Optimal Wellness is a state o being. When someone asks “How are you?”

we might reply “I eel good” – we look at wellness as the way we eel, but itisn’t about eeling: it’s about being . You can have the physical capacity to do

something without eeling the energy to do it. For example, this morning I

didn’t eel like working out at 6:30, but 10 minutes into it I elt great. Optimal

Wellness isn’t an arrival, or a destination point. I would dene Optimal

Wellness like this:

Physically, it is having the vitality and energy to do the things you need

and love to do.

Emotionally, it is when our lives are lled with positive emotions – love, gratitude, orgiveness, acceptance. It’s really an Optimal Wellness response you

are having to both external and internal conditions.

Spiritually, it is being connected to God and His purposes or your lie.

Optimal Wellness in my opinion is the highest quality o lie a person can live

as it does not depend on external conditions or eelings in the way you live

your lie. It is internally driven.

As our TriVita community knows, we advocate practicing the 10 Essentials

daily to help people live more joyul lives through better physical, emotional

and spiritual health (see page 2). This is the oundation we use to build OptimalWellness. Optimal Wellness means elevating the state you’re in. You might

think o it as a variation on the Army slogan, “Be all you can be.” But my

version, my denition o Optimal Wellness, is “Being all you can be.”

July marks TriVita’s 11th year o helping people on theirwellness journeys, and it’s a year sparked with tremendousexcitement. The VitaJournal is privileged to eature this

interview with CEO Michael Ellison as he shares his personalperspectives on: “Optimal Wellness.”

t 10 enti?

In pursuit o Optimal Wellness, there should be a

plan… a plan or you to receive something we all

need every day. The 10 Essentials are a road mapto get you to Optimal Wellness. Perhaps this is a

huge concept or people to accept but they are

the essentials to wellness. Do you realize that

nine o the 10 Essentials are about nurturing? O

course, it’s vital or us to receive all the nutrients

our physical bodies need; most people do not get

them rom ood, so that is why we oer targeted

nutrition through our nutritional products. But

the larger question is, “How do I nurture mysel every day so I have the health and wellness to

ulll my lie purposes?” The 10 Essentials are

there to guide you.

h i n n

v t ?

Absolutely. My views are much more ocused on

the nurturing, emotional side o wellness now. I’ve

come to understand the signicant role that

positive emotion plays in our wellness, includingour physical wellness. For example, i your lie is

lled with anger or hostility, this creates a

chemical imbalance in the body. It weakens the

cells, and sets us up or illness. Or look at the

impact o stress. Stress can lead to overeating,

which leads to obesity, which we know contrib-

utes to so many health problems.

Remember, we’re not human doings, but human

beings. Optimal Wellness is about nding

and living in that state o being where you

nurture yoursel.

h xin in TiVit

t vi n?

I recognize how challenging it is to lead people

in changing their attitudes and behaviors.

We in North America have been infuenced

signicantly by a “treatment mentality”: I youhave a health problem, you go to a doctor and

take a pill. Please understand: I think healthcare

proessionals are important, and provide vital

services or us all. But ask almost anyone in the

medical community what the solution is to our

current health crisis, and they’ll tell you that the

answer is living healthier: getting the nutrients

and nurturing that we need physically, emotion-

ally and spiritually.

When we live the 10 Essentials, we can be

internally-driven to make the best choices or

ourselves. Without the sel-nurturing rom the

10 Essentials, we remain externally-driven, and

subject to outside infuences. Food marketers, or

example, are brilliant at using our appetites or

sugar, salt and at. But these things in excess do

not promote Optimal Wellness. So, we have toidentiy something that’s bigger than those

appetites, something that will motivate people to

change their attitude and behaviors towards

wellness and give themselves a higher quality o

lie. Maybe that “something” is your children or

grandchildren, or example. They’re important to

you, so you’ll do the things that give you Optimal

Wellness so you can be with them, doing the

things they love to do while being an example or

their quality o lie.

TiVit bn n t nt t

ivin . d tt bin

titin?

Yes, but my greatest satisaction is all the phone

calls, emails and letters I receive rom people who

have their “Aha!” moment. That’s when they

realize that the 10 Essentials are so simple yet so

powerul. They begin to embrace them, bystarting with a product like Nopalea™, or

example. As it helps lower infammation and

raises their quality o lie, they’re motivated to

do more or themselves, to nurture themselves

by integrating more o the 10 Essentials into

their daily lives.

wn ni n i ,

tt n v t ?

