Van Belleghem French Immersion Pre-School Co-op Inc. Welcome to Van Belleghem French Immersion Pre-School Co-op Inc. This is a parent-run, non-profit cooperative whose main goal is to provide a quality pre-school program for children anticipating entrance into French Immersion School.

Our Programs When children first come to us in September, school is all new to them. For some, it can be a traumatic experience - one filled with conflicting emotion. They are excited over this new step in life and sad because of the separation. They are actually starting to cut away at the apron strings in order to embark on their own road into the future. This separation gives them a chance to grow, to learn how to live with others and to make use of their time in a different way. Life in the classroom will be enriched but it won’t be without its little disappointments. If necessary, a favourite blanket or stuffed toy might ease the first few days in nursery school. The objectives of our program are:

To provide an introduction to the organized classroom setting, while stressing enjoyment and socialization, minimum formal academic situations in favour of incidental teaching where opportunities occur.

To promote healthy social interaction with the peer group through the use of games and group play.

To be inclusive of children with additional support needs and to take into account the developmental capabilities of children.

To promote the healthy development of fine motor skills with the use of arts, crafts, etc.

To promote the development of gross motor skills and a positive attitude towards physical fitness with a regular program of physical activity, both outdoors and in the school gym. (Weather and scheduling permitting.)

To encourage the appreciation and enjoyment of music by its incorporation into other aspects of the day’s activities.

To introduce some basic aspects of the French language as related to all other activities performed.

We try to give children the opportunity to develop in various ways:

As an immersion class, they will be learning a second language. This is introduced slowly so as not to frustrate the children. We want them to love the language. They will learn many words, numbers, colours, etc, in French, but they will never by quizzed or punished because they do not know or understand a word.

Field trips are planned from time to time throughout the year for which drivers and supervisors will be needed. All parents are expected to participate equally for these events. Consent forms will be sent home with the children for signature. No siblings are allowed as we rely on the parent volunteers to assist in the supervision. We try to have one adult for every two children.

Art time is to develop small motor skills, cutting, colouring, gluing, etc. Some children, at the beginning of nursery school, lack self-confidence, but a little help and a lot of praise can work wonders!

Exercise improves coordination, balance, etc. Games stimulate the child’s imagination and intelligence. When weather permits, the children spend some play time outdoors.

Snack times gives the children time to “chit-chat” together and socialize. Some suggestions for good nutritional snacks are raw fruit and vegetables, yogurt, applesauce, dried fruit such as raisins or apricots, bagel, dry cereal, cheese, hard-boiled egg, a small sandwich, or crackers. Please do not send chocolate in any form, candy, potato chips, or items that they may choke on such as popcorn. Brita water is supplied so please send a plastic cup (no lid). Van Belleghem is a Nut Safe School so NO PEANUTS/ NUTS are allowed. The pre-school has an anaphylaxis policy in place which may be viewed upon request.

Story time is quiet time, at the end of the day.

Volunteer procedures A parent may be required to volunteer as a helper for at least five classes. Child and Family Services require a child abuse registry form to be filled out by volunteers when the volunteer is included in the child/adult ratio.

As a volunteer, your task will involve helping individual or small groups of children during activity time. Children are free to choose an activity and are expected to participate constructively, alone or with friends. Because of the large variety of materials and options open to the children, your help will assist us to provide guidance, stimulation, and conversation with the children. You may be given a specific task when you arrive, however you are free to move about the room if you feel more comfortable or if your child wishes you to. Some projects are messy and we suggest that you wear suitable, washable clothing.

Discipline concerns are usually best handled by the staff; however, we ask you to step in if a child’s safety is threatened.

Sometimes, when a parent comes into a classroom to help, the child feels uncertain about sharing this parent with other children. If this happens, please do not be concerned, as this is a normal reaction. Your relationship with your child is important, and we want your visit to be a happy one for both you and your child. Give your child plenty of attention, let him/her sit beside you and be first, let him/her help you, he/she knows the routine. Please don’t criticize your child in the classroom, or criticize your child or his/her behavior when you arrive home.

