear from

Isaiah, who brought God’s assurance to a frightened people surrounded by an enemy. Do

not be afraid, says God, I am with you.

The stories are complex and the prophetic words are powerful, but the messages are

direct. And they are for us - as fearful and uncertain as we are – about sickness and health,

wealth and poverty, violence and peace.

The stories are about God’s love for us, and God’s care for us, which are sometimes made

evident just when we have stopped looking for divine intervention.

Join us for worship – let this good news nourish you in mind and soul and strength.

You will see so much good news inside this edition of our Outlook newsletter. We had a

healthy conversation. In other news, we are launching a Parish Nursing Program. We have

hired excellent new staff people. We are initiating a Young Adult Ministry. We have terrific

lay leadership of our Annual Stewardship Campaign, and the promise of a Chuck Wagon

Celebration.

Rejoice and be glad!

3-Quarterly Conference Headline News - 10/19/2014

Thank you to all who participated in the 3rd Quarterly Conference of 2014!

After lunch, we received brief presentations from leaders of our 3 all-church

objectives, and then we broke out into groups to review draft proposals for

each. When we re-gathered as the full group, we shared our ideas and identi-

fied areas of consensus. The meeting ended in spontaneous applause, a good

sign of Holy Spirit presence and guidance! Here are the highlights:

DREAM Church Partnership – Next Steps Approved for Growing Korean

Ministry

Pastor Brandon and Joe Lee shared the growing community’s vision statement,

which emphasizes: loving community and passionate worship; inviting the

young generation; growing as faithful disciples of Jesus Christ; healing relation-

ships in Christ; and transforming the world with God’s Dream.

The Korean small group currently has a) a full salary package for Pastor Bran-

don, raised by the DREAM church through 2016; b) prayer support from two

DREAM church covenant groups, and c) twenty members meeting regularly at

11:00 on Sunday mornings.

For the next phase, the suggestion offered by UUMC and received by Pastor

Brandon will result in a new Sunday morning schedule. A Korean-language

United Methodist worship will begin in Fellowship Hall concurrent with the

English-language traditional service in the Sanctuary at 9:30 a.m. Children’s

ministries will be shared. We will evaluate this arrangement in one year. All

teams will begin to assess necessary adjustments and synergies.

People are excited about this, and Pastor Brandon’s team experienced the

meeting as a great blessing!

Rooted 3.0 Young Adult/Campus Outreach

John Young and Will Faure presented this proposal from the group that shares

a passion for this renewed, refocused ministry.

Participants unanimously committed $10,000 from the Kase New Ministry Fund

($33,000 was previously approved by the congregation for these types of pro-

grams), and considered seriously the commitment of many individuals within

the church to mentor young people.

...continued

Alvia Gilbert will shift his job responsibilities from youth ministry to Young

Adult Ministries on November 1, and will reduce his hours at UUMC to

quarter-time.

In April, we will evaluate progress, review the goals of the Rooted 3.0 ef-

fort, and plan next steps.

UUMC as a Center for Faith-Based Education and the Arts

Participants had a number of suggestions to assist Tiffany Vantine with the

success of a beginning effort that starts with a preschool-based program.

Participants also further brainstormed how UUMC could grow its brand

identity as a church that cares about music.

Kitchen Remodel Plans Complete

Trustee Mitzi Holmes shared that plans for the kitchen remodel are com-

plete and ready for implementation. We are looking toward a $40,000

fundraising effort in early 2015.

Budget Report

Finance Chair Kyle Vaught shared

1) Lunch and Opening Prayer

A packet was provided to all participants. It is referenced throughout the

minutes.

2) Approval of Q2 Minutes from June 22, 2014 – Brad Fowler, Vision &

Strategy Chair.

Approval moved, seconded, unanimously approved.

3) Budget Finance Report - presented by Kyle Vaught. Kyle noted that

income is short 10.4K (which is not atypical following the summer period),

and that we are behind on payment of our budgeted apportionments (a

tithe of our projected income). If Apportionments were paid as budgeted,

expenses would be over income by $28K.