Today, I can say that my lie purpose has changed

in its expression, but not the core. I’ve travelled

the world and seen the poorest o human condi-

tions, and those experiences touch my heart and

soul. Since I was a little boy, I’ve elt compassion

or the suering o others, and so humanitari-

anism has always been and will be a part o my

lie. But today, helping people have quality

nutraceutical products and the inormation

to inspire and support their practice o the10 Essentials or Optimal Wellness living is

the expression o my lie purpose.

w’v t “t n

n.” h t nnt?

When I use the phrase “wealth and wellness,” I’m

not talking about wealth or opulent living. I’m

talking about wealth as having the resources

necessary to ulll your lie purpose. I believe lie

purpose wealth, which includes relationships and

money, is available to every person, at any age. I

you don’t have purpose, you really don’t need

wealth or wellness.

wt n v t nj

oti wn?

Practice the 10 Essentials. Remember, this doesn’tmean you won’t have a setback rom time to time,

and it isn’t about arriving at an “ultimate” place. It means you’re giving yoursel the vitality andenergy needed to ulll your lie purpose, tooptimize your internally-driven lie.

wt bt t oti wn b ?

Everything centers around attitudes and behav-iors, and how we respond to external infuences. The key is awareness: i we’re aware o these

infuences, then we can be internally driven byour values and our purpose. The greatest insightyou can have about yoursel is to see the di er-ence between external and internal infuences.

wt n tt ik t

bt oti wn?

It’s not a destination – it’s a journey. It’s not abouteeling – it’s about being.

It’s about being connected to those things thatare important in helping you ulll your liepurpose. It’s about lling your lie each day withvitality and energy rom proper nutrients andnurturing, and eeling connected to God or Hispurpose or your lie. I you have all this, you haveOptimal Wellness.

Let me be clear about just what the issueis: when surgery involves the use o nitrousoxide, or “laughing gas,” i a doctor or dentistis unaware that the patient has a B-12 dei-ciency, the results could be disastrous. Nitrous

oxide (chemically, N2O) is oten used to reducepain and serve as an anesthetic during surgi-cal and dental procedures. Its ability to makepeople eel euphoric and “giggly” also makes ita popular substance or abuse. In either case,an unusual side eect o nitrous oxide is that itactually inactivates B-12 in the body.

That’s right: laughing gas can actually strip yourmind and body o the beneits o B-12. In some

cases, this can lead to nerve and brain damage, mental conusion and even trouble perormingsuch simple physical acts as walking. So, i yourB-12 levels are too low, or you have troubleabsorbing B-12 and aren’t aware o it, no matter

how healthy you are otherwise, surgery couldhave serious and unintended results.

This isn’t a new inding. As documented in thebook Could It Be B-12? by Sally Pacholok, R.N.and Jerey Stuart, D.O., the connection with

nitrous oxide was known decades ago.The authors quote noted neurosurgeonsas saying, “N2O is very dangerous in theB-12-deicient patient. Because B-12 deiciencyis not uncommon and N2O use is widespread, the potential exists in every (surgical) practiceor this complication to occur.”

a - “t” i n tin

Even when surgeons or dentists are alert to

the potential problem o nitrous oxide andB-12 deiciency, the preventive step they mighttake might be ineective. Some medicalproessionals, trying to avoid possible damagerom nitrous oxide to a B-12-deicient patient,

give a B-12 injection beore a procedure. However, this won’t be o much help to some-one with a severe deiciency who is exposed tonitrous or an extended time, or to someonewhose low level o B-12 may have contributedto their need or a procedure in the irst place.

Unortunately, screening or B-12 deicienciesbeore procedures isn’t common. Even moreunortunately, the medical literature containsmany cases o B-12-deicient patients whowere given nitrous oxide, and ater theirprocedures suered mental impairment, paralysis, numbness or memory problems.

What might be the answer? Certainly, i youor a loved one is acing a procedure and youknow or suspect a B-12 deiciency, insist onan anesthetic other than nitrous oxide; thereare several alternatives available. But why nottake care o the deiciency beorehand, and giveyoursel all the beneits o B-12?

