Match background

A rare UEFA Champions League victory for Rosenborg BK in the fixture between these sides in Norway on 24 Octobermeans the pressure is on Valencia CF to win the return match and with both teams' coaches having since left theirrespective positions, an intriguing dimension has been added to this Group B game. The Spanish side trailsecond-placed Rosenborg by a point and know a third successive defeat in the competition could seriously hindertheir chances of going through.

• It all began so well for Valencia when David Villa's second-half strike earned them a victory away to FC Schalke 04on Matchday 1. However that was followed by a home defeat against Chelsea FC and then the 2-0 reverse in Trondheimwhere Yssouf Koné and Vidar Riseth scored in an eight-minute spell shortly after half-time to boost Rosenborg'schallenge.

• The same game was also Quique Sánchez Flores' last European fixture in charge at Valencia after he was dismissedfollowing their 3-0 Primera División defeat by Sevilla FC, the Spanish side's next match after the Matchday 3 meetingwith Rosenborg.

• Should Rosenborg complete the "double" over the 2000 and 2001 UEFA Champions League runners-up it will beonly their second success in 21 games on the road in the competition. They began this campaign with an away fixtureand emerged with great credit following a 1-1 draw at Chelsea FC in what proved to be José Mourinho's final gamein charge of the London club.

• Miika Koppinen put the visitors ahead before half-time before Andriy Shevchenko snatched an equaliser. Hopeswere high that Rosenborg could then build on that result at home to FC Schalke 04 but the German side scored twosecond-half goals to claim their first points in the campaign.

• The other game in Group B features Schalke at home to Chelsea. The visitors can secure a place in the next stageshould they win and Rosenborg do the same at Mestalla.

Match facts

Valencia

• Six Valencia players have appeared in all five UEFA Champions League games so far this season, includingqualifying: Raúl Albiol, Carlos Marchena, Emiliano Moretti, Joaquín, Fernando Morientes and David Silva.

• Marchena is within one booking of a suspension having collected yellow cards on Matchdays 1 and 2.

• Valencia returned to winning ways in the Primera División by defeating RCD Mallorca 2-0 away from home onSaturday. Morientes scored Valencia's first on the stroke of half-time, shooting into an empty goal after goalkeeperGermán Lux had failed to deal with a cross, before adding his and the visitors' second on 61 minutes when he convertedfrom Silva's fine pass.

• Albiol was suspended for the game after his red card in Valencia's previous game against Real Madrid CF.

• Marchena and Rubén Baraja were both ruled out of the match with thigh injuries while Santiago Cañizares andDavid Villa both continue recoveries from hip and ankle problems respectively. Alexis, meanwhile, was carried offwith a knee injury after four minutes with Luis Miguel coming on.

• On Monday Alexis was ruled out for four months after test revealed he had sprained the posterior cruciate ligamentsin his left knee against Mallorca.

• Óscar Fernández took charge of the team for the last time following Quique Sánchez Flores' dismissal while newcoach Ronald Koeman looked on.

• Fernández said: "My team responded extraordinarily well to the challenges this game threw up. I only have wordsof praise for everyone tonight, especially for their part in the last 25 minutes of the first half when we played with order, concentration and with everyone perfectly placed on the pitch. My first line of defence was Fernando Morientes andmy last was Timo Hildebrand."

• The result against Mallorca was Valencia's first win in three games and only their second in seven matches in allcompetitions.

• It continued a run of Valencia drawing none of their 16 games in all competitions this season. They have won tenand lost six.

• Koeman's first game in charge will be the UEFA Champions League encounter with Rosenborg. The former FCBarcelona defender was unveiled at Mestalla last week and admitted: "We have to win our remaining games in theChampions League to have our destiny in our own hands."

• Having lost at Rosenborg, Valencia travelled to Sevilla FC looking for three Primera División points on 28 October, but instead slipped to another defeat. The home side took the lead in the ninth minute when Albiol failed to deal withLuis Fabiano's cross and Frédéric Kanouté pounced to shoot low past Hildebrand. Christian Poulsen made it 2-0with 18 minutes left before Daniel Alves and Renato combined for their fellow Brazilian Luis Fabiano to add a thirdgoal in the 85th minute.