4) Stewardship Campaign: Lee Holmes shared plans for the Stewardship

Campaign: “First: Putting God First in our Living & Giving.” It will kick off

on October 26, and conclude with a Chuck Wagon Cookout on Sunday,

November 16. The Chuck Wagon Cookout will be held in lieu of our tradi-

tional Turkey Luncheon this year while the kitchen needs repair.

Thank you again to everyone who participated!

Our 2015 Season of Giving

We should be able to tell our friends that our church talks about

money all the time. We want to be able to say that all this money talk

isn’t boring or guilt-inducing, but a blessing. Money talk frees us to

talk about our priorities; provide for our families; plan for future gen-

erations; and give generously. Money talk frees us to ask for advice; to

share resources; and to envision ministries that we could never do

alone. Money talk helps us to build up riches that neither moth nor

rust can destroy, amen?!

Stewardship Chair Lee Holmes opened the Season of Giving with a

testimony in worship. During the month of November, you’ll be asked

to consider your pledge for 2015. We have been praying for the minis-

tries of our church throughout October’s Season of Prayer, and we

were blessed and uplifted by a forward-looking 3rd Quarterly Confer-

ence (details on page 6.)

The next two Sundays we’ll have two special speakers and then on

Nov 16th we’ll have a western Chuck Wagon event to Celebrate our

collective success and our strong commitment to the future of our

church. You won’t want to miss the authentic western meal, singing,

storytelling, and roping (includes lessons for the kids). So bring your

pledge cards, come hungry and be prepared to “get your cowboy on”.

Belong ...Ministries that nurture a sense of belonging to GOD and to this faith community

Your Excellent Staff Team

November 1st marks some UUMC staff team changes. We

have been blessed with smooth transitions. We trust that God

has good work for us to do together!

* Wan-Chin Chang moves from interim accompanist to per-

manent music staff member, preparing accompaniment and

special music for our worship and our choir events.

* Lauren Wong takes over the Director of Youth Ministry po-

sition from Alvia Gilbert. Lauren will work 20 hours/week con-

necting with our youth and their friends (6th

-12th

grades).

* Alvia Gilbert moves over to the newly re-created Director of

Young Adult Ministries. He will work 10 hours/week connect-

ing with our young adults and their friends (college age and

up); re-establishing a presence at IVC and UCI, and inviting

UUMC members into mentoring relationships.

* Steven Don will fill in for Jerry Colunga as Sunday morning

custodian while Jerry waits for his heart transplant.

Please be sure to welcome – and treasure – each staff person.

This talented group has choices when it comes to employ-

ment. We are grateful that they are serving here at UUMC.

Multicultural Thanksgiving Celebration –

Sunday, November 23

Come, Give Thanks, and Welcome New Members!

You are invited to a multicultural Thanksgiving Celebration.

Rev. Ito and our friends from the Japanese-language Nozomi

congregation will join us for 9:30 a.m. worship, along with Pas-

tor Brandon and his growing Korean small group. Lay Leader

George Kawamura will honor us with a solo, and 10 Nozomi

friends will officially join UUMC. When Nozomi UMC closed as

an official congregation in 1996, some members continued to

meet as the Nozomi Mission congregation, hosted at UUMC.

George recently shared with Pastor Paige that memberships

were not transferred at that time.

It is a blessing to find out that our Nozomi friends desire to be

official members of UUMC, and will come into membership on

the 23rd

. Rev. Ito has completed their new membership class in

Japanese.

The Family Ministry team will welcome our new members with

a tea after worship.

! Welcome.

Are you interested in membership?

Please let Pastor Paige know if you’ll be ready to join UUMC

as a member at our multicultural Thanksgiving celebration.

Women’s Mini-Retreat Invite…

A Dose of Tea & Thankfulness

Saturday, Nov. 8, 3-5:00pm in Fellowship Hall

It’s a time of sisterly fellowship and chance to get

to know women in our church we haven’t met.

Sign-up details will be given via flyer & Evite.

SISTERS

The women of Sisters Book Group will finish their 20th year on

Nov. 25 with a discussion of the book During the Reign of the

Queen of Persia by Joan Chase. “The Queen of Persia is not an

exotic figure, but a fierce Ohio farmwife who presides over a

household of daughters and granddaughters. The novel tells

their stories through the eyes of the youngest members of the

family, four cousins, who spend summers on the farm, for them

both a life giving Eden and the source of terrible discoveries

about desire and loss.”