I you or a loved one may not get all the B-12

needed rom ood, I encourage you to look intoB-12 supplementation with TriVita’s qualityproducts. With so much at stake when levelso B-12 are low, why not give yoursel thehealthy advantage?

oday’s modern surgical methods can be a lie-saving or lie-enhancingadvantage to so many people, but there are risks. As you probablyknow, no surgery is risk-ree, no matter how “minor” it might be. But

did you know that low levels o the powerhouse Vitamin B-12 could add tothat risk? This is important inormation or you and anyone you care or whena surgical procedure is scheduled.

Summer may be synonymous with outdoor

heat cramps, heat exhaustion, heat stroke – andsometimes even death. From 1979-2003, exces-sive heat exposure led to 8,015 deaths in theUnited States. That’s more deaths rom heatexposure than rom hurricanes, lightning, tornadoes, foods and earthquakes combined.

Like so many people, TriVita

employees have experienced

remarkable results with Nopalea.

This month, Jackie Phillips in the

Like the other Wellness Consultants who helpTriVita Members, Jackie spends most o herworkdays talking on the phone. And beore Nopalea, that wasn’t always so easy.

“I n ni ntn itt tkin n bt.”

“I’m on the phone all day talking with peopleabout TriVita products, and because o abreathing condition I’ve had or over twodecades I always had to take a breath to be ableto nish a sentence. Ater taking Nopalea, though, I noticed that my lung capacity hasgreatly increased. I was delighted to realize thatI could talk more easily. Now, I can nish asentence without taking a second breath. This

was a new and wonderul experience!”

Easier breathing wasn’t the only happy result Jackie experienced rom Nopalea. For years,

she had problems with infamed, painul joints and muscles, and swollen ankles.“I I did a little bit o exercise, my muscleswould ache so much it would keep me up atnight,” she reports. “I couldn’t do the simplesthousehold chores, like mopping a foor, withoutsuering rom muscle and joint pain. As aresult, I wasn’t sleeping well. And being in painall the time just robs you o your joy.”

That all changed ater Nopalea, though.

“Ater I started drinking Nopalea every day,the muscle and joint pain stopped, and theswelling in my ankles went away. I can walkmore quickly without being short o breath.I can now exercise all I want without earo pain,” she says.

Jackie is thrilled about her Nopalea results (youcan hear it in her voice), and doesn’t hesitate toshare the good news with others. “Several o myamily members take Nopalea with greatsuccess,” she relates. She’s thrilled, too, aboutworking with a company whose products havehelped so many on their own wellness journeys.

And, Jackie also enjoys additional benetsrom other TriVita products.

“When I began working at TriVita I startedlearning what great nutritional supplementscan do or optimal health,” she says. She startedo with Sublingual B-12, and her new energywas “amazing – I elt like crying, crying or joyor the new me.” Jackie has also had great resultswith OmegaPrime® and CoEnzyme Q-10.

All in all, joining TriVita has truly changed Jackie’s lie or the better. “Beore comingto work here, I elt like I was 90 years old, butnow I am just 65 eelinglike 50. I eel so muchhealthier and have somuch more zest. I thankthe Lord or MichaelEllison and TriVita.”

Agave nectar as a sweetener

T it v

What does science say aboutagave as a sweetener? First, let’s take a look at how

agave has been used historically. We

can go back several hundred years tothe Aztecs and other MesoamericanIndians who would use agave syrupinternally and externally to help ghto inections, to help end o bacteriathat might get into external wounds, and to help bolster digestion and tosettle the stomach.

Bnt v

The benets o agave syrup have been studied inmodern times: For example, agave nectar wasstudied regarding its impact on cholesterol.Cholesterol may have a bad rap but it is anormal, natural part o human metabolism.

In act, we need cholesterol, but not an overpro-duction o cholesterol which happens because o stress, when our immune system is disruptedand when our hormone systems are disrupted. It turns out that when we take agave, ourcholesterol level goes down, indicating thatit’s actually benecial or our immune system,it’s benecial as a stress reducer and it’s benecialin helping us balance our hormones. Studieson agave nectar have also shown improvementsin markers o metabolic syndrome, a pre-diabetic condition.

a tin in tin

All o this tells us that agave nectar is very goodin general. Now, we have to say that too mucho anything is going to be bad or you. Mostscientists are telling us that i we keep ourructose intake to 12 grams or less per day, thenwe’re going to do quite well, and ructose is notgoing to be bad or us. Remember that number.

