40 PRECISION, INSIDE AND OUT. A CABIN THAT COCOONS YOU.FLOWING LINES UNLIKE ANY OTHER

42

44 Few open-topped sports cars offer thedriver such an invigorating ride, especiallythrough this landscape of contrasts andsudden changes. Both sports car and long-

distance tourer, with either an exhilaratingopen cockpit or an all-enveloping hood, theVantage Roadster can be cold-blooded in its efficiency or the hottest car on the road.

46

48 Like all Aston Martin sports cars, the V8 Vantage Roadster is simple, understated and beautiful, with elegant lines that hint atcontrolled aggression. Perfectly proportioned, with a low purposeful stance, the Roadster is uncompromisingly modern yet alsoincorporates classic Aston Martin designcues. And like all Aston Martin sports cars, its beauty is more than skin deep. Thedesign team’s brief was to give the VantageRoadster the look of a well-toned athletewearing a skin-tight suit. With taut, almoststretched surfaces, the car achieves amuscular, close-cut look.

Outside, the Vantage Roadster displaysbeautiful sports car lines, while maintaining a unique identity. Inside, its traditionalcraftsmanship is matched to striking 21stcentury style. Hand-trimmed in the finestmaterials, the cabin is that of an authenticsports car. Driver and passenger sit low, close to the car’s centre of gravity, wherethey can feel it reacting to the input of the driver – it’s a special sensation, usually only experienced in racing cars. The connection between car and driver is direct, sporting and instantaneous.

The Vantage Roadster is a sports car with a simple goal – to provide maximumexhilaration – yet it is also one of the world’smost beautiful cars. The side profile is anelegant, simple sweep, creating a curved line rather like a bow under tension, while therear haunches are wide and muscular, likethose of a powerful animal. The fabric hoodclosely follows the line of the coupé whenclosed; when folded, the flow from front torear is unbroken and supremely elegant. Thehood stows neatly beneath the rear tonneaucover, deploying in just 18 seconds, and atspeeds of up to 50 km/h (30 mph). Whenraised, the hood complements perfectly thecurvaceous bodywork.

Aston Martin’s engineers focused onpreserving the light weight of the VantageCoupé to ensure that the Roadster makesthe most of its compact size, agility andpower. At just 4.38 metres (172.5 in) long, not only is it the smallest model in the Aston Martin range and one of the leanestcars in its class, but it is light too, and very nimble. Hand-finished body panelsprovide delectable shapes and perfect fit, while an all-alloy underbody structure –derived from aerospace technology –incorporates bonded aluminium extrusionsand castings for superb rigidity and minimalweight. The bonnet and roof are alsoconstructed from lightweight alloy, while the front wings and sills are produced fromadvanced composites.

The Vantage Roadster could not be anythingelse but an Aston Martin. It is a modernshape, but with a lineage that can be tracedback to some of the great Aston Martinmodels of the past. The marque’s 14thconvertible model since 1950, the Roadsteris the direct ancestor of iconic open-topmodels such as the DB2, DB5, DB6 andDB7. It is a pure sports car that heightensthe sensations and provides a drivingexperience that is synonymous with Aston Martin, offering both high performance and thrilling dynamics.

CLASSIC

DESIGN50 From the moment you first sit in the VantageRoadster, you connect with it. It’s a bondcreated partly by the natural agility of the car, but also by the embrace of the authenticsports car cabin. Hand-trimmed in the finest materials, it is simple, logical andbeautifully designed; everything you and yourpassenger touch is unique to Aston Martin.

The instrument pack is beautifully craftedfrom aluminium and has a three-dimensionalprofile for easy reading. To create a clear, simple design, most of the warning lights are hidden behind the aluminium faces, becoming visible only when illuminated. The central message displays, meanwhile, are organic electroluminescent (OEL) – aprocess pioneered by Aston Martin – makingthem easier to read than conventional LCDs.

A synthesis of high technology and hand-crafted elegance, the interior features anoptional pop-up satellite navigation screen,class-leading audio system and AstonMartin’s trademark glass starter button.

