Uxbridge Preparative Meeting

1817 - 1840

This minute book is held by the Canadian Quaker Archives and Library in Newmarket, Ontario.

This transcription was done from the images of a filming available at the Archives of Ontario

(MS 303, reel 43 & 44) under the coordination of Randy Saylor. The image numbers below refer

to the digital copy. The text was transcribed as written so researchers must consider the many

variations in spelling when searching the transcribed text. Minor changes to paragraphing were

done to make reading easier especially in the case of long run on sentences. Transcribers notes

are in square brackets and hard to decipher words are indicated with question marks.

Uxbridge meeting was established in 1806 as an indulged meeting and later as a Preparative

meeting in 1817 under Yonge St Monthly meeting. The meeting house was built in 1820 and

survives today. To learn about the early settlement read this excellent article, Stories from

Uxbridge Quaker Heritage, Allan McGillivray, Canadian Quaker Journal, 2004/5, Vol 69-70, 7-

17, online at CFHA.

Given that Uxbridge was a Preparative meeting, researchers wishing to follow what happens to

business items that arise, should go to the Yonge St MM minutes for the following month.

This book remained in the hands of the Hicksite Quakers after 1828 however the Orthodox

retained the meeting house. In 1842 the Uxbridge and Pickering Hicksite Quakers were

reorganized as the Pickering Monthly Meeting (Hicksite). The Uxbridge Hicksites built a new

meeting house in 1844. [History of the Society of Friends in Canada, Dorland, 174]

Pursuant to A Request of friends of Uxbridge for the establishment of A Meeting for

Worship An A preparitive Meeting, And agreeable to the conclusion and Direction of young

street Monthly meeting, with the approbation of the half years Meeting; Friends being now met

at Uxbridge, in the capacity of A preparitive Meeting this 6th Day of the third month 1817,

together with the committee of the monthly Meeting, who were Appointed to attend the opening

thereof; And produced the following Minutes Viz. At young street monthly Meeting held the 18th

Day of the 2nd Month 1817 It appears by the Extracts from the half years Meeting That, that

meeting, unites with us in the Establishment of A meeting for Worship, And A Preparitive

meeting at Uxbridge, to be held as proposed by this Meeting. That is, the meeting, for Worship,

to be held on first and fifth days of the week; to begin at the usual hour. And the Preparitive

Meeting to be held the first fifth Day following the first First Day in each Month to be called

Uxbridge, preparitive Meeting - The week day Meeting on the week of the half years Meeting, at

young street to be omitted; Which this meeting taking into further Consideration, Unites in the

Preparitves Meeting being opened

Thomas Hilborn, and Charles Chapman to bring forward the name of A friend to Serve in that

meeting house at bridge water, and 550 dollars for A meeting house at Baltimore, 450 dollars

for A meeting house at Harwick, And this meetings proportion of 100 dollars for the half years

by the monthly meeting, have agreed that for every hundred dollars to be raised by the monthly

meeting, youngstreet preparitive meeting raise 40 dollars, Queen street Preparitive 5 dollars,

Witchurch preparitive 42 dollars, Uxbridge Preparitive 13 dollars, and in the same proportion for

any other sum wanted, for the monthly Meeting with which this meeting concurs, the clerke is

directed to forward an Extract of this minute to the different Preparitive Meetings, Extracted

from the Minutes

monthly Meeting held the 12th of 3rd Month 1818. This Meeting taking into consideration the

propriety of reading and answering the Queries according to Discipline, in the fifth and tenth

months annually, as well as at the times usually to have been here to fore answerd Concluded

thereon, The different preparative Meetings are directed to send forward answers Agreeable

thererto, in their reports to the monthly meeting.

Meeting with the number it may wont, at a price not Exceeding twenty five cents, half bound to

be paid when the books are sent for. The different preparatives Meetings are recommended to

open subscriptions for what Number they may wish for, and forward the same to the monthly

the following Extract….

At youngstreet monthly meeting held 16th of 9th Month 1819 The committee appointed,

to revise the Quotas of the Preparitive meetings, report they have attended thereto, and agree

to propose, that when ten Dollars is to be raised, youngstreet raises 3 1/2 , Queenstreet one,,

Witchurch 2 ½, Uxbridge one and Pickering, which is united with, and directed down to the

observance of the Preparitive Meetings.

It appears by the Extracts of the half years Meeting, that the following revision of the

Quotas of the monthly meetings, are to be observed in future, to wit, Adolphus raise thirty,

young Street thirty, Pelham and Norwich each twenty percent of all monies to be raised by the

half years Meeting. It also appears by said extracts that the monthly meeting is directed to raise

its proportion of one thousand Dollars, for the yearly meetings use and its proportion of 625

Dollars, to assist in building two Meetinghouses, and forward to the clerke of the half years

meeting.

