NROTC Mission

• Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps (NROTC)

– Develop midshipmen mentally, morally and physically.

DODMERB Qualified

• Scholarship benefits will not start/activate until

“successfully” completed by 45th day of classes.

– If not completed by 6 OCT 2017, student must pay the

Fall 2017 tuition/fees immediately to school.

– If “successfully” completed after 6 OCT 17, the

government, with approval from higher authority, may

back-pay the school.

• Must pay school - personal reimbursement is not authorized.

45-Day Good StandingStudent Contract: NSTC 1533/135

• Contract Requirement for EACH semester

• Demonstrate active participation in the NROTC program at the beginning of each academic term.– Student is considered an active participant if, for the first 45

days of each academic term they are:

• Not on Leave of Absence (LOA), and

• Enrolled and participating in all aspects of the NROTC Program

– Includes school courses, Naval Science courses and drill.

• Failure to comply with this 45-day requirement– Student is ineligible to receive any scholarship benefits for

that academic term.

– Student will be liable for any costs assessed by the school.

Retaking ClassesStudent Contract: NSTC 1533/135

• The Navy will NOT pay for:

– Any fee incurred due to withdrawing from a course.

• TSU charges a fee beginning on the 1st day of classes.

– Retaking a course due to initially failing the course.

– Withdrawing from a course after a time when tuition

credit or reimbursement could have been received.

– Retaking a course in an effort to receive a better grade.

TSU Drop Penalty

TSU Billing Schedule (ALL Terms/Fall-Spring)

• Any Class “Dropped” on/after the 1st day of class– 25% drop fee (25% of tuition cost, per semester hour, per class!)

• Dropped after two weeks of class– 75% drop fee

• Dropped after three weeks of class– 100% drop fee

– Since three weeks is < 45 days, the student bears the 100% drop fee

• When do scholarship students ‘QUALIFY’ for their semester scholarship benefits?– On the 46th Day of class after PNS certifies them in good standing.

Health Insurance

• The Navy will not pay for medical or dental insurance– Student Contract: NSTC 1533/135

– Government pays for “commissioning requirement” medical appointments only.

• Student coverage on parent’s Affordable Care Act health insurance policy is sufficient.

• Vanderbilt automatically charges annual/school year health insurance. – 2017/2018 Cost = $1,949

– Parents and student should discuss this personal cost.

– Student must submit an annual waiver to VU before Aug 1st each year or student will be charged.

Vanderbilt “ROTC” Stipend

• Only Vanderbilt University students qualify

• Up to $3,000 per semester– Discounts ROTC Stipend if student receives other

Vanderbilt funded scholarships

• Managed, controlled & disbursed by Vanderbilt Student Financial Aid Office

• VU College Program & Advanced Standing Midshipmen are also submitted “for consideration”

• Navy must pay semester scholarship after 45 day-good standing period
