It is the single most important factor that determines the chances of child survival. Nearly 50% of neonatal deaths occur among LBW babies. The survivors among them are at a high risk of developing malnutrition, recurrent infections and neuro-developmental handicaps.

Dr. Dayanand and his team did the same with and early diagnosis and early treatment in a very challenging situation. The Dialysis department at Vaatsalya hospital, Shimoga, started on 16th October 2010, has had many proud achievements so far. They handle 320 dialysis cases every month, 12 Kidney Biopsies, 2 patients treated with Plasmaphersis, 48 CKD out patients for regular followup, No sero-conversion to Hepatitis B or Hepatitis C.

With expectant mothers eating less than necessary, the right amount of nutrition fails to reach the baby in the initial stages. Dr. Venkateswara Rao suggested that the best way to overcome this loss of nutrition is by eating malted food such as ragi, wheat flour or soya. The would-be mothers should also increase their protein intake in the second trimester while staying away from alcohol or cigarettes and trying to avoid stress.

village, Chincholi taluk was bitten by a snake on her hand while she was farming. She was immediately treated at a local Ayurvedic hospital in Chandapur village. She was taken home the next day, but she developed complications and was

Two weeks after she was bitten, she

developed complications like lung

and kidney failure. She was told,

she will not survive and was referred

to Vaatsalya Hospital Gulbarga. She

was admitted at Vaatsalya Hospital,

Gulbarga, with shortness of breath

and hypotension. The critical care

team of Vaatsalya hospital, swung

into action within minutes. She

was put on ventilator support and

immediately started on a special

form of dialysis called SLED

(Sustained Low-Efficiency Dialysis)

which can be done even if the blood

pressure is low. She was stabilized

for the moment but the doctors had

a huge task ahead.

Her hand was swollen and became

infected which caused multiple organ

failure. The infection caused failure

of the Lungs, Kidney, Heart, Liver

and Bone Marrow. Her chances of

survival were looking smaller by

the minute. Padmavati was treated

with multidisciplinary care which

involved a team of nephrologist,

intensivists and paramedics of the

critical care unit. She required

simultaneous ventilator support,

dialysis, surgery and broad spectrum

anti bodies.

gradually, her blood pressure

and liver functions stabilized by

day 3, kidneys and bone marrow

recovered by day 5 and slowly her

lungs also started recovering by day

7. She faced another hurdle as she

ventilator weaning regimen, higher

antibiotics. She gradually recovered

the 22nd day healthy and walking.

Around 70 patients availed of this facility and almost all of them had never had a foot exam. Foot sensation was measured using monofilament and Biothesiometer. Hope For All is a unique story of two nurses from Vaatsalya Hospital, Gulbarga, along with few social workers from Gulbarga who came together to form a non-religious, non-political and non-profit making organisation for the benefit of the society.

Mr.Vinod Kumar Katke, President of Hope for All and Mr.Jijo Jose, Secretary of Hope for All, have been a part of Vaatsalya Hospital, Gulbarga since it’s inception in the year 2009. Working as staff nurses, they face a wide range of emotions from their patients, the concerned families and friends, and it is not an easy job. Some families are thankful, some of them angry and some of them begging for mercy, but the most difficult emotion to face is on the occurrence of death. Vaatsalya’s Coroporate tie-up program was initiated to extend their services for the employees of various corporate companies, industries, schools and colleges, banks and co-operative societies in their respective cities. In the recent

past, the marketing team started interacting with companies to join hands with Vaatsalya Hospital to provide affordable healthcare facilities to their employees. Some of the companies who have tied up with Vaatsalya are -

for the hospital as well. The team of doctors and nurses try their best to save the patient, but when life is lost due to severe blood loss or due to unavailability of blood components, it is a feeling of hopelessness, loss and anger. Anger, when handled properly can lead to the creation of new ideas, strength to put the idea in motion and bring them to life.

Such situations left a

deep impact on Vinod and Jijo, and helped them start Hope for All. Hope for All started as a helping hand for patients who are in need of blood but do not have donors. They started with individual blood donations and realised that there was a very high demand for blood. They started asking

their friends and spread the word in other social circles and received an impressive response and within a month, they saved more than 20 lives.

So far, more than 40 lives have been saved through individual donations. Vaatsalya Hospitals wishes them

all the success in their future endeavors.

The Indian Academy of P e d i a t r i c s conducted the 13th National Conference of Pediatric Care from 16th to

20th November to focus on all the advances in pediatric critical care for paediatric intensivists, needs of paediatricians in managing paediatric emergencies and intensive care.

Dr. Anant Sagar, MD Pediatrics Consultant Pediatrician at Vaatsalya Hospital, Vizianagaram spoke about a case he had recently handled where a 3 year old child was diagnosed with Status Epilepticus, a life-threatening condition in which the brain is in a persistent state of seizure.

His talk was well appreciated by everybody present.

Suzlon wind power Ltd., Gadag, ABC trading company Ltd., (Coffee Day), Hassan, Ken Agri Tech., Hubli, Bajjargi Motors, Bijapur, Sri Siddeswara Co-Operative Bank, Bijapur, Basaweswara Co-Op.Society, Shimoga, City Cooperative Society, Shimoga, VKG motors, GulbargaSuzlon Wind Power Ltd., organised a health check-up program for it’s employees at Vaatsalya Hospital, Gadag in the month of October 2011. Around 50 employees of Suzlon were given basic health check-up at a reduced price.