This meeting directs the different preparitive meetings to raise their Quotas, of the above

sums, and forward to the treasurer of this Meeting.

The clerke is directed to forward an extract of the above Minutes to the different

preparitive Meetings.

First Ans. All our Meetings for worship and Discipline are attended by a Considerable number

of our Members, The Hour nearly observed, we believe friends endeavour to guard against

4th Ans. Friends do avoid the unnecessary use of Spirituous liquors, frequenting taverns or

attending places of diversion except one instance of a friend attending a place of diversion

which is under Care.

5th Ans. We know of none amongst us that requires assistance at this time, and endeavour to

give their Children School learning to fit them for business.

6rh. We know of none amongst us keeping Company with persons not of our Society on

account of Marriage, nor attending the marriages of those that go out from us, or marriages

accomplished by a priest.

7th. We believe friends are Clear of bearing arms of Complying with military requisitions, or of

paying any fine or tax in lieu thereof.

At Uxbridge Preparative Meeting held the 8th day of the Fifth Month 1828.

The Queries were read and deliberately Considered in this Meeting and Answers to

those that required answering at this time prepared and Concluded on in Substance as follows;

which are directed to the ensuing Monthly Meeting.

1st Ans. Friends are mostly careful generally to attend all our Meetings on first days; Those for

Discipline and other mid-week Meetings are too much neglected by some, the Hour for the most

part nearly observed, Friends are mostly Clear of Sleeping, no other unbecoming behavior in

them.

2nd. It appears that love and Unity are maintained amongst most of our Members as becomes

brethren, when differences become known, Care is mostly taken speedily to end them; and

friends mostly avoid and discourage talebearing and detraction.

3rd. Friends generally endeavour to keep themselves, their own and other friends Children

under their Care in plainness of speech behaviour and apparrel and to train them up in a

religious life and Conversation Consistant with our Christian profession. The Scriptures of truth



appears to be frequently read in friends families and some Care is extended in these respects

towards others under our tuition.

4th. It appears that friends do avoid the Unnecessary Use of spirituous liquors, frequenting

taverns or attending places of diversion.

9th. Care is mostly taken seasonably to deal with offenders (we trust) in the spirit of Meekness

and agreeably to ur discipline.

Pearson to take the necessary Care thereof untill the Preparative Meeting in the fifth Month next

The appointment of the Meetings Clerk being nearly expired. William Pearson and

Isaiah Chapman are are [sic] appointed to bring forward the name of a suitable friend to serve in

First Ans Most friends are careful to attend all our meetings for religious worship and Discipline,

the hour is nearly observed, None to Charge with Sleeping in Meetings And no other

unbecoming behavour in them

2nd It appears that Love and unity are Maintaind And unity are Maintaind amongst friends, as

becomes Bretheren. When Differences become known Care is taken speedily to end them, and

friends endeavour to avoid and Discourage talebearing and Detraction

3rd Friends endeavour to keep themselves their own and other friends Children under their Care

in plainness of Speech behavour and apparel And do endeavour by example and precept to

train them up in a religious Life and Conversation, Consistant with our Christian profession. The

Scriptures of truth are frequently read in friends families and Some care is extended in these

respects towards others under their Tuition.

4th We believe friends do avoid, the Unnecessary use of spirituous Liquors frequenting taverns

or attending places of Diversion.

9th Care is Mostly taken Seasonably to Deal with offenders, we trust in the spirit of Meakness

Subscription its proportion of 150 Dollars for the use of the Committee on Indian Concerns and

Endeavour to raise our proportion of said sum and pay as directed and report in the 12th Month

Subscription to appoint a Committee to Establish a School within its limits to be entirely under

the Care of Friends, and to see that the Children of such friends as are not in Circumstances to

pay are placed at the Schools and the monthly Meetings be directed to pay a part or all of the

amount as may appear best, and that the meetings report to our next yearly Meeting the

number of Schools so established and the number of Schollars that have attended also that this

Committee be directed to aid friends procuring Suitable Teachers for family Schools; this

received at this, directing the different Preparatives to raise their respective Quota, of 150

Dollars for the Use of the Committee on Indian Concerns, and Also to open Subscriptions to

assist friends in remote Situations to School their Children and pay the money raised to the

Treasurer of that meeting

Sum, the subject is therefore discontinued in our minutes.

reports he attended, and produced a receipt from Nicholas Brown for the sum of 2£ 58 in part of

this meetings Quota for building Pickering meeting House.
