President’s MessageFor a number of reasons I have decided to stay on as President for 2020 after all. I know what it’s like. I was a spectator for a number of years after I joined, gradually realizing that the club needs administrating to keep things going year after year.We will really need a few members to consider taking on the VP and president position for 2021. Many members have been heavily involved in administration or club events for a long time, and their efforts are greatly appreciated. Some of you faithfully come to meetings and events but are not that involved otherwise. Hopefully a few of you can think hard about how you can help the club with your spare time.I’ll do my part if you do yours. We promise to have an interesting list of presentations and car tours in 2020.Dana

Next meeting: Feb. 13, 7:30 pmSullivan Hall, 6306 152nd Street, Surrey

In case of inclement weather, please check your email, or phone a member of the Executive, prior to leaving home to confirm the meeting will be held.

Remember to wear your name tags, return Library items, donate items for the raffle, bring Loonies for the raffle, bring your ideas for presentations and destinations for tours, your ads and photos for the newsletter, and a calendar to record upcoming events.

Web UsersIT DOESN`T GET BETTER THAN THIS GUYS!!27 Litre V12, NO power steering, skinny tyres, exhaust pipes that set the grass on fire!Belching flames fumes, tyre burning & the occasional spinning turbo`! What more? Health & safety? Sure, one guy was wearing a daggy hat & seat belts not invented then. It was believed that it was safer for the driver & mechanic to be ejected than not!The spectators kept a rather respectable distance up to a MASSIVE 6 feet!

You will enjoy this. Sound on HIGH! Pete.https://www.youtube.com/embed/AsKjPwRaA5Q

We received an email from Danica Gilding, Abbotsford Parks & Rec, thanking us “for creating memorable and impactful events for our community.” We’ve held our annual Picnic at Hougen Park for 36 years, and are booked for 2020. Our attendance is usually around 500..so that is around 18 000 people!! Nice to be recognized.

Well..we are in a pickle with THREE vacancies on our Executive…I phoned a few car people and they reported similar experiences in their area.. A teacher at the local secondary school reported that students will not sign up for clubs, sports, or activities… A sign of the times: people don’t want to commit. fewer marriages,..fewer babies,..fewer stable neighbourhoods for long periods, modern cars being owned for shorter periods, drastically reduced church attendance, retailers closing, rapidly changing politics at all levels, etc etc.

In March, our club celebrates our 37th anniversary, we’re carrying on with many long term members..we know how to help each other and have fun.

That we arrived at fifty years together is due as much to luck as to love, and a talent for knowing, when we stumble, where to fall, and how to get up again.

Bruce & Pat Brown enjoyed a wonderful Christmas with their two little grandchildren. They were unable to leave the Island during the wind storms mid-January. House renos take up all their time.

Alan Garr said, “Given the weather forecast, the Coupe won't be venturing out for some time.We did manage to get out to Harrison Hot Springs for a weekend a few weeks ago and made it back before the rain hit. She ran without a hitch. Gotta love the overdrive. By the way,  the staff at the hotel, an older fellow named Rocky,  was so taken by the Coupe, he gave us free valet parking so the car could sit right in front of the hotel entrance instead of out behind the building.Looks like the weather is getting colder for the next  little while. And Joan and I are heading to Kenya (via Paris)  at the end of next month for afew weeks on a birding trip.”

Following the announcement of the closing of 19 magazine titles, Terry Denomme, ( Canadian Hot Rods,) on Dec. 7th, PISRA’s Facebook page, made these points:-most of the public doesn’t have the inclination or attention span to read that many words.-corporate greed may have a hand, but also declining readership & declining ad revenues were prime motivators.-Television, social media, & streaming video content have reduced our attention span.-advertising revenues cover most of the cost of publication, so diminishing ads would mean the cost of a magazine could be around $20..-rack space for magazines have declined over the years; retailers don’t make much profit selling magazines.-Please purchase car magazines, it helps the publishers with their finances, and helps them stay relevant with the advertisers.People don’t seem to appreciate the comforts they have until they are gone….