Now, when we look at the amount o ructosethat comes in a single serving o Nopalea™, wend that it is about 2-3 grams. So you can take5 or 6 servings o Nopalea in a single daywithout it becoming problematic. We gavepeople a 16 ounce bottle a day or three weeksand measured their blood sugar beore theystarted taking it and again ater three weeks. And you know what we ound? No disturbancesin glucose metabolism. Cholesterol levels wentdown, kidney unction improved and infamma-tory markers like C-reactive protein came down.

All o these things are attributed to the Nopalcactus superruit, but in this array we must

include the benets o agave nectar – and this isthe reason we use it. So, don’t drink too muchagave; don’t think that it’s the new all-you-can-eat ood. You have to remember: everything inmoderation, nothing in excess. Remember too, that health only comes rom healthy habitspracticed every day.

With the explosion o cellphones, texting, mobile applications, gameconsoles and more, it can seem thatthe world is tethered to technology.Even i you keep electronics intheir proper place as conveniences, you may have a riend or amilymember who could beneft rom

this look at a modern phenomenon:addiction to video games.

Is a child in your lie too plugged-in to theworld o video games? It’s happening moreand more, to the point where “video gameaddiction” is becoming a recognized mental

and behavioral disorder. In act, the signs o video game addiction are very much like the redfags or obsessive gambling.

O course, not everyone who plays videogames is addicted, and many youngsters (andadults) enjoy gaming because it lets them solveproblems, be creative, sharpen hand-eye coordi-nation and even improve language and mathskills. That may help explain why last year, over11 million people played the wildly popular“World o Warcrat,” an online, ee-basedmultiplayer game.

Still, like any obsessive behavior, video game

addiction can shut a child o to other healthyaspects o lie.

“Fn” tt t : nin in

One study o young people’s gaming habitsshowed that almost one in 10 were displayingthe same types o behavior that characterizegambling addiction. This is called “pathological”gaming, and it’s a growing problem as video

games become more a part o everyday “virtual”lie. The damage can aect amily and socialrelationships,schoolperformanceand/oroverall

psychological health.

Compared to non-pathological gamers, thoseaddicted to gameplay tend to exhibit these signs:

• Lying to amily and riends about videogame usage

• Using video games to escape rom problemsor bad eelings

• Becoming restless or irritable when trying tostop playing video games

• Skipping homework to play video games

• Doing poorly on a school assignment or testbecause o time spent playing video games

These video game “addicts” are reported tospend about 24 hours each week playing

games. In addition to the problems above,

they also tend to have more physical healthproblems than those whose gaming activitiesare under control.

wt n b n?

As players “win” at video games, they advanceto new levels, and this can make it dicult tostop playing. Experts urge parents to talk withtheir children about gaming, to set limits on

gaming time, and to explain why limits area good idea.

Unlike, say, a board game, video games can’t bestopped at any point without losing a player’sprogress. Gamers usually need to get to a pointwhere they can save their play, so it can beuseul or a parent to give a 15-minute warningbeore they want a child to stop. I a child claimshe can’t stop ater 15 minutes, that’s a sign that

the game needs to be turned o.

Video game addiction is a serious issue, andshouldn’t be ignored as just a “stage.” In act, it’sbecome such a major issue that the AmericanMedical Association has considered including itin its Diagnostic and Statistical Manual o MentalDisorders. I you’re concerned about the gamingbehaviors o a child in your lie, consulting withyour amily’s healthcare provider is a goodplace to start.

imple words can’t beginto express my gratitudeto TriVita.” With these

impassioned thoughts Susie M.recounts her amazing recovery fromserious illness. “I have taken Nopaleafor just one month, and the changeand improvements in my health have

been nothing less than miraculous.”

For many years Susie suffered from various

autoimmune diseases, inflammation, allergies

and chronic breathing problems. “Now, for

the first time in seven years, I feel great,” she

exclaims. “I thank our God and TriVita for the

gift of Nopalea. It has tremendously improved

my life. After long periods of chronic infections,

debilitating breathing problems and countless

rounds of steroids and antibiotics, I amexperiencing a wellness that amazes me.”

a nt t int in

Susie battled numerous debilitating conditions

for most of her adult life. “I didn’t really want to

be an unhealthy person,” says this Ashburn,

Virginia resident, “so I just kept pushing

through, focusing on my goals, my relationships

and the wonderful journey called life.” Susieconsiders herself an eternal optimist. However,

about seven years ago, she was no longer able to

pretend that she was healthy. Susie’s life began

to deteriorate in ways that compromised her

quality of life, her work and her ability to be

actively involved in the lives of her husband

and children. Her chronic respiratory infections

and allergies were “off the charts” and shots

were not an option due to the severity of her

allergies. Susie’s doctors were bewildered and

unable to help, beyond managing the symptoms

 with countless steroids and antibiotics.

