SBTJS Jam SetsNOV. 27, 2016
TUESDAY, DEC. 6, 2016
October 23rd was another fun filled afternoon. Zinfandel Stompers and our
Jammers kept the dance floor filled. Super nice sounds came from a wonder-
ful group of musicians playing trombones. Zinfandel Stompers had some great
vocals with three part harmony. Cheri Howard had the raffle table decorated for
Halloween with spooky good prizes. It’s time to renew memberships for 2017.
Membership is the backbone of our organization. Each membership is vital to the
cause of keeping South Bay alive and well. For more frolicking fun and good Trad
Jazz be sure to be with us November 27th when Toot Sweet Jazz Band will play for
us. See you then.

RHYTHM STREETAPPLE JACKS
Most members surely remember that our
goal is to keep alive our favorite kind of
music, and there is a board member, Jim
O'Briant, whose duty it is to scout out
probable teenagers whom we can help
attend summer jazz camp sessions. Ed
Ford was one of those youngsters we
paid jazz camp tuition for, and he is now
the leader of The Applejacks. This is
what he has to say about his band that
we’re proud to present: “In a secret San
José lair, the Rhythm Street Applejacks
distill classic jazz styles that once poured
out from dance halls and juke joints of
the 1920s and 1930s. With a love of
rhythm and simple melodies, the
Applejacks bring the infectious joy of
classic swing to contemporary audiences
in Silicon Valley.”

Thursday the twins, Ambassadors of FUN, Mary and Carol
volunteered as hosts at Addie Street venue on the board-
walk, dressed in our colorful outfits with feather boas and
parasols. Parasols were provided at each venue. Regbone Saints
was the opening band at Addie Street on Friday. They are
from San Luis Obispo and celebrate a traditional jazz com-
mon to the streets, bars and back alleys of New Orleans. Molly
Reeves, leader of the Red Skunk Band, was swingin', sponta-
neous, spunky and exceedingly entertaining, drawing inspira-
tion from the styles of Django Reinhardt, Fats Waller, Louie
Armstrong as well as more contemporary influences. Howard
Miyata who plays trombone in the High Sierra Jazz Band
played his fluegelhorn in different bands. You ask! “What is a
fluegelhorn?” It's a combination of a trombone and a tuba and
looks like a complicated trumpet with several coils. George's
All-Stars played only one set and were fantastic. The band
members were: Larry Scala, Jason Warner, Nate Ketner, Bob
Schultz, Katie Cavera, Danny Coots, Brandon Au and Sam
Rocha.
Nicolle Roth, a 17 year old, sang with Night Blooming Jazzmen
and also performs tap dance routines. Her dad, Brad Roth
plays banjo and guitar with Night-Blooming Jazzmen.
Another 17 year old up-and-coming performer, Washboard
Steve of San Luis Obispo was asked to sit in with a few of the
bands to perform. We twins had become his friends at the Hot
Jazz festival in Sacramento over Labor Day. We connected
Sunday when we enjoyed having a few dances with him and
especially doing the Country Western 10-step to the Orange
Blossom Special played by Tom Rigney and Flambeau.
This was the first time High Street from Nampa, Idaho has
performed at the Pismo Beach Jubilee. This band had people
dancing in the aisles on the front of the stage. Everybody from
young to old, was up moving to this beat. Sue Palmer Motel
Swing Orchestra was really hot Saturday night. April West,
was seen playing the trombone slide with her toe sitting on the
edge of the stage. Since it was Halloween weekend, many
attendees were in costume.
Guest artists this weekend were: Jeff Barnhart, Kristy Cocuzzi,
Danny Coots, Bob Draga, Marty Eggers, Jeff Hamilton, Carl
Sonny Leyland, Larry Scala, and Bob Schulz. Other bands at
the festival were: Blue Street, Cal Poly University Jazz Band,
Carl Sonny Leyland Trio, Clam Chowder from Pismo Beach,
Cornet Chop Suey, Creole Syncopators from Central Coast,
Crescent Katz, Cuesta Jazz Ensemble, San Luis Obispo, Dos
Pueblos High School Jazz Band, High Sierra Jazz Band, Ivory
and Gold, Jazz Jammers with Dick Williams, Judity and the
Jazz Krewe, Central Coast, Maria Muldaur and her Jazz Quin-
tet, The Midiri Brothers, Night Blooming Jazzmen, Pacific
Swing, Pat Yankee, San Francisco, Red Skunk, New Orleans,
Royal Garden Swing Orchestra, Ulysses Jazz, Santa Barbara.
As usual, more music than anyone could possible see and hear
in 3½ days. It’s only a 3 hour drive from San Jose so think of
attending next year and even try sponsoring a band. These
Festivals need all the help they can get. New directors Jeff and
Rhonda Cardinal did an exceptional job!

BLOWIN’ round the bay
TOOT SWEET JAZZ BAND
T oot Sweet was founded in 1990 by John Bria, a versatile
clarinet and saxophone player, who was well-known in
the Bay Area. His enthusiasm for “our kind of music”
continues to radiate from the members of today’s band, long
after his untimely passing. Our players (both regulars and
some darn good subs when needed) enjoy each other’s
musicianship, and we have a lot of fun playing for our
audiences (we’re not faking it!).
Dancing is an increasingly popular activity at jazz society
functions everywhere; so we strive to optimize our mix of
tunes to fully accommodate both our dancers and our listeners..
As far as we know, we’re the only trad-jazz band in the area
that will provide music for a range of Latin dance steps.
Our members are: Larry Blake-trumpet, Ray Buhler-clarinet,
Jack Gerken-trombone, Scott Chapman-piano, Pat Dutrow-
banjo and guitar, Dan Mueller-drums and Paul Bostwick-tuba.