• Vicente Rodríguez finally returned to action for Valencia as a substitute having played just one competitive gamefor the club since last April.

• "We were clearly behind Sevilla, we were the inferior team," said coach Sánchez Flores. "I accept all the responsibility. We have to take a step forward. The most important thing is that the team finds some stability."

• Marchena added: "Nothing worked for us, it was a sad defeat. We lost to a great team. When we lose, theresponsibility is on all of us. We have to keep working together because we have important games coming up. Aboveall we need to be patient."

• The match proved to be Sánchez Flores's last in charge as he was dismissed in the early hours of 29 Octoberfollowing an emergency board meeting. "After analysing the team's situation, which is considered to be irretrievableafter defeats in the league and the UEFA Champions League, the board has decided to dismiss Quique SánchezFlores," said a club statement.

• The former Getafe CF coach, who succeeded Claudio Ranieri in summer 2005, said: "On one hand I feel disappointedbut on the other I'm relieved. I want to thank Valencia for giving me the opportunity to coach a top-class team and forgiving me enough space to allow me to continue growing as a coach."

• Youth team coach Fernández took over first-team duties for Valencia's home match with Real Madrid CF on 31October.

• The change of coach failed to galvanise the team, however, as Madrid ran out 5-1 winners at Mestalla, scoring fourtimes in the first 36 minutes. Raúl González opened the scoring in the second minute and Ruud van Nistelrooy addedfurther goals either side of a Sergio Ramos strike on the half-hour. Miguel Ángel Angulo reduced the deficit twominutes before the hour but Robinho made it 5-1 six minutes later and Valencia's misery was complete when Albiolwas dismissed in the 84th minute after a foul on Robinho.

• "We allowed them in with a simple [early] goal, the second goal was a mistake by us and in the third we gave awaypossession with what should have been an easy pass," said Fernández. "It hurts. We have to try and lift the dressingroom because we have an important match at the weekend. Today we saw a Madrid team on top of their game andwe have to congratulate them."

• "When you concede in the first minute it's always difficult trying to get back into the game," added Juan Mata, wholeft Madrid for Valencia in the summer. "In the first half they were clearly the superior team while in the second thingsevened out more. Of course the dressing room is down but we have to turn the page and concentrate on our nextgame. We have to try to get back to being the team that went on a run of victories a month ago."

• The Madrid loss was Valencia's third in succession in all competitions and fifth in their last six games.

• Valencia subsequently announced that PSV Eindhoven coach Koeman had agreed to replace Sánchez Flores, signing a contract until 2010. "In life you get opportunities, and I grab them, that is how I am," said the formerNetherlands international, who started his career as a head coach at BV Vitesse in 2000 prior to spells at AFC Ajax,SL Benfica and PSV. "It's all happened very fast but I had always wanted to come to a big Spanish club," addedKoeman on his unveiling.

• "Valencia are a team with good quality players and it's a question of finding the right balance," the Dutchmancontinued. "They have very demanding supporters and football is for the public to enjoy. I am very excited aboutcoaching Valencia and taking the team where they deserve to be."

• Sporting director Miguel Ángel Ruiz believes the new coach is the man to revive Valencia's fortunes, saying:"Koeman is very excited about the move because he sees coaching in Spain as a challenge. Koeman knows he'scoming to an extremely competitive club and we expect the maximum from him. We agreed to sign him because ofhis style, his working methods, charisma and experience. However, the club has reminded the players it's up to themto pull through. The coach can try working methods but that's no use without the players responding."

• For his part, club captain David Albelda said: "It's time for us to be united and stop worrying about stupid things. There have been tough moments in my career but of those I can remember, the defeat against Madrid is one of mytoughest days but we have to get over it. We have to put the anxiety behind us and see things positively, look to findour personality, work hard and get involved and start working as a team because it's more important to win pointsthan to play well."

• Villa continues his recuperation from an injury to his left ankle.

• Marchena and Baraja both have thigh injuries which kept them out of the Madrid game while Cañizares is continuinghis recovery from a hip problem.

• Valencia's Mestalla home is one of five stadiums vying to host the 2010 and 2011 UEFA Champions League finals:the Fußball Arena München in Munich, Berlin's Olympiastadion, the Santiago Bernabéu in Madrid and London'sWembley Stadium are the other venues in contention. A final decision is expected to be made by the UEFA ExecutiveCommittee at its meeting in Liechtenstein in March.

