Welcome to Fenley Field  Welcome to Fenley Field for our first game  in this year’s RFU Intermediate Cup (Midlands).  Today we are delighted to welcome Newark RUFC for  what  we  believe  is  their  first  ever  visit  to Fenley Field. We hope  that  their players, officials and supporters enjoy the day with us. We  are  also  pleased  to welcome match  referee, Ron Hobbs, on an exchange  visit  from  the North 

Midlands Society. We met Ron earlier in the season when he took charge of our game at Kidderminster. Today’s game  is  in the 3rd Round of the  Intermediate Cup, the round of the last 16  in  the Midlands. And we have got  that  far without playing a match! We were awarded a bye in the 1st round and then drawn out of the hat with the  winners  of  the  Huntingdon  and  District/Belgrave  1st  round  tie. Huntingdon beat Belgrave by 22‐11 in that game, but both clubs were found to have fielded un‐registered players – so both were disqualified!  In the 2nd round, Newark lost their tie to Peterborough Lions, going down by 15‐39. But then Peterborough Lions were found to have fielded an ineligible player and they too were disqualified! So  here we  are  in  the  3rd  round  and  both  teams  have  reached  this  stage without winning a game, as Newark also had a bye in the 1st round. We were obviously disappointed to go down to Newbold  in the  league two weeks ago but all eyes are now on  the  return  fixture here on 4th February. The game at Parkfield Road was close and home advantage will probably see us as favourites to reverse the earlier result, given a full strength side.  We got back to winning ways  last Saturday at Pershore and by the time we play current leaders Barkers Butts here on December 3rd, they and Newbold will have met two weeks earlier and the shape of the league will be starting to firm up. Along  the way, grab  the chance  if you can  to have a  look at our 2nds, who currently lead Warwickshire 1. They are playing some superb rugby and well worth your support.

Today’s Visitors 

Newark RUFC Newark can make a  justifiable claim  to be one of the  leading  junior  clubs  in  Notts,  Lincs  and Derbyshire.  The  first  recorded  game  involving  a Newark XV  took place  in 1891 although what we now  know  as Newark RUFC didn’t  formally  come into existence until 1919. 

The club acquired its own ground for the first time in 1947 and still play at the  same  site  in  Kelham  Road,    and  it was  Leicester who  provided  the opposition for its official opening in 1950. 

At Kelham Road, the club boasts four full sized pitches, two equipped with floodlights,  a  feature  which  has  often  made  Newark  the  choice  for representative matches played by the Three Counties.  In addition there is a full range of pitches for Newark’s thriving Mini and Junior set up. 

Over the years, Magnus Grammar School, Newark, has provided a stream of high quality players for the club.   Pre‐eminent amongst them  is Dusty Hare,  who  moved  on  to  Nottingham  before  making  his  name  with Leicester,  England  and  the  British  Lions.  Following  a  similar  route was John Wells, now a leading member of Martin Johnson’s England coaching team. 

Newark arrive here  today with a 100%  league record  in Midlands 2 East (North)  this season. Last Saturday  they passed  their sternest  league  test yet when beating second placed Bakewell Mannerians by 31‐15  to open up an eight point lead over them at the top of the table. So we can expect a tough examination of our credentials today!

1st XV Match Report Midlands 2 West South – Saturday 29th October 

Pershore 10 ‐ Old Laurentians 31 Laurentians had this game sewn up by half time but were made to fight hard by a stubborn and  competitive Pershore  side  in  the  second half before  they  finally  secured a  try bonus point with the last play of the game.  

That  score  was  the  last  of  Simon  Bayliss’s  four  tries  in  another  virtuoso  performance, making it nine tries for OL’s left wing in the five league games he has played this season. OLs had the best of the early exchanges but it was the home side who took the lead with a penalty by Woodhouse  after  ten minutes. OLs  continued  to dominate both  territory  and possession and were duly rewarded after twenty minutes when Bayliss came off his wing to scythe through under the posts after Iain Wallis and Dom Hammond had set up the position. Danny Orr converted and OLs were 7‐3 up.  After twenty minutes play, Orr and Wallis combined cleverly in midfield to set up Bayliss for his  second,  Orr  adding  the  conversion  for  14‐3.  OLs  backs  were  displaying much more menace than their opposite numbers and looking for opportunities to give Bayliss his head. The  next  arose  after  a  strong  run  down  the  right  by  Danny Murch  before  the  ball was transferred smartly down the  line for Bayliss to go over. Orr converted and OLs were 21‐3 ahead at the break. When Orr added a penalty early in the second half, OLs were virtually out of sight. But the big Pershore pack then took over, employing a pick and drive game that tested OL’s defence for much of  the half. But  the home side couldn’t  find any chinks  in OL’s defence until  the twenty fifth minute when Shaw muscled over, Woodhouse converting to reduce the margin to 24‐10. 

When OLs countered, a powerful break by Chris le Poidevin was carried on by Ben Anderson who transferred to Orr near the Pershore line, but scrambling defence just got back to deny OL’s fly half the try. OLs forced a 5 metre scrum but Pershore’s blind side snaffled the ball from a position  that  looked suspiciously offside and set up a counter attack  that was  just held. 

Next Greg  Loydall, on as a  replacement  for his  league debut, was denied a  try when  the home touch judge decided he had put a foot in touch on his way to the line, a decision that bemused nearby spectators! 

