engine, dashboard or door trim of the vehicle, then refresh your RAC Car Passport for free by logging in with the

Here is an overview of the vehicle history. Use this information to make sure that you are completely
happy with the vehicle history before you purchase the car.

SCRAPPED
Any person or business who has legally kept the vehicle
since it was first registered with the DVLA
If colour changes are found check the vehicle matches
the V5C document to verify that it's a legitimate colour
change registered with the DVLA
Personalised plates are not uncommon. If plate changes
are found, check the registration number and VIN match
the V5C document
If the car is listed as imported ask the seller to explain
the vehicle history to you, so you can be sure there
weren't any issues with the car before it was imported
If the DVLA has marked this vehicle as exported, it
should no longer be in the UK. Check the vehicle is
registered with the DVLA before buying
We advise not to buy a car that is registered as
scrapped. A scrapped vehicle should no longer exist,
meaning the car for sale could be a clone.

HOW TO NEGOTIATE
Find out what price similar cars are going for, set your
price and then negotiate to that point with the seller.
Start at your 'best price' and prepare to meet in the
middle.
Highlight any needed repairs and use this to negotiate
on price, for example to replace worn tyres.
6
Prices will depend on the age and
condition of the vehicle. A full service
MOT history could add value to the car.

Faults found during a test drive are always worth
haggling over .
Check any modifications have been carried out to a
high standard, be aware some modifications can
devalue cars.
“Be open-minded. Obviously you’ll have a budget and a
good idea of what you want. But if something else crops
up in top-notch condition at a bargain price you’d be
a fool to ignore it.
The second rule is to trust your instincts. If a gut feeling
tells you there is something not quite right about the
car or the seller, walk away. Don’t be browbeaten by
logical argument into buying something you don’twant. That’s how salesmen earn their money and you
lose yours”.

CHECK THE VEHICLE HISTORY CHECK THE V5C
VALIDATE THE VIN TEST DRIVE INSURANCE
All major changes such as number
plate or colour changes should be
registered with the DVLA. They could
be innocent but they could also be an
attempt to hide the identity of the
vehicle. If you’re unsure, highlight
any concerns with the seller or the
DVLA before you buy.
Check the details on the V5C
(registration document) are consistent
with the vehicle itself, and ask the seller
for proof of address. If you’re unsure
check your concerns with the DVLA
before you make your purchase.
Make sure you check the VIN number
(found on the engine bay, windscreen
or door) to ensure the car hasn’t
been cloned. Make a note of the VIN
number and we’ll check it matches
the VIN number registered to the
vehicle at no extra cost.
Are you insured to take the car out for
a test drive? Your standard car
insurance may not cover you to drive
the vehicle, for peace of mind you can
arrange temporary insurance so you
can road-test the car knowing you’re
covered should anything happen.
