Special Purpose Lamps
Projector Lamp
Lamp in which the luminous element is so mounted that the lamp may be used with anoptical system projecting the light in chosen direction
Projection Lamp
Lamp in which the luminous element is of relatively concentrated form and is somounted that the lamp may be used with an optical system for the projection of either still or motion pictures on a screen
Photo Flood Lamp
Incandescent lamp of especially high colour temperature, often of the reflector type, for lighting objects to be photographed

TRAINING DEPARTMENT
Day Light Lamp
Lamp giving light with a spectral energy distribution approximating that of a specifieddaylight
Infrared Lamp
Lamp which radiates especially strongly in the infrared, the visible radiation produced, if any, not being of direct interest
Ultraviolet lamp
Lamp which radiates especially strongly in the ultravoilet, the visible radiation produced,if any, not being of direct interest
Study about Operational condition of the Lamps
Rated Luminous Flux
The value of the initial luminous flux of a given type of lamp declared by themanufacturer, lamp being operated under specified conditions
Rated Power
The value of the power of a given type of lamp declared by the manufacturer, lamp beingoperated under specified conditions
Life of a lamp
The total time for which a lamp has been operated before it becomes useless,or isconsidered to be so according to specified criteria
Life Test
Test in which lamps are operated under specified conditions for a specified period or tothe end of life and during which photometric and electrical measurements may be madeat specified interavels
Average life

TRAINING DEPARTMENT
The average of the individual lives of the lamps subjected to life test, the lamps beingoperated under specified conditions and the end of life judged according to specifiedcriteria.
Lamp Voltage
The voltage between the electrodes of the lamps during stable operating conditions
Starting Time ( of an Arc Discharge Lamp)
The time required for an arc discharge lamp to develop an electrically stable arcdischarge, the lamp being operated under specified conditions and the time beingmeasured from the moment its circuit is energised
Study about Components of Lamps
Luminous Element
The part of a lamp which emits light
Filament
Thread like conductor, usually of tungsten, which is heated to
incandescence by the passage of an electric current.
BulbTransparent or translucent gas tight envelope enclosing the luminous
elements(s)
Cap: Base
The Part of a lamp which provides comnnection to the electrical supply bymeans of a lamp holder or lamp connector and ,in most cases, also serves to retain thelamp in the lamp holder
Pin: Post
Piece of metal, usually of cylindrical shape, fixed at the end of the cap soas to engage in the corresponding hole in a lamp holder for fixing the cap for makingcontact
Lamp holder

TRAINING DEPARTMENT
A device which holds the lamp in position, usually by having the capinserted in it, in which case it also provides the means of connecting the lamps to theelectrical supply.
Main Electrode (of a Discharge lamp)
Electrode through which the discharge current passes after the dischargehas been stabilized
Starter
A starting device, usually for florescent lamps which provides for thenecessary preheating of the electrodes and, in combination with the series impedance of the ballast, causes a surge in the voltage applied to the lamp
Ignitor
A device intended, either by itself or in combination with other components to generate voltage pulses to start a discharge lamp without providing for the pre-heating the electrodes.
Ballast
A device connected between the supply and one or more dischargelamps which serve mainly to limit the current of the lamps.
Ballast may also include means for transforming the supply voltage, correcting the power factor and, either alone or in combination with a starting device, provide the necessary conditions for starting the lamps
Dimmer
A device in the electric circuit for varying the luminous flux from lamps ina lighting installation
