Okay, just do it!

plaques and/or to drop off “Thank You” cards.

We wish to thank all the 4-H Uvalde Club Managers for their time. Also, to all the vol-unteers, parents, grandparents and anyone who assisted this 2015 – 2016 year, thank you.

During the 2015 – 2016 year, we had: 206 Youth registered members 71 Adult registered members 10 Clubs – including the Adult Organization

We had some rough roads (breaking in a new administrative assistant and losing an ag agent).

Now is the time to let us know how we can make next year more efficient. Only with your input do we know what is working or not working.

Beginner Shooting Sports Camps are designed to introduce mem-bers to the 4-H Shooting Sports projects in a safe, positive environment. For more information, go to our website at tex-as4hcenter.tamu.edu. You can hold your spot at camp today by regis-tering with a $25 deposit. Spots are going very quickly, so encourage your members to sign up ASAP! Please don’t hesitate to ask if you have any questions! Jenny Wilder Program Coordinator, Texas 4-H Center 5600 FM 3021, Brownwood, TX [email protected]

If you have any pictures on any 4-H activities, please send them to Suzanne. She is keeping a file on her computer so Cheryl Sanchez can get started working on a video for Achieve-ment Night. This can be any 4-H activity: in contest, working on a project, in a meeting, a workshop, a clip from the news media on a 4- H’er, etc.

Please let her know the event in which the pic-ture was taken or any other specifics of the picture.

You can email Suzanne the pictures at:

Eli’s Fund

A Memorial for Lance Corporal Colton Rusk and Eli, his service dog.

Eli, a bomb-sniffing military working dog was as-signed to US Lance Cpl. Colton Rusk. In Decem-ber, 2010, Lance Cpl. Rusk was killed by sniper fire in Afghanistan. Eli, ever faithful to his handler was left depressed and alone. He would not leave Lance Cpl. Rusk’s cot at the base for several weeks. In February 2011 Lance Cpl. Rusk’s fami-ly in South Texas was allowed to adopt Eli. The Texas Veterinary Medical Foundation (College of Veterinary Medicine, CVM) has pledged to cover all of Eli’s veterinary care for the rest of his life. The CVM established Eli’s Fund as a source of financial support for active duty service men and women, medically retired veterans’ service ani-mals and retired military animals.

• From November 2015 through Texas 4-H Roundup in June 2016, Texas 4-H Council challenges all 4-H members and families to financially donate to Eli’s Fund.

• 4-H clubs can collect donations, have a bake sale, a car wash or other event; the collected funds would then be donated online:

Texas 4-H Wildlife Habitat Education Project State Contest

The Texas 4-H Wildlife Habitat Education Project (WHEP) is an interactive program that teaches youth about wildlife, habitat, habitat management, and nat-ural resources stewardship. In addition, life skills such as team work, critical thinking, public speaking, and observation are underlying objectives in this youth development effort. Creating educated and involved stewards of natural resources is the long term goal.

Various practice and competitive contests are asso-ciated with this program. Participation is not required in these to be involved in this wildlife study program but often a contest enhances the learning experi-ence of the youth involved. All contests within the state are open to all ages within 4-H membership.

The WHEP State Contest is held annually in June in a different part of the state each year so a different ecological region can be explored and studied each year. This contest uses the current WHEP Manual posted on the 4-H Wildlife webpage and the specific Rules and Procedures written and posted for this contest. The contest is designed for each age divi-sion in 4-H; Junior, Intermediate, and Senior. The contest is held outdoors in wildlife habitat as de-scribed in the Rules and Procedures.

WHEN: June 25-26, 2016 LOCATION: Southwest Texas Junior College, Uvalde, Texas WHEP Project Region of Study: Prairie Brushland WHEP Manual: 4-H Wildlife and Fisheries Webpage http://texas4-h.tamu.edu/projects/wildlife-fisheries/ (scroll to ‘Resources’ and choose ‘2015 Edition WHEP Manual’) ELIGIBILITY: Any current 4-H member is eligible to register as a team member or an individual. This contest does not require a participant to qualify in any other way. Each youth contestant must register on their personal family profile.

REGISTRATION PROCESS: May 1 - June 13, 2016 Registration is completed online through 4-H Con-nect (https://texas.4honline.com). Registration dead-line is June 13, 2016. Registration fee per individual youth contestant is $25.

On Sunday, May 22nd, the Uvalde County 4-H Dog Show was held at the Uvalde County Fairplex. Participants competed in Showmanship, Groups, Best of Show and Sub-Novice Obedience.

Showmanship: The handler and dog appear to be part of a team. They work well together, move fluidly, and give an overall picture of being one unit. If a dog moves out of place or makes an error, a good handler is aware of this. The handler quickly and efficiently adjusts for the fault and resumes his/her presentation of the dog. Senior Showmanship: 1st Place—Brianna Cassin Junior Showmanship: 1st Place—Morgan Dreyer 2nd Place—Carly Rae Colvin 3rd Place—Victoria Phillips 4th Place—Elizabeth Phillips 5th Place—Makenzie Mortensen 6th Place—Peyton Phillips 7th Place—Madeline Cruce 8th Place—Anna Cate Walker 9th Place—Kayleigh Griffin

Confirmation Groups: A variety is a division of a breed based on coat, color or size. Each variety competes separately in the Group. Sporting Group: Herding Group: 1st—Peyton Phillips 1st—Victoria Phillips 2nd—Brianna Cassin 2nd—Morgan Dreyer 3rd—Anna Cate Walker 4th—Kayleigh Griffin Toy Group: 1st—Carly Rae Colvin Non-Purebred 2nd—Mackenzie Mortenson Over 25 lbs: 3rd—Madeline Cruce 1st—Elizabeth Phillips

Best in Show: The award of the dog selected from among the finalist as the best dog among all entries. Best of Show: Purebred: Victoria Phillips Non-Purebred: Elizabeth Phillips

Sub-Novice Obedience begins the formal development of core skills, with more emphasis on attention. Movements include: Heeling as a precise position is introduced as well as

related footwork, turns, and changes of pace. Recalls begin to include a sit in front and a finish at your

side. A sit and a stand for examination require the dog to

allow someone to approach and touch them without movement.

The Heel on Leash and the Figure 8 Sub-Novice Obedience: 1st—Makenzie Mortenson 6th—Madeline Cruce 2nd—Carly Rae Colvin 7th—Elizabeth Phillips 3rd—Anna Cate Walker 8th—Brianna Cassin 4th—Peyton Phillips 9th—Morgan Dreyer 5th—Victoria Phillips 10th—Kayleigh Griffin

This year’s Master of Ceremony was Tracy O. King and judg-ing this year’s competition was Anneka Dahle, who is part of the USA Junior Agility Team, ages 12-18, that will compete in the European Open Junior Competition in Pinkafeld, Austria, on July 13-15 and in 4-H for 6 years.

With the assistance of Project Leader, William Cassin and Teen Leader, Meaghann Cassin, this year’s dog show was very successful.

The Uvalde County Extension Office would like to say a very special “Thank you” to the entire Cassin Family, First State Bank of Uvalde & Uvalde County Fairplex for their use of their facilities and their staff. Also, thank you to Tracy Colvin for the photos.
