    EDITORS NOTE

    C hristmas is one of my favoriteholidays, and this year it will be especially wonder ul. The newestmember o the amily, my six-month-oldgrandson, Harper, will be lling my homewith extra joy and laughter. I can hardly waitto have all three o my daughters at home tocelebrate this special season.

    Its hard to believe that my daughter Brittany isa mother hersel . It seems like just a ew yearsago that my girls were very young, and Ill alwaystreasure Christmas 1989 in particular. My girlswere two, six and nine at the time. I had one

    avorite book I read them rom the time theywere old enough to sit still and listen. It wasa book about the true meaning o Christmassurrounding the story o St. Nicholas. The

    book ocused on how much St. Nicholas trulyloved God and how he gave secretly to others,wanting no recognition. You see, I shared withmy daughters how God is their Provider andeverything we have comes rom Him.

    They loved the story, enjoying everythingabout Christmas even going to the mall andsitting on Santas lap and getting their picturestaken. They knew the truth and recognizedthat the celebration where we gatheredtogether amily and riends and exchanged gi tswas or one reason only to honor God andcelebrate the birth o His Son.

    My daughters all have sensitive, giving heartsand have always been more concerned withwhat they could give others, rather than

    ocusing on what they wanted or themselves.

    They would o ten wrap up some o theiravorite personal treasures and give themto each other what a sacri ce!

    All amilies have their traditions and onethat I grew up with was opening a ewpresents on Christmas Eve, then ndingspecial gi ts sitting under the tree Christmasmorning, along with meaning ul little gi tsin our homemade stockings. This particular

    about toxins around us: in our food, air and waterand in our daily environments.

    Do you have hay ever that seems unrelatedto the season? Is there an asthma su erer inyour home with unexplained attacks? Is apersistent skin rash a mystery? The culprit inall these cases could be lurking right insideyour home: mold.

    Mold is a growing organism, a ungus oundeverywhere. Outdoors, its part o the naturalcycle, breaking down dead matter such as

    allen leaves and dead trees. Indoors, though,mold can be a problem. Take a wet or dampspot, add molds reproductive spores and youcan have a ull-blown health crisis.

    Mold is a well-known allergen (something thatcauses allergic reactions), and can trigger allthese symptoms:

    Sneezing Runny nose Red eyes Skin rash Asthma attacks

    Your home may be spotless and seeminglydry, but mold can lurk in hidden areas:where pipes leak, where appliances dont ventproperly or where a rain gutter drips waterinto a oundation.

    There are many types o mold, and they canvary in color rom black to green to white. I you suspect mold in your home, how to handleit will depend on the size o the problem,according to the Environmental Protection

    Agency (EPA). I the moldy area is less than

    about 10 square eet (less than roughly 3eet by 3 eet), you can probably handle the

    job yoursel . First, x the leak or other waterproblem that nurtured the mold. Then scrubmold o hard sur aces with detergent andwater, and dry completely. So t materials likeceiling tiles or carpet may have to be replaced.

    To handle a bigger problem, check yourphone book or cleaners who specialize inwater damage or water restoration. Be sureto check re erences, and look or companiesa liated with pro essional organizations.

    Keeping mold under controlThe EPA advises these steps to prevent andcontrol mold in the home:

    Fix water leaks or spills ast.

    Clean and repair roo gutters regularly.

    Be sure the ground slopes away romthe oundation so water doesnt enter orcollect around it.

    Keep air conditioning drip pans clean,and drain lines fowing reely.

    Keep indoor humidity between30 and 50 percent.

    4. Avoid alcohol as it is high in calories. Choose water or anotherlow-calorie beverage. Sparkling water is another option; add awedge o lemon or lime to give it a little more favor.

    5. Focus on people, not on the platters! Try to spend more timechatting with riends and amily and less time eating.

    This year, with some simple planning and determination, you canhave your cake and eat it, too!

    Reach out and hug someone Make it a goal to give at leastve hugs a day; you can hug your spouse, members o your amily

    and your riends. You never know when you can make someonesday with this easy way to show a ection. A simple pat on theback or a squeeze o the hand can also show someone you care.

