March is Women’s History Month

Newbery Honor and Coretta Scott King

Award-winning author Renée Watson teams up

with poet Ellen Hagan in this YA feminist

anthem about raising your voice.

Jasmine and Chelsea are best friends on a

mission--they're sick of the way women are

treated even at their progressive NYC high

school, so they decide to start a Women's

Rights Club. They post their work

online--poems, essays, videos of Chelsea

performing her poetry, and Jasmine's response

to the racial microaggressions she

experiences--and soon they go viral. But with

such positive support, the club is also targeted

by trolls. When things escalate in real life, the

principal shuts the club down. Not willing to be

silenced, Jasmine and Chelsea will risk

everything for their voices--and those of other

young women--to be heard.

These two dynamic, creative young women

stand up and speak out in a novel that features

their compelling art and poetry along with

powerful personal journeys that will inspire

readers and budding poets, feminists, and

activists.

All honorable mentions also received a gift certificate. Look for this essay next year on the Scholarship list—all sixth through twelfth grade students are encouraged to participate in this essay with submissions at the end of January.

School buses will not be able to travel on this road. Please log into Infinite Campus to check for new stop locations, times and route numbers. New routes will take effect March 16. The village has more information on its website about the Maple Avenue Reconstruction Project including a full detour map. Students that drive should allow adequate time to avoid the detours.

Student Weekly Book Recommendation

All the Bright Places

By Jennifer Niven

Netflix movie - released on February 28!

Theodore Finch is fascinated by death, and he

constantly thinks of ways he might kill himself. But

each time, something good, no matter how small,

stops him.

Violet Markey lives for the future, counting the days

until graduation, when she can escape her Indiana

town and her aching grief in the wake of her sister’s

recent death.

When Finch and Violet meet on the ledge of the

bell tower at school, it’s unclear who saves whom.

And when they pair up on a project to discover the

“natural wonders” of their state, both Finch and

Violet make more important discoveries: It’s only

with Violet that Finch can be himself—a weird,

funny, live-out-loud guy who’s not such a freak

after all. And it’s only with Finch that Violet can

forget to count away the days and start living them.

But as Violet’s world grows, Finch’s begins to

shrink.

The movie- stars Elle Fanning and Justice Smith.

Student Weekly Book Recommendation

Color Outside the Lines:

Stories About Love

Edited by Sangu Mandanna

This modern, groundbreaking YA anthology explores the complexity and beauty of

interracial and LGBTQ+ relationships where differences are front and center.

When people ask me what this anthology is about, I’m often tempted to give them the

complicated answer: it’s about race, and about how being different from the person you love can matter but how it can also not matter, and

it’s about Chinese pirate ghosts, black girl vigilantes, colonial India, a flower festival, a

garden of poisons, and so, so much else. Honestly, though? I think the answer’s much simpler than that. Color outside the Lines is a

collection of stories about young, fierce, brilliantly hopeful people in love.

Student Weekly Book Recommendation

February is Black History Month

Read one of these new books!

Say Her Name

Poetry by Zetta Elliott

Say her name and solemnly vow

Never to forget, or allow

Our sisters’ lives to be erased;

Their presence cannot be replaced.

This senseless slaughter must stop now.

Award-winning author Zetta Elliott engages

poets from the past two centuries to create a

chorus of voices celebrating the creativity,

resilience, and courage of Black women and

girls. Inspired by the #SayHerName campaign

launched by the African American Policy

Forum, these poems pay tribute to victims of

police brutality as well as the activists

championing the Black Lives Matter cause.

This compelling collection reveals the beauty,

danger, and magic found at the intersection of

race and gender.