Make sure you comment positively. Mention how well he/she managed at school, played with other children, enjoyed doing puzzles, etc. Find something that your child did well that day and tell the family. Show him/her how proud you are of him/her and that you enjoyed sharing his/her day at school.

Parent volunteer responsibilities include helping with arts and crafts, putting names on papers, interacting, having fun, and participating. Also, you may assist the children with their snacks, getting dressed for outdoor play, cleaning up play dough, sweeping floor and wiping tables and chairs if necessary.

POLICIES OF OPERATION

Please read these policies carefully. By registering your child in this program, you are agreeing to abide by these rules.

Registration

All children must be three (for the three-year-old program) and four (for the four-year-old program) by December 31, 2015. All children must be toilet trained. When registering your child in the program, a non-refundable deposit must be paid in order to hold a space. The balance of the fees is payable in full at the September meeting or in installments from September to December. We will require a copy of your child’s birth certificate (Note: this is the only proof of age acceptable as evidence) when you submit your registration form. We will also require your MHSC number and the child’s individual medical number, as well as your physician’s name, address, and telephone number at the time of registration. A Privacy Consent form is included with your registration package. Please carefully read, fill out and sign this form. The e-mail address provided upon registration will be shared with your class rep for the sole purpose of Van Belleghem French Immersion Pre-School communication. Your child will not be able to attend Van Belleghem French Immersion Pre-school until the signed Privacy Consent form has been returned to the pre-school. Transportation

It is the responsibility of the parent or guardian to arrange for their child’s transportation to or from school. The teacher is responsible for the child during class hours only, and only after the child’s presence has been acknowledged by the teacher inside the classroom. The teacher must be told who will be picking up the child from school and the names of those responsible must be provided in writing on the back of the registration form.

Drop Off/Pick Up

It must be remembered that classes are in session when you bring your child to pre-school. We must use the (a) middle doors or (b) main entrance doors on the North side of the school. Please do not walk through the hallways of the school. Please do not drop-off your child any earlier than 10 minutes before the start of class. Bring your child into the classroom after their outdoor clothes are removed and hung up. When picking up your child, please wait in the carpeted hallway directly inside the middle doors on the north side of the school. The teacher will motion to the parents when it is time to dress your child. Please be on time. A charge will be assessed if the child is picked up 15 minutes late or later @ $8.00 per 15 minute increments. This is paid directly to the teacher. Field Trips

Parent volunteers will provide and/or arrange for their child’s transportation for field trips. While in transit, the child/adult ratio should not exceed three (3). Van Belleghem French Immersion Pre-School Co-op Inc.

Board of Directors

As determined by the Cooperative Act of Manitoba, the business of the Van Belleghem French Immersion pre-school is overseen by a board of directors. The board that helps to run the pre-school consists of parent volunteers whose contributions are invaluable to the program and without this board, the pre-school would not be able to operate.

Answers to Frequently Asked Questions:

How often and how long are meetings?

There are usually about 7 meetings a year for the board, with a couple of meetings at the beginning of the year to make sure that everything is running smoothly, and roughly every other month through the rest of the year unless something unusual arises. The meetings tend to be about 1.5 to 2 hours in duration.

What is the time commitment?

Time commitments vary by role, but do not tend to be an overwhelming requirement. Most positions would require an hour or two here and there but not often an ongoing workload throughout the year.

What other benefits are there to being in the board?

Being involved with the board is also a good way to be in touch with what is going on with your child’s pre-school and to get to know some of the other families involved, enhancing the community of the pre-school.

Please take a moment to consider the board positions, and fill out and return this form with your registration papers. Thank you for your consideration.

Please check below the statement that applies to you. If there is a specific role that interests you, feel free to indicate that in the space provided.