Like all Aston Martins, the Vantage Roadsteris hand-assembled and hand-finished,allowing its designers freedom to producethe perfect form, without the constraints and inflexibility of mass production. Onlycraftsmen can deliver the design details and level of finish that Aston Martin engineersand designers demand. For instance, thebonnet of the Vantage Roadster has shutlines that travel all the way to the front of the car, without the need for a separate nose cone, creating a cleaner, crisper design.Furthermore, the Roadster uses metal meshgrilles and trims instead of the typical plasticalternatives: integrity is a cornerstone atAston Martin and we believe that everythinghas to be right.

True, there is a certain cachet to a car being both hand-built and modern – it is rare these days and getting rarer all the time– but there are a host of sensible engineeringand design reasons why Aston Martins arestill hand-assembled.

Expert craftsmen can perform thecomplicated, labour-intensive work thatrobots on production lines cannot. They can craft designs and finishes that defeatmachines. Take, for instance, the singleaperture cuts for the headlamps in the front wings; this design can be achieved only because the Vantage Roadster ispainstakingly built by hand.

Then there is the beautiful stitching of theleather seats. Automated machines canstitch leather, but they cannot do it with thesame lively care, or quality, as craftsmen. The same is applicable to the finish of thebodies. Mass-produced cars frequently need plastic finishers to hide awkwardproduction line joins, but cosmetic remedialwork is unnecessary at Aston Martin, whereeach car is expertly hand-finished andtended by craftsmen. There are aluminiumalloys used for switches, instruments and thefacia; fabric and leather in myriad coloursand finishes – including many differentstitching treatments – and a special pianoblack wood trim.

Engines, too, are individually hand-assembled,just as they always have been at Aston Martin, although now at a dedicated, high-technologyfacility in Cologne, Germany. There is no rushwith hand-assembly; the over-riding concernis always quality. That is why Aston Martins –all Aston Martins – are built by hand, and it iswhy all the world’s finest luxury goods, fromsuits to watches, are still hand-made. Whenlow volumes are desirable, and exclusivity isdemanded, it is quite simply the best way – a mix of technology and tradition that resultsin an exclusive, advanced and uniquelydesirable sports car.

52 DYNAMICS The Vantage Roadster is a high-performancesports car. With 0-100 km/h (62 mph) in 5.0seconds (0-60 mph in 4.9 seconds) and apotential maximum speed of 280 km/h (175mph) its performance figures are as heady as you would expect of an Aston Martin.

Although there are many reasons for thisexcellent performance – light weight andefficient aerodynamics among them – the key is the engine, the heart of any greatsports car. This new V8 has been specificallydesigned and developed for the VantageRoadster and Vantage Coupé. Hand-assembled at Aston Martin’s purpose-builtengine facility in Cologne, Germany, it is a light, compact, all-alloy unit – high-performance yet ultra-responsive even at the lower end of the rev range. Its maximumtorque is an impressive 410 Nm (302 lb ft) @ 5000 rpm, 75 per cent of which isdelivered at just 1500 rpm – barely morethan idle – making the Roadster extremelytractable and great fun to drive. Push harder, and that V8 engine revs freely, deliveringrefined, exhilarating pace.

True to Aston Martin tradition, it is as musical as it is muscular, an engine thatentertains in every sense. The bore andstroke dimensions are optimised to providean excellent balance between outright power and torque, while a resonanceinduction system improves tractability andperformance, and contributes to that inspiredengine note. The inlet camshaft timing alsovaries, improving low-end throttle responseand mid-range torque in particular. Theexhaust system is highly effective. Each bankof cylinders features a four-into-two-into-onemanifold – an arrangement more usuallyfound on racing cars – which improvesbreathing and therefore performance. Specialbypass valves provide a quieter exhaust note at low speed, opening at higher enginespeeds to reduce the pressure in the exhaustsystem, raise the power output and providea more rousing accompaniment.

The flexibility of the engine and the easy-to-use controls make everyday town or citydriving simple and uncomplicated. Electronicsafety controls provide further reassurance.Braking power is awesome, with massivedisc brakes – 355 mm diameter at the front,330 mm at the rear – that are both ventilatedand grooved. For the Vantage Roadster, grooving is a better solution thanconventional cross-drilling of the discs, asthey work more effectively with the brakepads and do not fill with brake pad dust. There’s a choice of two alloy wheel styles –18 inch or 19 inch in diameter – fitted withspecially tuned high-performance tyres.