All these problems were severely affecting her career as a marriage

and family therapist, with a full

client load, as well as teaching,

speaking and writing. Then in 2003,

more misery came into her life when

she was diagnosed with a malignant tumor in

her thyroid. Luckily, after surgery and treat-

ments, she has been tumor-free for over six

years. However, this cycle of illness prevented

her from working with others to fulfill her life’spurposes… and to be actively involved in the

lives of her children.

N’ nint it

Susie seemed to be at the end of her tether,

when the miracle she was looking for came

along… and it was called Nopalea. This aston-

ishing wellness drink caused an amazing

transformation. “After only two weeks of taking Nopalea, my husband and I went on a

three-hour hike,” she remembers. “I was not

only able to keep up, but there was no recovery

time, no backlash or consequences to this

rigorous activity.” Her husband, John, remarked,

“How wonderful it was to have my wife back.”

After continuing to take Nopalea, Susie had

barely any allergy or breathing troubles, even

after walking at least 45 minutes every day, andin spite of the fact that the pollen count was so

high that various media outlets were advising

people to stay inside. “I am thrilled to say that

since taking Nopalea I have been able to go on

long walks and breathe easier than ever. Before

Nopalea, I was not able to do any physical

activity for the past four years.”

sin ti ti t

Susie and John have talked extensively about

their dreams and goals and have decided to

build a successful TriVita business, in order to

bless others and fulfill their life purposes.

“We feel that we have been called upon to share

the overflowing wellness that is available

through Nopalea,” Susie enthuses. “We are

telling everyone we know about the hope and

health that are available to them. We are

focused and faith-filled as we build a business

that will offer health and wellness to so many in

need. TriVita and Nopalea have blessed us, and

we know that we can and will make a difference

in many lives around the world.”*

Walking may help prevent metabolic syndrome, according to a study in the May 2010 American Journal o Preventive Medicine. Metabolic syndrome is a group o risk actors which together increase the risk o heart diseaseand type 2 diabetes.

Researchers examined the results o a 2005-2006 study which measured the number o steps 1,146 people took perday. Participants were divided into three groups: those who walked ewer than 5,000 steps per day, 5,000 to 9,999steps per day and 10,000 or more steps per day.

About 56% o people in the “sedentary” group (ewer than 5,000 steps per day) had metabolic syndrome, versus13% in the 10,000+ steps group.

Risk actors that can make up metabolic syndrome include excess weight in the abdomen, high triglycerides, lowHDL cholesterol, high blood pressure, insulin resistance or elevated blood glucose levels.

When someone is trying to lose weight, one common piece o advice is “Eatonly when you are hungry.” It sounds

simple enough, but the reasons that people eatcan be very complex, and many have nothingat all to do with hunger. Our internal cues areinfuenced by all sorts o other signals streamingin rom the outside. Do you recognize yoursel inany o these patterns?

T t t “it n”

Feeling virtuous because you had a “lightlunch?” Chances are good that you’re makingup or it later in the day. A study conducted atthe National Center or Toxicology monitoredthe amount o at typically eaten at lunch by17 subjects. When people thought they wereeating less at at lunch, they ate more caloriesthan when they were told the meal was high-at. They also ate more o their calories rom

at compared to both the “low-at” and“normal” periods.

e in

You skip breakast and grab a lunchtime snackrom the vending machine. Beore you knowit, it’s our o’clock and the most you’ve eatenis a ew pretzels. So when you walk throughthe door ater work, you make a beelineto the ridge.

Researchers rom the City University o NewYork combed through the ood diaries o morethan 1,800 women looking or a connectionbetween women’s weight and what percentageo their daily calories they ate ater 5 p.m.Women who consume most o their caloriesbeore 5 p.m. generally eat a more healthuldiet than those who pack more calories inater hours.

et t t bt

Listening to a zippy little mealtime tune mayseem estive, but it can encourage you to eat

more than you intended. Several studies haveshown that our orks seem to move aster tomealtime music. When ast music is playedduring meals, people eat more bites per minute, take bigger bites, chew their ood less and eatmore calories than when slower music or nomusic is played.

