The month of August 2017 was event filled as I had the opportunity to attend Apex

Global AGM along with the National Convention of Apex Malaysia in Klang, Malaysia.

The Apex Global Chairman Aslam Hossain has praised the activities of Apex India and

also Awarded the “ Best Progressive National Association “ to Apex India.

As this year being the turn of Apex India to take over as Apex Global Vice Chairman ,

based on the recommendation of Apex India , I was installed as the Apex Global Vice

chairman for the year 2017 – 2018. I thank all the Apexians from Apex India for having

faith in me and nominating for the Post.

Apex Global Chairman Apxn Edward Mai has set up a Foundation in the name of Mai

Apex Global Foundation for Education, Youth Development and Community Service.

As the Global Vice Chairman, I request all the clubs to explore the possibilities of

utilizing this Global Foundation Fund by presenting suitable service projects

concerning education and youth development.

The District convention of District 1 was hosted by the Apex Club of Bishnupur; it was

an eye opener for me as it was my first visit to the District. The Highlight of

Convention was attendance by Father of Apex India Apxn Samir Ghosh; it was

encouraging for all the apexians of District 1 to see Father of Apex India active in

Apexing , even at his ripe old age. This Opportunity was utilized by Apex Club of Bally

to celebrate the Golden Jubilee of their Club in their newly constructed premises in

Bally. Their permenant project (Hospital) is a real success story for others to try and

follow. Each club should plan to have a permenant service project for their prolonged

service activities, which in turn will ensure the sustenance of the club itself.

During the following weeks I attended the District Conventions of District 7 and

District 5 hosted by Apex Club of Cuddalore and Apex Club of Suratgarh respectively.

These were well attend conventions with active participation from the clubs in the

Districts. I request all the District Governors and DG Elects to ensure the clubs who

have not paid their pro-rate to pay at the earliest. Also the Health Checkup forms to

be sent to the National Board, without further delay.

While there is widespread talk of women empowerment on various platforms, I think

the time has come for all clubs to form Apex Ladies club associated with their clubs

by involving the women from their families itself. This will give them an opportunity

to discover their individuality and hidden strengths. The clubs in Apex India can be

strengthened only by increasing the number of members.

Greetings from Singapore. During my flight, Saturday last, I had an opportunity to

interact with the Captain of the flight. During the tete-e-tete, he jokingly said, “ We the

pilots look at the Manuals even during when the plane is crashing..” he continued “as

it is a high performance domain and dealing with a deluge of flight data, pilots have a

mantra that assails them the during a crisis”.

Aviate Navigate Communicate

That is, first focus on flying a plane; second fly the plane in the right direction and third,

tell people where you are flying the plane. Its a simple practical process that save the

lives of passengers. He also mentioned every profession has unique mantras. He

added, “for example the paramedics and Ambulance services have

Assess Adjust Act

as their mantras” . He went on, “ even Adolf Hitler’s “ein volk, ein Reich, ein Furhrer”

for instance “life, liberty, and pursuit of happiess” fall in this category. By harnessing

this three point mantra – they take from chaos through clarity and into action –

Automatically”.

I just extrapolated this to our Apex. As Darwin observed, “it is not the strongest

species that survive, nor the most intelligent, but the ones most responsive to change”

We have to adopt ODA mantra:

Observe Decide Act

akin to Alexander VS , a Russian General of 1719 who wrote the military manual – ‘The

Science of Victory’

I believe that Mantras are the best way in which we can tell our story to ourselves; they

are the real tools for effective thinking, a mental road map in times of pressure.

This equally applies to the project which we are in discussion - the collection of used

and spare materials and reaching to the poor and needy. I have, from this issue

onwards begun to highlight all active clubs in Apex India with their details . Kindly share

details of your club, if you want to be highlighted.

Until next time,

R Mani

An example of leading

from the front by Past

National Leaders

14

By… R Mani Becoming a great leader in Apex is not something that happens

overnight, but it can certainly be achieved through discipline, hard work and a commitment to improvement through

experience. Great leaders in Apex are not born, instead they are shaped over the years. And, if you want to be one of a “great” leaders, there are some general rules that you must follow:

1.Listen to your Team : Always listen to what your team has to say; even if you do not like it.

2. Communicate as effectively as possible: Make your

expectations and feelings clear; in the appropriate medium as often as possible.

3. Talk Less: Sometimes saying nothing is better that saying just anything.

4. Be an example. Be the type of person you want your team members to be.

5. Be passionate. If you aren’t passionate about Apex, you’re in the wrong place to be a leader.

6. Be consistent. Be consistent in your behaviour so your team

knows what to expect from you. 7. Make firm decisions. Don’t leave things undecided for long,

and don’t waver about a decision once you’ve made it.

8. Identify mentors and role models. Find people you can look up to and learn from, and follow them closely.

9. Interfere only when necessary. If you trust your team to do good work, don’t interfere unless absolutely necessary.

10. Know your limits. Don’t extend yourself beyond your means.

11. Know your strengths. If you’re good at resolving disputes, step in and resolve them as often as possible.

12. Know your weaknesses. If there’s something you’re not good at, admit it, and work on it…

…..to be continued….