    Call a riend You probably know someone who could use alistening ear; take a ew minutes to call someone and spend a ewminutes asking them about their day.

    Practice kindness A simple act o kindness can really makesomeones day! Hold open the door or someone or ask i theyneed help carrying groceries. Keep an eye out: Opportunities orkindness abound.

    Make complimenting a habit I you notice someone looksgood in a certain color or they did a good job on a work project,compliment them. It will make them eel good and their pleasurewill make you happy as well.

    without taxing our health?You can start by ollowing my our easy tips oreating out during the holidays.

    1: Have a glass o room temperature water with lemon be oreyour meal arrives. The water willhydrate you so you dont mistake excessthirst or hunger. The lemon will alkalizeyour system, ensuring less probability orheartburn. The room temperature waterwill pass through you quicker than coldwater, which impedes digestion.

    Raw Chocolate Truffles

    INGREDIENTS

    cup raw cacaobutter, melted

    cup raw cashews

    cup rawagave nectar

    1 cup raw cacao powder

    (or cup carob and cup cacao powder) 2 tsp. vanilla extract (alcohol-free)

    or vanilla bean seed

    Pinch sea salt (preferably HimalayanPink or Real Salt Sea Salt)

    DIRECTIONSIn a food processor tted with the S-blade,process cashews, melted cacao butter and

    agave until smooth. Add the remainingingredients and process until well mixedand smooth.

    Chill in freezer for 20-40 minutes. The morechilled the mixture is, the easier it will beto roll into truffl es. Once chilled, roll withyour hands into balls and then roll into yourchoice of shredded coconut, raw cacao nibsor raw cacao powder. Store in refrigerator!

    or amily and riends to come together andcelebrate the joy o the season.

    This year is especially meaning ul or me. Myson, Kelly, and his wi e, Melissa, have movedback to my home state o Arizona, with theiridentical one-year-old twin daughters, Isa andZoe, a ter living in Boston or our years. I amlooking orward to sharing the holiday seasonwith amily but not everyone eels so positive.

    Stress ul relationshipsFor many people the holidays not only bring thejoy o celebrating with amily and riends, butalso the occasion or tension and stri e to sur acebetween certain individuals. Relationships cancause turmoil, confict or stress at any time, butare o ten heightened during the holidays.

    Family misunderstandings and conficts canintensi y, especially i you are together orseveral days. A common amily issue is when aholiday gathering turns into a competitive arena

    or adult sibling rivalry. There are a host o eelings that show up when one sibling thinks

    the parents avor one child over the other.

    Its natural or some people to be more drawntogether due to geographical proximity (yoursister lives closer to your parents), shared person-

    The best Christmas my

    amily ever had was theworst, nancially. Bankruptand about to have our house

    oreclosed, we had no moneyto buy material gi ts. We

    were too embarrassed to share our situation,and so decided to celebrate the season withjust us: my wi e Sharon and I and our 11 and12-year-old kids.

    Using scrap wood, I made a doll stand or mydaughter, and a sword or my son. Those werethe sum total o the tangible gi ts exchangedthat year but oh, how I remember thatChristmas. We visited an old olks home downthe street and sang carols. We wrote letters toeach other about how much we appreciated eachother, and what the Lord meant to us at thisspecial time o year. We prayed or each other.

    Since then our worldly goods have increased

    considerably, but Im hard-pressed to recall asingle Christmas as memorable as that one.It had nothing to do with money, shopping,planning elaborate dinners or retting over whatto bring to which holiday party. It hadeverything to do, though, with what I considerthe shining gi t o the season: peace.

    Lighter and brighter,or pressured and stressed?The glorious gi t that we celebrate at this timeo year was intended to li t our burden, not addto it with going and doing and buying and allthe rest. Were supposed to be lighter andbrighter, taking com ort in the reason orthe season. Instead, especially in thecurrent tough times, so many o us eelpressured and stressed that the rates o crime and suicide go up.