T k t tin t :

Does all this mean you should eat alone in aquiet room with blinders on? O course not.Researchers are just beginning to gure outthe complexities o our eating behaviors. Here are some tips to help you get the upperhand at mealtimes:

ln b’ n

Everyone’s body responds dierently to hunger.Maybe your stomach growls, or you have

trouble concentrating. Maybe your stomach justeels empty. Know how to read your signals. When you reach or seconds or that bag o chips, stop and listen to your body. Are youreally hungry?

st ti t

Avoid controversial topics during meals.Talking about how you can’t aord a new roo or the layos at the oce can wait until aterdinner. Come to the table relaxed. Take veminutes to close your eyes and take some deepbreaths. Turn the music o or play somemellow tunes.

giv b ti t it t  Eat slowly and wait at least teen minutesbeore reaching or seconds. It takes thatlong or your stomach to signal your brainthat it is ull.

handles controlling the wing, but running with a 30 pound pack onmy back against the resistance o the wind was dicult and I wasn’tbraced enough when the winds grabbed hold o the wing. I suddenlyound mysel being dragged down to the ground, with him ollowing

suit. With the heavy pack on my back, I didn’t have the strength inmy body to get mysel up!

Finally ater foundering like a turtle on its back, I made it up andwe attempted to run toward the edge o the cli again. I almost eltlike we were in a three-legged race! As the wind caught the wing,it began to lit us up slightly, but would continue to dip down, somy legs were still running even ater we were airborne! I must havelooked like a hamster in a wheel as we nally lited o the grassyarea. My goal o trying to look cool and experienced was shot downin ront o witnesses – quite embarrassing, to say the least!

When I nally got into the seat comortably and we were airborne,I thought my heart was going to pound out o my chest. But thenI took a deep breath and viewed my surroundings. As I lookeddown at the magnicent ocean and the green hillsides, I wascompletely in awe. I suddenly elt very secure in the chair andbegan to take photos. Large birds were fying around us along witha handul o other paragliders. It was truly an experience I willnever orget. We few or 45 minutes beore we had to land on thebeach since the winds had died down too much to allow landing

back at the gliderport.

I can’t describe the way I elt when it was all said and done. Thewhole experience made me so pleased with mysel that at thisstage o my lie, I actually did something extremely daring anduncharacteristic. I now nd mysel wondering what else I cantake on! You see, staying in a comort zone can create a rut. I reada quote recently by Lawrence J. 22  l   VITA  JOURNAL

One nightlast week Iwas out to

dinner with a fewfriends. The topicturned to making a

wish list of thingsto do before our lives were over.We discussed the usual thingsat the top of everyone’s list –traveling to faraway places anddaring to do the things we’vealways wanted to try.

We laughed as we reminiscedabout the scenes from a 2007movie, “The Bucket List”with Jack Nicholson andMorgan Freeman.

din t t xtin

This movie is about two terminally ill men,Carter Chambers (Freeman) and Edward Cole

(Nicholson), who decide to make their wish listscome true and begin a daring adventure o travelaround the world. They start crossing items o the list as they go sky-diving together, get tattoos

on their hands, drive a Shelby Mustang, go on alion saari in Arica and ride motorcycles on theGreat Wall o China.

Ater discussing the movie with my riends, Idecided to rent the movie and have a ew goodlaughs again and nd inspiration or my own list.I wanted to experience extraordinary adventurein my lie. I wasn’t prepared or the message thatseemed to shout at me as I watched the movie orthe second time.

I was stunned into silence as I viewed the sceneo Carter and Edward atop a tomb, viewing theEgyptian pyramids. They conde in each otherabout aith and amily, revealing that Carter haslong been eeling less in love with his wie andthat Edward is deeply hurt by his estrangementwith his only daughter.

Carter tells Edward that the ancient Egyptianshad a beautiul belie about death – when thesouls arrived at the entrance gate o heaventhey were asked two questions. Their answerswould determine whether they were admittedor not. The two questions asked were, “Haveyou ound joy in your lie?” and “Has your liebrought joy to others?”

I put the movie on pause as I refected on thisscene. These two questions about giving andreceiving joy seemed to sum up or me themeaning o lie and the two most importantthings to put on my “list” along with the other

extraordinary adventures already listed there.George Bernard Shaw said it so well in his poemThe True Joy o Lie:

“This is the true joy o lie.The being used or a purposeRecognized by yoursel as a mighty one.”