We’ll be meeting at the home of Anne Teunis at 7:30 pm. All

women of the church are welcome. We will not be meeting

in December, but here is what we’re reading next:

HEALTH MINISTRY TEAM IS FORMING AT UUMC

by Kathleen B. Hartman

Pastor Paige and Sharon McCart got the ball rolling for

UUMC when they attended the Hoag Health Ministries

Faith Community Nursing Information Program. They

shared their information with UUMC members who are

nurses and Bonnie Wright, Linda Mirshafiee and Patti Hart-

ley responded by offering to assist in setting up a Health

Ministry Team at UUMC.

The first UUMC team meeting was with the Hoag Health

Ministries manager and 8 UUMC members. It was an infor-

mational session where we learned about the resources

and support that Hoag Health Ministries provides to church

communities. The UUMC Health Ministry team will be

meeting monthly and attending workshops. The team is

ready to lean in and move forward on this important new

ministry for UUMC. ….More to follow!

Local Families

Celebrate The

Holidays!

Fall is here and the holiday season is just around the corner!

The holidays are both fun and stressful for most of us, but they

are especially difficult for the families we serve. The flood of

decorations, advertisements, and expectations light up chil-

dren's smiles but also forces struggling parents to face the

gnawing fear of disappointing them. To help alleviate this bur-

den, Families Forward offers holiday programs to families in

need, bringing hope and cheer to their homes during the holi-

day season.

THANKSGIVING Families Forward's Thanksgiving Program

provides families with baskets filled with the ingredients they

need to prepare a traditional Thanksgiving meal.

Sign up to help a family this Thanksgiving. Options include or-

ganizing a food drive, donating Thanksgiving food items, do-

nating gift certificates for families to buy a turkey or fresh pro-

duce, or making a monetary gift to support this program.

ADOPT-A-FAMILY Each December, generous donors help to

make the holidays a little brighter for local families in need by

donating gifts as well as gas and grocery cards. Participate in

our Adopt-A-Family Program. Options include adopting a fam-

ily for the holidays, donating gift certificates to support families

during the holidays and throughout the year, or making a

monetary gift to support this program. We also accept general

toy donations to fill additional gift bags for children.

Hold the Christmas Shopping!!

The Heifer Alternative Gift opportunity will be coming

at the end of November. So reduce the stress of shop-

ping and donate in the name of someone an animal, a

flock of chicks, ducks or geese, a trio of rabbits, a hive

of bees, and many more to Heifer International. These

gifts provide the means for a family the dignity of

feeding themselves, the means to pay for clothing, an

education, doctor’s visits, shelter, and ultimately, the

ability to pass on the gift to another family.

Be Love ...Ministries that send us out to serve in Irvine, Orange County, and to the ends of the earth

November is National Alzheimer’s Awareness Month

by Lynda Everman

Alzheimer’s affects over five million Americans and their

families (1 out of 3 families!), and 44 million people world-

wide. It is the 3rd leading cause of death in the US and the

only one among the top ten for which there is no known

prevention, treatment, or cure.

I’ve had the privilege this year to help launch Clergy

Against Alzheimer’s, a new national network of clergy, laity,

and faith organizations working to focus our nation’s at-

tention on Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias. Our

network is diverse in terms of faith traditions, age, experi-

ence, geographical, ethnic and cultural distinctions. But we

share the common goals of providing support for those

with dementia, their family, friends, and care partners as we

work together to STOP Alzheimer’s by 2020.

We will soon be releasing a first of its kind book of medita-

tions, Seasons of Caring: Meditations for Alzheimer's and

Dementia Caregivers. Over seventy authors representing a

variety of faith traditions, including our very own Pastor

Paige, have drawn upon their years of experience to offer

words of hope, encouragement and understanding to

those who are now on this journey.

I invite those of you who are interested to visit our web-

site, http://www.usagainstalzheimers.org/networks/clergy,

where you will find a full description of our mission and

purpose statements, as well as essays, sermons, books,

programs, suggestions for action, and other resources for

use by faith communities.

