Pack Item 7 from Grades 1-2 Bible Study Leader Pack if using Grades 1-2 focal wall items and/or Pack Items 8, 12, 16, and 20 from Grades 3-4 Bible Study Leader Pack if using Grades 3-4 curriculum on focal wall

For Step 7 Cut apart the ten sections of each cowboy from “Cowboy Up” (Pack Item 5) in the Grades 3-

4 Bible Study Leader Pack, and prepare to give each team a set of pieces. For Step 9

Provide all items listed in Application Activities Prep on page 10 of both leader guides if you are teaching the combined age groups of Grades 1-4. Items needed for both age groups include: a large mirror; dry erase marker; masking tape; two pairs of cowboy boots and vests; CD player; Enhanced CD from Grades 1-2 Bible Study Leader Pack (Pack Item 23); Grades 3-4 Bible Study Leader Pack (Pack Item 24); ink pad; textured, heavyweight brown paper or cardboard cut into three-by-three-inch squares; and markers.

Prepare Pack Item 6 from Grades 1-2 Bible Study Leader Pack and follow instructions on page 11 of the Grades 1-2 Bible Study Leader Guide to create horseshoes. Provide masking tape to create a starting line.

Gather Pack Item 9 from Grades 3-4 Bible Study Leader Pack.

Resources to Copy For Focal Wall

“Corral Fence” from Page 7 that can be used as a master to create an overhead cel that can be enlarged and traced on brown paper with an overhead projector. Or use the illustration as a suggestion to create your own fence on large brown paper. Tape the fence pieces together on a wall to create a large corral.

“Horse Questions” from Pages 8-13 and displayed in various places around the room. For Step 5

Days 1-4 Teacher Devotions printed from the Bible Study Enhanced CD (Or provide a way to allow groups to listen to the audio tracks of the Teacher Devotions.)

For Step 7 “Cowboy Up Questions” from Page 15 (Provide two sets of the question card sets.)

For Step 9 “Saddle Bag Assignments” from Page 17 (Cut the assignments apart and provide one

assignment to each corral group.) Focal Wall Description Decorate the conference room using suggestions from the age-graded leader guides, page 36. Display “Saddle Ridge Ranch Title Banner” (Pack Item 2) for the age-graded Bible Study conference you are leading on one side of the focal wall. For grades 1-2, display the mantle title banner above a fake fireplace. Cut out the “Title Banner Add-ons” (Pack Item 3) and add them to the matching item on the mantle. Display the “VBS Scripture Sampler” (Pack Item 4) near the fireplace mantle. Display one or more of the “Bible Verse Posters” (Pack Item 7) near the title banner fireplace. Cut out the candles and pinecones from item 7, and display them on the fireplace mantle. For grades 3-4, display the title banner with the Bible verse posters for Days 1-4 (Pack Items 8, 12, 16, and 20) placed on the decorative etching of the bunk beds’ footboards. Make a wall grouping of the five samplers from “Session Title Samplers” (Pack Item 3) near the banner. Place “The Wisdom

Wall Hanging” (Pack Item 4) on the other side of the banner to provide the VBS theme verse, which is also the Bible verse for Day 5. If you are leading the Bible Study Bunkhouse conference for grades 1-4, gather all the items listed. Place these two displays near each other on the focal wall. On the wall opposite of the focal wall, create a large corral using “Coral Fence” using the diagram page 7. This corral will serve as a place for the “Horse Questions” from pages 8-14 to be added as they are gathered, answered, and discussed during the training session. Room Setup Description Display VBS age-graded Bible study resources on a table near the focal wall. Place chairs in the room in four “corral” groups arranged so all group members can see the focal wall area. Leave enough room between the focal wall and the chairs for the activities. The amount of chairs will vary based on the total number of conferees anticipated. Decoration Suggestions Make a fireplace or use the one created from the title banner of Grades 1-2. Set fireplace utensils, candlesticks, pinecones, and cast iron cookware near the fireplace. Place colorful saddle blankets on the floor. Place cowboy boots near the door. Hang cowboy hats, leather vests, bandannas, and ropes around the room to create a bunkhouse appearance. Audio Visual Needs CD players (Providing two CD players can be helpful to listen to teacher devotions and listen to audio tracks used in optional activities.) Teaching Steps Step 1 (8 minutes)