    Lets stop. Lets stop and remember that gi tsdont have to cost money, and that thereal gi t o Christmas cannot be bought.Wouldnt you love to eel the serenity,the peace o this special time, instead o

    the commercial mania? Instead o eelingobligated to buy a pile o needless gi ts, wouldntyour spirit be li ted by giving something romthe heart?

    Heres my holiday suggestion: Take the pressureo yoursel this year and do something kind orothers. Youll get a spiritual bene t, too, romideas like these:

    Take time each day to pray or meditate.Give thanks or your blessings.

    Read rom Scripture to your lovedones (the Christmas story in Matthewand Luke is the per ect choice).

    Pay a visit to your houseboundneighbor (and see i you might run anerrand or them while youre there).

    Shovel someone elses drivewayanonymously.

    Volunteer a little time to a homeless shelter.

    Replace one shopping expedition with avisit to a hospital ward, or an assistedliving center maybe to sing carols?

    Give to yoursel by giving to othersI you just look around your community, I knowyou can nd more ways to give (and get back)true joy and peace by helping others.

    With so many people struggling through hardtimes, it may be the best time to, as Psalm 46:10tells us, Be still and know that I am God.Here, being still doesnt literally mean to bemotionless; it means to recognize that the powerto overcome, the power to triumph, is Gods andnot ours. God will de end and protect us; Godwill keep us in His heart always.

    Bronx, New YorkPeople who do crossword puzzles, play card games and take part in other brain activities may help delay theonset o rapid memory loss associated with Alzheimers and other dementias, according to a study in the August

    2009 journal Neurology.

    The study ollowed 488 healthy people (age 75 to 85), who had enrolled in the Bronx Aging Study between1980 and 1983. At the beginning o the study, participants reported how o ten they participated in sixactivities: reading, writing, doing crossword puzzles, playing board or card games, having group discussionsand playing music.

    Researchers ound that each additional day o activity delayed memory loss by .18 years, roughly 1 to 2 months.

    The point o accelerated decline was delayed by 1.29 years or the person who participated in 11 activities perweek compared to the person who participated in only 4 activities per week, said study author Charles B. Hall,Ph.D., o Albert Einstein College o Medicine o Yeshiva University.

    Lund, SwedenThose who live near noisy roads could be at increased risk or high blood pressure, say researchers rom LundUniversity in Sweden.

    The study, rom a public survey o 24,238 Swedish adults between the ages o 18 and 80, showed that people betweenthe ages o 40 and 59 who were exposed to constant noise over 64 decibels were twice as likely to report high bloodpressure as others. Younger adults also reported hypertension but the elderly experienced negligible e ects.

    The results were published in the online journal Environmental Health. Researchers said that the study doesntprove the noise caused the blood pressure increases, but still could have played a part in it.

    Indianapolis, IndianaPhysically un t people have twice the mortality risk o even those in slightly better shape, according to a recentstudy in Medicine & Science in Sports and Exercise.

    Researchers ollowed 4,300 people over a period o 20 years, assessing tness and physical activity throughtreadmill tests and questionnaires, and tracking mortality rates.

    The least t o the subjects had a mortality rate twice that o the group only in slightly better shape and amortality rate our times that o the most- t group.

    Given the considerable survival bene t associated with improving tness in the least- t group, increasing tnessthrough regular physical activity should be a priority in un t individuals, said Sandra Mandic, Ph.D., a membero the research team. Health pro essionals should consider a sedentary li estyle and poor tness as treatable andmajor risk actors.

You can attach pictures,quotations or actually anything that movesyou or represents a goal or dream: pictures o a new car, a vacation spot youd like to visitor maybe photos eaturing a healthier, slimmerversion o yoursel .

    Getting startedVision boards dont have to be works o art sodont worry i youre not Picasso! Your visionboard can be whatever you want it to be.Here are a ew tips or creating your board:

    1. Designate a time to work on it Set aside a block o time to work onyour vision board. Youll want to makesure you have plenty o time to thinkthrough your goals as well as ndpictures, quotations and any otherthings youd like to add.

    2. Keep outside distractions at aminimum I you have a hobby room