In short, what is it that you are here to do? What

pulls you out o bed in the morning and keepsyou awake at night with excitement and won’tlet you go? What tasks must you do to makeyour own music on this planet? You know.Deep down you know.

d t n j

The bottom line here is that you should ndmeaning and happiness in everything you choose

to put on your “bucket list,” whether it’s theArican Saari or writing a letter asking someoneyou’ve hurt to orgive you. Don’t get hung up ontrying to compete with others and their lists.Do what’s meaningul to you.

Maybe it’s time to discover the real joy in

your lie.

Don’t take a vacation

rom your givingBy Chaplain Gene Henderon

gn hnn

“Each man should give what

he has decided in his heart togive, not reluctantly or under

compulsion, for God loves acheerful giver.”

– 2 Corinthians 9:7

Imagine i God went onvacation. Nothing long-term,mind you, just a week or

two o in the summer to re-charge, spend timeadmiring His handiwork, and then get backto loving and providing or us. O course it’sunthinkable… but that’s what many olks dowhen they “take a break” this time o yearrom their spirituality. I’m not just talkingabout skipping church here, but skipping theopportunity to share what we have with others.

With vacations and “summer hours” duringthis season, it’s easy to orget that the needso those less ortunate are present year ‘round, and not just during the cold winter holidays. So I’m suggesting that we borrow a slogan romthe stores and shopping malls, and revivethe real spirit o charity and love behind“Christmas in July.” Let’s let our giving spirit

be maniest this summer, and not take a vacationrom generosity.

s intn t nt ivin

Even when we don’t stop to appreciate ourblessings, take part in a worship service or give tochurch and charity, God is always present, givingto us. Let’s look at this idea o giving in depth: Ithink some people misunderstand the nature o giving that God spells out in Scripture.

So many times, we think that giving is a orm o suering. The idea seems to be that i it reallyhurts, it’s really spiritual, but I don’t think that’swhat God intends at all. Let’s say you have $20 inyour pocket ‘til next payday, you’re in church, and you eel the need to “dig deep” when the

oering plate comes around. I you throw that$20 in the plate, I think God’s reaction might be,“Whoa, what are you going to do or gas? Don’tput that $20 in there – I never said that!” Whatour Lord did say, in 2 Corinthians, is that Heloves a “cheerul giver.” Notice that He didn’t say“reckless giver” or “impulsive giver.” By “cheerul,”He means giving out o our blessings… planningto give… sharing with others as generously aspossible. Scripture tells us that we are blessed to

be a blessing in the lives o others. Certainly, there are times to give out o your need and todig deep or God.

Remember, as we learn in 2 Corinthians 9:6,“Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reapgenerously.” I you donate to church or charityjust occasionally, and out o a eeling o obliga-

tion, well, you’ll reap only occasional grace. Buti you give in the spirit o aith and love, sharingyour abundance as you’re able, you will begenerously blessed. Think o yoursel in thatchurch pew with your last $20. You’re sittingthere with no plan or giving, you didn’t discuss

the situation with God, and now you hearsomebody preach and you start eeling guilty.“Gosh,” you might think to yoursel, “what willGod think o me i I don’t give this money?” Godhas told us to prepare in advance or our giving.Ater all, how can we be “cheerul givers” i ourgit means not eeding our amily this week? Inthe Amplied Version, 2 Corinthians 9:10 goeson to say: “And (God) Who provides seed or thesower and bread or eating will also provide and

multiply your (resources or) sowing and increasethe ruits o your righteousness (which maniestsitsel in active goodness, kindness, and charity).”

So now, in July, the year 2010 is more than hal gone. Now is the time or Christmas in July, orremembering that giving is an all-year event.

Now we should be praying about our plan orthe rest o the year, so that we can give out o joy. Will you help out at a soup kitchen oncea week? Give an extra $5 regularly to your

church’s building und? Donate that mostprecious git o time to volunteer at a seniorcenter or crisis shelter?

Keep that idea o sowing and reaping in mind. The question we all need to ask ourselves thissummer is, “What can I do now to plant thatharvest so I can give cheerully?” Truly, givingis a way to honor and worship God, year ‘round.

We all experience the healthy emotion o sadnessthat comes rom loss. You see, we become soattached to people and things in our lie that the

loss o anything is really a loss o ourselves. Thelosses may be minor, provoking minor degrees o sadness. Or, the loss may be catastrophic, provoking proound sadness that may spiraldownward into clinical depression.

