EDITORIALThanks for your interest in the Valor Hispano Mag-azine. In the past, this magazine has mostly been about health and providing positivity, however we tried something different with this issue. You may recall that a couple of months ago, we released a music edition. Well we decided to try it again but this time this is a sports and fitness issue. Inside you will find articles about major sporting event in the near future, articles about fitness and health and information about local sports happening in our region.

Like the music issue, the reason behind this spe-cial edition was to give readers another side of the magazine. We wanted to give readers differ-ent material to read. We wanted to share some information that is not normally covered in our previous editions. But most of all, we wanted to provide content that we thought our readers would enjoy.

We invite you to send in your comments and sug-gestions on topics you would like us to publish in upcoming editions. We would also like to invite you to visit our website www.valorhispanoonline.com and our Facebook and Twitter accounts.

We hope you enjoy this special edition of Valor Hispano Magazine.

We send our best wishes to you and look forward to your interest in our future editions.

The biggest stars in the NBA will on be dis-play this upcoming weekend in Houston, Texas. The likes of Lebron James, Kobe Bry-ant, Kevin Durant and Chris Paul will show-case their talents in the 62nd edition of the all-star game.

The festivities kick off this year on Friday night with the BBVA Rising Stars Challenge. The game features the top rookies and sophomores in the league. This past Thurs-day night, Shaquille O’Neal and Charles Bar-kley, of Inside the NBA, chose their players for their respective teams. Fans will be given the chance to vote for the starters of each team.

On Saturday, the day kicks off with the D-League All Star, with a slam dunk competi-tion taking place at halftime.

Later in the night, NBA All-Star Saturday Night takes center stage at the Toyota Cen-ter. The night consists of four events. This year’s event comes with a twist. In past years, participants would compete against

each other for the right to be crowned best in their respective competition. However this year, the night’s events pits the two conference against each other. The west and east will each be representing a charity with the winning conference’s charity receiv-ing $350,000 and the losing conference’s charity receiving $150,000. The captain for the western conference is Chris Paul of the Los Angeles Clippers and the captain for the east is Dwyane Wade of the Miami Heat.

The first event of the night is the Sears Shooting Stars, followed by the Taco Bell Skills Challenge, then the Foot Locker Three-Point Contest and the evening wraps up with the Sprite Slam Dunk Competition.

On Sunday the 62nd All Star tips off at 8pm ET, with pregame coverage beginning at 7pm ET.

With the exception of the D-League All Star game, which will be aired live on NBA TV, all of the festivities will be shown live on TNT.Check local listings.

It’s hard to imagine that spring is right around the corner. And as spring approach-es us, we will ditch the days of staying in-doors by the fireplace and spend more time outdoors.

But the question is what to do when we shed the blankets and are ready to put on our tennis shoes? Fear not, the parks and recreation department here in El Paso can offer some helpful suggestions.

If you have children who are involved in sports or you are interested in signing them up for a sports league, you are in luck. Cur-rently the parks and recreation department is offering sign ups for spring football (which starts in April), a girls fast pitch tournament (beginning of May) and a baseball tourna-ment during the Memorial Day weekend. In addition, there are mini sports programs of-fered for children of the ages of 4-5 and 6-7 at the various recreations centers located here in town.

In addition, all of the recreation centers in town offer several services for us to stay active. One of the service offered are open gyms. So if you feel like shooting some hoops or want to run a couple of pick up games with your friends, you are luck. And in case you are into lifting or just want to get those muscles toned, each of the cen-ters has a fitness room those toning needs.

And who said that being active is for those you are young. There are nine senior cen-ters throughout the city that offered a vari-ety of activities for those who are still young at heart.

And of course the swimming pools are a popular choice for the entire family. And idon’t worry if you don’t know how to swim, the aquatic centers offer classes for all ages.

For details on hours and locations of the rec-reation centers here in town, visit the parks and recreation website.

The Game? The Referees? The Blackout?

What’s the Lasting Imagine of The Big Game?

Page 11: Valor Hispano Sports-Fitness Issue

11

The Super Bowl is one of the most watched events of the year. Most sports fans watch the game to cheer on their favorite team, root against a team they cannot stand or just watch because they are a sports fan.

Others may watch the game for the com-mercials or the halftime show. No matter why you may watch the game for, it will al-ways been remembered for something. But this year’s game was different.

Jacoby Jones, wide receiver and kick re-turner for the Ravens, returned the second half kickoff for a touchdown. Originally it was a NFL record 109 yard return, but later changed to 108, thus only tying the record. The 49ers took the field after the kickoff. About a couple of minutes into the half, half of the lights in the Superdome went out. The announcers mics went dead and left all who were watching left in the dark, no pun intended.

The lights were finally restored after a 34 minute break. Play resumed and a game that looked like on the verge of a blowout, suddenly turned into nail bitter for fans of both teams.

But that was only one of the developing plots of the game.

