President’s Message: March 2019 Newsletter

Dear Fellow UWFA Members, We are looking forward to March and our Luncheon Lecture on March 13th, when we will hear Dr. Julie Stein, Director of the Burke Museum, "Turning the Museum Inside-Out: The New Burke Museum of Natural History and Culture". Be sure to attend to show your support and bring a friend to this wonderful and timely lecture. As you know by now, our February Luncheon Lecture had to be canceled due to the snow. We will reschedule Professor Pamela Collins and her talk on Global Mental Health for next fall.

The Nominating committee is hard at work trying to fill the empty ballot slots for our April election of officers. The open positions are: President Vice President Treasurer The Annual Meeting is on Monday, April 8th. In addition to voting for the new slate of officers and voting on a By Laws Amendment, we will also be celebrating our 111th year as the UW Faculty Auxiliary. We will have some fun celebrations. Please contact me, if you are willing to share your story and what the UWFA has meant to you. There will be some old photographs to view, we’ll have a member skit, and other remembrances, because few organizations make it to 111 years.

But we did, and with your support and commitment, like becoming a board member, we could easily make many more remembrances. In order to continue functioning and bringing these speakers and activities, we need your active involvement. Hoping to see you all at these next two events Sincerely Dagmar Shannon UWFA President 2018/19

Seattle Seattle Fare Start Lunch January 2019 FareStart is a non-profit organization that trains homeless and disadvantaged individuals for jobs in the culinary industry, empowering

them to transform their lives. An intensive program works to build a strong foundation and support system for every student. The training combines hands-on food-service training with classroom instruction, individual case management, and job placement services. https://www.farestart.org/

Washington’s oldest museum and the State Museum of Natural History and Culture since 1899; soon it will be Washington’s newest museum. The new, 113,000 sq. ft. building will be 66% larger than the current facility. Nearly 60% of the museum will be accessible or visible to visitors (compared to just over 30% today). Twelve visible, state-of-the-art labs and an artists’ workshop will serve more students and researchers, and more education space will allow the Burke to potentially double the number of Pre-K–12 students served each year. UW Club members call the Club at 206-543-0437 for reservations. Non UW Club members call Barbara Archbold at 206-719-3038 or email her at [email protected] to reserve and arrange payment.

Annual Meeting Monday, April 8, 1:30 –3:30 at the UW Club

Business meeting followed by a celebration of the UWFA’s 111th year

A quorum of 30 is required. We will conduct the UWFA’s business and elect our board for next year.

VOTE ON PROPOSED BY LAWS AMENDMENT AT THE APRIL BUSINESS MEETING

Our By Laws state that the UWFA “President (or Co-Presidents) shall be elected…for a term of one year and may be elected for an additional term.” This effectively limits an individual to two one-year terms as President. For all other Board members, the wording in the By Laws is, “The other members of the Board of Directors shall be elected…for a term of one year and may be re-elected for additional terms.” There have been years when the Nominating Committee has simply been unsuccessful at recruiting a qualified and willing person to serve as President, who has not already served for two years. In these cases, we have prevailed upon certain duty-minded individuals to serve a third one-year term, essentially circumventing the By Laws*. To avoid this situation in the future, the Board of Directors proposes a small amendment to the By Laws. ARTICLE IV. Board of Directors and Officers and Elections SECTION 3. Term of Office. The President (or Co-Presidents) shall be elected by the Board of Directors for a term of one year and may be elected for an additional term additional terms. Please plan to attend; we need at least 30 members present for a quorum. Contact Parliamentarian Sue Christian or any Board member with questions or comments. *Three-term presidents have been Ruth Eller, Carol Hol, Carmen Robbin, Tina Schiess and Dagmar Shannon.

Seattle Seattle Visits the Tacoma Art Museum On February 20 about twenty UWFA members and guests (a childhood friend of Barbara Archbold and Linda Prot’s granddaughter) visited the Rebecca and Jack Benaroya Wing of the Tacoma Art Museum. The wing opened in January 2019 to house their collection of glass,

making Tacoma Art Museum one of the top five public collections of studio art glass in the country. We had a docent-led tour and learned about the rich history of the studio art glass movement in the Pacific Northwest as we admired the collection. Included were: Metaphor into Form: Art in the Era of the Pilchuck Glass School; Debora Moore: Arboria; Mary Van Cline: Selections from the Documenta Project and All the Rivers Flow in the Sea: Introducing Martin Blank's Current.

Mazama Cross-country Ski Trip

The SILVER Trekkers hiked the Lund’s Gulch at Meadowdale County Park in Lynnwood. After negotiating a snowy slope, many WTA-

constructed stairs, and passing through lovely forest, we reached the shore. The tide was only a modestly low one, so we were not able to hike very far up or down the beach. After returning to our cars, we

drove a few miles south to Southwest County Park in north Edmonds. This park extends on both sides of Marine View Drive at a deep bend in the road. First we explored the loops of trails within the SE side of

the bend and then crossed the road to hike a very lovely trail that parallels the NW outside of the bend. This trail had lots of huge stumps with springboard notches and a number of signs along the way

describing early logging history in the area. All in all, a nice outing.

Tuesday Trekker report from February 19, 2019: GOLD walk report: The Golds walked from Gas Works Park to the Center of the Universe with a detour to Berlin as we saw a section of the Berlin Wall; we also tasted Theo’s chocolate and paid a visit to the resident Troll. I had no idea that there was a section of the Berlin Wall in Fremont and no one I have asked since has been aware of that either. There’s always something new to explore even in places that we think we know well.