Rosenborg

• Rosenborg have no players suspended or within a yellow card of a ban.

• Rosenborg rounded off their Tippeligaen campaign with a 2-1 win at Ålesunds FK on Saturday evening to end theNorwegian league season in fifth position. Ålesund took a sixth-minute lead when Miika Koppinen turned a JeffreyAubynn cross into his own net but Rosenborg rallied and, after creating several presentable opportunities, drew levelin the 34th minute, Koné finding the net after a slick one-two with Tettey. The visitors' task was made easier whenTrond Fredriksen was sent off early in the second half and Rosenborg got their winner when Sapara sent a low shotinto the net 18 minutes from time.

• "We have worked a lot with our attacking play and I also sensed the players were more up for the battle now," saidRosenborg caretaker coach Trond Henriksen, who has led the side to victory in each of his first two matches incharge. "This win was important in building confidence before the trip to Valencia."

• The victory was Rosenborg's fourth in succession in all competitions yet only their third away from home in theleague and their first 2-1 success since the win at Odd Grenland on 18 June. "It felt really good to finally win awayfrom home again," said Henriksen.

• The Rosenborg coach was deprived of Roar Strand due to a leg injury while Riseth (flu), Dorsin (back) andChrister Basma (suspension) were also ruled out. In their absence, Koppinen was recalled to the side for the firsttime since a 4-1 home win against Odd on 7 October.

• Knut Tørum may have masterminded the 2-0 victory against Valencia, but Rosenborg had a disappointing leagueseason as they surrendered their Norwegian title and the coach officially stepped down the morning after the UEFAChampions League win.

• "I have to thank everyone at the club for a wonderful time," said Tørum. "I will never forget what I went through here, good and bad."

• Assistant Henriksen, a former Rosenborg player and youth coach, has taken over for the rest of the UEFA ChampionsLeague group stage. "When Knut Tørum resigned he wanted me to take over," Henriksen said. "Tørum was my bestfriend at Rosenborg and I listened to his advice."

• Under Henriksen, Rosenborg brushed FC Lyn Oslo aside 3-0 at the Lerkendal Stadium on 28 October. Koné openedthe scoring after 26 minutes with a header, Strand doubled the lead nine minutes later before Sapara rounded offthe scoring from close range moments before the final whistle.

• Riseth struggled with illness during the game against Lyn, but remained on the field for the full 90 minutes.

• Henriksen, who kept faith with the same lineup that started against Valencia, said: "The most important thing is thatwe won. My role in this is not very important."

• Bjørn Tore Kvarme is retiring at the end of the season, with Strand expected to follow suit. The latter was namedas an honorary member of the club before the game against Lyn.

• They are not the only players headed for the exit door after two of Rosenborg's defensive stalwarts signed for newclubs on the same day. Koppinen chose to rejoin Tromsø IL, the club from which Rosenborg recruited him, whileDorsin signed a deal with Romanian side CFR 1907 Cluj until the summer of 2011. Like Kvarme and Strand, Koppinenand Dorsin will remain at Rosenborg for the rest of the group stage.

Head coach

Valencia CF: Ronald KoemanDate of birth: 21 March 1963Nationality: DutchPlaying career: FC Groningen, AFC Ajax, PSV Eindhoven, FC Barcelona, FeyenoordCoaching career: Netherlands (assistant coach), FC Barcelona (assistant coach), BV Vitesse, AFC Ajax, SL Benfica,PSV Eindhoven, Valencia CF

Ronald Koeman bounced back quickly from a disappointing end to his reign at AFC Ajax in February 2005, taking upthe vacant position at SL Benfica following the departure of legendary Italian Giovanni Trapattoni. He guided theLisbon club to the last eight of the UEFA Champions League and third place in Portugal before accepting the challengeof following Guus Hiddink at PSV Eindhoven in May 2006. Despite a difficult domestic campaign, Koeman had thelast laugh by winning the Eredivisie title on the final day of a thrilling 2006/07 season before leaving to take over atValencia CF in October 2007.