Sadness may also arise rom conficted thinking:wishing that events should unold in a particularway. We invest our time, energies and anticipa-tion in a particular outcome. When lie does notharmonize with our desires, we can become sad.I lie consistently ails to meet our expectations

we become despondent. Helplessness andhopelessness over time are hallmarks o clinical depression.

Another kind o sadness completely divorcedrom the experience o loss or conficted thinkingis based in brain biochemistry. Many things cancreate this orm o melancholy. For example, apoor diet or nutrient deciencies can createchemical imbalances in the brain. Exposure to

certain toxic substances may alter brain chemistryand produce a gloom that does not lit until thetoxin is resolved.

a n sad

All imbalances in the brain or body are rooted inour causes: trauma or injury, toxins and poisons, deciencies and emotional distress (stress). One o the most common deciencies causing sadness is a

lack o sunlight. Since there is less sunlightduring the winter season, people suering withthis deciency are said to experience “SeasonalAective Disorder (SAD).” (The word “aect”

describes mood and emotions.) According tothe American Academy o Family Practice,up to 20% o the general population experiencessignicant melancholic mood changesduring winter.

lt t n in

SAD is caused by a lack o sunlight. Humans arediurnal (as opposed to nocturnal) animals: we areawake during the day and asleep at night. It isimportant to recognize this biological drive to

understand SAD. When humans are deprived o proper sunlight, our biological clock becomesdisrupted.Thisinternalclockregulatesoursleep/wake cycle and more. Our biological clock alsoregulates our adrenal gland unction, our thyroidunction and the major hormone-regulatingmechanisms in our brain. When these hormonesare disrupted because o a deciency o light, ourbrain chemistry is disrupted and SAD may result.

Fortunately, there is an easy remedy or sunlightdeciency: sunlight! Twenty minutes o brightmorning sun as well as twenty minutes o eveningtwilight sun can ll this critical deciency, resetour biological clock and balance hormones. Byexposing ourselves to sunlight now we alter ourbrain chemistry to become more sensitiveto uture exposure. So we’ll need less exposurein the winter i we get adequate exposureduring the summer.

Sunlight is a simple, natural, sae remedy orSAD. So, eel ree to get the appropriate amountearly or later in the day.

You may be aware o a typeo at called trans atty acids,or “trans ats,” and you might

also know that they can be dangerousor your health. But do you knowhow widespread they are in the

ood supply? For years, ood labels have beenrequired to include saturated at anddietary cholesterol. Not until 2006,though, did the Food and DrugAdministration (FDA) order transats to be included with its at“cousins.” Consuming saturated at,

trans at and dietary cholesterol raisesthe levels o “bad” LDL cholesterolthat raises the risk o heart disease. And heart disease is one o theleading causes o death in the U.S.

Trans ats are created during ood processingwhen liquid oils are converted into semi-solidats, a process called “hydrogenation.” Thiscreates partially-hydrogenated oils that tendto keep ood resh longer while on grocery

store shelves. The problem? These partially-hydrogenated oils contain trans ats. Wheneating processed oods, be sure to check the

Nutrition Facts label on the packaging to ndout not just how much trans at they contain, but also saturated at and cholesterol. Here’s asample label rom the FDA or a single servingo tub (not stick) margarine:

w tn t n k

Most commonly, you’ll nd trans ats incommercially-baked cookies, crackers and pies. Some commercial restaurants may also usepartially-hydrogenated oils when rying theirentrees and side items, or preparing baked goodsand spreads. Other common oods that tend tocontain high amounts o trans ats includemargarine, shortening, butter, packaged oodslike cake and biscuit mixes, Ramen noodlesand soup cups, ast ood (unless the restaurant

species otherwise), rozen ood, chips andcrackers, breakast cereals, whipped toppingsand dips.

For most people, it’s impractical to try to elimi-nate trans ats entirely. The goal, though, is tobe aware o its presence in hundreds o everydayitems, and to cut consumption as much aspossible. In all cases, even i the packaging says“low-at,” watch out: compare brands and choosethe one lowest in trans at, or preerably with notrans at at all. Know, too, that the same brando a product can change its ingredients andprocessing practices, so even i you buy oneparticular product regularly, don’t assume thatnothing has changed: check the NutritionFacts label.