While you're there, please join us! Let’s do together what

we cannot do on our own; let’s be part of those who

stopped Alzheimer's!

Vision & Strategy

Vision & Strategy Team Update by Brad Fowler

Thank you for your attendance. Please calendar our next proposed

meeting date of Monday, Nov 17, 7:30.

General Items: Bonnie and Jin were unable to attend. Pastor Paige

will reach out to several members to take over for Cathy Boragno

for the Believe Liaison position. Pastor Brandon attended and was

invited to meet with V&S on a regular basis.

Next Quarterly Charge Conference tentatively set for January

25 after church: At that meeting we will review the budget and will

ask for each Liaison to present their action tasks and schedule from

the past year as well as progress on new action tasks in support of

the four major goals and three major long term objectives. Save all

the action items you currently have and report out on the comple-

tion of them as well as generate new support tasks as appropriate

please. So, action for our Liaisons is to brush off the goals and ob-

jectives list, update progress on your action items, and meet with

your committees to develop new action tasks that you can do to

forward the three all church long range objectives that were ap-

proved/discussed at the quarterly conference. So what can your

committees do to forward 1) “Working in partnership with the

DREAM Church to develop a Korean outreach ministry”, 2)” Pilot

programming that expands our faith based education through mu-

sic and the arts” and 3) “Create a new worshiping community for

young adults and/or young families” (Rooted 3.0), if anything.

Staff Departure/Retention: As approved at the Quarterly Confer-

ence, Alvia will be retained as the Young Adult/Campus Ministries

Director noted in Church on Sunday ($12k a year for 10 hours a

week.) Alvia is still taking a new part time position in Long Beach. A

recent grant of $2,500 from the Conference as well as the $10,000

Kase bequest enables us to launch this ministry. We will be asking

for $7000 in the general budget as well. Lauren Wong will be the

Director of Youth Ministries starting November 1 for 20 hours/week

@ $20,000 per year. Dr. Wan-Chin Chang has been hired as the new

accompanist at $18,177/year.

Stewardship Campaign: The Stewardship Committee has indicated

their ‘Season of Prayer’ began 1 October, with the Stewardship

Campaign initiating at the end of October and concluding on Sun-

day November 16. In part because our kitchen is now in such bad

shape, they will have a hosted Chuck wagon event in lieu of our

Thanksgiving turkey event for this year.

Dream Church Initiative: Review of the input form the Quarterly

Conference was discussed. Pastor Brandon advised that use of Wil-

liams Hall for their service on Sundays at 9:30 while the membership

is growing is understood. They have 20 members now, including

children and will tentatively begin the 9:30 service on November

30. It was acknowledged that this will require some work arounds

and planning for things like choir practice location change and co-

ordination for after church luncheons /conferences but that can be

accomplished. Review of this this arrangement will be conducted in

about a year. Pastor Brandon said that the Presbyterian congrega-

tion has been approached, but does not want to join his group. (I'm

not sure that this is a done deal yet)

Operations

September Financials

,,,Continued

2015 Budget process: As discussed, the process is planned to be

the same as last year where Vision and Strategy Liaisons will obtain

input from their committees and submit a proposed program

budget to the Finance committee for their review. Action for Liai-

sons is to submit budget input to Brad by November 7th. Brad will

collate it all and have it ready for discussion by V&S at the Novem-

ber 17th meeting. Input will be provided to Finance for discussion

in formulating a 2015 budget in time for the January Charge Con-

ference.

Belong/Believe/Worship: No report

Operations: Bob indicated that the Trustees he and Sue Harris

have been working with the Red Cross on emergency preparation

planning and an emergency shelter agreement that would utilize

Fellowship Hall and the restrooms in Williams Hall.. Bob and Trus-

tees have also been working on a Cal Pac Disaster Response Plan,

and an Emergency Preparedness Plan for UUMC. Trustees will also

be moving ahead on working with Lowes to purchase kitchen reha-

bilitation materials as was discussed at the Quarterly Confer-

ence. Wall demolition on Stewart hall will be done around Thanks-

giving break.

as the Heifer Alternative gift program for Christmas.
