Unkwnon, Abreast with the Times

As the AFP is reporting, Sofia's massive bronzerelief sculpture honoring the Red Army's advanceon Nazi-allied Bulgaria during World War II has longbeen a bone of contention between Russophilesand anti-communists in Bulgaria, who want itdemolished.

But an anonymous artist gave the piece a tongue-in-cheek paint job that re-imagined the figures ofSoviet soldiers as comic book heroes, with theJoker, Wolverine of "X-Men" fame, Superman allstanding guard alongside other fantasy figures likeSanta Claus and Ronald McDonald, among others.In addition, the flag

held by the soldiers has been painted with U.S.stars and stripes.

Many people have an alter-ego or a double lifereflected in their work, what they wear or howthey act in various moments.

Fanatic Wars is based on the alter egos that

Mexicans have been creating since 1977 with therelease of the first Star Wars film "A New Hope".

Disguised as their favourite characters, these"heroes" come from a wide mix of different social

classes including those from families with youngchildren who also take part. Their Star Wars alter-ego transforms them into another person; the herothey feel they aren't in daily life, or at least notthe sort of hero that defends the fate of the

universe.

I feel that we are all reflected in them somehow,in that contact that remains with the inner child.The costumes they have bought (or have spent a

long time making themselves) is like an armourthat takes them away from reality. It is thesemoments where they are immersed in a magicalworld of dreams that everything is possible, untilthe mask comes off again.
