Tangoisoneoftheworld'smostbeautifuldances.It'schargedwithenergy,eleganceandpoise.Themusicthataccompaniesitispoetic,eccentricandnostalgic.TheTangohasbecomeaculturalemblemforArgentinaandUruguayandisdancedaroundtheworld.In2009,theUNESCOdeclaredtheTangotobepartoftheworld's'culturalheritage'andgranteditprotection.
Tango'soriginsarenotglitzy.MostreckonthatTangowasbornintheslumsofBuenosAiresattheturnofthe20thcentury.Atthetime,Argentinawasbooming;BuenosAireswasafinancialcentreandatradinghub.Outsidethecity,thefrontieragriculturallandsofthePampaswerebeingrapidlydevelopeddrawinginmigrantsfromallovertheworld.Butthecountry'swealthdistributionwasalsostaggeringlyunequal,andmigrantsandlocalsalikeoftenendedupinthesprawlingslumswhichenvelopedaroundthePortofBuenosAiresontheRiverPlata.
Mostresidentsoftheslumswereemployedinthemeatpackingindustry.NewrailroadsbroughtcattlefromthePampastotheportareawhereitwasslaughtered,packedandshippedaroundtheworld.MuchofthisindustrywasrunbyBritishfirmsandfinancialinterests.IfyoustrollthroughBuenosAires,onewillstillbeunexpectedlystruckbypeculiarremnantsofBritishinfluenceneartheport;Avillageclockhere,atrainstationthere.
TheslumsofBuenosAiresbecameameltingpotofpeoplesandcultures.MostmigrantscamefromItaly,SpainandGermany.Theybroughtwiththemthingslikeviolins,cellos,pianos,and,oneimagines,adeepsenseofnostalgiafortheirprevioushomelands.ThesemigrantsmixedwithArgentineblacksandGauchos(ArgentineCowboys)whobroughtamixofAfricanrhythms,adancecalledthecandombeandjauntymusicknownas'themilonga'tothetable.Atsomepoint,someonethrewaBandoneonintothemixforgoodmeasure.Fromthechaos,Tangowasborn.
Forawhile,TangoonlyexistedintheslumsofBuenosAires.It'swidelyassertedthatmostofthedance'searlydevelopmenttookplaceinbarsandbrothels.ThedancewaslargelyignoredbyrichArgentinesuntilthe1920'swhen,quiteunexpectedly,TheTangomadeitbacktoEuropewhereitbecamearaginghit.Intheend,itwasParis,notBuenosAires,thatpopularisedtheTango.
Sincethen,thefortunesofTangohavewaxedandwaned.UnderthegovernmentofJuanPeroninthe1930s,TangobecamewidelyfashionableandamajorpartofArgentina'snationalidentity.Inthe1950s,astringofmilitarydictatorswithastrongdistasteforpublicgatheringspulledTango'snumbersdown.TheadventofRockandRollalmostkilledthedancealtogether.
Morerecently,however,Tangohasenjoyedaculturalresurgence.LondonhasbecomesomethingofaTangocapital-YourwriterregularlyhearsofthedebaucheryofallnightTangopartieswhichtakeplaceinthebarsofSoho-
