A DAy At the RAces
8.
It’s possible to get some excellent photos all in the space of a day out at sea, as Vincent Kos discovers
9.
Enjoy your day and depart from IJburg to spend the
day at the IJmeer. Here, there are many opportunities to
go sailing, enjoy the scenery and the tranquility of the water, moor up in one of the
many ports and enjoy a snack and a drink. Alternatively, for the
competitve folk, racing is possible between two identical yachts or any
of the three short track races just off the coast of IJburg as Vincent has done.

Bird Watching magazine’s Matthew Merritt explains why Autumn is the best time for birdwatching
13.
Dungeness – this is one of the iconic locations of
British birding, situated on a shingle spit sticking out into
the English Channel. ‘Migrants are funnelled into the spit as they head south, while behind the shingle banks there are pools, scrapes, saltmarsh and
mudflats, perfect habitat for wildfowl and waders.
There’s a large RSPB reserve, and a bird observatory. DUnGEnESS

With this technique we can obtain really close-up images of subjects, whether birds, mammals, flowers or even insects, bearing in mind some-thing very important, that we can remain at a safe distance and hence cause minimal distur-bance to animals in their natural environment.

DIGISCOPInGText, Photos & Illustrations by Eva Solanes
Digiscoping is the photographic technique of uniting a digital camera, either reflex or compact, to a spotting telescope. The combination of camera and telescope creates a powerful photographic tool, capable of bringing the photographer much closer to any subject, such as birds or mammals. The focal lengths on offer are in excess of 1,000mm, which is far superior to traditional
telephoto lenses. A large number of birdwatchers use the digiscoping technique, because on top of a good telescope, there is little more investment needed. With scopes ranging between £200-£2,000 and adaptors from £200-450, equipment can be much more affordable than an equivalent telephoto lens. A digiscoping setup is lighter too. Handily, being able to get close-up
images from such great distances causes minimal disturbance to animals in their natural environment. However, digiscoping is a difficult technique, requiring the upmost stability for the kit. There are limitations too - a telescope does not have an adjustable aperture. One’s technique is truly tested, but with patience and endeavour it is possible to get great pictures.
16.
Get in close to your subjects, using this affordable technique
Boreal Owl (Aegolius Funereus), Finland Focal length: 1600 mm (50 x 1.6 x 20x)
There are 3 ways of coupling the camera to the spotting scope: the afocal system, the prime focus and that of eyepiece projection. The first two are the most commonly used systems. The versatility of these three methods makes it possible to work with a great variety of equipment. Here’s a definition of each one:
To summarise, with the afocal and the eyepiece projection systems we can obtain greater magnification but there will be some loss of quality from the photos, as there are lenses between the camera and the telescope. In contrast, with the prime focus system we can obtain greater quality but lower magnification, as the connection is directly between the camera body and the telescope.
AFOCAL Connecting the camera lens directly to the telescope eyepiece using an adapter. This system is used for both reflex and compact cameras.
PRIME FOCUS Connecting the camera to the telescope directly, without incorporating any intermediary lens, in other words without the camera lens and without the telescope eyepiece. This requires a Photo Adapter. This system is only used with reflex cameras.
EYEPIECE PROJECTION Connecting the camera without any lens to the telescope eyepiece using an adapter. This system is only used with reflex cameras.

Coupling
An APS-C format DSLR camera with 50 mm lens attached and a 40x zoom eyepiece telescope has been used to create this image of White Storks (Ciconia ciconia) in Lleida, Spain.
Technical details Focal length: 3200 mm (64x)Magnification calculation: 50 x 1.6 x 40xShutter speed: 1/400sec
18.
Examples of photos taken the afocal system using an APS camera (with a sensor multiplications factor of 1.6), and a telescope zoom eyepiece of 20-60x. In both cases only the 20 and 30x zooms have been used, thereby achieving a focal length of 1,800mm. By using the 60x it is possible to attain 9,000mm, but with subsquent loss of quality (original framing)
Sensors sizes used in most of today’s digital cameras, compared to a standard 35mm photogram.

Sensor Sizes & MagnificationAnother aspect to take into consideration is the camera’s sensor size. particularly when using the afocal or prime focus coupling methods. A full frame sensor does not have a magnification factor, but less costly cameras that use a smaller sensor actually benefit digiscopers with a magnification factor that increases the focal length. For example, an APS-C format sensor has a 1.5x magnification factor (for Pentax, Sony and nikon models but for Canon it is 1.6x), while the Four Thirds sensor used in Olympus and Panasonic CSCs has a 2x magnification factor.

Eyepiece zoom at 30x Eyepiece zoom at 20x
A look at the afocal and prime focus setups reveals that when a camera with a sensor magnification factor of 1.6x is connected to a telescope ocular zoom of 20-60x, a range of focal lengths of between 1,800 and 9,000 mm is obtained. This arms us with an overwhelming potential in comparison to traditional telephoto lenses, which can only reach up to 1,200 mm. One thing that should be pointed out is that with digiscoping, increasing magnification applied through the telescope eyepiece leads to a reduction in image quality, and depending on the setup (eg. compact camera) increases vignetting which reduces the useable section of the image frame. Hence it is recommendable not to exceed 40 magnifications and to only use the higher levels for emergencies, such as documenting rare sightings or readings of rings on birds. In digiscoping birdwatchers have a great ally in the reliable dating and management of their records.

ChallengesWhen working with a large focal length, any small vibration greatly affects the whole equipment, often spoiling the resulting images. Also, the slightest movements of kit are exaggerated, so a shift of a millimetre can alter the view through the scope by feet, which makes compostion tricky. To ensure kit is as steady as possible, it is vital to fix the camera and scope to a sturdy tripod. The right tripod head is important too. A fluid video head provides smooth and fluid movements, which helps locate and track a subject, as well as obtaining optimum stability for well-defined shots without vibrations.
Once the equipment has been decided, it is wise to check the weather. Good light is needed for two key reasons. There is no control over aperture when using a telescope, which depending on the telescope is fixed in the region of f/11. Also, a fast shutter speed is needed (I suggest a speed that matches the focal length eg. 1/1000sec for 1,000mm). This combination requires bright light (or a high ISO which would reduce image quality).
With all these factors in mind we are ready to shoot. Patience is required to adapt to the new equipment, as its handling is different from those of a traditional telephoto lens. But with practice and enthusiasm you can soon get images which you will be proud of.

ED GlassED glass effectively reduces color dispersion and enhances color resolution and contrast. Different light wavelengths do not come to the same point after passing the lens. ED glass helps to correct this problem. As a result, the image is sharper.

P2 Phase coating
V-Max CoatingV-Max Silver Coating is among the most cutting-edge lens treatments in optics, providing crisper, more vivid images and sharper contrast due to impressive light reflection.
AR Coating (Anti-Reflection)AR Coating on all air-to-surface lenses dramatically minimises light reflection on the lens. Coupled with fully multi-coated treatment, it ensures near perfect light transmission and image recognition, enabling the brightest images possible, even on the sunniest days.
P2 Phase CoatingDeveloped for enhanced image clarity and true color reproduction, P2 Phase Coating treatment to BaK4 prisms creates crystal clear images and high resolution observation.
Emerald CoatingThe VAnGUARD Emerald coating is specifically designed to provide the full spectrum of color within the band of green tones. This coating is essential for nature enthusiasts, because it ensures the most vivid and natural shades of green.
Waterproofnitrogen charged and O-ring sealed, waterproof and fogproof to take on challenging weather conditions.
