Saturday 3rd December 2011Midlands 2 West (South)
Old Laurentian RFC v Barkers Butts RFC
Programme£3
Welcome to Fenley Field Welcome to Fenley Field for today’s league game in Midlands 2 West (South). Today we are delighted to welcome our old friends Barkers Butts to Fenley Field. We hope that their players, officials and supporters enjoy the day with us. We are also pleased to welcome today’s match referee, Marcus Greenway, of the Warwickshire Society.
Last weekend was a great one for a couple of reasons. Firstly, we fielded four senior sides for the first time for some years. No‐one has come forward yet with the definitive answer to exactly how many years, but it has to be at least ten, probably more. Any ideas out there? The best part of that historic (fairly!) achievement was that three out of the four sides won. The man who takes most of the credit for it is Tim Chambers. Tim has worked assiduously to develop his third XV and so successful has he been that we have been enjoying a surplus of players most weekends. Tim’s talent doesn’t stop there – see his match report from Bedworth later in this programme. Secondly, the 1st XV put their indifferent league performances behind them to win their Intermediate Cup quarter‐final against a very good Bugbrooke side which is in second place in Midlands 2 East (S). Probably our best performance of the season so far was against Newark in the previous round – this one came close to it. Newark arrived here with a 100% league record in Midlands 2 East (N) which they have maintained since, a further compliment to our performance on that day. The semi‐finals of the Intermediate Cup in the Midlands are scheduled for 11th February and it’s disappointing that Newbold lost on Saturday so no chance of a great local derby in the semis. But Lutterworth remain, along with Stafford and Stoke on Trent, so we await the draw with great interest. But one match that will generate a lot of local interest is our Warwickshire Cup tie against Broadstreet, which will be played under their lights on Wednesday 21st December, ko 7.30.

Barkers Butts RFC
Barkers Butts RFC was founded in 1947, succeeding the old Daimler RFC when that club ceased to exist. The club was based originally in the Keresley area, before moving to its present ground at Pickford Grange Lane in 1975.
It often refers to itself as the ‘club at the centre of England’, because of its proximity to Meriden, the village that lays claim to that distinction.
Barkers takes great pride in its youth policy, having had a Colts side for over 45 years and founding its flourishing mini and junior section in 1973.
When leagues were first introduced, Barkers were placed in Midlands One (now National 3 Midlands) and have spent most of the intervening years in the top three regional leagues, a very consistent record.
.If the club could field an all‐star XV of former players it would be impressive, as they number the likes of Neil Back, Danny Grewcock, Rob Hardwick and Leon Lloyd amongst their alumni. To that illustrious list is now added the name of Tom Wood, who could be the best of them all – he is already being spoken of as a future England captain.
OLs have had a number of tussles with them in recent years, twice knocking them out of the Warwickshire Cup when playing in a league below. We came up against them during our relegation season in Midlands One in 2005/6 – and who present could forget ‘that try’ by Nipper Nealon that won the away game for us!
Barkers arrive at Fenley Field today with a very impressive record this season, havingwon every one of their eight league games so far; and have already opened up a six point gap between themselves and second placed Newbold. Two weeks ago they reinforced that position by seeing off Newbold’s challenge, beating them by 20‐14.
So we know we are in for a testing time this afternoon; but we also know that, at our best, we are capable of rising to challenges of this sort.