In every championship game, the last thing that anyone wants to talk about is officiat-ing of the game. Unfortunately, that is what some where talking about on sport talk radio the following day.

The main topic of discussion was whether 49ers wide receiver Michael Crabtree was held by cornerback Jimmy Smith of the Ra-vens on the 4th and goal play late in the game. Now the call is very debateable. Was Crabtree held? Should the referee thrown a flag on the play that late in the game? Was Smith just working within the five yards of contact defensive backs get? The bottom line is that the play happened and today we call the Baltimore Ravens Super Bowl champs. But there was a crucial no-call that

happened earlier in the game.

During the second quarter of the game, a skirmish broke out between the two teams. Words and pushes were exchanged, how-ever no punches were thrown. Unnecessary roughness penatlies were given to players of both teams. But there should have been an ejection issued to Ravens cornerback Cary Williams.

During the melee, Williams not only put his hands on an official but shoved him as well. The rules state that if you put you hands on an official it is an automatic ejection, no matter the reason why he did it (just ask Brandon Stokley about that). And with the way Williams shoved him, he should have been gone. Now he could have used the ex-cuse that he didn’t know who was trying to separate him from who he was talking to but that is besides the point. The rules are no different, no matter the magnitude of the game.

The Super Bowl is game between the two best teams letting it all hang out for a cham-pionship. Instead, here we are talking about two things that did not normally happen during a game but did certainly play a role in it.

But now the question is, what to do to en-sure that these problems do not occur in fu-ture super bowls?

Next year’s game will be in New York City metrro area, the first ever game to be played in winter elements. And if you remember there have been power outage problems at MetLife Stadium. During it’s first year, some of the lights in the stadium went out dur-ing the game. And with the cold weather, could there be a possibly of another power outage?

Also with all the talk of the officiating, could this possibly change the procedure of who is selected for the big game? Let’s just cross our fingers and hope that nothing goes wrong during Super Bowl XLVIII.

Page 12: Valor Hispano Sports-Fitness Issue

12

The Super Bowl has come and gone. Most of us saw the Baltimore Ravens defeat the San Francisco 49ers 34-31 a couple of Sundays ago. But for some their Super Bowl is just a week away.

On February 24th, 43 drivers will get the call from the grand marshal to start their en-gines for the 55th running of the Daytona 500. And most fans hope that rain does not delay the race until the next day or have a freak accident happen that forces safety workers to pour Tide detergent onto the track to clean up a gasoline spill.

But the Super Bowl of stock car racing isn’t the only thing that racing fans will worry about this upcoming week.

In addition to the Daytona 500, several oth-er races will be taking places leading up to Sunday’s race.

The racing begins this Saturday, Febraury 16, with the Sprint Unlimited at Daytona.

This race was formerly known as the Bud-weiser Shootout is an exhibition race, which has no bearing on the racing season, that is special invitation.

To be eligible for the race, drivers had to have won a pole from last year’s season or been a past winners of the shootout who attempted to compete in a race last season.

The following day, qualifying for the big races begins. But this qualifying procedure is little different that other races. All driv-ers are competing for the front row, position one and two. If drivers don’t have the top two times of the session, their starting po-sitions will be determined by the qualifying races that are held four days later.

On Thursday afternoon, the Budweiser Du-els races take center stage. These are the races that determine the remaining 41 spots for the Daytona 500. And for some drivers, this might be the closest that they get to running in the Great American Race.

Start Your Engines...

Page 13: Valor Hispano Sports-Fitness Issue

13

The Daytona 500 always attracts the most drivers because of it’s prestige and the amount of money that is awarded to it’s drivers. And because of this many small car teams are sent home because everyone in the industry wants to say that they ran in the 500.

Later in the night, the Camping World Truck Series hold their qualifying session for their race that drops the green flag the following night.

Friday before the 500, the Nationwide Series finally turns on it’s engines and begins their qualifying session for their race on Saturday afternoon. The evening is capped off with the first point race of the year, the NextEra En-ergy Resources 250 (truck race).

The NextEra En-ergy Rescources 250 is a 100 lap race that has been featured under the lights at Daytona since 2004. The race has been run since 2000. John King is the winner of last year’s event.

The speedweek is capped off with the DRIVE4COPD 300 on Saturday afternoon and of course with the 55th running of the Great American Race on Suday afternoon.

The DRIVE4COPD 300 is a 120 lap race that has been in existence since 1959. This race will typically feature a host of big names that fans are used to seeing on Sunday after-noons. James Buescher won last year’s race.

The Daytona 500 has been the cornerstone of stock car since 1959. The race originated from the first race that took place on the beaches of Daytona. The race has evolved to the spectacle that it is today. Matt Kens-eth will be looking to win back to back 500’s,

The Daytona 500, the qualifying for the race and the Sprint Unlimited at Daytona will all be televised on FOX. The DRIVE4COPD 300 will be televised on ESPN. All other races, qualifying and practice sessions will be shown on SPEED.

For more information about any of the rac-es, visit NASCAR.com.
