Old Laurentian RFCOfficial programme 2011-12
Programme£3
Welcome to Fenley Field A very warm welcome to Fenley Field today for ‘The Big One’!
We are delighted to welcome the players, officials and supporters of Newbold‐on‐Avon RFC for a triple header of matches.
We are also pleased to welcome today’s 1st XV match referee, Stuart Heaton of the Warwickshire Society; and also to offer a warm welcome and grateful thanks to today’s match ball sponsor, Roger Cole.
We are also pleased to welcome the officials for the 2nd and 3rd XV games. Phil Everitt and Dick Hobley respectively
Matches against the Bold are always crucial, regardless of context, as local bragging rights are at stake. But today’s result will go a long way towards deciding the season’s final outcome for both clubs. A win for Bold and they would leapfrog us up to 2nd in the league. A win for OLs could open up a lead of 5 or 6 points for us over Bold and we would climb to 2nd place. It’s that tight at the top!
Barkers Butts have all but sewn up the league championship so the race is on for the second, play off, spot. Barkers recorded their second win of the season over Bold last week and we face them next Saturday. We surprised them by pulling off a very good win at home last December, so we can go into the match at Pickford Grange Lane with genuine optimism.
The second XV game today offers a similarly exciting scenario. It is being played as both a league game in Warwickshire 1 and as a Clonmell Cup tie. As Clonmell Cup holders, our 2nds won’t be relinquishing that honour easily; and they are vying with Bold and Broadstreet for top spot in the league. OLs won the earlier league encounter at Parkfield Road; but then Bold put us out of the Warwickshire 2nd XV Cup at Fenley Field just two weeks later! So a tight and competitive match is in prospect.
When it comes to the third XVs, Newbold definitely have the edge in the form book, as they are challenging hard for the Warwickshire 3 title with OLs down near the bottom. But our 3rds have won 9 and drawn 1 of their 15 games since losing narrowly to Bold in October so could be in the mood to surprise their rivals!

Today’s Visitors Newbold‐On‐Avon RFC
Newbold need absolutely no introduction, given that they have been in existence as a club for 118 years and are based barely 3 miles from Fenley Field!
Their fame as a rugby football club was once widespread and at one time it was not unusual for the likes of Coventry and Leicester to be
visiting Parkfield Road, their home since 1957. Newbold’s golden years were during the 1960s, 70s and 80s, but they were always perceived to be a ‘junior’ club and could never obtain the recognition that their history, fixture list and results suggested they deserved.
Their recent history parallels OLs quite closely. In the last fifteen years, both clubs have played in the top tier of regional rugby (Now National 3 Midlands); and both have spent a number of years over the last decade in what is now Midlands One. We first lost that status in 2006; then Bold joined us after relegation two years later.
Then in 2010 our paths diverged, but for just one season. After enduring a dire campaign, Newbold slipped down to Midlands 3; and we earned promotion via the play‐off to Midlands One. Bold enjoyed an outstanding season in Midlands 3 West (S) – and we enjoyed a tough one in Midlands 1. The result – after just one year’s absence from Midlands 2, here we are again, reunited!
Not only did they enjoy a fine league season last year, but Bold almost scaled the ultimate peak in national cup rugby. Having won the EDF Senior Vase in the Midlands they travelled to Littleborough in Lancashire to challenge the home club for a place in the national Final – at Twickenham. Sadly, they lost, but promotion went some way to compensate for it.
In the last two years, Bold have recruited some quality players to join the hardcore of talent already at the club – Phil Reed, Lloyd Warner, Glenn Bond and James McGill amongst others.
Earlier this season, Bold caught us napping at Parkfield Road and beat us fairly and squarely by 17‐11. Home advantage lies with us today – can we make it tell?

