VALENTINE'S DAY EDITION... VOL.1, ISSUE 4

The Happy Health Hub's Special Valentine's Day Issue:

IS YOUR SEX LIFE A LITTLE PROCESSED, OR CERTIFIED ORGANIC?

DO YOU KNOW THAT MORE SEX DOESN'T EQUAL MORE HAPPINESS?

As a natural health prac-t it ioner and as a student of health and wellness, we have long studied the aspects of the holist ic health paradigm. As in-dividuals we have a physical na-ture, a spir itual nature, and a mental/emot ional nature. As Americans we are all too famil-iar with the physical, mental, and emot ional aspects of human sexuality, especially the physi-cal. In today's hyper sexualized society it is of ten too easy to get the wrong impression when it comes to understanding an-other's advances or intent ions. I t seems like too many are overly focused on the physical aspects of sex and sexuality, but

in order to have a more holist ic or organic experience we need to incorporate a more whole person view of health into this area of our lives as well. Author Susan Sayler, has a holist ic love theory that reconciles sex, ro-mant ic love, and spir itual love into one comprehensive model showing how one form of love naturally f lows into the next. At least , this is how it should work, since scient ists will show that love is a strategy for re-product ion of the f i t test , but won?t accept any thing about spir itual love. Spir itualists like the holist ic not ions of love and sex, but will deny any claim that body chemistry has a huge control over our mind, prefer-r ing to believe that whatever you imagine is subject to the law of at t ract ion and will over-rule biology. This has lead to some cutt ing age research in the f ield of neuroscience that has allowed us to dispel some myths about love and produce some solid facts. For instance, there is one stage of love that is completely directed by the pre-dominance of certain hormones and brain chemistry in our hu-man physiology. We are under the inf luence of a powerful body chemistry and if we ab-solutely understood this, we

might approach our love li fe dif -ferent ly. By understanding more of these facts, we can achieve a t ransformat ive change of heart in our approach to love and sex. The romant ic in- love experience is primari ly regulated by the brain's limbic system that seems to follow the exact same brain pathway as all human addict ions with many glands on the go like; the adrenals, pituitary, go-nads/ovaries, even the skin. I t seems to be chemically ident ical in the brain to obsessive/compul-sive disorder. See:

To really understand love, the challenge in science is to

f irst accept that there are non-physical aspects of our

existence that is more abstract ? but st i ll very real.

Thomas Moore, in his art icle, " The 10 Erot ic

Commandments of Having Tantric, Spir itual Sex,"

discusses quite f rankly these non-physical aspects of

love and sex. Check it out by clicking here:

M ore Sex D oes Not Guarantee M ore H appiness...Researchers at Carnegie Mellon University and elsewhere recruited 64 adult couples, all married and heterosexual, and asked the volunteers how often they had sex, how enjoyable it was and how happy they were in general. Half the couples, picked randomly, were assigned to go about their l ives as usual; the rest were told to double the frequency of sexual relations. If they had sex once a month, make it twice; couples who had sex three times a week were to go to six.The subjects were also tasked with completing a short daily onlinequestionnaire for the experiment's duration, which was 90 days, about the amount and quality of their sex the previous day and theirsubsequent moods. Some couples in the experimental group actuallydid manage to double the rate of intercourse, and on average therewas a 40 percent increase. Interestingly, this did not make them happier. In fact, their well-being declined.

- Lose weight/maintain weight

- Eat healthier- Get physically active- Manage blood pressure- Reduce blood sugar- Stop smoking- Control cholesterol

levels- Manage stress

(American Heart Association, 2014)

American Heart MonthAs someone that comes from a family that is predisposed

to heart disease, I understand how important it is to be heart conscious. Eating right and getting exercise are important for you and your family.  According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), about 610,000 people in the U.S die of heart disease every year, with Coronary Artery Disease being the most common form of heart disease (2015).  Coronary Artery Disease is caused by plaque that is made up of cholesterol and other substances that build up in the walls of the artery and cause narrowing.  This restricts blood f low to the heart and the rest of the body.  High cholesterol contributes to this disease.

Another contributing factor to heart disease is hypertension, also known as high blood pressure. According to the American Heart Association, if left untreated, high blood pressure can cause damage to the heart and coronary arteries, induce a stroke, cause vision loss, and other health consequences.  Hypertension is considered the ?silent kil ler? because it has no symptoms (2014).  For more information on high blood pressure, visit www.heart.org or see your physician.

