C ongratulations to Ben Goddard and Hanna, Luke Taylor and My-sha, both have become parents in the last week. Caleb was born
to Ben and Hanna, whilst Hallie is the name of Mysha and Lukes son. We wish them all well during this great but life changing time! It’s fanatic to report that all are fit and healthy, well Lukes fitness is within context. There are others who are expecting additions to their family over the next few weeks so remember them as well. Congratulations of a different type are also given to Julian Reads U18 Thurlow Nunn team who beat Little Oakley last week. As a Club we were expecting this team to struggle a little this season as they are predominately u16, playing in a very strong u18 league. Last week there were eight u16’s in the team. They have performed exceptionally well and this-bodes well for the future. For the record Josh Thomas, Joe Banks and Ciaran Brown got the Sporting goals. Today we welcome Bures to the Victory Ground for our Suffolk FA Total Football Junior Cup fixture. There are several con-nections with the two clubs with Kurt

Water-field and James Cadby both playing for them previ-ously. The Bures squad also includes previous Sporting players Ben Tracey and Jack Durey which all makes for an interesting cup fixture. Later in the programme there is an article celebrating the fact that this is the 350 Sporting First Team pro-gramme since 1997 which is a tremen-dous milestone for the Club. Thank you to all the people that have contributed articles over the years and to those sponsors that have enabled this publi-cation to be printed. Next week we have our final home fixture of the year when we entertain Halesworth at the Victory ground in the league. I hope you enjoy this after-noons game. Jonathan Warnock First Team Manager

Young Leaders asked to be ball boys for Ipswich Town.
I t was a fantastic afternoon for Sport-ing 87 Young leaders and volunteers who were ball boys for Ipswich Town’s recent home match against
Blackpool. The afternoon began with a
briefing to the Young leaders by Ipswich Town officials who emphasised the im-portance of being impartial. They were reminded of Yeovil Towns recent home match against Bromley when all the ball
boys were removed as the referee deemed they were hindering rather than helping the action on the field by delaying giving the ball back to the opposing team. Naturally, all our Young leaders were impeccably behaved. It was a good game for the specta-tor which featured two controversial penalties in the space of five second half minutes. The home side domi-nated possession with some good quick passing and pushed for a late winner, but the result ended as an entertaining draw. Our ball boys close to the North stand goal were in the midst of Town’s equalising goal celebrations; something they will always remember. All agreed after the match that being so close to the players was such a fantastic experience. A big thank you to Suffolk FA and Ipswich Town for making the day possible. It was a great reward for the Young leaders who dedicate so much of their time to supporting others at Sporting 87. Tim Whittingdale

Striker: I’m armed with the gospel
C hristian striker Olivier Giroud is wearing his heart on his sleeve after revealing he has Psalm 23 tattooed on his arm in Latin.
Former Arsenal – turned-Chelsea Goalscor-er Giroud is a devout believer and has now added to his ink collection with his favour-ite Scripture. Giroud’s new tattoo reads ‘Dominus regit me et nihil mihi deerit’, which translates to ‘The Lord is my Shepherd, I shall not want’. While he also has designs on his left bicep that symbolize faith, love, family friends and health, France international Giroud is connected to St Barnabus Church in Ken-sington and is passionate about speaking God’s love. “I am very grateful to have the opportuni-ty to live my dream. To live every single day for me is a day blessed. I grew up with my mother bringing me every single Sun-day to church. “After, I just carried on and now I’m seeing a Christian priest studying the Bible to-gether and I feel like I want to know more about Jesus Christ’s life.
“Every time I read the Bible it makes me
feel grateful about everything that has
happened to me. And positive because
so many bad things happen in the
world.”

