Issue 132 Volume 20 Serving Delta County Since 1880 50 cents Election Coverage inside on Page 3 Review Cooper By Cindy Roller Editor The City of Cooper has released an official calcula- tion for the City of Cooper Council which are as fol- lows: Willie “Bear” Wilkins receiving 65, David Phillips with 44, Jay Jackson had 23, Jo Ann Preas with 58 and Leon Hanson with 41. The incumbents Wilkins, Preas and Phillips will retain their seats on the Council. On Saturday night, an unof- ficial tabulation results were released: Wilkins had 54, Preas with 49, and Phillips received 41 to earn re-elec- tion. Challengers Jackson had 18 and Hanson with 30. The City of Cooper met on Monday, May 14 for a regu- lar meeting at 6 p.m. in the Council chambers, located on the North Side of the Square in Cooper. Reagan of Lake Creek, is the next Hero to be honored in this series. Capt. Reagan died in a plane crash at the young age of 25. He was born and raised in Lake Creek and was a graduate of Cooper High School and Paris Junior College, where he was an outstanding athlete, public speaker and journalist. In his service including overseas, Capt. Reagan received the Purple Heart and Oak Leaf cluster. Portraits of Valor Other honors bestowed on him by the Air Corps of the U.S. Army included the Distinguished Flying Cross to which he earned for feats of heroism in the cold, fog-shrouded Aleutians. As a Lieutenant, Reagan piloted a B-26 that helped to sink a Japanese cargo ship and two destroyers. According to previous reports, the Delta Countian re- ceived his primary training at Santa Maria, California; his basic training at Moffett Field; and was commissioned Aug. 15, 1941, at Stockton Field, California. He was assigned to Alaskan duty Dec. 23, 1941. Following Capt. Reagan’s passing, First Lt. Arthur Batten wrote these words of tribute to his family on his friend… “He and I had breakfast together on the day he died. So, you will understand, Mr. Reagan, that I am sincere when I say that I share your loss with you. …He was a man and he died as a man and a hero, while doing that which he loved more than life itself – flying. He was devoted to flying and its future and had done much to teach the principles of safety to his fellow pilots. …Remember him as a fine, brave comrade who will live forever among the gallant company of men who have lived and died for their country.” Capt. Reagan is honored with a memorial at the Red River Valley Veterans Memorial in Paris by his brother, Bro. Gary Reagan of Charleston. The Candidates’ Forum 2012 was sponsored by the Delta County Republi- can Club. Delta County Republican Club President Delbert Hor- ton opened the meeting fol- lowed by a prayer by mem- ber Joseph Weilen Beck, the Pledge of Allegiance and the Pledge to the Texas Flag was led by Phyllis London and a wonderful rendition of the National Anthem sung by Amy Asbill Patrick and she led the singing of God Bless America. “It was a huge success,” said Club President Horton. Twenty candidates including local, district, state and feder- al representatives gave over- views of their hopes and plans for the future. “An informed voter is the wisest voter, and the 100 plus attendees at the Forum are now better equipped to make an informed vote,” said Hor- ton. A stage full of candidates faced off for a spot on the Republican Party ballot with a question and answer ses- sion after each candidate had a chance to present their accomplishments and strate- gies for Delta County. Wonderful homemade snacks and drinks were served af- ter, as voters had a chance to speak personally to each of the speakers. Early voting has already started and the Primary Elec- tion Day is Tuesday, May 29, 2012. “Don’t forget what a privilege and responsibility we have as citizens of this great nation,” said Horton. “Let your voices be heard. On the day of the Candidate’s Forum, a disparity was found on some of the paperwork regarding Elliot’s application. “I was not deciding at this late of a date,” said Pam Derr, Delta County Republican Chairperson, “I believe voters need to have a fair election.” According to information received by the Cooper Re- view, depending on the out- come of the election, her op- ponent Dawn Stewart, as the incumbent, will have the op- portunity to contest the results to a District Judge. Photo courtesy of John's Creek Lodge FROM THE COMMANDER’S DESK RE: MEMORIAL DAY FLAGS, OAKLAWN CEMETERY The American Legion Post 483, Cooper, Texas, will be coordinating the placement of approximately 500 American flags at the grave sites of vet- erans who gave service to this country. The ceremony will begin at 9 a.m., Saturday, May 26, at the East-entrance flag- pole of Oaklawn Cemetery, Cooper. Post members, families, or- ganizations, and citizens who would like to take part in the placing of these flags, honor- ing our veterans, are encour- aged to participate. There will be a brief welcome, and Post Judge Advocate E.J. Cates, project organizer, will give instructions. The project will cover 15 sections of the cem- etery, and each section should take approximately 30 min- utes. Flags will be removed Tues- day, May 29, 9 a.m. If you are interested in helping please meet the Post members at the East-entrance flagpole.
