For example, when wet-well pumps are used on the fish processing vessels, the rolling of the ship causes the pump to be intermittently submerged and then placed in a “snoring” mode of operation. This snoring causes vibration that in time will damage mechanical seals. Another example of the recurring seal problems is pumping highly aerated water in an aeration lagoon at a pulp mill. The vibration from pumping this aerated water has caused repeat seal problems. The Vaughan cantilever design eliminates the need for a seal (because there are no bearings below the deck plate). Note that cantilever pumps are limited to lengths no longer than 4 ft. long on 1170 RPM pumps, and no longer than 3 ft. long at 1750 RPM.

FEATURE: No bearings or mechanical seal immersed in the pumped liquid BENEFIT: Some uses of various other pumps make survivability of mechanical seals impossible.