The fast-shifting, six-speed Graziano manualgearbox, with ratios perfectly matched to theperformance of the V8 engine, is joined byAston Martin’s new Sportshift automatedmanual transmission. This ultra-quick systemprovides the driver with Formula 1-stylefingertip control of gear changes, usingsteering wheel-mounted paddles to progresssmoothly and swiftly through the ratios. To adapt to all driving conditions, anadditional ‘Comfort’ setting offering a morerelaxed gear change is also available – it isselected via a single button on the centreconsole. Sportshift also benefits fromenhanced low-speed functionality: a special‘crawl’ feature inches the car along atparking speeds, allowing you to concentrateon positioning the vehicle rather thanfeathering the throttle for control. Sportshiftincludes a user-selected Auto Drive modewhere the system takes care of the speedand timing of all gear changes.

The engine is positioned ahead of the cabinbut well behind the front axle line, making theVantage Roadster a front mid-engined car.

Dry sump lubrication, normally a motorsportapplication, enables the engine to sit lower in the car, which further improves handling by lowering the centre of gravity. Dry sumplubrication also helps to minimise thelikelihood of g-forces denying oil supply tothe engine under hard cornering. Improvingweight distribution still further, the transmissionis mid-rear mounted – forward of the rear‘axle’ line – and connected to the engine bya rigid, cast aluminium torque tube, whichhouses the immensely strong and lightcarbon-fibre propeller shaft.

Dynamically, the Vantage Roadster hasenviable credentials: a high-performance,advanced, lightweight V8 engine, one of the most lightweight, rigid body structuresavailable, fully independent double wishbonesuspension and optimum weight distribution.Put them together and it’s little wonder that the result is a supremely agile andentertaining open sports car that offers aninvigorating ride.

On-road communication and feel areessential to a sports car, for any elasticitybetween the driver and the contact point ofthe tyre diminishes the driving experience. The driver needs to know exactly how thecar is behaving. That’s why the bodystructure of the Vantage Roadster is so rigid: it ensures maximum communicationbetween road and hand, between tyre andtorso. The car’s behaviour is relayed faithfullyand accurately, ensuring an undiluted drivingexperience, yet it remains tractable and easy to drive.

The advanced body structure of the VantageRoadster is the key to its superb handlingand responsiveness. Developed alongsidethe Vantage Coupé, the Roadster shares theall-alloy VH (Vertical Horizontal) architecturethat is unique to Aston Martin and whichprovides an excellent backbone. The use of sophisticated materials such as lightweightalloys, magnesium and advanced compositesfor the body further contributes to the car’slow weight and high rigidity.

The immense strength and rigidity of thisstructure has a number of benefits: itprovides a stable platform from which thesuspension can control the car, it gives the driver enhanced feel, it increases the strength and safety of the passenger cell and it improves build quality. None of these advantages are undermined by theRoadster’s convertible bodyshell. As ever,Aston Martin’s no-compromise approachensures the driver gets not only a safer, sounder car, but improved performance and sharper responses, too.

The light, strong body structure of theVantage Roadster is perfectly matched to the specially designed double wishbonesuspension, resulting in outstanding handlingand excellent ride quality. Fundamental to its handling capabilities is the fact that theRoadster is naturally well balanced. Thesuspension wishbones are aluminium, as are the dampers, to save even more weight. The steering rack is solidly mounted forwardof the front wheels – common on racing cars but rarely seen on road cars – for better control and to provide the driver with greater feedback and response.

If a car is to have natural agility it must also have a low polar moment of inertia and excellent weight distribution. In order to achieve this, the Vantage Roadster isdesigned to concentrate as much weight as possible within the wheelbase, withminimal front and rear overhangs.

54 The Vantage Roadster is a high-performancesports car, yet the engine is so tractable, thehandling so predictable, the visibility so goodand the controls so easy to use that it is ascomfortable in town or city as it is on countryroads or even the track. Combine this withhigh safety standards providing reassurancewhatever the driving conditions, and theRoadster delivers the sensational feel ofopen-air motoring with ease, making it botha weekday working car and the ultimateweekend treat.

This is a car that will thrill you on the track, yet serve you just as well in town. It’s anexhilarating drive on the world’s mostdemanding race circuits, yet is quite happyon motorways, in traffic or across country. One of the world’s most inspiring after-hourssports cars, it is nonetheless quite happylabouring from nine to five.

