What is the 490-GC
• The 490-GC is Varian’s 5th generation of the Micro-GC series
• Small, fast and rugged gas analyser
• Based on advanced micro-machining technology
• Instrument control and data handling by Galaxie
• Usage in laboratory, on-line, at-line and for field applications
3
Why the 490-GC
• Immediate answers for gas and vapour samples• Fast analysis, separations in seconds• Analyse anywhere, in the lab, at-line, on-line, in the field• Easy to use, no need for specialised trained personnel• Consuming less bench space• Local or remote control• Complete software and user-programs• Savings on gas cylinder purchases and gas related
items• Savings on installation time

8
How does the 490-GC Micro-GC Work
Complete miniaturised GC system:• 1 up to 4 complete GC channels
Each GC channel is a separate GC:• Silicon micro-machined injector• Oven with analytical column • Micro-machined Thermal Conductivity Detector (µ-TCD)• Pneumatics• Electronics
Each channel is tuned for a specific part of the sample

On Board Data Handling
Built into the 490-PRO:• Peak integration• Peak identification• Peak calibration• Peak grouping
This means that for routine measurements:• Full autonomous operation (no operator required)• No external data handling software required • No PC needed to generate results
20
490-PRO – Fully Automated Operation
Sequential measurement runs that include:• sample type • valve/sample position• flush time• calibration level
Calibration and/or verification analysis• after a desired # of samples • based on a specific time• on demand via remote command• automatic (re)calibration if verification values “fail”
21
490-PRO – Fully Automated Operation
Stream selection and control:• Electrically actuated multi-position valves • Solenoids based stream selectors
Remote Communication:• MODBUS • Digital input
22
Standard Functionality
• Validation of• Verification samples• Sample streams• Calibration samples
• Calculation parameters:• Multi channel normalisation. Optional a bridge component• Add estimated concentrations for non detected peaks• Convert acquired analog input signals to functional values, ex.
sample flow• Definable alarms to:
– activate a relay – store results in MODBUS registers
• Definable 4-20 mA signals
23