Curriculum Statement

Van Belleghem French Immersion Pre-School provides a gentle introduction to the

French language while encouraging enjoyment and learning through play and

socialization. Our program is structured to satisfy the four basic areas of development

common to all human beings:

1. Social Development: At the beginning of the year, children often engage in

solitary play. Their play choices combined with staff involvement, including

modeling and encouraging, help them develop friendships and social skills. Play

encourages the development of communication skills, cooperation, confidence

and negotiation & conflict resolution skills.

2. Emotional Development: Children often enter the pre-school focused on their

wants, needs and desires. Calm, loving and consistent interactions with staff

create stability which encourages the child to feel good about himself/herself and

feel a sense of belonging. For example, children are greeted with “bonjour”

everyday and welcomed individually into the classroom.

3. Cognitive Development: Children are presented with play materials and planned

experiences that support what they know and help expand their knowledge and

thinking. For example, apples may be familiar to children but are examined

artistically and scientifically during our exploration of this topic: What is an

apple? Are all apples the same? How are they different? What is inside an

apple? Do you think all apples have the same number of seeds? Each child

predicts which apple has more seeds or if they have the same number. How can

we find out how many seeds are in each apple?

4. Physical Development: Children develop fine motor skills through activities

such as art, block and construction play. They develop gross motor skills while

dancing during music and movement activities, running and kicking a ball in the

gym or climbing on the outdoor play structure.

Our room is organized into centres which are at the children’s eye level and within reach.

This allows them to access materials independently which builds self-esteem and a sense

of accomplishment. Children make choices about where, when and how they wish to

play. Staff observe play so that opportunities to extend learning is based on the

children’s interests, abilities and needs. Staff engage in children’s play and ask open-

ended questions. This allows the children to expand their reasoning/language skills and

provides staff with the opportunity to listen to and to get to know each child. Information

gathered is used to plan further play and learning opportunities. For example, one group

of children observed playing with ‘My Little Ponies’ were delighted to find out that they

STUCK to the magnetic blackboard. Staff prompted thinking and problem-solving by

asking “Why do you think this is happening? What part of the pony is sticking to the

board? Do you know what this part is called? What else in the classroom do you think

the ponies will stick to?” Then we added magnets to the play materials and the children

Page 23: Van Belleghem French Immersion Pre-School...1 of 28 Van Belleghem French Immersion Pre-School 14 - 10 Vermillion Road, Winnipeg, MB R2J 2T1 Telephone 204-255-1134 Thank you for considering

continued to discover more concepts such as magnets stick to metal surfaces but they

push other magnets away.

Staff-led experiences are sometimes chosen according to the French concepts and

vocabulary being introduced. We incorporate the French language with songs, poetry,

games, music & movement and participation in the Ecole Van Belleghem School

community. However, we also incorporate the children’s interests when planning

activities. For example, a child introduced the idea of square-carre foods during snack

which inspired everyone’s thinking. A note was sent home informing parents of this

discussion and the children were invited to bring carre foods to school. A poster of the

children’s ideas was created and displayed outlining the learning during this activity such

as expressing ideas, listening to others and working together as a group. Organization

and flexibility are important components of our daily schedule. Children feel secure

when they know what to expect therefore we keep a consistent sequence to our daily

schedule. However, the amount of time we devote to each activity will fluctuate

depending on what staff are observing of children’s needs and interests.

Young children enjoy learning a new language and even more so when it is along with

peers of varying abilities and cultures. We welcome children with additional support

needs and develop the environment and planned experiences taking into account

individual developmental capabilities. A range of abilities and cultures among our

children and families offers meaningful learning opportunities. We know that “hello”

and “bonjour” are greetings in English and French but we learned from a friend that

“hola” is how it is said in Spanish. We encourage families to enhance our knowledge by

sharing information or items from home. For example, a classmate from Asia showed us

that toys from China are quite different than the ones we play with in Canada such as

bamboo whistles. Staff also add items to the play centres to expand this learning such as

providing race and abilities awareness puzzles, books about people of different ages,

cultures, abilities and genders in the reading centre, and people figures with specialized

equipment in the block centre. From these experiences, children learn that characteristics

of people can be different but similarities also exist. Understanding and embracing these

differences and similarities allows all children to feel acceptance and a sense of

belonging.