1st XV Match Report RFU Intermediate Cup, Semi‐Final – Saturday 26th November Bugbrooke 7 – Old Laurentians 14 Having disposed of the leaders of Midlands 2 East (North) in the previous round, OLs handed out the same treatment to the side placed second in the southern division of that league on Saturday. Putting their indifferent league form of recent weeks behind them, they turned in another performance of power and precision for the whole eighty minutes to knock out a very useful Bugbrooke side and progress to the semi‐final.
The home side were first to show after some early positional sparring, taking advantage of a missed touch finder by OLs to put their right wing Adam Pepper away. He showed lightning pace to outflank OL’s defence and touch down for the game’s first score after twenty minutes, Sean Boyson converting his try.
Luke Harris and Jon Bean were paired for the first time at half back in OL’s first team, and made a very strong case to be given further opportunities together. Bean kicked a penalty after twenty four minutes to reward some strong attacking pressure from OLs, whose forwards, reinforced by the welcome return after injury of Carl Adams, were beginning to dominate affairs up front.
But Bugbrooke’s backs were continuing to look dangerous and Pepper again showed his pace, only to be thwarted by a magnificent cover tackle by Matt Miller that saved a certain try.
Full back Greg Loydall was composed and efficient in tidying up at the back and OLs offered few further opportunities to the home side’s back line.
With Adams and Chris le Poidevin putting in some driving runs that regularly had Bugbrooke on the back foot, OLs were now in the driving seat and more forward pressure gave Bean the chance to put over another penalty, half time arriving with Bugbrooke ahead by just 7‐6 and the game finely poised.
OLs went back on the offensive in the second half, more driving mauls drawing penalties as Bugbrooke struggled to contain the assault. Now faced with a strong wind, OLs opted to go for touch as Paul Willis and Ben Anderson were dominant in the lineout, certainly assisted by Mark Todd’s accurate throwing in very blustery conditions.
After yet another penalty, le Podevin showed sharp reactions to take a quick tap and plunge over for a try. The conversion missed, but OLs were now 11‐7 ahead and in charge of the game.
Twenty minutes in and Bean kicked another penalty to lift OL’s lead to 14‐7 and set up a tense final quarter. Inevitably, Bugbrooke came back at OLs in an effort to salvage the game. But they encountered some strong defence and were held with few alarms, forced to forgo penalty shots at goal as they needed to go for a try as the minutes ticked away.
OLs held out comfortably enough to go through, and must now take their cup form into league matches as the semi‐finals are not due until late January. Unfortunately the enticing prospect of a semi‐final meeting with Newbold disappeared when Bold lost to Stafford on Saturday – that would have been a crowd puller!
Matt Miller looked sharp on his return to first team duty in the centre, as did Mark Todd at hooker; and Greg Loydall made a very strong case for retaining the 15 jersey. Flankers James Orbinson and Ben O’Riordan were always busy and competitive, happily reunited with Carl Adams in a fine back row effort; and Andy Coleman yet again displayed his value to the team, this week on the wing

Sundry Stuff Whither the RFU…? The debate about the structure, governance and the very competence of the RFU has raged for several weeks and covered thousands of column inches in the press. Prominent in the debate is one man, it seems. Will Rob Andrew go – or will he be pushed? At the self‐same time that the Leveson Commission is reviewing the role of the press and the way that they have hounded individuals over the years, they are doing it again before our very eyes – the press has acted as judge, jury and executioner in Andrew’s case. What is also very clear from reading the prolific output of many writers on the subject is that the grassroots game is largely overlooked, and clearly not understood, by those writers – and, it would seem by some of those in positions of power and influence. Typical of this is the recommendation by Slaughter and May, included in the report commissioned by the RFU on its structure and governance, concerning the allocation of international tickets through clubs. They say the practice should end, in order to allow ‘real enthusiasts’ to get tickets for internationals. Surely the members of grassroots clubs are those ‘real
enthusiasts’! Where else would you find them? The report in the Telegraph, by Gavin Mairs, said that the measure would never get through because clubs rely on the income from tickets they are allocated. How? Sell them on at prices above face value and you run the serious risk of the RFU banning your club from ever being allocated tickets again! Again, a complete lack of understanding of the way things really work! It is easy to get the impression sometimes that the RFU is run purely for the benefit of the professional game – and the press follow suit.. Babe magnet The older members in the coach party travelling back from Upton on Severn two weeks ago decided to take a break from the drinking during the stopover in Stratford in order to find somewhere to eat. Walking back from the restaurant, a leggy blonde, clad in leather from neck to toe, suddenly ran across the street to our group and homed in on one man – Mike Warwick. He flatly declined to divulge the contents of the conversation – or of the piece of paper she thrust into his hand! How does he do it?

