All photographers (staff, part-time, freelance, contract and college student) are eligible if they are Arizona residents who had their work published in print or online by a news/sports gathering organization during 2015. Mission statement: The purpose of the Arizona Photojournalism Awards (APA) is to recognize the best visual coverage of Arizona by news-gathering photographers. We aim to encourage growth within the profession, build stronger relationships in the photojournalism community and instill passion to the next generation. The first place photographs from the single categories X5-X15 will be judged. From those images, judges will select the “2015 Photograph of the Year”

A portfolio consists of the following:

4 - Sports Photographer of the Year (Metro, Non-Metro & College)

A sports portfolio consists of up to 12 single sports photographs. Note: At least 6 of the entries must have been photographed in Arizona. Complete Eligibility Form on page 9 & Entry Form on page 15.

5 - College Photographer of the Year (College students only) Entry Form on page 14. The judges will select one winner.

This category is open to all students enrolled in an Arizona post-secondary program during the contest calendar year of 2015 (January 1 – December 31, 2015.) Students that graduate in 2015 may not enter work created after their graduation date. A portfolio consists of the following:

X08 - Portrait - A single picture of a person or people revealing the essence of a subjects’ character.

X09 - Pictorial - A single picture that explores a graphic or aesthetic moment with emphasis on composition. X10 - Culinary - A single image that illustrates a mastery of photographic technique and composition of the culinary arts.

X11 - Nature - A single image of the physical world, including plants, animals, the landscape, and other features of the earth, as opposed to humans or human creations.

X12 - Sports Action - A single picture that captures peak sports action. X13 - Sports Feature - A single picture that captures emotion, celebration, jubilation, dejection, and reaction among athletes and fans. X14 - Sports Portrait - A single sports-related picture that captures the essence of an athletes’ character.

X15 - Sports Pictorial - A single sports-related picture that explores a graphic or aesthetic moment with emphasis on composition.

THE RULES

2015 CONTEST

1- Non-Metro single entries will automatically be entered in both the Community Singles Contest & the Statewide Singles Contest, with no additional fee.

2- Categories must have at least five entries to be judged.

3- College students may submit up to 10 entries in the Statewide Singles Contest, if you enter: College Photographer of the Year. Complete Eligibility Form on page 9. (No fee required)

4- Entry fee is now the same for both Non-Metro & Metro: $50

5- No a la carte entries.

ELIGIBILITY

Journalists are considered members of the Arizona Press Club if they work in the production of news for any Arizona newspaper, online news site, periodical or news service.

Entries must have been originally published in 2015.

All entries must have been produced for the editorial department of an Arizona publication, news/sports web sites or wire services. Work produced for advertising, marketing or other departments is not eligible.

ETHICS AND DISQUALIFICATION

ALL entries that are not viewable by the contest staff or judges will be DISQUALIFIED.

The Arizona Press Club promotes ethical journalism. The Press Club reserves the right to disqualify any entry or withdraw any award based on ethical violations or violations of the rules, as deemed by the board. Entries that do not conform to the rules will be disqualified. If an entry is disqualified, the prize will be awarded to the next place winner. Disqualified entrants will forfeit their entry fees.

PHOTO MANIPULATION

Photojournalism should be an accurate recording of events. The Arizona Press Club will not accept and will disqualify any entry that has been altered. Nothing should be added or subtracted from the original photograph. Minor adjustments for color balance, contract and lightness/darkness are permitted.

JUDGING

Entries are be judged by out-of-state photojournalists. The judges are selected by the Arizona Press Club. Judges’ decisions are final. Unless winning entries do not conform to rules.

DISCLAIMER

The Arizona Press Club is not responsible for lost or damaged entries but will take reasonable care processing the entries.

GRIEVANCE POLICY

For problems, concerns and complaints about the contest, the contest chairperson shall notify the Grievance Committee (President and Executive Officers). The committee will rule on the matter or forward it to the full Arizona Press Club board for final approval.

AWARDS

POY, Community POY & Sports POY First place, Second place, Third place & Award of Excellence will receive a personalized certificate. College Photographer of the Year 1st Place will receive a $500 scholarship and personalized certificate. 2nd Place will receive a $300 scholarship and personalized certificate. 3rd Place will receive a $200 scholarship and personalized certificate. State & Community Single Categories First place, Second place, Third place and Award of Excellence will receive a personalized certificate. Photograph on the Year Photograph of the Year is awarded a personalized certificate. Contest results will be announced in May 2016.

ENTRY PROCEDURES

All photographers must include the signed Eligibility Form (page 9) and the form for each category you enter. Paper or electronic versions of the forms can be submitted. Images must be submitted exactly as they were published. Photographs included in an X04/C04-Picture Story may not be entered again in single categories X05-X15 or C05-C15. Entries will not be returned. Your Entry Video entries must be entered as an active URL. Provide complete caption information in the IPTC caption field. Include your byline in the caption as you would normally. Create a folder for each: POY, Sports POY, Community POY (example: “npoy.int” “spoy.int”, int = your three initials) Name your files: POY.INT.01.jpg SPOY.INT.01.jpg POY.INT.02.jpg SPOY.INT.02.jpg Etc…. Etc…. Create another folder with your single category entries. (example: “singles.int”) X01.INT.example.jpg X11.INT.example.jpg Etc…. Complete and sign the Eligibility Form and contest entry forms. Burn your folders on a thumb drive, CD or DVD. Use your first and last name for the disk name.