• Greet conferees as they arrive. Encourage them to begin visiting the five stations you have placed in different areas of the room. Explain that they are experiencing what life might be like on Saddle Ridge Ranch by exploring the “Cowboy Sensory Stations.” Mention that this activity is used in the Grades 3-4 Get Started activity on Day 1 of VBS.

Step 2 (7 minutes)

• After conferees have visited each station, invite them to join you in the “pasture” area near the four rope circles (corrals) placed on the floor. Explain that conferees should gallop around the pasture until they hear a horse whinny. When they hear the horse, they should go to the nearest corral (rope circle). Begin playing “Corral Sounds” (track 1 from Grades 1-2 Bible Study Enhanced CD). Pause the CD when you hear the horse whinny. When the conferees have gathered in corrals, give these instructions: “Share your name and your favorite pizza topping with others in your corral.” Allow a few moments for conferees to complete the task then continue playing “Corral Sounds.” When the horse whinny sound is heard again, pause the CD. This time, ask conferees to share their name and their favorite hobby. Other tasks to continue this activity include: give the number and names of pets you own; tell about a favorite vacation; do an animal imitation. Mention that this get-acquainted activity is used in the Grades 1-2 Get Started activity on Day 1 of VBS.

Step 3 (2 minutes) • Introduce yourself and explain that Saddle Ridge Ranch is all about “Roundin’ up questions

and drivin’ home answers.” • Explain that this training time is going to help leaders “round up” questions and “discover”

answers on how they can help boys and girls learn answers to important questions this summer.

Step 4 (3 minutes)

• Ask conferees to look around the room for pictures of horses that have questions printed on them. Ask for a volunteer to find the horse with question 1, “Where did this theme come from?” and place it in the corral.

• Point out that the answer to this question can be found on page 4 of the leader guides. • Summarize the information on how the theme and content was developed for 2010.

Step 5 (10 minutes)

• Ask another volunteer to find the horse with question 2 “Where do I start?” and place it in the corral.

• Lead the four corral groups to read “Preparing for the Ride” found on page 4 of the Leader Guide.

• Assign each group one of the teacher devotions (Days 1-4) to read or listen to (found on the Enhanced CD (Pack Item 23 from Grades 1-2 Bible Study Leader Pack or Pack Item 24 from Grades 3-4 Bible Study Leader Pack).

• After groups have read (or listened) to the teacher devotion ask each group to summarize and report to the other corral groups what they learned about the Bible content for the day they were assigned.

• Complete the discussion by pointing out that Day 5 is called “What Do I Do Now?” Share that the Bible verse is the same as the unit verse for the week. Explain that kids will learn that an answer for this day’s question is that they should remember and do the things they learned about earlier in the week. The Bible study is from Philippians 4:4-9. This passage will help kids see that they should do things that are right, just, true, and pure to honor God.

Step 6 (10 minutes)

Enlist a conferee to “corral” the horse with question 3 “What is different?” Begin explaining that the most obvious difference for the VBS 2010 Bible Study Bunkhouse

is the new format explained on page 5 of the leader guides. The new format is designed to make it easier for churches to fit VBS to a variety of schedules. Describe how there is a 30-minute core Bible study time which covers the basics for churches who have shorter schedules.

Note that a total of 40 minutes in additional optional activities is also included for each session. Two 10-minute application activities will help kids apply the Bible truth. One 10-minute review activity helps review the day’s session and another 10-minute activity helps kids learn Bible skills.

