Indonesia is a large country that is located between two continents, Asia and Australia. It’s also located between two oceans, the Indian and Pacific oceans. Indonesia represents a highly diverse tropical paradise and archipelago of some 18,000 islands. A nexus of people from all over Asia has produced over 300 unique cultural groups, each with their own language, festivals and elaborate, symbolic rituals. Indonesia encompasses two different ecological regions and is a major juncture of tectonic plates producing an environment of volcanoes and intensely rich terrain. It is well known for its beautiful and exotic beaches, rejuvenating spas, stunning archeological and holy sites, some of the best diving areas in the world, and rare animals like the Komodo Dragon and the famed Orangutan. This complex island archipelago of Indonesia has much to explore and experience for every type of traveler.

Bali, known as the Land of the Gods is prized for its natural beauty. Located just below the equator, 600 miles east of Jakarta and 1000 miles north of Western Australia, the island conjures up the image of friendly people, ancient temples, lush greenery, warm water and high mountain peaks. Inspired by the Balinese culture of rejuvenating the mind and soul, Bali’s stunning white sand beaches, exotic spas and healing ceremonies lure those searching for pure relaxation and serenity. A magical part of Balinese culture everyone should experience are the rituals that include its exotic music, dance and drama. Well known for its world class dive sites, sports enthusiasts will find plenty more to entice them including biking, white water rafting, surfing and mountain hiking.

Java lies southeast of Malaysia and to the west of Bali and the most populated island on earth, but nearly two thirds of the island is in agricultural production. Jakarta is the largest city and capital of Indonesia. Java is the heart of the nation and home to great antiquities and UNESCO sites such as the stupa of Borobudur. Java offers a large and diverse wildlife population including many species of birds, monkeys, butterflies, the one horned rhinoceros and other animals. Yogyakarta is the cultural center of the island with great workshops, the Ramayana Ballet and much more. Biking in the countryside and hiking up mighty Javanese volcanoes such as Mt. Bromo at sunrise are like rites of passage. The island is irresistible with its modern city culture, the splendors of nature, smoking volcanoes, rainforests, and incredible white sand beaches.

INDONESIA, THE EMERALD OF THE EQUATOR

Raj Ampat is by definition, enchanting, beautiful, and magnificent. Located on Papua, the most eastern island of the Indonesian archipelago, it is comprised of 1500 small islands and cays, surrounded by four main islands. It is the ultimate experience for underwater enthusiasts because of its diverse living ecology with 75% of the world’s species found here. Above the water, a variety of bird species exist in the lush tropical jungle, including the rare dancing Bird of Paradise. Friendly Papuan people add to the ambience by offering their distinct hospitality through their dances and songs. With all of the fascinating wonders under and above water, Raja Ampat offers that ultimate serene and intriguing experience most can only dream of.

Komodo Island and part of the Komodo National Park is located in the center of the Indonesian archipelago, between the islands of Sumbawa and Flores. The remarkable and famous Komodo dragon, so called because of its fearsome size and aggressive behavior lives in this area of dry savanna and shrubland. Existing nowhere else in the world, it is the largest living species of lizard, growing up to 10 feet in length. They lure adventurers and scientists alike as they are the last living relic of a species that once populated Australia and Indonesia. Rich coral reefs also are host to a diversity of underwater species including sea turtles, whales, dolphins and dugongs and is popular with divers. Komodo has one of the most starkly contrasting landscapes in Indonesia and provides a rare and compelling experience for nature lovers.

Lombok Island is separated by the Lombok strait from Bali Island in the West. Less visited than Bali, Lombok has no shortage of attractions for water and nature lovers. For hikers, Mount Rinjani, Indonesia’s highest volcano offers an interesting challenge and spectacular views. Beautiful beaches abound and Gili Meno, one of the small Gili Islands surrounding Lombok is defined by white sand beaches and a more secluded feeling. This is another of Indonesia’s famous honeymoon destinations, Gili air is great for families just wanting to relax, swim and enjoy the horse drawn carriages. Traditional village life provides cultural insight and the nearby pink coral beach on the southeast part of the island offer a more remote experience. Lombok shines as a more off the beaten track destination with its untouched nature and is ideal for getting away from it all.

The Kubu reefs are easily accessible from the rocky lava shore, similar to the dive sites in the Tulamben bay area. The reef starts right off the beach in shallow water about 2 – 3 m deep featuring huge pinnacles of glassfish-covered coral heads. Please check for pygmy seahorses (Hippocampus bargibanti) on deepwater gorgonian sea fans (Muricella sp.)! Nearly any kind of reef fish is abundant, schooling species like sawtooth barracudas (Sphyraena putnamiae) or large schools of fairy basslets (Pseudanthias spp.) on the reef flat, but also individuals like large groupers can be seen. Day 5: Menjangan DivingMenjangan Island is famous for having Bali’s most beautiful wall-diving. The underwater topography depends on the exact dive site but most of them start on the island shelf where we tie to a mooring. We will start the dive on the shelf at about 5 meters which is also a great place for snorkeling. This shelf extends out from the island for about 200 meters, then begins to descend at various angles. For the most part the North East of the island gently slopes down to about 40 meters, and the South West features a much more dramatic wall dropping to more than 50 meters.

Day 6: Menjangan DivingEel Garden. This is located at the most western point of Menjangan Island. To navigate, we usually start on the North wall and drift along the west coast to end up in the channel between the mainland of Bali and the island of Menjangan. There can be some current at this dive site and so we recommend that divers with little experience start at some of the other beautiful sites around the island. Due to this current site has fantastic diversity of fish and coral. Good to snorkel as well, this dive site is situated next to the most beautiful virgin beach of the island. This dive site is a must during your stay in West Bali National Park.

Anchor Wreck/Kapal Buldak. Another famous dive site of Menjangan Island is called Kapal Budak, which means Anchor Wreck in Bahasa. It got its name from the large anchor that lies at about 6 meters. At about 33 meters, lies some pieces of a large wooden cargo boat built 150 years ago. Nobody knows the name of the shipwreck or why it is laying on the bottom of this gigantic wall. Some of the remains are still underwater but a lot of them have been taken out by divers. This dive site is actually not renown for the wreck itself, but more for the diversity of the impressive wall. There is a good chance to see Green Turtles at this dive site.