Cars and Coffee??Ford is working with McDonald’s to recycle their coffee bean waste into car parts, reducing Ford’s carbon footprint. Chaff, the dried outer skin of coffee beans, is heated under pressure mixed with other materials to form pellets that can be used to form car parts. The bioplastic is 20% lighter and the process uses 25% less energy to mould. “The heat properties of the chaff are better than the components that Ford now uses. A lighter car that uses less energy to build will help Ford reach its targeted CO2 emissions reductions, as well as better its fuel-economy ratings. “By Alex Reid, Vanc. Sun Driving Section, Dec. 27.Editor’s Note: Henry Ford used soybeans to make plastic in early Fords.

London Taxes Older Vehicles to Fight Air Pollution; Associated Press“In a bid to fight air pollution, London has introduced one of the world’s toughest vehicle emissions standards, placing a tax on older, more polluting cars that drive into the city centre. The drivers of diesel cars more than 4 years old and of gas-powered engines more than 13 years old must pay a US$16.30 fee day or night when entering central London. That’s on top of London’s congestion charge, which is $15 between 7 am and 6 pm weekdays.Non-compliant trucks and buses face a $130 daily fee.London Mayor Sadiq Khan says the Ultra-Low Emission Zone is necessary since thousands die annually in London alone from Toxic air.”

Still have a few Hummingbirds around your area? This was a successful solution to preventing their food from freezing:Put an activated hand warmer in a sock, wrap sock around the feeder, secure with an elastic band. It lasts up to 12 hours, and is brought inside at night. A customer told the clerk at the hardware store, who shared the tip with me.

One day, you’ll wake up & there won’t be anymore time to do things you’ve always wanted

to do. Do it now!

12Hemmings Daily: World’s Largest collection of British cars closes after Museum Founder dies By Daniel Strohl, Aug. 23, 2019.

For more than 2 decades ago, Ian,Hope – a mechanic by trade – founded a British car museum with 36 cars, half of them were Morris Minors He gradually added more cars & trucks, maintaining a focus on Minors, with examples of just about every body style numbering 70 or so.In addition to the Minors, he also added to the collection a 1923 Dennis Fire Engine used by Hastings Fire Service at the time of the Hawkes Bay Earthquake Disaster in 1931, Jaguars, Vauxhalls, Rovers, Hillmans, Triumphs, Commers, Fords, and more. In all, he had more than 500 vehicles in the museum at the time he died in June of this year, leading him to describe the collection as the largest stockpile of vintage British motor cars in the world even though he often referred to the collection as his “backyard museum.”The museum announced this past week that it will be closed until further notice with no mention of the fate of the museum or of the collection of cars. Hope reportedly intended for the collection to remain intact after his death. The situation the British Car Museum now finds itself in is not dissimilar to that of the Den Hartogh Ford Museum in the Netherlands following the death of museum founder Piet den Hartogh. That museum went to auction in June of last year after den Hartogh’s daughter closed the museum, citing a lack of interest. For more information on Hope’s British Car Museum, visit BritishCarMuseum.co.nz.Editor’s note: Faithful readers of this newsletter will remember the photos and article about the Den Harogh Ford Museum in Holland, contributed by our Aussie non-member Colin Kilmaster. Where are you Colin??

13Member Brian Krueger answered my plea for photos: I will attach a few ’40 Ford pictures and some old gas engine pictures. If you can use any of them, you are welcome. I hope something here brightens your day.  I took about 20,000 pictures during construction.  Most of the pictures are boring detail stuff.  The alloy wheel is BBS. The supercharger is an Eaton M90./  I milled out the dash insert. It fit the OEM with no cut and is held in with the OE studs.

Brian is very creative…lots of adaptations…Unfortunately most of you, except long term members, have not met him.He came to our first meeting at Sullivan Hall but was unable to climb the stairs with his walker.Maybe a summer meeting?

