School District and School Boardsummer highlights
This summer, our learningcommunity was energizedwith opportunities for chil-dren of all ages and abilitiesas the District welcomed over3,315 students enrolled insummer school classes. How-ever, students were not theonly ones engaged in learningthis summer. Below are a fewhighlights of District educatorand School Board activitiesduring the last three months.
• Strategic Direction:Teams of teachers andprincipals developinghigh leverage action stepsto advance the District’snew strategic initiative,Lead Your Learning;
• Professional Develop-ment: Instructional staffmembers are expandingtheir horizons throughcoursework and trainingin Frameworks for Liter-acy, Project-Based Learn-ing, reading interventionand enrichment, personal-ized learning, compe-tency-based learning,action based research, in-tervention and assessmentfor math, and more, in thequest to become even bet-ter in helping students tobe college, career, and cit-izenship ready;
• Innovation: More than 25educators and administra-
tors travelled to EdenPrairie, MN, to engage inlearning about 21st Cen-tury Skills and Project-Based Learning (PBL).This brings the number ofeducators with Buck Insti-tute for Education's PBLtraining to nearly 40;
• Continuous Improve-ment: Routine mainte-nance, repair,landscaping, and cleaningof the community’s eightschool facilities, totalingmore than 1 millionsquare feet, keeps ourbuildings operating effi-ciently and effectivelythroughout the school
year;• Stewardship: The “offi-
cial” school year endedJune 30 and the BusinessServices Office was busyfinalizing the budgetprocess that began over ayear ago. In addition, theBoard of Education’sBudget Hearing and An-nual Meeting is scheduledfor September 25; resi-dents in attendance willbe asked to authorize thepreliminary budget andtax levy needed to operateand maintain the schoolsystem in 2017-18;
• Compassion: TheHoward-Suamico Educa-
tion Foundation partneredwith Green Bay Commu-nity Church, businesses,employees, and othercivic organizations in pro-viding 330 economicallydisadvantaged studentswith backpacks and es-sential school supplies;
• Leadership: Board of Ed-ucation members attendedthe Wisconsin Associationof School Board (WASB)2017 Summer LeadershipInstitute in July; theBoard of Education metseveral times to discussreferendum planning, aswell as its own goals forthe coming school year.

It may only be Septemberwith all the excitement ofback to school, but in threeshort months it will be cold.So the Howard-SuamicoOptimists need you to start
thinking about rallying yourgroup to fire up the floatbuilders, tune up the instru-ments and get into the spiritof the holidays.
It is never too early to start
planning for this year’s pa-rade. It will be held on Sat-urday, December 2nd at1:00 p.m. The theme for theparade this year is WinterWonderland. So put your
thinking caps on or Santahat and build your floataround the theme and musicis always a plus.

This parade is one of the
oldest Christmas parades inWisconsin and was grantedthe title of Wisconsin’s Of-ficial Christmas Parade bythe Governor back in the1970’s.
Howard-Suamico OptimistClub’s booyah sale
The Howard-Suamico Opti-mist Club will be hosting abooyah sale on Sunday, Sep-tember 17th from 9:00 a.m.until it is sold out.
The booyah sale will beheld at Kimps Ace Hardwarelocated at 2548 Glendale Av-enue in Howard.

Unless you live near anamusement park that does alot of advertising, you proba-bly didn’t know that August16th was National RollerCoaster Day. Actual rollercoasters provide people withthrills. But as an investor,how can you stay calm on the“roller coaster” of the finan-cial markets? Here are somesuggestions:
• Know what’s in front ofyou. If you’ve ever riddena roller coaster in thedark, you may find itscarier than if youboarded it in daylight–after all, it can be unset-tling not to know whereyou’re going. The samecan be said about invest-ing: If you have no ideawhat’s in front of you,you might find the jour-ney unnerving–and if thathappens, you could makepanicky decisions, whichare usually bad ones. Soprepare for the inevitablemarket volatility–it’s anormal part of the invest-ment landscape.
• Buckle up. When you’reon a roller coaster, youneed to buckle your seatbelt or use a restraint. Youwant to have the excite-ment of the ride, but youcertainly don’t want to
take unnecessary risks.And you can enjoy someof the excitement of in-vesting without incurringmore risk than you arecomfortable with, too.One way to lower yourrisk level is to diversifyacross a range of invest-ments–stocks, bonds,government securities,and so on. That way, if amarket downturn prima-rily affects just one typeof investment, you’ll havesome protection. How-ever, although diversifica-tion can reduce the impactof volatility on your port-folio, it can’t protectagainst all losses or guar-antee a profit.
• Choose a strategy for thejourney. Different peoplehave different ways ofhandling a roller coasterride. Some like to throwtheir hands up, enjoyingthe feeling of abandon,while others hold ontightly to the bar in frontof them. When you in-vest, you also need a strat-egy that works for you,and the best one may bethe simplest: Buy qualityinvestments and holdthem for the long term.How long is “long term”?It could be 10, 20, 30years or more. Famed in-vestor Warren Buffet sayshis favorite holding pe-
riod is “forever.” Ifyou’ve chosen a mix ofquality investments ap-propriate for your risk tol-erance, you may be ableto hold them until eitheryour goals change or theinvestments themselvesundergo some transfor-mation.
• Stay for the whole“ride.” When you hop ona roller coaster, you’vegot no choice–you’restaying until the ride isover. As an investor,though, you can exit theinvestment world when-ever you like. But if youtake a “time out” from in-vesting every time themarket drops, you riskstill being out of the mar-ket when it rallies–and theearly stages of a rally areoften when the biggestgains occur. Furthermore,if you keep investing dur-ing a “down” market,you’ll be buying shareswhen their price hasdropped, which meansyour dollars can go fur-ther–and you’ll be follow-ing one of the basic rulesof investing: “Buy low.”
You can’t take out all thetwists and turns of the invest-ment road, but by followingthe above suggestions, youcan help make the ride lessstressful–and possibly morerewarding.