Ajax's fortunes suffered a steady decline after Koeman got off to a brilliant start at the Amsterdam ArenA, winning adomestic double in 2001/02. Despite regaining the title in 2003/04, Ajax had fallen behind rivals PSV as the Netherlands'top team, and Koeman resigned after UEFA Cup elimination. It was no surprise he found his way to Eindhoven, asKoeman was a member of the PSV side that overcame Benfica in the 1988 European Champion Clubs' Cup final, converting the opening kick in PSV's 6-5 penalty shoot-out victory after 120 goalless minutes.

As well as being an accomplished sweeper, Koeman was a free-kick expert, and it was from a dead-ball that he scoredFC Barcelona's winning goal in the 1992 European Cup final. Koeman and brother Erwin started out at their father'sold club, FC Groningen, and were later members of the Netherlands side which won the 1988 UEFA EuropeanChampionship. It was a momentous year, Koeman also winning the European Cup and Dutch double, and paved theway for a move to Barça in 1989 where he would win another four Spanish titles. Rosenborg BK: Trond HenriksenDate of birth: 28 April 1964Nationality: NorwegianPlaying career: Nidelv IL, Rosenborg BKCoaching career: Rosenborg BK

A Rosenborg BK legend for his decade as a tough-tackling right-back, Trond Henriksen has now risen up the coachingranks at the club. Trondheim-born Henriksen had won Norway Under-16 caps at local side Nidelv IL and was 18 whensigned by Rosenborg in 1983. His no-nonsense style of play earned him the nickname 'Rambo' and the affection ofthe Rosenborg fans.

Initially working as a postman while playing semi-professionally before turning full-time, Henriksen helped Rosenborgto Tippeligaen titles in 1985, 1988, 1990, 1992 and 1993, completing domestic doubles in the middle three of thoseseasons. Eventually retiring in 1993 after 193 league appearances and ten goals, he later returned to Rosenborg asyouth coach. Henriksen led the junior team to Norwegian Youth Cup success in 2005, then assisted Knut Tørum whenthe latter took charge of the senior side the following summer with Per-Mathias Høgmo on sick leave.

After securing the title, Tørum and Henriksen were installed permanently but the 2007 campaign was a disappointmentand with the championship lost, Tørum left his post. There were still three UEFA Champions League group stagegames to play, with Rosenborg usefully placed, and the club continued their long-held policy of appointing from withinand turned to Henriksen, handing him a two-year deal. "When Knut Tørum resigned, he wanted me to take over,"Henriksen said. "Tørum was my best friend at Rosenborg, and I listened to his advice."

UEFA information

FARE Action WeekThe eighth annual Football Against Racism in Europe (FARE) network Action Week closes with organisers delightedat the pan-European drive to emphasise the message that racism, intolerance and violence have no place in football. The FARE Action Week is co-ordinated by the FARE network in co-operation with UEFA. Activities have been designedto raise awareness of the issues and underline football's determination to tackle them. Initiatives have been led by –among others – campaigning non-governmental organisations, fan groups, clubs, national associations, ethnicminorities, youth groups and schools.

Every high-profile platform has been used by the football community to highlight the fight against racism. From UEFAChampions League and UEFA EURO 2008™ matches to domestic league games across the continent, the signal tothe racists has been clear – get out of our game. UEFA's flagship club competition, the UEFA Champions League, showcased the FARE/UEFA activities on Matchday 3, with all 32 teams displaying their opposition to racism as partof UEFA's contribution to the FARE Action Week.

Europe's leading leagues have also been making a stand against racism. All professional clubs in England andScotland regularly participate and the German Bundesliga expanded its engagement over two weekends so all sidesin the top two divisions had the chance to take part in the anti-racist activity at a home match. The leagues were alsoactive in Austria, the Republic of Ireland, F.Y.R. Macedonia, Portugal, Serbia and Slovenia. For the first time, Israelhas joined in the Action Week, together with Greece, Sweden and Switzerland as much-valued newcomers. Anti-racistactivities have been organised by fan clubs at league fixtures in Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, France,England, Germany, Greece, Italy, Poland, Portugal, Russia, Scotland, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Switzerlandand Ukraine.

FARE matchUEFA gave further support to the FARE Action Week by staging a match in Nyon, Switzerland, on 29 October. Ateam composed of UEFA staff members played against footballers from the Organisation Sportive Africa-Suisse atthe Colovray Stadium opposite UEFA's headquarters. Before the game, the visitors were shown around UEFA'sHouse of European Football and viewed the many European trophies on display, before emerging as 3-1 winners onthe pitch.