OLs were still on the back foot for long periods as the home pack continued their assault but broke out again to win a scrum outside the Pershore 22. Possession was quick and the ball went swiftly down the  line  for Bayliss to  finish and claim the bonus point that had almost eluded OLs, Orr converting with his fifth successful kick from five attempts. Team:  Ben Wiles; Grant Inch, Danny Murch, Iain Wallis, Simon Bayliss; Danny Orr, Ricky Reed; Ollie Cowley,  Dom  Hammond.  Chris  le  Poidevin,  Paul  Willis  (capt.),  Ben  Anderson,  James Orbinson, Ben O’Riordan, Carl Adams.

Sundry Stuff Family Affairs Is  this  unique?  Last  Saturday,  the  3rd  team  that played Southam 2s  included three  father and son combos  – unusual,  if not unique,  in OL’s history, surely.  Turning  out  for  the  team were  Peter  and Liam Rigg, Dave and Craig Middleton and Adie and Ryan Cleaver.  The  team  clearly wasn’t weakened by  their  inclusion  (the  dads, we mean!)  as  they won! The burning question is – can Daz Price make it through to turn out with son Danny, one of the bright  stars  in  OL’s  minis?  We  await  Tim Chambers’  report  on  the  match  with  particular interest! How did that happen? In  the  absence  of  Arwel  Jones  in  New  Zealand, pitch line‐marking responsibilities have been taken on  by  a  number  of well meaning,  but  less  than gifted,  amateurs  (by  Arwel’s  standards!)  There were two home games scheduled for last Saturday and  both  pitches  needed  marking  up.  So  Mike Warwick  and  Keith  Baxter  agreed  with  your correspondent  that  all  three  would  meet  up  at 9.00 on  the Saturday morning  to do  the needful. But Mike managed to get down to Fenley Field on Friday afternoon, intending to make a start, and 

 shortly  after  arriving  made  a  phone  call  to  the writer  proclaiming  ‘it’s  a  miracle!’  Struggling  to make  any  sense  of  his  breathless  utterings,  I eventually  got  him  to  explain  that  the  ‘miracle’ was  the  fact  that  the  pitches  were  already beautifully marked out! On further investigation it became  clear  that,  despite  only  returning  from New Zealand late on Wednesday, Arwel had made it up to the club on Friday morning and white lined the  pitches.  Now  is  that  not  the  ultimate  in dedication!? Flag of Covenience! Talking of Arwel’s dedication, such was his desire not to miss any of Wales’ games at the RWC, and to catch as many others as possible, that he went so  far  as  to  join  the  England  Rugby  Supporters Club  to make  sure he could get all  the  tickets he wanted! So that’s why he jumped! Aficionados of Facebook should go to Sian Jenkins page  (Mrs  PJ)  to  see  a  photo  of her posing with Steve  Thompson  and  Manu  Tuilagi  on  a  ferry bound for Auckland, after England’s exit from the World Cup. We know what happened next!

The Midlands Two Scene After  6  league  games,  Barkers  Butts  are  now  the  only  side with  a  100%  record  in Midlands 2 West (S), Newbold surprisingly  losing theirs  in a 25‐8 reverse at Silhilians last Saturday. Sils had been progressing nicely,  losing  just  two  so  far, but nothing  in their record to date suggested the sort of upset they pulled off against Bold. Berkswell & Balsall have already moved up to fourth bottom, despite the 15 point penalty they brought into the season. They have a W5, L1 record and would be in fourth but for the points  deduction.  Relegated Banbury  are  having  an  indifferent  season  so  far,  going down by a surprisingly large margin, 3‐45, at home to Leamington last week. Ditto for Droitwich, who have won just two from six so far and, with Banbury, appear already to be losing touch with the leading group. Upton on Severn, who came up with Newbold this  season having beaten  them  to  the championship of Midlands 3 W  (S),  recorded their first win last weekend, a 46‐5 hammering of Cheltenham North, who are winless at the bottom of the table with just one bonus point to their name. Our fixtures have so  far  lagged Newbold’s by  a week or  two  and  that  continues when we both meet Barkers within  two weeks  of  each  other  in  late  November/early  December.  Those games will be critical for all three as the halfway mark of the season is approached. 

 

Local Club News Rugby Lions continue to dominate National 3 Midlands but clearly struggled to impose themselves on lowly Newport last Saturday, pulling away to win 26‐6 with two second half  tries.  They have  yet  to meet  any of  the other  sides  in  the  top  five  –  it will be interesting  to see how  they go when  that happens.   Broadstreet  recorded  just  their second win two weeks ago but are still in the bottom three in the same league.  There  is  an  interesting  local  derby  scheduled  today when Newbold  entertain  Long Buckby in the Intermediate Cup. They clashed at a similar stage in the Senior Vase last season,  Bold  taking  the  honours  then.  Both  were  promoted  from Midlands  3  last season  but Buckby  are  feeling  the  strain with  just  one win  from  six  and  bottom  in Midlands 2 East (S).  Third in the same league are Lutterworth, who are also going well in the Intermediate Cup and today face Tamworth in the 3rd round. Now climbing the table in Midlands 3 East (S) are Rugby St Andrews, winning their last three, a sequence which  included  a  surprisingly  large win  over  the  then  leaders, Northampton  BBOB. Rugby Welsh are  just about holding  their own  in Midlands 4 West, having won  two from five so far and now out of the bottom three. Kenilworth have fallen on really hard times and, having been relegated to Midlands 1 West for this season, are now bottom of that league. They did record their second win from nine games last week, edging Camp Hill by 33‐32 but are still a point behind that side.  The previous week they gave Bedworth just their second win when going down by 30‐50, a  remarkable score  line. Promoted with Bedworth were Dunlop, and after two successive promotions the Coventry club are finding it tough in this league. Dunlop also have  just two wins against their name and a  large, negative points difference of 204.  Sutton  Coldfield  and Bournville  lead  the way  in  the  league,  each with  a  100% record.