Look at the “Customize the Ride!” on page 5 of the leader guides to see possible ways to combine the core Bible study time with additional activities for different VBS schedules.

Explain that another new feature is the teacher’s “Personal Bible Studies” have been removed from the leader guide and placed on the Enhanced CD found in the Leader Pack. (Groups may have discovered this as they worked in their corral groups earlier.) Teachers may read the teacher devotions or listen to the audio tracks to get the additional information related to the Bible passages.

VBS 2010 Grades 1-4 Bible Study Conference Plan File No. 3

Step 7 (10 minutes) Ask a conferee to locate the horse with question 4 “Where do I find it?” Place it in the corral. Form two teams to play a modification of the game “Cowboy Up” (Pack Item 5 from the

Grades 3-4 Bible Study Leader Pack) to determine where they will find certain items in the curriculum to lead the Bible Study Bunkhouse effectively. Explain that each team will choose a leader to ask the questions, verify the answers, and award sections of the cowboy for each correct response. Teams will compete to see which team can answer all 10 questions correctly and get their cowboy assembled first. Provide each team with a set of the “Cowboy Up Questions” (page 15) and the curriculum resources to find the answers.

Step 8 (25 minutes)

Request that someone “corral” the horse with question 5, “What does a day feel like?” Lead the group through a day at the ranch for a 30-minute core Bible study. Look at the Lesson Plan of Day 1 on page 6 of the Grades 1-2 and/or Grades 3-4 Bible Study Leader Guide to help leaders see an outline of the 30-minute core Bible study.

Remind leaders that they participated in the Get Started activities from Grades 1-2 and Grades 3-4 earlier in the session. Remind leaders that Get Started activities are designed to get kids engaged as soon as they arrive in the Bible Study Bunkhouse.

Share that the next part of the Bible Study is Learn It. Lead the group through the Learn It procedures for one of the age groups.

Use the Live It procedures from one of the age groups to explain how kids will be encouraged to apply things they learned during Learn It.

Follow the procedures in Pray. Thank God for creating us in the way He has. Point out that the leader guide indicates where to include options to extend the 30 minute core

before participating in departure activities. Step 9 (30 minutes)

Distribute the “Saddle Bag Assignments” from page 17. Give one assignment to each of the 4 corral groups. Ask the groups to spend a few minutes reading through the activity. Ask groups to choose a leader for the discussion part of the activity. Then ask groups to give a 5-minute report on the 10-minute activity they were assigned.

Step 10 (10 minutes)

Ask a volunteer to “corral” the horse with question 6, “What are your questions?” Allow time for conferees to ask questions about the resources. If there are not many

questions, use the time to prompt a few questions such as: “What are some characteristics of first and second graders or third and fourth graders?” (Answer: Use some of the characteristics listed on page 39 of the appropriate leader guide). “What day will the ABCs of Becoming a Christian be introduced?” (Answer: Day 3) “What are some additional tools I can use to help boys and girls learn more about becoming a Christian?” (Answer: VBS 2010 New Testament with Psalms and Proverbs [available in HCSB® or KJV], ABC Memory Cross™, or the ABC Invitation from the Kid’s Activity Pak.

Step 11 (5 minutes)

Remind leaders that we’ve been talking about roundin’ up questions, and drivin’ home answers. Note that the question asked in Day 5 is “What Do I Do Now?” Tell leaders that it would be good to ask this question of ourselves as we complete this time of training and preparation. Ask someone to “corral” the horse with question 7 “What do I do now?”

Read the VBS Scripture (James 1:5). Ask leaders to find a partner and share their answers to these questions: “When have you felt a need to ask God for help?” and “How did He help you?”

Lead in a prayer thanking God that He allows us to seek His wisdom, and that He gives answers generously. Pray for children God will bring to VBS this summer. Ask God to help leaders impart His wisdom to children seeking answers.

Close by repeating the Day 5 title question and Bible story title of Question: “What Do I Do Now?” Answer: “Go to It! Do It!”