"We want to see the 'beautiful game' played without the cancer of racism," says FARE. "Football is the biggest sportin the world and belongs to us all. It should be the right of every person to play, watch and discuss it freely, withoutfear. Unfortunately, at all levels of the game, from amateur to international, there are incidents of racism. Be it fromfans, players, clubs or other football bodies, FARE believes that such behaviour, on and off the field, is unacceptableand unwanted by the majority of fans and players."

Cerebral Palsy finalsThe Cerebral Palsy International Sports and Recreation Association (CPISRA) – which received UEFA's annualCHF1m charity cheque in 2007 – has held the draw for the CPISRA Football Seven-a-Side World Championship tobe held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in mid-November with 16 teams divided into four groups of four. Founded in 1978,CPISRA is an international governing sports body for athletes with cerebral palsy or traumatic brain injury, stroke andother related conditions. CPISRA has its own version of football, a modified seven-a-side game that has been playedby athletes with cerebral palsy for many years.

• UEFA Champions League: Group stage milestones

Holders AC Milan will be keen to avoid becoming the first defending champions to fail to get through a group stagesince the UEFA Champions League began. (This record, like the others, includes the seasons between 1999/00 and2002/03 that featured a second group stage)

In 1992/93, FC Barcelona were the reigning European Champion Clubs' Cup holders and were beaten 4-3 on aggregatein the second round by PFC CSKA Moskva.

S.S. Lazio goalkeeper Marco Ballotta is the oldest player to compete in the UEFA Champions League, taking to thefield against Werder Bremen on 24 October 2007 at the age of 43 years and 204 days. The record was previouslyheld by Alessandro Costacurta, the AC Milan defender who played against AEK Athens FC in the 2006/07 season atthe age of 40 years and 211 days. Laurent Blanc is the oldest player to score in the competition, aged 36 years and339 days having found the net for Manchester United FC in their 3-2 defeat of Olympiacos CFP on 23 October 2002.

Celestine Babayaro is the youngest player to have appeared in the UEFA Champions League. He was 16 years and87 days when he started for RSC Anderlecht against FC Steaua Bucuresti on 23 November 1994. He was then sentoff in the 37th minute.

In 2006/07, PFC Levski Sofia joined 1. FC Košice in being the only team to have played in the UEFA ChampionsLeague and never picked up a point. The Slovakian side have not returned to the competition since losing all sixgames in their only campaign to date in 1997/98. Only five other teams have ever gone through a single group stagecampaign without picking up a point namely SK Rapid Wien (05/06), RSC Anderlecht (04/05), FC Spartak Moskvaand Bayer 04 Leverkusen (02/03, first and second group stage respectively) and Fenerbahçe SK (01/02, first groupstage).

Levski also conceded 17 goals in their six outings last term, just two short of the record number let in during a groupstage set by Ferencvárosi TC (19) in the 1995/96 campaign.

Before their 3-1 win against Sporting Clube de Portugal on Matchday 6 of the 2006/07 campaign, FC Spartak Moskvawent 22 games without a win in the competition, surpassing the unwanted record set by AEK Athens FC on Matchday3 of the same campaign.

The lowest total for a team qualifying from the group stage is seven points. The first to do it, since three points for awin was introduced in 1995/96, were Legia Warszawa that same season before Bayer 04 Leverkusen managed it in1999/00 and Liverpool FC in 2001/02. FC Lokomotiv Moskva and eventual finalists Juventus both progressed withseven points in 2002/03, a feat achieved by Rangers FC and Werder Bremen in 2005/06.

Competition information

UEFA's most prestigious club competition was originally created as the European Champion Clubs' Cup for the1955/56 season, before its revamping as the UEFA Champions League in 1992.

