Hello key clubbers, my name Alonso Lopez and I am Valley High
School`s new Key Club President.
I am looking forward to working with all of the members to make
this upcoming year a memorable one for everyone. I will work
hard to help bring more service opportunities, more fundraisers
and socials, and to help prepare for RTC so that we will have a
definite chance of winning. My board members and I will strive to
do the best job possible to make our club even better. I know this
year will be a great one, and I am happy to be here.
Alonso Lopez
At the end of the month of April, Valley Key Club had the honor to host
the April DCM. Below are the pictures from the first DCM of the new Key
Club year.
What was your favorite part of the DCM at Valley?
Alonso Lopez: My favorite moment during the April
DCM was when our club was setting up for the DCM it-
self. We had to set everything up before members from
other clubs arrived, and there was only a small amount
of time to do it.
Luckily, we had a lot of members helping us during
those hectic hours. I was helping to put up posters
when I realized that the tape we were using was put on
the back of all the posters, except for two.
My friend and I went back to the posters to re-tape all
over again. It was funny seeing all the mistakes that we
made. After the posters, we had to direct people to the
old theater, where the DCM was being held. Some
members came to me and asked for more tape because
the tape on the directional posters weren’t properly
sticking to the walls.
So, I decided to go to our club advisor’s room and get
some, but while on the way, I caught a student twerk-
ing right outside of a classroom, for his friend. Our eyes
suddenly locked on to each other, and an awkward and
embarrassing silence came down while I walked right
past him. When I reached the room, I laughed so hard
that my stomach hurt. I can honestly say that this was
a great DCM.
Karl Catarata: My favorite part of the April DCM
was when I joined my key club members in hectically
running around the whole entire school campus. We
were hectically running everywhere because we had di-
rect orders to get specific items from places around the
whole entire school. In the frantic running and quickly
communicating with specific officers on my board, I re-
alized how great my job was.
I also realized how much I loved doing my job in mak-
ing sure communications were still being active, and
tasks were getting done. Joining my fellow members in
completing specific tasks before the DCM was a great
experience to look back at.
What’s your Key Club color and why?
Key Club International has three main colors: blue, white and gold. As Key Clubbers, we
should understand these colors in what they symbolize, and how they relate to us as key
club members. Blue symbolizes unwavering character, white symbolizes purity, and gold
symbolizes service. What’s your key club color, and why?
My color would be white. This is because I am very well
spoken and true to myself.
The color that best represents me is blue. Blue represents me
the best because of its Key Club meaning, unwavering char-
acter. I affiliate myself to this color because I myself feel that I
am very stolid with my opinions and it is very hard to change
that without a logical argument. Also when I feel passionate
about something, I will do what I have to do to accomplish it.
Blue equals character. I joined key club so that I could make
new friends and help out my community. While being in Key
Club, I became more comfortable meeting and talking with
new people, speaking in front of people, and going out of
my comfort zone. I became more confident in myself. Key
Club has helped me to be caring, respectful, confident,
more responsible, and happier. I am happy when I am with
my fellow Key Club members. I hope to have many more
years of Key Club. Key Club builds character!

our key club. Training and a service event followed at this
conference. These are the pictures from the conference.

KARL CATARATA
When I first got to the Kiwanis Chili Event at Sunset Park, I had no idea what type of fun and adventure I
was about to embark on. Walking up to the park, I saw none of my fellow club members at all. All I saw
were other bored key club members from other schools, sitting in the shade while the Las Vegas Kiwanis
advisors were getting their chili booths ready. Looking around to make sure I hadn’t overlooked at trying
to find my fellow club members, I walked around awkwardly into the event with my outlying bright red
key club shirt.
In the far distance, I saw my fellow President Alonso Lopez, and a fellow key club member, Serena Sal-
gado. We all were excited to see each other, and apparently, they became lost because of the fact
that they parked all the way across the other side of Sunset Park. Now with my attending members in my
club, we walked around and greeted other key clubbers who looked a bit bored and lonely. We then
walked around to buy wristbands and pins from Key Clubs, we then were able to taste the chili and we
also were able to vote on who wore the best costumes. Some costumes that were there were people
dressed in banana outfits and people who wore large sombreros.
A few minutes later, we were able to meet up with our past president, Jennifer Nguyen, who is now the
CNH District Communications and Marketing Officer. We had a few minutes to talk to her and we also
were able to meet and greet the LTG’s that were present at the event. Our club was able to meet Divi-
sion 28 North’s LTG, Christopher Bui, and our own LTG, RJ Immerman. After continuing to conversate with
other fellow Key Club members, we were able to play a few activities and games with other members.
We also were able to learn more about our local Kiwanis and their operations.
I can completely say, that this was one of the most socially fun event there was in the month of May. I
hope to see more events like these in the years to come. I had lots of fun and I hope to attend the sec-
ond annual Kiwanis Chili Cook-off.
The following are pictures from the Kiwanis Chili Cook-Off event. You can find more
pictures, and even videos from the event, at vhskeyclub.tk !
Valley Key Club’s fundraisers and events during The Eliminate Project Week.
Spreading Awareness about The Eliminate Project
Division Events to Fundraise for the Eliminate Project
On Monday, the first day of The Eliminate Project Week, all of
our Key Club members took to the social media platforms to
spread awareness about the project. Members tweeted on
twitter, and posted pictures on Instagram with the hashtag
#Elimin8 in their captions.
Some members even went online to research more about the
project, and how they could help out during this week.
Our Key Club helped fundraise for the project by donating in
two ways.
On Wednesday, during our general meeting, key clubbers
donated all of their Happy/Sad Change to The Eliminate Pro-
ject.
On Saturday, at Sunset Park, our key clubbers attended the
Kiwanis Chili Cook-Off. They bought wristbands and buttons
from other key clubs to help fundraise the Eliminate Project.
Relay for Life was amazing. As soon as I got my bags checked and walked into my campsite, I knew it was going to be
pure fun. As I arrived, they were starting the Luminaria Ceremony. In which, many bags were lighted in commemora-
tion for those who lost their lives to cancer. I walked and held hands with my fellow Key Club members to commemo-
rate and remember all of those who had been effected by cancer. The ceremony, was about 2-3 laps around the
track, in pure total darkness. It gave all of us the time to reflect on those we lost, and those who survived, or are contin-
uing to fight cancer.
After the ceremony, we were dismissed to continue to walk around the campsite. I walked with a fellow Relay for Lifer,
Serena Salgado. Walking for half an hour, I walked back to my campsite and joined a fellow Rancho Key Club mem-
ber, Shay Robles in running around the whole entire field to find Serena. Since we couldn’t find her, we decided to go
look for other key club members. In the moment, we were able to walk near the stage and a performance by “The
Perks” was in progress. We stopped and sat down to watch the performance, only to find Serena at the front of audi-
ence, listening to the performance.
Relay for Life South Youth was amazing, fun, and extremely exciting. I know that near year, I will make sure to arrive ear-
lier and have more fundraisers for my team to participate in. I hope next year’s Relay for Life will be as fun as this years!
Relay for Life was an amazing experience. It brought hundreds of people together and really opened my
eyes. Anyone can be affected by cancer, and anyone, myself included can help others fight for a cure.