Information about your child’s learning and development is provided through monthly

newsletters, verbal sharing at drop-off and pick-up and by written notes. We also provide

information handouts to help you understand your child’s development in general. For

example, an article about the stages of children’s art development is provided at the

beginning of the year to explain what you are looking at when viewing your child’s

creations and to offer suggestions for open-ended comments/questions about your child’s

artwork. In addition, our open door policy welcomes family members to attend the

program as their schedule allows. This way, parents can see first-hand the learning and

development.

CODE OF CONDUCT At Van Belleghem French Immersion Pre-School Inc., we strive to provide a safe,

caring, learning environment for children, staff and families. We believe in the equality of all people and respect diversity.

The following people are expected to behave in a respectful manner and comply with this code of conduct:

- management and staff members

- children

- parents/guardians of children enrolled

- all others involved with our centre

Guiding Principles for Appropriate Behaviour

Be Respectful We are respectful of ourselves and other people. We are respectful of the ideas and feelings of others. We are respectful of the environment, equipment and materials.

Be Safe We work and play safely to help keep ourselves and others from getting hurt.

Be Cooperative We solve our problems by talking and listening to each other respectfully to find a solution. When we cannot solve a problem ourselves, we ask for help.

Be Supportive of Learning We learn to the best of our abilities and support the learning of others.

Developmental Capabilities of Children

We understand that it is normal for children to display inappropriate behaviour at times for a variety of reasons. The developmental capabilities of each child will always be considered when determining both expectations for behaviour and consequences of inappropriate behaviour.

Appropriate Use of Technology

All children, parents, staff and others involved in our centre must use e-mail, electronic devices and the Internet according to our policies. This protects people’s privacy and the confidentiality of information. All people involved with the preschool adhere to appropriate conduct pertaining to the use of email, and electronic devices. This includes:

Use of cell phones during class time will be limited to emergency situations only.

Parents volunteering or observing the class will keep cell phones turned off when class is in progress.

All email correspondence pertaining to the school will be professional and respectful (ex: inquiries within the board, and with staff and parents.)

26 of 28

Unacceptable Behaviours

The following behaviours by children, staff, parents and others involved in our centre are unacceptable:

all forms of bullying (physical, verbal, emotional, social or cyber bullying), including comments, actions or visual displays that are intentional, hurtful and repetitive

harassment, including behaviour that degrades, demeans, humiliates or embarrasses someone that a reasonable person would know is unwelcome

all forms of abuse (sexual, physical or psychological), including verbally, in writing or otherwise

discrimination against any person or group because of their race (or perceived race), colour, ancestry nationality or place of origin, ethnic background or origin, religion or creed( including religious belief, religious association or religious activity) age, sex including pregnancy (possibility of pregnancy, or circumstances related to

pregnancy) , gender-determined characteristics, sexual orientation, marital and family status, source of income, political belief or association and physical or mental disability including reliance on a dog guide or other animal assistant, a

wheelchair, or any other remedial appliance or device.

actions that put another person at risk of harm, including violent physical acts (with or without a weapon) and threatening someone

Proactive Strategies

We actively strive to create an environment that supports the health, safety and well-being of children by:

having realistic and developmentally appropriate expectations for behaviour

setting up the environment and materials to encourage appropriate behaviour and reduce potential for inappropriate behaviour

planning a program based on children’s interests and developmental needs

establishing consistent yet flexible schedules and routines that help children gain trust, security and self control

We create a positive environment for children, parents, staff and others involved in our centre by:

developing positive relationships, including making time to talk and listen

establishing clear, consistent, simple limits, rules, policies and procedures

stating limits in a positive way and periodically reminding people

providing explanations for limits, rules, policies and procedures

working together to solve problems

modelling and encouraging appropriate behaviour

Page 27: Van Belleghem French Immersion Pre-School...1 of 28 Van Belleghem French Immersion Pre-School 14 - 10 Vermillion Road, Winnipeg, MB R2J 2T1 Telephone 204-255-1134 Thank you for considering