As you would expect of an Aston Martin, ithas been thoroughly – and painstakingly –tested. The V8 Vantage Coupé and Roadsterhave endured the most extensive testing anddevelopment programme in the company’slong history: no fewer than 50 prototypeswere vigorously tested over more than half a million miles. Over 12,000 miles of testing, including maximum speed runs, were carriedout in Dubai, where the ambient temperatureregularly hit 48 °C and the bodywork of thecars reached 87 °C. High-speed testing wasalso carried out at the Nardo test track inItaly, where the car ran for a total of 37,000miles. Further extensive testing was carriedout in Germany at the Nürburgring’sNordschleife, the world’s most dauntingracing circuit, and cold weather testing, intemperatures as low as minus 30 °C, wasundertaken in Sweden.

The Vantage Roadster is a compact designwith a spacious and beautifully appointedcabin. The large fuel tank and efficient enginemean that long stretches between refuellingare easy: up to 560 km (350 miles) of touringis possible.

The cabin has its everyday conveniences: as well as the good stowage space, there’san optional satellite navigation system with a 12 cm screen that retracts automaticallywhen not in use, and an optional integratedBluetooth preparation telephone (simplyinsert your SIM card into a drawer in themain instrument console). Everything is inplace to ensure that time spent in the cabinof the Roadster is as efficient andpleasurable as possible.

As well as the inherent strength of the car itself, the Vantage Roadster is full ofadvanced safety technology, including an array of electronic features. Its all-alloystructure makes for a very strong passengercell and further protection is offered bydeformable front and rear crumple zones, which help absorb crash energy andenhance driver and passenger protection.Excellent side impact protection is also in-built, thanks to the large sills, strong A-pillars,door impact beams, and the substantialdashboard and footwell structures.

The fuel tank is mounted amidships – goodnot only for safety but also for balance andhandling – and encased in its own aluminiumcompartment. Both driver and passengerbenefit from dual-stage airbags (deployed inone of two stages depending on the severityof the accident) and side airbags. As in theDB9 Volante, sensors help detect the risk of a potential rollover and two roll-hoops are deployed from the rear seat headrests.

In addition to all this, the Vantage Roadsterincorporates a suite of electronic safety aids, including Dynamic Stability Control(DSC) designed to help prevent wheelslippage or loss of traction, ElectronicBrakeforce Distribution (EBD) to help achieveoptimal braking balance, and EmergencyBrake Assist (EBA) which boosts pedalpressure when full braking is required in anemergency. Positive Torque Control (PTC)also acts to help minimise the likelihood ofthe rear wheels locking in an engine brakingsituation. Headlamps feature innovative LED(light-emitting diode) indicators and sidelights, and optional xenon dipped beamheadlights are available. The rear lampsemploy 360 LEDs for lights, brakes andindicators. As a result, they illuminate 200milliseconds faster than conventional brakelights, providing an additional full car lengthof stopping distance at 100 km/h (62 mph)for the following car. In real-life situations, that kind of detail can be critical, so it isreassuring to know that the VantageRoadster pays as much attention to safetyas it does to performance and handling.

The Reverso watch was developed in the 1930s in response to a very specificrequest. The brief was to create an elegant, sporting watch that could offer the wearertwo modes within one simple package:open faced, showing a carefully crafted dial, or closed and protected to shield the movement and crystal from possibledamage. The sport for which the watch was required was polo – arduous, energeticand dangerous, but also an environment in which a well-tooled precision wristwatchis very useful.

The Vantage Roadster shares an essentialcharacteristic with the Reverso watch. It is a car of two characters: open and visible, or closed and protective. The fully-linedfabric hood envelops the two-seater cockpit, providing unrivalled comfort and insulationfrom the outside world. Yet with the topdown – in a matter of seconds – thecharacter of the car is transformed. Like all Aston Martins, the Vantage Roadster isequally at home on the road or the track; itwas developed on a racing circuit, but makesa refined and relaxed long-distance tourer.

The production version of the V8 Vantagewas unveiled at the 2005 GenevaInternational Motor Show, joining theflagship Vanquish S and the DB9 models to complete Aston Martin’s line-up. The Vantage Roadster offers the uniqueattributes of the sporting Vantage Coupéwithin a flexible package. It is a true driver’s car that offers open-top motoring withoutcompromising its excellent dynamics, performance and usability.