Football Season is On! Although football is no way among the top dangerous sports in the world the rate of injuries is still quite high. Some of the inju-ries can be prevented with proper training and advise. Some of the most common football injuries are: Ankle Sprains- might happen while running on an uneven sur-face or changing direction at a moment’s notice. The ligaments of your ankle joint could become overstretched and could cause the ankle to roll inwards or outwards. Based on a full physical examination and special tests, your physiotherapist will identify which grade is your sprain. A graduated rehabilitation plan will then be suggested including manual therapy techniques, range of motion, active stability, motor coordination and strengthening. The focus of treatment is to protect the joint, reduce inflamma-tion & swelling, restore function and present recurrence. A grad-uated return to sports and running will be suggested including evidence-based therapy programme for jogging and running simulation and conditioning (Polyometrics). Proprioceptive re-training is a must following this type of injury in order to maxim-ise joint stability and improve coordination and present re-injury. This will involve a specifically designed program on wobble board & vibration plate. Saturday afternoon session walking footy play-ers
E stablished 2015, we now have over 50 regular players in three weekly sessions. The Sporting Educational Trust’s walking foot-
ball sessions are extensively about build-ing community through playing fun foot-ball and fellowship. The relatively new team sport of walking football has de-mocratised our wonderful team sport like no other format of the game, providing fun for all ages; ladies and gents; begin-ners to veterans.
The sessions provide informal and fun matches; slower paced games with no running and no contact. The games are played in the right spirit, with respect and thought for others, so there’s no need for referees (our coaches are there to organise, en-sure you have a good time and pro-vide individual assistance). The Trust is affiliated to the national FA and the separate Walking Foot-ball Association whose mantra is “Uniquely real walking football. No running and no contact. Promoting duty of care and increased inclusive participation.” We play indoor walking football, or as we prefer to call it Fast Futsal – a slightly modified version of the game that keeps the ball moving, and we apply a MiniFutsal™ format (smaller pitch) which reduces the temptation to run and focuses play on skill and strategy rather than physical attributes. We also have two rules to reduce the risk of injury: all free kicks are indirect and shoot-
ing is only allowed in the opposition half. The session games are run as a round robin competition each session, with four scratch teams. Our all age sessions are open to any-one: any age, any gender and any ability. However our Wobbly Walking Futsal sessions that are shortly to be launched will offer a very much slower paced game with enhanced respect game rules: no overhead height, re-duced height goals and use of a light-weight ball. Wobbly players must of course be physically capable and med-ically safe but will generally be older (age 60+) and/or perhaps physically/mentally impaired.
Terry Antrobus has been a regular from the very beginning and attends two sessions each week

H ello again. The games are coming thick and fast at this point in the season and I have recently en-
joyed games from Sporting Youth level to the FA Cup 1st Round to see-ing England at Wembley. While I was watching them cruise past Montene-gro I got chatting to the fella sitting next to my mate. Turned out he plays for Claydon – a small SIL world we live in. Watching England qualify with ease from their Euro group against Koso-vo, the highlight for me was seeing Nick Pope getting his first start. Great to see someone who once played for Bury Town now playing for the coun-try. Good to see Tyrone Mings get a start too. I only saw him play once for Ipswich but it was very clear then that he would go on to greater things. What is interesting about these 2 is that they were both rejected young in their careers but kept at it through non-league and lower leagues to now be playing in the Premier League and in the England Squad. A good exam-ple of what can be achieved with perseverance and a bit of self belief. I read a story a while back about a 15 year old girl, Mary Jones, who 200 years ago trekked 26 miles, barefoot, across the Welsh countryside. The reason she did this was because she didn’t have a Bible and she heard that there was someone who could get a copy for her. A story of perseverance but also a story of someone who rec-ognised the importance of the Bible. In the book of Psalms the writer de-

scribes the Bible as ‘a lamp to my feet and a light to my path’. Mary Jones knew that the answers to life’s biggest ques-tion could be found in the Bible, and it could illuminate her way through every day, which is why she considered it such a prize. Don’t forget the Sporting 87 Carol Ser-vice on 6th December, see the details elsewhere in the programme. Be great to see you there for a catch up over car-ols and mince pies, and of course if you don’t have a copy of the Bible and would like one, let me know and I will save you a 26 mile barefoot walk. Enjoy your footy, at whatever level you are involved today. Tim Banks (07734 734573) [email protected] Sporting 87 Chaplain