There are some things that can be done to lessen your risk of heart disease. Healthy eating, physical activity, weight management, and stress management are all important in helping to reduce your risk.  Also, having yearly checkups with your doctor can help you take control of your health and help prevent diseases.  For more information on this and other heart healthy tips, visit www.heart.org.

Remember, taking control of your health is the f irst step in prevention.

Having a conversat ion about money can be hard enough, so before you talk about a plan:

Make a date of it ? If the date is not solely about f inances, it gives one or both of you the chance to express how you are feeling about money and bring up a couple ways to solve any issues. The more casual the setting helps ideas f low freely and reduces the chance of an argument.

Take a walk- Taking the pressure off of the already tough interaction by walking (which can also relieve stress) will help to keep distractions away from both parties and potentially relieve tension about the situation. This will leave at least a small amount of t ime to start the conversation and iron out issues that can be avoided when the f inal decisions are made.

Don?t let finances get between you and the one you love.

Daily happiness is achievable but not often as easy as it seems. Good sleep habits, eating healthy and exercising a few ways to relieve stress, which gives more opportunity for positivity, but other factors can hinder these activit ies. One hindrance in particular that affects individuals on a daily basis is f inances, more specif ically saving for an emergency or at all. According to an article on truth-out.org, f if ty percent of people do not save and the majority of those who do are in the wealthy category. With many savings accounts being at basically zero interest (0.01% ), the incentive to gain interest is not there; using the stock market is risky and the accounts which hold the money are not FDIC insured; and retirement savings that actually gain considerable interest cannot be accessed without a huge penalty. So while the problem may not just be the stress of actually saving but whether it is actually worth it, saving does create a more positive outlook on f inances and there are ways to do this on a daily basis.

Move money into a savings account through automatic transfers. No, the interest is not very good on most accounts, but if you make the effort more about putting the money away for safe-keeping, it adds value to your life and takes stress off your shoulders especially in case of an emergency. A great way to transfer money is without having to physically push the button every time, and banks, l ike Wells Fargo, have services that will transfer money into your savings every time you swipe your card. When the customer swipes their debit card, a dollar moves from the checking account to their savings account. The dollars accumulate throughout the day and move over towards the end. It takes a bit of planning, as well as attention to online banking, to make sure there if enough money to transfer, but the result of having that money set aside will make them worthwhile. At the end of each month, take a look at how much is in the savings account. Even if it is a small amount, the extra funds will give you a positive, emotional boost. (Continue on next page...)

HEALTH & WELLNESS SURVEY:

SMALL ACTIONS TODAY CAN REAP BIG REWARDS TOMORROW. START SMALL , BUT START TODAY...

Pay for most daily expenses with cash and put the excess in a jar. This method has proved useful for people who see extra money in their account and immediately spend it. Whether it is in a checking or saving account, if it is l iquid then the money seems available. These days online banking is the way each person checks their balances, and debit or credit cards are how they spend their money. Spending money this way is convenient, but it can also lead to zero saving habits, overdraft fees if you are not careful, and even racking up credit card debt. Seeing the excess money in bil l form creates a better sense of worth for certain

people and piling it up in a jar or container will dish out a happy reaction once it starts to expand.

Rack up those rewards! Many consumers do not util ize rewards points given to them through credit cards to their full potential. Whether the incentive is cash rewards or points that can be used on a provider?s website, the benefits can accumulate quickly if used the right way. For those who have are consistent with paying their credit card off every month, start putting most, if not all, purchases on the card every month. At the end of the payment cycle, pay the card off and the rewards will soon follow. The points can usually go towards a vacation, gif ts for yourself or others, and even cash back to tuck away in a savings account. A good amount of cards even let the cash accumulate for a long period of t ime and do not require the money to be taken out. That creates a savings account without the readily available funds. Plus, if you use the points for a vacation, the points usually go farther than if they were used for statement credit or cash value. You save and can pay for a vacation without doing anything outside the norm. That reduces stress without stressing over reducing stress! And, honestly, who couldn?t use a vacation?

All three of these methods have similar benefits to your mental well-being. They can relieve stress, create peace of mind and even put a smile on your face. Believing that these methods are possible is the f irst step to making success a reality in your mind. Take a look at whether saving or investing is the correct choice, as well. If you need a positive change or a way to pep your self-esteem, look to these ideas and let them help you brighten your mood.