1st XV Match Report Midlands 2 West (South) ‐ Saturday 10th March, 2012
Old Laurentians 20 ‐ Upton upon Severn 8
Hit by injuries and non‐availability, OLs were forced into a number of changes for this match against an Upton side who had unexpectedly pulled off a narrow win in the earlier league fixture between the two. The situation was made worse when scrum half Luke Harris suffered a serious shoulder injury after just 20 minutes of another close encounter.
Upton started well and their lively backs threatened in the opening exchanges, but OLs began to find some rhythm to launch their first serious attack after ten minutes, forcing a penalty which Jon Bean put over, followed two minutes later with a second successful kick for a 6‐0 lead.
Upton got three points back when Heeley kicked a penalty after twelve minutes as neither side was able to establish a clear superiority, although OL’s pack were beginning to gain the upper hand in the forward battle.
After Harris had left the field, centre Iain Wallis moving in to take over scrum half duties, Upton surprised OLs with an opportunist try. A well‐directed kick from stand‐off Keyte bounced unkindly for the covering defence and obligingly for Upton’s right wing Ayres, who went over. The try was unconverted, but Upton now led by 8‐6 after thirty minutes.
OLs were now showing some good touches but not managing to string them together to produce a sustained threat to the Upton line, thwarted by a well organised defence. Then a long and dangerous run down the left by Ben Roberts took them close, before Upton regained possession and lifted a steepling kick out of defence.
It was well taken by Troy Owen, who counter attacked strongly to set up a maul near the Upton line, Wallis sniped round the fringe and created the opening for Andy Orbinson to go over under the posts. Bean added the extra points to restore OL’s lead at 13‐8 as the half time whistle sounded.
As the second half unwound, Upton’s earlier efforts began to take their toll as OL’s pack assumed control of the forward battle, regularly disrupting the visitors’ possession in the tight and winning quality lineout possession. Twenty minutes in and a slashing break by Bean should have produced a score but good scrambling defence got back to catch Ben Wiles short of the line.
The second half remained scoreless for thirty minutes before number 8 Jack Boulden drove over the gain line from the base of a scrum to create half an opening that Bean exploited skilfully and the fly half drew the last defender before sending Simon Bayliss on his way to the line, Bean added the goal points and OLs played out the remaining time without alarm to claim a vital win. Sundry Stuff OLs Minis If you can make it along tomorrow morning (Sunday 18th) you can enjoy a feast of mini rugby when OLs take on their counterparts from Broadstreet. It would be great to see some victories over ‘Street as we are struggling to record any at senior level this season! At time of writing it is reported that Rugby Lions mini section has folded – confirmation is being sought for what appears to be more than a rumour. If so, it could mean a further surge in OL’s Mini membership, to follow their terrific growth in numbers over the last 2½ seasons. In recognition of this growth, and the development of the section in so many other ways, the senior club nominated the Mini section for the ‘Club of the Year’ award in Rugby Sports Awards 2012. We are delighted to report that they have been shortlisted for the award and representatives of the section will be waiting with bated breath for the announcement of the winners at the presentation evening on Weds. 28th March.
VPs Away Day The VPs Away Day will be next Saturday, 24th March, at Barkers Butts. When we fixed this date way back in September, we had no inkling that it could be one of the key games of the season with a lot hanging on the result. After the excellent win over Barkers at home in December – one of only two defeats they have suffered this season – we travel with hopes high for a repeat. The coach will leave the Fighting Cocks at 12.00 midday, lunch will be served at 1.30 and we will be leaving Barkers for the return trip at about 6.00pm. See Alan Willis to reserve your place. Cyclist turned scrum half One to watch is the 3rd XV scrum half Ben Roach. With 9 tries so far for the 3rds he is one of the discoveries of the season. But he might have embarked on a professional cycling career such has been his prowess in the field of cyclo‐cross, and he was the U23 winner of the National Trophy Cyclo‐Cross Series, 2010/11.

Midlands 2 and Elsewhere It’s getting mighty tight at the top of the league – behind Barkers Butts, that is! They have the championship pretty well sewn up, so the race is on for 2nd place and the promotion play‐off. On page 8 of this programme you will see a table that Ray Todd has compiled with the remaining fixtures for the top five clubs in the league – any one of those currently placed 2nd down to 5th could clinch that second place. Of course, Newbold and OLs have a game in hand on the rest – today’s! The winners will be in 2nd place by 5.00 this evening and in pole position with four league games remaining. Droitwich effectively ended Leamington’s chances with their 15‐12 win on the latter’s ground last Saturday. Since the turn of the year, the Worcestershire side have lost just one of seven games played ‐ to Barkers. Berkswell & Balsall would be clear in 2nd spot today, but for that 15 point deduction, although their form has faltered a little of late, including a loss to Pershore at the end of February. At the bottom, Cheltenham North and Pershore are favourites for the drop, although Kidderminster are not out of danger by any means. Elsewhere, Rugby Lions continued their all‐conquering progress in National 3 Midlands when comfortably disposing of one of their nearest challengers, South Leicester. In Midlands 2 East (S), Lutterworth saw off Long Buckby by a comfortable 48‐13. Lutts stay in 2nd, Buckby will be relegated after just one season in this league. At the top of Midlands 1 West, Sutton Coldfield cannot claim the title just yet as Bournville won’t be shaken off in 2nd, just 5 points behind. But the 3rd club, Halesonians, are 30 points behind Sutton! Nothing changes at the bottom – Dunlop and Bedworth have been completely out of their depth throughout and will come straight back down to Midlands 2. Just above them, one of Kenilworth, Whitchurch and Ludlow will join them in the drop.
Caption Competition! Just for a bit of fun, we thought we would give OLs, Newbold and any impartial (if there is such a thing) spectators the chance to win a bottle of wine by coming up with a caption for this photo of the Reedo brothers. Maybe something like.. “even the ref thinks Phil’s boots are a funny colour!” Email your entries by this Thursday night to: [email protected] and we’ll publish the winner on our website next weekend … and we’ll make sure the bottle finds its way to the best entry. Good luck!