27 of 28

Consequences for Inappropriate Behaviour

We will consistently respond to inappropriate behaviour by children, parents, staff and others involved in our centre by:

reminding people of expectations and limits

using a respectful approach to explain why a behaviour is inappropriate and what behaviour is expected

talking only about the behaviour, not labelling the person

responding sympathetically and acknowledging feelings

establishing natural, logical consequences

Students When behaviour issues are identified in the classroom, first response by the teacher is to address the child directly, at eye level. Discussion of the behaviour at issue will involve the following basic sequence:

Identification of the problem behaviour

Expression of appreciation if the student identifies the inappropriate behaviour and

accepts responsibility for it

Identification of why this behaviour is unacceptable

Discussion between students will be facilitated if it is a situation involving more than one

child

Student will give an appropriate apology where required, including verification of an

agreement about the situation at hand – ex: “I will not. . . . .” or “Next time I will......”

If this sequence does not result in the desired outcome, or the child is too upset to discuss the event, the child will be given a “time-out” to think about the situation and/or to calm down. During this time the child will be checked in with every few minutes. Once the child is ready to deal with the problem, the sequence will be picked up where it was left off. For most “normal” preschool aged issues, dealing with the incident within the class is sufficient. In situations of repeated violations OR when the problem is one of intentional violence against another student, discussion with the parent will follow. A plan will be discussed and achieved with the parent. These policies take into account the developmental capabilities of 3 and 4 year old children, and age appropriate developmental behaviour and expectations. In any situation where a parent has concerns about their child’s experience, the teacher will agree to set up a time to discuss the child’s progress in the program. There is an open door policy in the class. If at any time and for any reason, a parent/guardian wishes to observe the class, they are welcome to do so.

Page 28: Van Belleghem French Immersion Pre-School...1 of 28 Van Belleghem French Immersion Pre-School 14 - 10 Vermillion Road, Winnipeg, MB R2J 2T1 Telephone 204-255-1134 Thank you for considering

28 of 28

Serious Disruption of the Class

In any situation where the child’s behaviour is disruptive to the point that the class cannot be conducted in an orderly way, or where one child’s needs exceed the resources available, consultation with the parent will be required. A plan of action will be created with the parent. This may include but is not limited to:

alteration in reward/environment at home,

negotiation, discussions between parents and child,

parent’s attendance of classes to assist with child,

parent staying on site but not in the class

suggesting resources such as behavioural therapy

If a child’s needs exceed the available resources of the nursery school, the child may be sent home with the parent if no other alternatives can be found at that time. These issues will be documented and brought to the board for consideration and problem solving. Repeated disruption of class progress of this nature may result in the board deciding that the child should be removed from the program. The board would also consider whether or not to return tuition and/or deposit in this situation. Parents/Guardians and other visitors In any situation where a parent’s conduct violates the code of conduct as described above, the teacher will discuss the issue with the parent, or have the appropriate board member discuss it with the offending parent. If this is not sufficient to solve the problem, the individual identifying the problem will document the complaint to be brought to the board for further discussion. Possible solutions will be further discussed and explored.

In extreme cases, intervention may include but is not limited to:

mediation services may be contacted

the Manitoba Human Rights Commission for information and advice may be

contacted to resolve an issue informally or to make a formal complaint if the

behaviour involves discrimination or harassment

the police to assist with threatening behaviour

a child could be removed from the program if the care provider were posing a threat to

the well being of other families or the nursery school, and alternative arrangements could

not be made.

Staff In any situation where a parent has a concern about staff conduct, the parent will ideally first discuss their concern with the staff member. If this does not result in sufficient resolution of the problem, the parent should contact the Van Belleghem Pre-School board coordinator (Chair). The parent will need to provide a written complaint, detailing the situation for the board. The board will discuss the event, and create a plan of action. A record of the incident will be kept. Repeated significant issues from multiple sources would be grounds for termination.