RFU Intermediate Cup ‐ Midlands Lutterworth are the surprise package of this season, lying third in Midlands 2 East (South) and now in the semi‐final of the Intermediate Cup. This after narrowly avoiding relegation from Midlands East (North) in the previous two seasons before ‘going south’. When the semi‐final draw is made wouldn’t it be good if it paired Stoke and Stafford on the one hand and ourselves and Lutterworth on the other – two great ‘derby’ matches. But it probably won’t happen! What definitely won’t happen is an OLs v Newbold clash – that would have been a gem and a real money spinner. The team to avoid are Stoke on Trent. Current Intermediate Cup holders and runaway leaders of Midlands 2 West (North) they are probably favourites to win the Midlands section of the Cup. Their website states that their win away at Leamington ‘should mean that they get a home semi‐final tie’. They obviously know something we don’t about the machinations of the ‘draw’! Stafford are below halfway in the same league so their win over Newbold was slightly surprising.

Match Report – Saturday 19 November th
Bedworth 3rds 14 ‐ Old Laurentian 3rds 39
Saturday dawned. Dank, grey, foggy and still.
Shining like the Lighthouse of Alexandria from the November gloom, Bedworth – Vegas of the West Midlands, host to the travelling thirds. For some, this was their first time playing the gentlemen of Bedworth, for others their second time this season and, for the older fraternity, the latest in a series of sporting contest going back decades. The laws change, the boots change, the players change.
Bedworth don’t.
Streetwise as a stray dog in Bombay and crafty as a box of foxes, Bedworth were at their predictable combative best. The OLs tactic was obvious. Play at pace and get it away from the maul masters of the Bedworth pack.
From the kick off, this tactic worked well for the thirds as the ball was shipped through Ben Roach at scrum half to the newly promoted Ben Wiles at 10 and out to the pacy and ever more promising backs. Speed aplenty was evident with Ryan “Usain” Cleaver living up to his name, carving his way downfield aided and abetted by Tom Johnson in the centres, the frustration this caused Bedworth was rewarded with a penalty, slotted by Wiles to give the visitors the early lead. From the restart it was more of the same and the first try of the game was scored through Wiles, whose individual class could not be countered by Bedworth. White converted.
A boot here, an elbow there, Bedworth were fast reverting to type and trying to tie the ball up in a series of rolling mauls and exchanges of an increasingly pugilistic nature.
But it wasn’t just the backs that caused the home side problems. Stingray was simply magnificent in the tight. Like a disturbing cross between a steroidal Jack Russell terrier and a JCB, Stingray stole, ripped, fought and battered his way to turnover maul after maul from the Bedworth eight.
Although the makeshift scrum struggled against one of the best Warwickshire has to offer, the lineout proved a very happy hunting ground for OLs with Paul Lewis a towering and unbeatable jumper at four and Badger Brimley as reliable as ever at two.
A second try for Wiles, converted by White, put some distance between the two sides and the pace was maintained to pin Bedworth in their half for most of the first 40 minutes and, just before half time, the champagne was nearly popped as Stuart Page came painfully close to scoring in the right hand corner.
Rhys Wade, playing at 8, popped up all over the place. At times as delicate as a quails egg dipped in celery salt, at others as ferocious and powerful as a chicken jalfrezi – always the right decision, always the ball passed to hand, always reliable. Was there ever a more complete player for the club?
During periods of Bedworth possession, the OLs defence stood firm, with a particularly notable tackling performance out wide from Craig Middleton.
Half time saw the, now familiar exchange of wingers with Barry Hipwell and debutant Matt Davey replacing Page and Middleton. Jason King replaced James Barber at loose head shortly after half time and it was only seconds before King found himself, ball in hand, and in a bit of space. It is difficult to know whether King was more shocked at running 30 yards than the team was that he made 30 yards but, either way, the incursion led to a try taken with complete nonchalance by Brimley.
Tries followed from Roach and, deservedly, the two mercurial centres Cleaver and Johnson.
For many reasons, it’s always great to travel home from Bedworth with a win and this one was convincing. For the third week running, a game plan stuck to paid dividends.
Whilst others scored tries, kicked goals, dummied, shimmied and sprinted, this was Stingray’s day, Stingray in the zone, his own private Rugby heaven, a man operating outside of this mortal plane.
A Rugby God.

Editor’s Note: It appears to undervalue this item seriously to describe it merely as a ‘Match Report’! Not since the halcyon days of Neville Cardus has a sports writer combined lyrical prose and fact so elegantly.