For starters, identify yourshort- and long-term goals.Your shorter-term goals will
change throughout your life.When you are starting out inyour career, for example, youmight aspire to purchase ahome in the next three to fiveyears. Later on, though, yourbiggest short-term objectivemight be to save enoughmoney for a long tour of Eu-rope–without racking upcredit card debt.
As for long-term goals,your biggest one likely willbe to enjoy a comfortable re-tirement. But you may wellhave other long-term plans,too, such as sending your kidsto college in 10 or 15 years.
After you have a clear senseof your short- and long-termgoals, you can choose theright investments to help youmeet them. Let’s start withthe shorter-term ones. Whenyou’re saving for a down pay-ment on a home or for an ex-pensive European vacation,you want to make sure that acertain amount of money willbe available to you at a cer-tain time. The Howard SuamicoBoard of Education wouldlike to thank the 1,465+record number residents whorecently completed a surveyand shared their feedback re-garding the April 2017 oper-ational referendum. The goalof the survey was to help theBoard better understand thecommunity sentiment regard-ing district opportunities andchallenges. The responsesspanned across multiple spec-trums, including, various agegroups, parents and non-par-ents, as well as those whohave resided in our district foryears. The mission of ourdistrict is to work togetherwith families and communityto ensure that our studentshave the knowledge and skillsto succeed in a changing
world. By sharing your con-cerns and ideas, the Boardcan better execute this mis-sion.
The initial results of the sur-vey indicate the community’sconcerns with regard to clar-ity of the referendum and pastspending. In turn, the Boardis working hard to ensure wedeliver a clearer messagearound district needs and fi-nancial constraints. TheHoward-Suamico SchoolDistrict has less money tospend on a per pupil basisthan 90 percent of the 422school systems in Wisconsin.Since 1993 when revenuelimits were imposed onschool districts, we have hadto operate leaner than ourcomparable districts to stayfinancially solvent. We need
to continue to share this mes-sage with our community.
The survey responses com-municate the hesitation forongoing authorization to ex-ceed the revenue limits. TheBoard is working closely withour legislators and others toanalyze all options available.Though we cannot predict fu-ture state spending budgets,we are dedicated to improv-ing long term state educationspending.
We will continue to seekinput as we strive to arrive ata referendum solution that thecommunity can confidentlysupport.

There is something about fall that makes people feel more balanced.It may have to do with the fact that our schedules seem to go back tonormal. School picks back up again, but more importantly, Packergames begin—that is just what we do in Green Bay, Wisconsin. Asmuch as we hate to see summer go, it’s nice to start getting back tothings around the house and prepare for the season.
At the Paint Studio we are always looking for the next interestingdesign ideas. Those ideas usually come through what color is up and coming for the newseason. With the season changing, fall is a great time to look for inspiration from theflowers and plants to the changing leaves. That certainly doesn’t mean that because it isfall you need to paint a room pumpkin orange, however, you may want to bring in someaccent pieces that reflect those warm tones of fall. Nature gives us a vast array of colorsto choose from this time of year.
Although the colors of fall are beautiful, some of the most popular colors this year havebeen cool, earthy tones that are commonly found in nature. A common idea is to use woodgrain colors of gray and brown and mix it with shimmering aqua to remind you of the beachand water. Some of the most popular colors we are mixing are from Benjamin Moore.Popular colors are Revere Pewter (HC-172), Shale (861), or Wish (AF-680). These colorsare often coupled with Beach Glass (1564), Soft Chinchilla (2135-50), or Iceberg (2122-50). The pairing of soft grays and blues creates a calming, spa-like environment. BenjaminMoore’s color of the year is Shadow (2114-30) which is a gray with a hint of amethyst. Graydoes not always mean drab, in fact, gray can look very sophisticated and dramatic.
Choosing colors for your home is not always about what is trendy. Here, at the PaintStudio, all of us like to know what the new trends are, but more importantly, our focus ishelping you choose the right colors for your design style. If you have a style in mind butyou are not quite sure how to achieve it, we are here to help, whether you like colors of fall,nature, or prefer something completely different.