15Parts Bin(a.k.a.cleaning off my desk)

Route 66The aim of many car buffs is to drive the Route, though many parts are now decayed. Much of it dates to 1926, a link to move goods. Most of the restaurants, shops, etc. have closed. “One poor fellow built his restaurant in 1924 on Route 4 in Carlinville, Ill, which became Route 66 in 1926, then moved in 1930 and was set to bypass him. He reopened in Litchfield in 1929, then in 1935 a new 4 lane 66 was set to bypass him again, so he moved across the street to be visible from both alignments. It’s like playing hopscotch with hand grenades. (The restaurant, the Ariston cafe, is still open. Sometimes you win.)By Lorraine Sommerfled, Driving Section, Van. Sun, January 3, 2020

Greener Auto SectorMore than 20 000 new hires will be needed in the next 10 years for the auto sector: management, sales, trades, and technologies. How to attract young people & provide training is a concern. BCIT has developed an EV training program. About 10 % of vehicle sales are electric. All new car sales must be zero-emission vehicles by 2040.from an article by Blair Qualey, Vanc. Sun, Driving, Jan 3, 2020

Why is Auto Maintenance So Expensive? by Brian Turner, driving.ca, Jan 16, 2020Synthetic Oil: the higher cost & frequency of use adds up, over $150.. Check your owner’s guide, perhaps you can use traditional oil and change between every 5000 & 10 000 km.

Windshield Wipers: Beam wiper blades are worth the extra money: they last longer and improve vision. Often on sale.

Low-Profile Tires: Tire companies are opting for less side wall to improve handling, though most wouldn’t feel the difference, they are less than ideal for winter driving. They can look better, but that comes at the expense of ride quality.

Look for higher profile tires & smaller sizing options when you are considering a new vehicle. Check with your tire retailer to see if it’s possible to mount a smaller tire.

Forests that cold convert cO2 into oxygen are being cut down to obtain the raw materials for car batteries.” The group wants better synthetic and bio fuelsfrom Vanc. Sun, National Post, Jan. 3, 2020

New Year’s Resolution to Keep Your Car Tidy?By Nicola Anzia, Washington PostFor many of us, our car is our second home as we spend long hours commuting or driving kids to their activities. Here’s some tips:Clear Trash Regularly: as you disembark from your car, grab the trash & dispose of it, ask your passengers to do the same. OR, each time you fi ll up with gas, get rid of the trash. Have a designated container for trash.Get Organized: keep supplies in a designated place, accessible to back seat passengers. Consider an over-the-seat organizer. A clear container, with a lid, can go back and forth to the house for supplies that need updating regularly; ie. snacks, medications, water bottles, gloves, etc.Compartmentalize the Trunk: Keep a few bins for stuff you regularly have in the trunk: first aid kit, shopping bags, blanket, etc. Clean Consistently: Wipe surfaces & vacuum regularly. Keep wipes and/or a microfibre cloth for clean ups. in the glove box. Consider a car vacuum if there are often crumbs, pebbles, bits of tree branches, etc. on the floor. Taking car of your car, makes it more comfortable for you & your passengers, and teaches kids to care for the valuable possession.

