VANIER COLLEGE CLOSED March 14th to 29th: As a precautionary measure to ensure the health and safety of pupils, students, and all staff in the education and higher education networks

as well as the general population, the government has decided to close all educational institutions in Quebec for the next two weeks.

Thus Vanier College will be closed from March 14 to 29, 2020. All weekend events and activities are also canceled. The decision to reopen the

College will be determined according to the evolution of the COVID 19 crisis which is being followed closely.

There may be adjustments to the School Calendar and the government has committed to put in place the measures and means to ensure all

necessary support will be provided to address this and other issues.

Staff and faculty must be available to the College to perform some actions either remotely depending on the service required and their capacity

to do so, or at the college in order to maintain some services. Your supervisor will clarify expectations in this regard. Access to the College

will be possible but limited, as it is during other periods of closure and will require individuals to sign in at the main entrance.

Please be assured that we will do our best to keep you regularly informed over the next two weeks. We will be sending information by email,

on the website and via Omnivox.

We had planned to send detailed information this afternoon concerning various aspects of our operations; however, given the latest directive

from the Ministry we will further clarify that information and communicate to you over the next two weeks.

The Ministry sent a directive yesterday that included the following important points.

1. ALL work-related trips outside Canada for College employees are no longer authorized.

2. ALL student trips outside Canada for various purposes are prohibited.

3. All College Employees returning from ANY COUNTRY outside Canada MUST quarantine themselves for a 14-day period upon return.

4. Students returning from ANY COUNTRY outside Canada SHOULD self-quarantine themselves for a 14-day period upon return.

5. All indoor gatherings in a single space will be limited to a MAXIMUM of 250 persons.

6. All staff and students are reminded that they should inform the College management if they have been in contact with a person who

visited any country at risk (Level 3……..currently China, Iran and Italy):

7. If a case is confirmed in an educational institution, it will immediately close for a minimum of 14 days or until all of the students and

staff members are tested. (Today the ministry decided to close all institutions as a precautionary measure for 14 days)

TRAVEL: Points #3 and #4 are particularly important given that some individuals may be planning to travel outside Canada during the March

Break and need to be aware of the potential implications.**

**It is STRONGLY RECOMMENDED to avoid ALL non-essential travel outside Canada as leaving the country at this time could put your health

at risk. Furthermore, the consequences for both staff and students who knowingly leave the country, effective March 12 th, are currently

unclear.

There may be several questions related to these DIRECTIVES, all of which we will attempt to address in communiques over the next two weeks

as the situation evolves. Also, please forward any questions to your supervisor or Dean.

John McMahon, Director General

Cheetahs headed to the Nationals as

Vanier College Men’s Division 1 Basketball Cheetahs win Provincial Gold 2020

In a nail-biter game on Sunday, March 8, 2020, the first place

Vanier Cheetahs faced second-place Cégep Jean-de-Brébeuf, as

the Cheetahs tried for a second consecutive Provincial title. And

glory was Vanier’s, as the Cheetahs came out with a tremendously

hard-fought 79-74 Provincial Gold Medal victory over Brébeuf!

They will next play in the CCAA National Championships which will

be held from March 19-21 at Humber College in Etobicoke,

Ontario.

Congratulations to all the Vanier players and to the coaching staff

including Assistant Head Coach Feras Saaida, Assistant Coach

Kazadi Nyanguila, and Head Coach Andy Hertzog. Congratulations as well to Pier-Olivier Racine who was named MVP of the tournament, and

Christopher Biekeu and Karim Mané who were both also named to the All-Tournament team.

“Our Division 1 men’s basketball team was looking for its 2nd straight Provincial championship. It was a much-anticipated contest, as our

Cheetahs, the first place team in Quebec and ranked 5th nationally, took on the Brébeuf Dynamiques, 2nd in Quebec and 7th in Canada,” said

Head Coach Andy Hertzog.

Information Session for two Art and Photography Scholarships For a third consecutive year Vanier College is offering two scholarships to support our students that have talent in the creative arts. The Vanier

College Foundation Student Art Acquisition Scholarship, valued at $2000 is divided amongst the selected applicants to purchase and display

their artwork on Vanier's campus. The Peter Gonda Memorial Scholarship for Photography, valued at $600 and is divided into first, second

and third prizes. All finalists from both scholarships will be included in an exhibition in the Henry Lehmann Gallery (B-303) at the beginning of

the fall semester 2020.

An information session for both scholarships will be held at a future date to be announced. The application deadline for both scholarships is Wednesday May 13th, 2020. See more detail below on each scholarship.

The Vanier College Foundation Student Art Acquisition Scholarship. The goal of the scholarship is to promote student success and highlight student artwork by purchasing it and displaying it in various areas of

the college. At the same time, this scholarship would offer financial support to students and lead to the creation of an art bank that would help

showcase the talents of our students in disciplines such as photography, sculpture, drawing and painting.

All media are accepted: drawings, paintings, photography, art work, installation art and sculpture.

The Peter Gonda Memorial Scholarship for Photography

The Peter Gonda Memorial Scholarship for Photography, valued at $600, will be awarded annually to any Vanier College student who

demonstrates original photographic works. There will be a first prize of $300, second prize of $200 and a third prize of $100.

Peter Gonda passed away on August 20th 2016 at the age of 47. He was a Montreal-based artist, novelist and screenwriter. One of his main

passions was photography. He travelled around the world and exhibited his photographs in London, Paris and Montreal.
