Personal Training with Mary Brown

Bring on the New Year and revamp your Fitness with our PersonalTrainer, Mary Brown. You may want to improve your golf or tennisgame. Get the accountability and guidance on how to do exercisesproperly along with encouragement to get the results you desire. Buildyour skills. Consider a trainer. Start today by calling the Pro Shop formore information.

Every response is unique. Unfortunately, there is no “normalresponse to exercise. Some clients simply will not respond cardioexercise or will respond very little while others will responddramatically.

Resistance training is another avenue for turning non responders intoresponders. In addition to burning calories, resistance helps clientsimprove fitness, reduce weight and body fat, increase bone mineraldensity and improve self-confidence. Artero et al. (2012) did a reviewof literature on the effects of increased muscle strength and found thatit has a protective effect on all-cause and cancer mortality in healthymiddle aged men, men with hypertension and patients with heartdisease.

Increased muscle strength is associated with reductions in weight andfat, a lower risk of hypertension and decreased prevalence ofmetabolic syndrome. The benefits of resistance training includedimprovements in sports and fitness performance, movement control, walking speed (in the elderly), functional independence (for theelderly), cognitive abilities and self-esteem. Moreover, resistancetraining can promote bone development, with studies showing a 1% -3% increase in bone mass density. This type of exercise has also beenshown to reduce low back pain and decrease the discomfort ofarthritis and fibromyalgia.

Contact the Tennis Pro Shop front desk for information on a Program DesignPackage.Thank you,Your Trainer, Mary Brown

If you play golf, you createdivots - it is part of the game.

If you create divots, youshould also repair them -

that's part of the etiquette ofthe game.

On The Rules by Bruce Flower Page 6

A 2017 Basic Primer We are fortunate at MCC to be expe-riencing a period of unprecedentedgrowth and use of our facilities. Moreand more people are enjoying our cam-pus, equaled by few Clubs. That’s thegood news. The bad news is our pri-mary asset, the golf course, is undermore stress than ever because of in-creased play on all three nines. We allhave a heightened responsibility tobe aware of the following. Please con-sider this MANDATORY READING FORALL MEMBERS USING THE GOLFCOURSE. It is imperative to play ready golf andotherwise follow the instructions of allGolf Pro Shop personnel. The Rules of Golf contemplate certainstandards of player conduct on thecourse, and this can be found in SectionI of the Rules, which is titled Etiquette:Behavior on the Course. This primarylocation of player conduct in theRules is a clear indication of the priorityand importance they are to be given. The game relies on the integrity ofthe individual to show consideration forother players and to abide by the Rules. The spirit of the game requires courtesyand sportsmanship at all times, irre-spective of how competitive the play. The following should be sacred rulesfor all players at all clubs during everyround played:

Safety: When you make a stroke orpractice swing, make sure no one isstanding so close as to be hit by a club, the ball, stones, twigs or the like. Thisincludes green staff nearby or ahead.Do not play until the players in front areout of range. The traditional word ofwarning, “fore” was used for the veryfirst time in the 2004 revision of Rules. Consideration: Do not disturb or dis-

tract other players in their play bymoving, talking, making unnecessarynoise, or using electronic devices. (Yes,this means turn your cell phone off, orbetter yet; leave it in the car.) Don’t teeyour ball or stand in the teeing rounduntil it is your turn to play. A playershould not stand on another’s line ofputt or cast a shadow in his line of puttor area of intended swing. Pace of Play: Keep up with the groupin front and be ready to play when it isyour turn to play. Analyze your shotand choose your club while others areplaying. Place your bag or park yourcart in a position that will afford aquick exit off the green and toward thenext tee. If you believe your ball maybe lost outside of a hazard or out ofbounds, play a provisional ball. Ofcourse, if you are holding up the groupbehind you, invite them to playthrough. Care of the Course: a) Replace divots- A player should ensure that ANY DIV-OT HOLE IS CAREFULLY REPAIRED. Nev-er take a divot during a practice swing.Remember Payne Stewart’s ball com-ing to rest in a divot hole on No. 12during the 1998 U.S. Open? Some play-ers would like divot holes to be groundunder repair, but divot holes are partof the game, aren’t they? So are treeroots. b) Repair ball marks - Any dam-age to the putting green made by aball (not necessarily the player’s ball)should be carefully repaired. It is goodpractice to repair a ball mark, whichtakes less than 6 seconds to accom-plish, and can heal within 48 hours.Others take up to three weeks. It isclear from the condition of some of ourgreens some players overlook this im-portant consideration. If your shot waslow, it most likely made a pitch markanyway, so please search for and re-

pair it. Also, under no circumstances removeyour ball from the hole with a club. The chanceof damaging the lip of the hole is extremelyhigh, resulting in untold problems for playersand officials. c) Rake bunkers - The Rule reads“Before leaving a bunker a player should care-fully fill up and smooth over all holes and foot-prints made” by him. We’ve all had theunfortunate experience of having to blast outof someone’s footprint, often resulting in apoor outcome and a few choice terms of en-dearment for the player who left the footprint. Lastly, golf is a game of honor, courtesy, andintegrity. During a recent U.S. Senior Open, Iwas aghast at the conduct of one player in par-ticular, who has an international reputation, and who spent much of the round throwingclubs and using foul language. His conductwas an insult to him and an affront to thegame. Always remember to honor yourself andthe game through your conduct and courtesyboth on and off the course. This is one of theprimary principles that separates golf fromall other sports.

Happy golfing and keep it in the short grass!