17A Visit to the Moon IN CASE YOU DIDN'T ALREADY KNOW THIS LITTLE TIDBIT OF WONDERFUL TRIVIA............... ON JULY 20, 1969, AS COMMANDER OF THE APOLLO 11 LUNAR MODULE, NEIL ARMSTRONG WAS THE FIRST PERSON TO SET FOOT ON THE MOON. HIS FIRST WORDS AFTER STEPPING ON THE MOON, "THAT'S ONE SMALL STEP FOR MAN, ONE GIANT LEAP FOR MANKIND," WERE TELEVISED TO EARTH AND HEARD BY MILLIONS. BUT, JUST BEFORE HE RE-ENTERED THE LANDER, HE MADE THE ENIGMATIC REMARK "GOOD LUCK, MR. GORSKY." MANY PEOPLE AT NASA THOUGHT IT WAS A CASUAL REMARK CONCERNING SOME RIVAL SOVIET COSMONAUT. HOWEVER, UPON CHECKING, THERE WAS NO GORSKY IN EITHER THE RUSSIAN OR AMERICAN SPACE PROGRAMS. OVER THE YEARS, MANY PEOPLE QUESTIONED ARMSTRONG AS TO WHAT THE 'GOOD LUCK, MR. GORSKY' STATEMENT MEANT, BUT ARMSTRONG ALWAYS JUST SMILED. ON JULY 5, 1995, IN TAMPA BAY, FLORIDA, WHILE ANSWERING QUESTIONS FOLLOWING A SPEECH, A REPORTER BROUGHT UP THE 26-YEAR-OLD QUESTION ABOUT MR.GORSKY AND   THIS TIME HE FINALLY RESPONDED BECAUSE HIS MR. GORSKY HAD JUST DIED, SO NEIL ARMSTRONG FELT HE COULD NOW ANSWER THE QUESTION. HERE IS THE ANSWER TO "WHO WAS MR. GORSKY?":

IN 1938, WHEN HE WAS A KID IN A SMALL MID-WESTERN TOWN, HE WAS PLAYING BASEBALL WITH A FRIEND IN THE BACKYARD. HIS FRIEND HIT THE BALL, WHICH LANDED IN HIS NEIGHBOUR'S YARD BY THEIR BEDROOM WINDOW. HIS NEIGHBOURS WERE MR. AND MRS. GORSKY. AS HE LEANED DOWN TO PICK UP THE BALL, YOUNG ARMSTRONG HEARD MRS. GORSKY SHOUTING AT MR. GORSKY, "SEX! YOU WANT SEX?! YOU'LL GET SEX WHEN THE KID NEXT DOOR WALKS ON THE MOON!" It broke the place up.   NEIL ARMSTRONG'S FAMILY CONFIRMED THAT THIS IS A TRUE STORY. Do pass it on, it's too choice not to be shared.

18Merry Christmas and a HappyNew Ford V8 Year 2020Regards, Ola HegsethInt’l rep. Europe of the Early Ford V8 Club of America

1993 together 2020

I bought this Fordor Sedan back in 1977 and I found an ad in a daily newspaper: “1938 Ford V8 Coupe for Sales” I called up the advertiser who tell me that the Ford was bought new by his father and it has only going 77.000 KM (around 47.800 Miles) a matching number car, also the engine, transmision and rear axel were all as HF has built it for these Ford. Wanted price NOK 15.000. The Ford was staying 520 km north of mine home in a town called Trondheim, but their son should home for visit a week later. It was the Whitsuntide. Since I too have family up there I say yes for going together up and down, for looking at the Ford. The tour goes well and we talking about cars and suddenly he said it has been a small damage in the right rear door. What You say? Is it a fordor sedan? The old people says that coupe is a closed car instead of the open cars, which was the cabriolet. After reached Trondheim I visit the garage of the family, where I saw the Ford V8 first time. It has been staying in the garage for the last 11 years. The body outside were full of garage dirt, but I saw no rust, but inside it was very clean and nice. It was no battery in the car, so I only take a look at the motor oil which were black and fine. The car were lifted up from the floor so the wheels could be turning free and the brakes were tested. Afterwards I go inside for visiting the old owner of the car, and her son has told her about they have narrowed me with wrong type of model of Ford. So she felt a little sorry with this mistake and will drop the price if I take the car with one third of the Price, also NOK 10.000. I accept the price and I told theme that I’ll pick up the car inside a month. When I was home again a friend of mine told me that he was transporting Caravans from Oslo to Trondheim and he was very happy with a little extra weight in the homeway in his transport truck. Back in Oslo nearby where we both lived, it was a Shell fuel station ,where we take down the Ford and put on some fuel and a battery, towing some 50 meter in second gear and it was very start willing and leave a black clouds behind before we stop the engine. Afterwards we change motoroil and oil in rear axel and transmission and then the Ford was firing again.