• Format: The UEFA Champions League group stage draw in Monaco on 31 August saw the 32 teams divided intoeight groups of four. Clubs from the same association could not be drawn into the same group. Each club plays onehome and one away match against each other club in its group. Three points are awarded for a win, one point for adraw and no points for a defeat. If two or more teams are equal on points on completion of the group matches, thefollowing criteria are applied to determine the rankings.a) higher number of points obtained in the group matches played among the teams in question;b) superior goal difference from the group matches played among the teams in question;c) higher number of goals scored away from home in the group matches played among the teams in question;d) superior goal difference from all group matches played;e) higher number of goals scored;f) higher number of coefficient points accumulated by the club in question as well as its association, over the previousfive seasons. The eight group-winners and eight runners-up of the group stage qualify for the first knockout round, to be playedover two legs on 19/20 February and 4/5 March 2007. The clubs that finish this stage in third position in their groupmove into the Round of 32 of the UEFA Cup. The clubs that finish this stage in fourth position in their group areeliminated from UEFA club competition for the season. This year's UEFA Champions League final is in Moscow on21 May 2008.

• Disciplinary information: As a rule, a player who is sent off the field of play is suspended for the next match in aUEFA club competition. The Control and Disciplinary Body is entitled to augment this punishment. In the case ofrepeated cautions, a player is suspended for one match after three cautions in three different matches, as well asfollowing any subsequent odd-numbered caution (fifth, seventh, ninth, etc). Single yellow cards and pending suspensionsare always carried forward either to the next stage of the competition or to another club competition in the currentseason.

• Locally-trained players rule: In February 2005, UEFA announced the 'A' list that teams submit for UEFA clubcompetitions will continue to be limited to 25 players, and from season 2007/08, at least six places will be reservedfor players trained by the club's own football academy of which half can be players trained by other clubs from withinthe same association of the said club. The 'B' list will also continue to exist - involving an unlimited number of Under-21players who have been at the club for two seasons. In 2006/07, the number of locally-trained players required beganat four but the current six will rise to eight in 2008/09, with up to half of each figure allowed to be association trained.A club-trained player is defined as a player who has been registered for a minimum of three seasons with the clubbetween the age of 15 and 21, whereas an association-trained player is one who has been registered for at leastthree seasons by the club or by other clubs affiliated to the same association between the age of 15 and 21.

• Player registration: UEFA regulations state that for all UEFA Champions League matches from the start of the firstknockout round, a club may register a maximum of three new eligible players within their squad of 25 for the remainingmatches in the current competition. Such registration must be completed by 1 February at the latest. One player fromthe above quota of three who has played UEFA club competition matches for another competing club in the currentseason may exceptionally be registered, provided that the player has not been fielded by another club in the UEFAChampions League this season.

• Financial information: UEFA says the estimated gross income for the 2007/08 UEFA Champions League is €824.5m– slightly higher than the 2006/07 campaign revenue. Under the competition regulations, 75 per cent of the totalrevenue received from television and commercial contracts concluded by UEFA, up to a maximum of €530m will goto the 32 teams taking part in the group stage of Europe's premier club competition. The remaining 25 per cent isearmarked for European football and remains with UEFA to cover organisational and administrative costs, as well asfor solidarity payments to associations, clubs and leagues.

It is also stipulated that participating clubs will receive 82 per cent of any revenue received from the same stream inexcess of €530m, with the remaining 18 per cent allocated to UEFA for European football. In addition, 50 per cent ofthe revenue received from new media contracts concluded by UEFA will also be available for distribution to the clubs, and the remaining 50 per cent will be allocated to the above-mentioned European football portion/quota.

The gross income for 2007/08 is estimated at €824.5m, and according to projections, will be made up of €819m fromTV and commercial contracts and €5.5m from new media contracts. The total amount to be distributed to the clubsis €588.6m. Each of the 32 clubs in the group stage will receive a starting bonus of €3m. In addition, they will receivea match bonus of €400,000 per match. Performance bonuses will amount to €600,000 for a win and €300,000 for adraw in the group stage. The 16 teams playing in the first knockout round will receive €2.2m, the eight quarter-finalists€2.5m each and the four semi-finalists €3m each. The UEFA Champions League winners will receive €7m, and therunners-up €4m.

This means that a total minimum amount of €5.4m per club is guaranteed for the group stage. A club could receive,at best, up to €23.7m, not counting the market pool share and gate receipts. The remaining €280m will be distributedaccording to the proportional value of each TV market represented by the clubs taking part in the UEFA ChampionsLeague, and to be split among the number of teams – four, three, two or one – participating from a given association.
